I definitely think Captain Syrup deserved a bigger role in the franchise, and I agree that she deserves to be remembered. I think she was ahead of her time, and I bet she could headline her own game today. I love the idea of an ongoing, not entirely platonic rivalry with Wario.
They just never saw Syrup as being Wario's Bowser rather than just a nuisance in his way. She wasn't in the VB game and the ones after II ignored her until Shake It! happened.
A common trope in Japan at the time was the "terrible trios" consisting of a woman, a skinny guy, and a muscular or fat shorter henchman. The whole Warupechi idea was scrapped because Miyamoto did not want to "create another Doronjo clone." Doronjo is the main villainess in the Time Bokan spinoff series "Yatterman" which ran from 1977-79. Perhaps this trio trope is the reason Syrup has not made an appearance in recent years.
Captain Syrup will get the pauline treatment sooner or later, she'll get her big chance in a new 3d mario or wario game and then start becoming a regular in the spin offs. Nintendo knows their female characters are really popular

She is supposed to be his bowser (of sorts), like k rool is to donkey kong (even though they're all in the same universe). I don't really how she was represented in shake it. Not because she was a temporary ally, but because 1: she didn't do as much in that game as much as when she was an antagonist, and 2: people who haven't played the originals mistake her as an ally. In my opinion, syrup (especially in wario land 2) works best as wario's antagonist. To write her off as just some clone of peach is really unfair to her character, and honestly, kinda insulting.

I feel like another good thing could come out of Captain Syrup instead of Waluigi. Wario's the opposite of Mario right? So then take it even further and make their partnership the OPPOSITE of Mario and Luigi's! Rather than liking each other and teaming up, they bicker and often try to sabotage each other.
the problem with waluigi imo is that he's such an underdevelopped character. he could have such potential in a wario game instead of being a tennis partner who only yells "WAH".
It seems that nintendo is given a spot to obscure characters to shine recently, Toad having his own game, Toadette becoming a playable character in an main series game, Daisy being in smash and of course Pauline who have had her triumphant comeback and has become a icon like Rosalina, so i really hope that they make a new Wario land game and with it capitain Syrup would have her chance to shine and possibly become the new icon similar to how Pauline is and Rosalina was
Daisy, Syrup and Tatanga deserved pretty much the same, they both appeared in 2 game before Mario Tennis (3 if we count SMB Print World for Daisy... if this is a real game). At the end Daisy got in, well that's great, but Tatanga and Syrup didn't... why? I mean why they should choose a character like Waluigi to join? A character without background or sense (or a good personality), now, since Daisy was drawn as Luigi's partner and Peach friend it's not her fault if they are not in, but Syrup was a great idea for Wario's partner and why not, Luigi's rival (Waluigi rivality was introduced in this game after all). At this point why just don't take Waluigi and the possible WaPeach and replace them with Tatanga and Syrup? Oh well, Nintendo logic.
Marcoxfenty I can probably understand on Tatanga: since he was revealed to be Wario’s lackey, he was downgraded to a Zone Boss rather than the end boss. Also the way I see Waluigi is that he’s like the Dick Dastardly of the game series.
Rodrigo Morales you ever heard of frenemies? Besides, their partnership would make more sense than Guybrush and Elaine. Like, Monkey Island is trying to force you to buy into Guybrush’s relationship with Elaine, even though he abused her earlier on in the game series, which I don’t see why he didn’t divorce her by the end of the series to marry Morgan instead (and that was before the TellTale Era of actually making your own decisions). Wario and Syrup, on the other hand, would’ve been a parody of the Monkey Island partnership cliche, minus the marriage. Wario and Syrup will be at each other’s throats, but at the same time, would have to learn to work together to share their riches and avoid being killed. Think Indiana Jones meets Pirates of the Caribbean.

The only time they've worked together was in shake it, and she was using wario to steal treasure for her so she could steal it from him. She's a smart manipulator. If she worked with others, it would eventually be to her benefit. But only if she finds that she doesn't have to do the dirty work herself.
I'd like Waluigi more if 1. he didn't originate in a spinoff game and 2. wasn't just in spinoff games. He's a useless character that had way too much potential, but now we're stuck with this placeholder of a character.
I was directed to this video by a Miiverse discussion about Waluigi joining Smash (as a playable character), where it was brought up by someone who really didn't like him. It's a pretty interesting video, and thanks for going in-depth about Syrup's past, as I skipped pretty much every Wario Land after the first game. However, there's one point regarding Waluigi's inclusion that has been apparently overlooked in this video, which I noticed immediately when you've shown the other obscure characters that were brought back for Mario Tennis - They all share some traits with their supposed characters: - Daisy is obviously a princess like Peach, both having a similiar taste in fashion (to the point that she's basically a pallette swap). - Birdo is a bipedal dinosaur-dragon-lizard-like-whatever that weaponizes eggs, just like Yoshi - And DK Jr. is, well, Donkey Kong's younger self... or his son, it's kinda weird. Anyway, he's obviously a monkey, just like regular DK (AFAIK Nintendo/Camelot went with DK Jr. instead of Diddy Kong because there was apparently back then uncertainity whether or not they could use Diddy Kong, who was created by Rareware) With these things in mind, I guess Camelot hadn't Syrup on the radar as she doesn't really share any visual traits with Wario (aside from coloration). Furthermore, I also think that's why the initial concept of a "Wapeach" was scrapped in favor of creating Waluigi, as the Wario/Waluigi duo dynamic would mirror the Mario Bros., which are as a team more prominent than Mario and Peach are (in fact, games where Mario and Peach actually team up over the course of the story are still rare to my knowledge). In conclusion, while I think that is indeed unfortunate that Syrup didn't got much love from Nintendo since the early Wario Land games, I wouldn't really blame this on Waluigi.
Thank you for this video, I definitely agree Captain Syrup should've been in the sports spin-offs from the beginning and they didn't need to create Waluigi. I don't even hate him but his fans are annoying and them wanting him to be an actual playable character in smash is laughable.
If Captain Syrup appears in a future game or spinoff she would be portrayed of an anti-Peach. Unlike Peach, Maple Syrup would flirt with men and rob them blind or she manipulates others.

After I learned about her character, I immediately want to see more of her as a reoccurring character in the Mario franchise. I just love her design and personality as a risky boots like character and a female Wario counterpart and rival. And is very refreshing to other female Nintendo characters. Just makes me disappointed that we got so little of her. I really hope to see her again in the future, she deserves so much better than being put and overshowed into obscurity
If Captain Syrup joined in the early 2000s, she wouldve had the choice of cyan or white, but not black/purple due to the fact that that design was released in 2008. Her inclusion also could've hinder the redesign from ever being created

Not only does Waluigi not add anything in terms of unique personality (he stole the rose thing from Dr Crygor now but that’s still not his own) but he actively diminishes Wario‘s character as a lone Wolf who doesn’t bother with partners so he can hog all the money to himself. Waluigi’s existence as his „partner in crime“ paints Wario as a weaker guy who needs back-up in his mischievous actions and is ok with sharing.
What are your thoughts on Wario partnering with Syrup, if he doesn't have to be painted as a "Lone Wolf"? Because I think a Frenemy dynamic would make for cool ideas and a much needed character dynamic. Syrup would be the brains of the two, as she's a Pirate Captain, as well as a Pirate Queen, to command a whole army of pirates to do her bidding. Sometimes, she's not afraid to do her own dirty work and fight with others on the battlefield; she just prefers to not get her clothes tattered. Wario would be the brawn of the duo, using his brute strength rather than his brain; but he can sniff out treasure and garlic whenever necessary. When teamed up, they would be either an unstoppable powerhouse, or a married couple that argues about everything.

@@aaronjones6299 well, a lot of media outside the games gave Mario a bit of personality to him: being a no-nonsense leader who sometimes makes the occasional joke and has a heart of gold. If that was part of his game character rather than be a blank slate, I would be okay with this.
Quite frankly, I think the reason they didn't use Syrup in Tennis is because the teamed up characters are meant to be PARTNERS - Wario and Syrup are incapable of working together (See: Ending of Shake It!). Waluigi is someone who is able to work together with Wario because his goals align with his without costing Wario anything. I will admit this is no excuse for later games, but still.
Wario and Syrup could be partner up because everyone else (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, etc) excluded them from the Tennis Match, and that made both of them mad. Or.. just make them now partners for no reason, like how Yoshi and Birdo became partners even tho Birdo was evil. Just use creativity. But still.. Wario and Waluigi aren't real partners either. Captain Syrup wants money, Wario wants money, Waluigi wants money. Wario and Waluigi partnering up also doesn't make sense.
The sport games already have all the main cast just hanging out (even Bowser). It wouldn't be hard at all to just write them partnering up to win with their endings breaking the partnership anyway (like Syrup just running off with the trophy while Wario's celebrating).

Thunder Comics Official Waluigi is Luigi's rival so that's why he was made in Mario Tennis. Captain Syrup would be a good idea for spinoff games but not as Wario's partner since they're more like enemies.
Waluigi is just Wario but purple and tall. He's just a clone, he has no unique original traits, he has no potential, he didn't even have a reason to exist since another more interesting character could've fulfilled it. Yeah Luigi and Daisy started out as clones, but they became their own characters as time went on. Waluigi exists for 20 years and is still a clone of Wario. "But that's because he didn't appear in main games!" Neither did Daisy, outside of her first appearance and Super Mario Run. Luigi did start out as a Mario clone.

Captain Syrup is the perfect choice for a playable "bad gal" character in Mario games she's villainous but not evil, much like Wario himself. I'm disappointed Nintendo came up with the idea of "Wapeach" which is kinda lame and too derivative instead of picking an already established character with personality like Syrup.
I think the canon is that Donkey Kong Jr is current Donkey Kong's dad, with Cranky Kong being the OG Donkey Kong from the 1981 arcade game (and Donkey Kong Jr's dad).
I've watched too many male-run UA-cam channels - I'll be honest, I got a bit of a shock hearing a woman doing a Mario-related analysis video instead of some guy. It's refreshing. I would enjoy seeing Syrup become relevant again (maybe she could be an alter-ego of Paulina?). But I don't mind the existence of Waluigi. He has potential to be a fairly unique character, just as Luigi did before Nintendo did end up making him feel more unique. Plus, I like to think Wario and Waluigi are the Scapelli Brothers from the SMB movie.
Well, at the time of Mario Tennis 64, the previous Wario game was Wario Land 3, which has already passed on using Syrup, seems like the main developers of the Wario series were already getting rid of her, as the next game Wario Land 4 gave Wario both a romantic interest (princess Shokora) and a female enemy (The Golden Diva) Syrup would had gone to the place where forgotten characters go with Wart, Tantaga and and all the other Wario enemies if it weren for "Goodfeel" who decided to bring her back for Wario Land Shake it (and I feel she is underused there)

Given that both characters came from the same company I don't see why the same standards couldn't apply to Syrup.

They just got done with using her across the franchise before Shake It! was developed. Might have to do with her being just a human and the WL devs figuring she didn't have anymore ways to be a boss (already made her use a monster/demon/genie/whatever to fight for her, already had her use vehicles/robots, the endings in II show Wario can send her flying away easy).
I love both characters but obviously Syrup deserves much more mainstream recognition. Waluigi is just a bad joke, but like a dad joke I can't help but laugh along with. Syrup, however, is an actual character! She absolutely already fit in the place they felt they had to invent Waluigi to fit into. She has an established and unique dynamic w Wario, she provides a stark contrast to the only other human females in the series, she even has her own theme and definable motivations. Not to mention the fact that she represents a very overlooked Mario spin-off series! This essay makes such a solid argument I'm upset I never saw it so plainly before lol! But, that's the Waluigi fan in me I guess. I never thought twice about the situation surrounding his origin 🤷♂️
How did I not run across this video before? This is an excellent critique and a very convincing argument for a criminally overlooked Mario character. On a related note, I never liked how Mona became Wario's girlfriend in the WarioWare series. Mona comes across as too nice for Wario's greedy and acerbic ways. Syrup would have been a much better choice in my opinion. They both love stealing treasure, they share a long and complex history together and Wario at least seems to harbor some feelings for Syrup (why else would he rescue someone who stood in the way of his precious money?). I envision their relationship as a borderline dysfunctional "on again, off again" affair, trading threats and insults one moment and making up the next.

EDIT - If we bring in the sidestory this video suggests, AND bring Fumihidi Aoke's released materials in as well, we now know that *Wapeach* has *a "Mother"* _and_ two "Fathers" On top of that, you could also consider a fan game called "Psycho Waluigi" which mentions Waluigi in a rivalry with General Hazel Nut. As a result, wapeach has a stepmother more capable of obtaining wealth for funding evil plans AND a stepmother who leads her own military...

I gotta admit; while I agree that Waluigi’s hat isn’t really unique, I’d argue that it would’ve been better to show images of the character caps from Super Mario 64 DS rather than the witch boss from Super Mario Land 2 (whose name I can’t really recall for some reason), as it’s a better showcase of how uninspired it is compared to other characters. In fact, given just how uninspired it is, that’s actually a perfect example of how fake that rumor really was now that I think about it. I mean you could literally just change the color and symbol and that would apply to literally almost ANYTHING regarding the rumor. Also that game is a REALLY underrated remake that I’d argue actually OUTCLASSES the original version, I mean yeah, the game was alright with just Mario and the controls were inferior to the original game but there were some neat ideas that were well executed and the minigames were pretty fun too. Really, the only things I didn’t like were the overuse of switch stars and the underwhelming glowing rabbits reward, that and they didn’t really fix the issue of kicking you out of a level after getting a star aside from the 100 coin stars. It mad sense in Sunshine and the Galaxy games because of the altered level design, and in the case of the Galaxy game duo sometimes the stars hovered over pits and other hazardous material, granted I’m not saying that I prefer it that way but there was a logical excuse in the later games. And while I wasn’t a fan of the aforementioned Waluigi rumor (especially since I REALLY can’t stand the character), that was really just propaganda SURROUNDING the game not a controversy within it. Yeah lots of characters where forgotten or left behind by Nintendo look at king k rool besides smash ultimate would be awesome to have him alongside syrup in a Mario spin off
Just came across this video while looking at wario let's plays. Very interest points, however, IMO It's not really a case of syrup being better than waluigi...it's more a case of wario being better than waluigi. While alot of ur arguements are pretty valid for why syrup gets little love....let's not forget wario is more cannon that syrup, and by cannon I mean he has more popularity than syrup, everyone knows his story as a greedy rogue, from the point of being a. marios rival, and b. an adequate antagonist replacing bowser/koopa. like you started in wario 2, wario saves syrup twice. Would waluigi save Luigi despite the possible hate? Probably not, that's assuming their brothers or relatives. However, I'm not really sure what they wanted to to achieve with her character in the first wario land. However, it was clear that she(syrup) was going to be trouble for wario in wario 2 and this became cannon. Then in shake it, she pretty much took the spotlight which could suggest that she deserves a spotlight...but that's as far as it goes. But by that point, is it too late to pose a case for giving her a bigger role? I'm unsure, Suggesting syrup is better based on looks doesn't really hold for an argument. It's all about wat the lore suggests.
But the real question is, can we get a "Wa" version of super Mario. Like, "oh no, Princess Shokora and Queen Merelda have been kidnapped by Rudy the Clown and Princesses Peach and Daisy are willing to Pay a band of outcasts to go save them, and they're only doing it for the money!!" It would b a 4 player game and it would have Wario, Waluigi, Captain Syrup, and Boshi as playable characters, and the 5th unlockable character is Wapeach, but her name would be Wache or something (pronounced as Waych)
I have a similar ideia for a wario land rpg. Wario, syrup, waluigi, a pyramid girl character and a chest character to fill roles similar to mallow and geno.

I imagine that she would be pretending to help just to take everything for herself in the end. Her personality is as crazy and weird as some of the bosses from the plataformers. She was a queen similar to the golden diva. The chest guy, is sorta of a voice of reason, he is very careful, very calm and wise, he is a bad person, but tries to be better. He was a pirate, his cause of death was his selfshnes and greed.
I do agree here. Waluigi is a meme at this point of how akward and shoehorned in he was. Syrup should appear in newer games as playable/main role. I mean so much potential wasted...maybe if we convinced Nintendo.......no that isn't gonna go through thier head, maybe smash 5 but I don't like smash...so you can go ahead

Well why waluigi is a thing was because they needed an evil luigi, much like how wario is the evil Mario. As for syrup, well it won’t make any sense to play tennis with your worst enemy, would it?

Although I only like Waluigi because of the memes the internet have made of him, it is valid to point out that indeed he hasn't made a single appearance in a main series game, and isn't even Wario's brother nor es he related to him (according to nintendo and charles martinet). When I first heard the "Wa-Peach" idea, I thought it was laughable, but I never realized it could just be a counterpart to peach. Then the fact that she could've prevented mario recolor #3 from existing stung even more. All those cringy memes, all those shitty smash requests and actual death threats could've been avoided if they just put Syrup in. It may have convinced them to keep her in the Wario land series too, potentially giving us more great games. Okay, it's official, you've Syrup-pilled me. Not that I needed a reason to hate Waluigi more.

Overal, I just find Wario's circle of characters (with the exception of Waluigi) way more interesting and intriguing than Mario's. Mario for me is just so... plain, too perfect, similar to Superman for some people. Wario, on the other hand is just so flawed that putting him in different suitations will always make things interesting, he's just so malleable, ironically, kind of lke Batman. And his social circle, as Syrup, characters like Shokora, Canolli, and the Wario Ware gang, feel so fresh in comparison to the cookie cut Maeio characters. At least for me, anyway. as an addition, she resembles red/ruby from dragon quest 8, which is a well known game in the west, and one of the most popular games in japan. [minor spoilers for dq8] they both are pirates, yangus (a chubby brigand) has the same rivality relationship, where he (along with the rest of your team) goes to a spot only for the treasure to be stolen by her, but he ends up saving her. she has the same size proportions with him (chubby vs tall). also it could be fun to have them partner up but still pick on eachother. she also is flirty with him and sends him to find something for her (Venus' Tear in dq8 vs the Bottomless Coin Sack in Wario Land: Shake It! .)
Captain Syrup can still get in if Pauline can be in more games so can Captain Syrup. Who knows Pauline needs a partner and Captain Syrup could be her partner.
The Wario Land series was the best thing to ever happen to the Gameboy. Part II in particular, with the various timelines. Briljant. Syrup has always been my favourite SMB universe antagonist (a morally dark grey pirate woman wearing actual trousers in the Mario universe!!!) It's almost like they accidentally injected some feminism in the Mario universe then got scared and refused to mention her again. Until Shake it, of course. Anyway, I want her back!
I respect your opinion, but I think Waluigi plays a pretty important role, Captain Syrup could definitely be with the Mario Cast, she just doesn't have to replace Waluigi.
I really don’t see how Syrup is taller than both Peach, Daisy, and probably Waluigi, it’s a 3 pixel difference and Wario is like 5’7”, so add three inches to that height and it’s 5’10”, she is only an inch shorter than Peach, and the same height as daisy, I would like to see her come back, but I don’t think in any way she is better than Waluigi, they have their pros and cons. Also, I majorly disagree with this video. I think Waluigi made more sense as a tennis partner. But I do think Syrup could be Wario’s second combination. Like a Mario and Peach like combination.

Waluigi just makes more sense for several reasons. There's the big one that him and Wario serve as interesting and exaggerated foils for the Mario brothers. There's the fact that it would make no sense for Wario of all people to have his series villain join the main cast so quickly when more "high profile" characters didn't even do that (it literally took King K. Rool over a decade to feature in a Mario game, and even then it was a sports game where he's considered no more special than common Mario enemies.) And finally, there's the fact that compared to Waluigi, Syrup's just kinda bland. She's essentially female Wario? But she's just a normal woman with none of Wario's more interesting design choices? There's no doubt in my mind that even if Syrup would've been in Tennis, she would've immediately been thrown in the same bin as Donkey Kong Jr. and never seen again, except for in some random fanservice cameo years later like what happened with Shake It. It just seems like a little much to have two unique villains in the recurring cast, especially when they have nothing to do with each other, and even then, there's far more interesting D-list villains to choose from.Take Tatanga for instance. A unique, one of a kind alien overlord? Heck, even Wart, who's both super obscure and canonically weak, could've been cool with his whole "king of dreams" angle. But Syrup? Visually she's just Pauline in pirate cosplay, and as a character she's just Wario without the endearing wackiness. She wouldn't have caught on even if given the chance.

No offense, as this was a pretty decent video, but the way you got your arguments across was kind of childish. It seems your only goal with this video was to undermine Waluigi, while praising Syrup. I definitely think Captain Syrup deserved a bigger role in the franchise, and I agree that she deserves to be remembered. I think she was ahead of her time, and I bet she could headline her own game today. I love the idea of an ongoing, not entirely platonic rivalry with Wario.

A common trope in Japan at the time was the "terrible trios" consisting of a woman, a skinny guy, and a muscular or fat shorter henchman. The whole Warupechi idea was scrapped because Miyamoto did not want to "create another Doronjo clone." Doronjo is the main villainess in the Time Bokan spinoff series "Yatterman" which ran from 1977-79. Perhaps this trio trope is the reason Syrup has not made an appearance in recent years.
Captain Syrup will get the pauline treatment sooner or later, she'll get her big chance in a new 3d mario or wario game and then start becoming a regular in the spin offs. Nintendo knows their female characters are really popular

She is supposed to be his bowser (of sorts), like k rool is to donkey kong (even though they're all in the same universe). I don't really how she was represented in shake it. Not because she was a temporary ally, but because 1: she didn't do as much in that game as much as when she was an antagonist, and 2: people who haven't played the originals mistake her as an ally. In my opinion, syrup (especially in wario land 2) works best as wario's antagonist. To write her off as just some clone of peach is really unfair to her character, and honestly, kinda insulting.

So then take it even further and make their partnership the OPPOSITE of Mario and Luigi's! Rather than liking each other and teaming up, they bicker and often try to sabotage each other.

Daisy, Syrup and Tatanga deserved pretty much the same, they both appeared in 2 game before Mario Tennis (3 if we count SMB Print World for Daisy... if this is a real game).
At the end Daisy got in, well that's great, but Tatanga and Syrup didn't... why? I mean why they should choose a character like Waluigi to join? A character without background or sense (or a good personality), now, since Daisy was drawn as Luigi's partner and Peach friend it's not her fault if they are not in, but Syrup was a great idea for Wario's partner and why not, Luigi's rival (Waluigi rivality was introduced in this game after all).
At this point why just don't take Waluigi and the possible WaPeach and replace them with Tatanga and Syrup? Oh well, Nintendo logic.

Like, Monkey Island is trying to force you to buy into Guybrush’s relationship with Elaine, even though he abused her earlier on in the game series, which I don’t see why he didn’t divorce her by the end of the series to marry Morgan instead (and that was before the TellTale Era of actually making your own decisions). Wario and Syrup, on the other hand, would’ve been a parody of the Monkey Island partnership cliche, minus the marriage. Wario and Syrup will be at each other’s throats, but at the same time, would have to learn to work together to share their riches and avoid being killed. Think Indiana Jones meets Pirates of the Caribbean.

The only time they've worked together was in shake it, and she was using wario to steal treasure for her so she could steal it from him. She's a smart manipulator. I was directed to this video by a Miiverse discussion about Waluigi joining Smash (as a playable character), where it was brought up by someone who really didn't like him. It's a pretty interesting video, and thanks for going in-depth about Syrup's past, as I skipped pretty much every Wario Land after the first game.
However, there's one point regarding Waluigi's inclusion that has been apparently overlooked in this video, which I noticed immediately when you've shown the other obscure characters that were brought back for Mario Tennis - They all share some traits with their supposed characters:
- Daisy is obviously a princess like Peach, both having a similiar taste in fashion (to the point that she's basically a pallette swap).
- Birdo is a bipedal dinosaur-dragon-lizard-like-whatever that weaponizes eggs, just like Yoshi
- And DK Jr. is, well, Donkey Kong's younger self... or his son, it's kinda weird. Anyway, he's obviously a monkey, just like regular DK (AFAIK Nintendo/Camelot went with DK Jr. instead of Diddy Kong because there was apparently back then uncertainity whether or not they could use Diddy Kong, who was created by Rareware)
With these things in mind, I guess Camelot hadn't Syrup on the radar as she doesn't really share any visual traits with Wario (aside from coloration). Furthermore, I also think that's why the initial concept of a "Wapeach" was scrapped in favor of creating Waluigi, as the Wario/Waluigi duo dynamic would mirror the Mario Bros., which are as a team more prominent than Mario and Peach are (in fact, games where Mario and Peach actually team up over the course of the story are still rare to my knowledge).
In conclusion, while I think that is indeed unfortunate that Syrup didn't got much love from Nintendo since the early Wario Land games, I wouldn't really blame this on Waluigi.

Honestly, the points you made are so right it really doesn’t make sense why Waluigi is here. Actually, the reason why I found out he was made in the game is because Wario had no partner, which makes no sense in the first place. because the character you said, in all the examples you put in one, I feel like most of the cut scenes they had in the Mario sport would’ve been way funnier if she was there with Wario since they hate each other and they do have the same personality, but you could tell they they would make a good team. thanks for the video and everyone have a amazing year and God bless you all.

After I learned about her character, I immediately want to see more of her as a reoccurring character in the Mario franchise.

If Captain Syrup joined in the early 2000s, she wouldve had the choice of cyan or white, but not black/purple due to the fact that that design was released in 2008. Her inclusion also could've hinder the redesign from ever being created

Not only does Waluigi not add anything in terms of unique personality (he stole the rose thing from Dr Crygor now but that’s still not his own) but he actively diminishes Wario‘s character as a lone Wolf who doesn’t bother with partners so he can hog all the money to himself. Waluigi’s existence as his „partner in crime“ paints Wario as a weaker guy who needs back-up in his mischievous actions and is ok with sharing.
What are your thoughts on Wario partnering with Syrup, if he doesn't have to be painted as a "Lone Wolf"? Because I think a Frenemy dynamic would make for cool ideas and a much needed character dynamic. Syrup would be the brains of the two, as she's a Pirate Captain, as well as a Pirate Queen, to command a whole army of pirates to do her bidding. Sometimes, she's not afraid to do her own dirty work and fight with others on the battlefield; she just prefers to not get her clothes tattered. Wario would be the brawn of the duo, using his brute strength rather than his brain; but he can sniff out treasure and garlic whenever necessary. When teamed up, they would be either an unstoppable powerhouse, or a married couple that argues about everything.

Quite frankly, I think the reason they didn't use Syrup in Tennis is because the teamed up characters are meant to be PARTNERS - Wario and Syrup are incapable of working together (See: Ending of Shake It!). Waluigi is someone who is able to work together with Wario because his goals align with his without costing Wario anything.
I will admit this is no excuse for later games, but still.

I've watched too many male-run UA-cam channels - I'll be honest, I got a bit of a shock hearing a woman doing a Mario-related analysis video instead of some guy. It's refreshing.
I would enjoy seeing Syrup become relevant again (maybe she could be an alter-ego of Paulina?). But I don't mind the existence of Waluigi. He has potential to be a fairly unique character, just as Luigi did before Nintendo did end up making him feel more unique. Plus, I like to think Wario and Waluigi are the Scapelli Brothers from the SMB movie.

Well, at the time of Mario Tennis 64, the previous Wario game was Wario Land 3, which has already passed on using Syrup, seems like the main developers of the Wario series were already getting rid of her, as the next game Wario Land 4 gave Wario both a romantic interest (princess Shokora) and a female enemy (The Golden Diva) Syrup would had gone to the place where forgotten characters go with Wart, Tantaga and and all the other Wario enemies if it weren for "Goodfeel" who decided to bring her back for Wario Land Shake it (and I feel she is underused there)

Given that both characters came from the same company I don't see why the same standards couldn't apply to Syrup.

They just got done with using her across the franchise before Shake It! was developed. Might have to do with her being just a human and the WL devs figuring she didn't have anymore ways to be a boss (already made her use a monster/demon/genie/whatever to fight for her, already had her use vehicles/robots, the endings in II show Wario can send her flying away easy).

I love both characters but obviously Syrup deserves much more mainstream recognition. Waluigi is just a bad joke, but like a dad joke I can't help but laugh along with. Syrup, however, is an actual character! She absolutely already fit in the place they felt they had to invent Waluigi to fit into. She has an established and unique dynamic w Wario, she provides a stark contrast to the only other human females in the series, she even has her own theme and definable motivations. Not to mention the fact that she represents a very overlooked Mario spin-off series!
This essay makes such a solid argument I'm upset I never saw it so plainly before lol! But, that's the Waluigi fan in me I guess. I never thought twice about the situation surrounding his origin 🤷♂️
How did I not run across this video before? This is an excellent critique and a very convincing argument for a criminally overlooked Mario character.
On a related note, I never liked how Mona became Wario's girlfriend in the WarioWare series. Mona comes across as too nice for Wario's greedy and acerbic ways. Syrup would have been a much better choice in my opinion. They both love stealing treasure, they share a long and complex history together and Wario at least seems to harbor some feelings for Syrup (why else would he rescue someone who stood in the way of his precious money?). I envision their relationship as a borderline dysfunctional "on again, off again" affair, trading threats and insults one moment and making up the next.

As a result, wapeach has a stepmother more capable of obtaining wealth for funding evil plans AND a stepmother who leads her own military...

I gotta admit; while I agree that Waluigi’s hat isn’t really unique, I’d argue that it would’ve been better to show images of the character caps from Super Mario 64 DS rather than the witch boss from Super Mario Land 2 (whose name I can’t really recall for some reason), as it’s a better showcase of how uninspired it is compared to other characters. In fact, given just how uninspired it is, that’s actually a perfect example of how fake that rumor really was now that I think about it. I mean you could literally just change the color and symbol and that would apply to literally almost ANYTHING regarding the rumor. Also that game is a REALLY underrated remake that I’d argue actually OUTCLASSES the original version, I mean yeah, the game was alright with just Mario and the controls were inferior to the original game but there were some neat ideas that were well executed and the minigames were pretty fun too. Really, the only things I didn’t like were the overuse of switch stars and the underwhelming glowing rabbits reward, that and they didn’t really fix the issue of kicking you out of a level after getting a star aside from the 100 coin stars. It mad sense in Sunshine and the Galaxy games because of the altered level design, and in the case of the Galaxy game duo sometimes the stars hovered over pits and other hazardous material, granted I’m not saying that I prefer it that way but there was a logical excuse in the later games. And while I wasn’t a fan of the aforementioned Waluigi rumor (especially since I REALLY can’t stand the character), that was really just propaganda SURROUNDING the game not a controversy within it. That aside, great video and keep the nice work.👍

Just came across this video while looking at wario let's plays. Very interest points, however, IMO It's not really a case of syrup being better than waluigi...it's more a case of wario being better than waluigi. While alot of ur arguements are pretty valid for why syrup gets little love....let's not forget wario is more cannon that syrup, and by cannon I mean he has more popularity than syrup, everyone knows his story as a greedy rogue, from the point of being a. marios rival, and b. an adequate antagonist replacing bowser/koopa. like you started in wario 2, wario saves syrup twice. Would waluigi save Luigi despite the possible hate? Probably not, that's assuming their brothers or relatives. However, I'm not really sure what they wanted to to achieve with her character in the first wario land. However, it was clear that she(syrup) was going to be trouble for wario in wario 2 and this became cannon. Then in shake it, she pretty much took the spotlight which could suggest that she deserves a spotlight...but that's as far as it goes. But by that point, is it too late to pose a case for giving her a bigger role? I'm unsure, Suggesting syrup is better based on looks doesn't really hold for an argument. It's all about wat the lore suggests.
But the real question is, can we get a "Wa" version of super Mario. Like, "oh no, Princess Shokora and Queen Merelda have been kidnapped by Rudy the Clown and Princesses Peach and Daisy are willing to Pay a band of outcasts to go save them, and they're only doing it for the money!!" It would b a 4 player game and it would have Wario, Waluigi, Captain Syrup, and Boshi as playable characters, and the 5th unlockable character is Wapeach, but her name would be Wache or something (pronounced as Waych)
I have a similar ideia for a wario land rpg.
Wario, syrup, waluigi, a pyramid girl character and a chest character to fill roles similar to mallow and geno.

I imagine that she would be pretending to help just to take everything for herself in the end.

The chest guy, is sorta of a voice of reason, he is very careful, very calm and wise, he is a bad person, but tries to be better.

Although I only like Waluigi because of the memes the internet have made of him, it is valid to point out that indeed he hasn't made a single appearance in a main series game, and isn't even Wario's brother nor es he related to him (according to nintendo and charles martinet). To which I totally agree Syrup should get noticed as part of the franchise and actually start appearing in the spinoff games.

When I first heard the "Wa-Peach" idea, I thought it was laughable, but I never realized it could just be a counterpart to peach. Then the fact that she could've prevented mario recolor #3 from existing stung even more. All those cringy memes, all those shitty smash requests and actual death threats could've been avoided if they just put Syrup in. It may have convinced them to keep her in the Wario land series too, potentially giving us more great games. Okay, it's official, you've Syrup-pilled me. Not that I needed a reason to hate Waluigi more.

Overal, I just find Wario's circle of characters (with the exception of Waluigi) way more interesting and intriguing than Mario's.
Mario for me is just so... plain, too perfect, similar to Superman for some people.
Wario, on the other hand is just so flawed that putting him in different suitations will always make things interesting, he's just so malleable, ironically, kind of lke Batman.
And his social circle, as Syrup, characters like Shokora, Canolli, and the Wario Ware gang, feel so fresh in comparison to the cookie cut Maeio characters.

also it could be fun to have them partner up but still pick on eachother.
she also is flirty with him and sends him to find something for her (Venus' Tear in dq8 vs the Bottomless Coin Sack in Wario Land: Shake It! .)
Captain Syrup can still get in if Pauline can be in more games so can Captain Syrup. Who knows Pauline needs a partner and Captain Syrup could be her partner.
The Wario Land series was the best thing to ever happen to the Gameboy. Part II in particular, with the various timelines. Briljant.
Syrup has always been my favourite SMB universe antagonist (a morally dark grey pirate woman wearing actual trousers in the Mario universe!!!) It's almost like they accidentally injected some feminism in the Mario universe then got scared and refused to mention her again. Until Shake it, of course.

I respect your opinion, but I think Waluigi plays a pretty important role, Captain Syrup could definitely be with the Mario Cast, she just doesn't have to replace Waluigi.

I really don’t see how Syrup is taller than both Peach, Daisy, and probably Waluigi, it’s a 3 pixel difference and Wario is like 5’7”, so add three inches to that height and it’s 5’10”, she is only an inch shorter than Peach, and the same height as daisy, I would like to see her come back, but I don’t think in any way she is better than Waluigi, they have their pros and cons. Also, I majorly disagree with this video. I think Waluigi made more sense as a tennis partner. But I do think Syrup could be Wario’s second combination. Like a Mario and Peach like combination.

Rool over a decade to feature in a Mario game, and even then it was a sports game where he's considered no more special than common Mario enemies.) And finally, there's the fact that compared to Waluigi, Syrup's just kinda bland. She's essentially female Wario? But she's just a normal woman with none of Wario's more interesting design choices? There's no doubt in my mind that even if Syrup would've been in Tennis, she would've immediately been thrown in the same bin as Donkey Kong Jr. and never seen again, except for in some random fanservice cameo years later like what happened with Shake It. It just seems like a little much to have two unique villains in the recurring cast, especially when they have nothing to do with each other, and even then, there's far more interesting D-list villains to choose from.Take Tatanga for instance. A unique, one of a kind alien overlord? Heck, even Wart, who's both super obscure and canonically weak, could've been cool with his whole "king of dreams" angle. But Syrup? Visually she's just Pauline in pirate cosplay, and as a character she's just Wario without the endearing wackiness. She wouldn't have caught on even if given the chance.

The Wario series already excluded Syrup from games. It wouldn't be hard to transition her into being more of a secondary villain with Wario.

Waluigi has effectively nothing beyond being a skinnier Wario with possibly better hygiene. Syrup's already taller than Wario and can be made to look meaner than Peach.

Looking at their modern designs she's no more Pauline than Peach is. And again, Waluigi doesn't really have much to set him apart from Wario ignoring memes. He's not even much of a foil to Luigi beyond the most obvious way possible.

Donkey Kong Jr. didn't appear in more games after that because he was replaced by Diddy Kong. Diddy Kong is quite literally modern Jr, he started out as a redesign of Jr before becoming Diddy.

No offense, as this was a pretty decent video, but the way you got your arguments across was kind of childish. It seems your only goal with this video was to undermine Waluigi, while praising Syrup. The point of this video is not to make Waluigi look bad but to prove that she could have replaced him as a Wario partner, which is pretty well-explained.
