No other ship in any other science fiction setting had the presence, the grace, and the beauty of the original Enterprise.

"She's a beautiful lady and we love her!" - James T. Kirk, TOS episode 'I Mudd.'
Star Trek has had a lasting effect on our culture. I was once witness to a comment by the Chief Engineer of the ship I was serving in when, after he had received a serious chewing out from our Captain after failing an exercise I overheard him mutter "Where's the Transporter Room on this bucket? I want to get off."

It's good to know that this piece is still well preserved. The Starship Enterprise and her crew had a profound impact on science, technological developments and space exploration. The original studio model does indeed deserve ist place among historical legends in the museum.

The TV series inspired so many people to go into the field of space and exploration. There's once an interview with Scotty and they talked about how many people had told him they became engineers just because of his role in Star trek. This was a show that inspired!

I loved Star Trek since I first saw it at 11 years old. I ended up working in the "Bowels" of several commercial buildings in the "Engine Room" ( Boiler Room ) It's amazing how many Star Trek "Engineering" and other sound effects I recognized, over the years, that surely must have come from or been inspired by real life Boiler Rooms. One example is the pulsating "hum" of large electrical transformers that are the same as the background sound in Scotty's Engine Room. I always felt right at home. P.S. - Scotty's "habit" of over estimating the repair time of a job that makes you look like a "miracle worker" is a real thing ! Many are the times I wrote a work order for 4 or 5 hours for a job that I KNEW I could / would finish in 2.5 or 3 hours. I was a budgetary hero.

I'm simultaneously getting chills and on the verge of crying. I'm so happy they gave this model the treatment it deserved. She looks beautiful, and I look forward to seeing her again in person (the last time being in the basement gift shop, unlit and with that horrible, over-weathered paint job). Super-cool they've shared the color scheme with modelers.

Back in 2001 we had this exact model at my work, near out motion capture stage. I worked as an animator at a company called Foundation Imaging. I was working on a different show, but the Star Trek Voyager guys were busy updating the effects for Star Trek The Motion Picture for a re-release dvd. They requested the model and we had it for a few months....they claimed they needed it for reference purposes, but in reality they just wanted to see it up close and not behind glass at a museum (we are all nerds at heart). We were told if we touched or damaged the ship we'd be out of a job. :) This was long before the model was restored, it was definitely showing some age though I don't remember cracks in the paint or anything.

It's really nice to see this project completed and the model's appearance so beautifully restored. I saw the model there, where it was on display in the gift shop after the previous restoration, and whoever did that one really went much too heavy on the weathering. I'd read that the rationale for that was that the model was thought to have looked like that during series production, but that level of detail didn't come through given the 16mm film on which the effects were shot, and the standard definition CRT TVs people watched the show on back then. I still think the weathering was much too heavy. Now it looks right.
Pity they can't acquire the movie refit model, give it the same treatment, and put it on display next to the original one.

In 2005, when the idea of the restoration project began, I remember seeing several photos of this model (by then it was already in the Smithsonian Institution) where it was seen that one side of the ship lacked aesthetic details and even had cables that They were outside the structure, that is, a totally neglected side because it was not filmed in any shot, to save design costs. So the scenes were always filmed with a single profile, then the film was inverted and thus "both sides" were available when only one was filmed. Only some decals were replaced, which were printed in reverse for those reversed shots. By the way, the restoration achieved is excellent, Star Trek was an icon of a generation that was inspired by this magnificent series, including many scientists, astronauts and engineers who have made some things that he anticipated come true.

Given her influence to modern sci-fi, modern space technology, design, and flight and inspiration for hundreds of thousands of people who hope to see humans travel among the stars, and not to mention her pedigree of being the fictional ancestor to the Super Carrier USS Enterprise and is considered a historical important artifact to the Smithsonian I think she earns the title as ship.

There were TWO models used the original Star Trek series: a 3.5 foot long Enterprise and the 11 foot model. Source: "The Making Of Star Trek" by Stephen E. Whitfield and Gene Roddenberry.

Yes. The 3.5 foot stand in model was auctioned off a few years ago, in the great Paramount purge of Star Trek props and costumes at Christies.

Very cool. I was lucky to have been standing next to the camera when the 1st Tribble was sold on the "space station" Since they were not filming on the "Ship" that day. I was able to wander around the set.

Although they are probably all gone I wonder what the original model makers would have thought if they knew that their work would be so appreciated.

I'm sure they would have been thrilled. It's completely unlike CBS "remastering" the original series and just basically throwing out all the work from the original modelmakers and special effects personnel in favor of bad CGI.

@@karekarenohay4432 You're a fool. Those effects were state of the art for the time and budget. Maybe you think we should get replace all the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz with CGI ones. Also, you obviously have terrible taste if you think the "remastered" effects are good CGI. Even its defenders say CBS intentionally made it bad because they didn't want it to look like 21st century effects.

    • @karekarenohay4432
      @karekarenohay4432 4 роки тому +1

@@amightysailingman NO, the effects of the original Star Trek were cheap and bad at their time (literally cheap). Nobody saw ST for their effects, but for the good Sci-fi stories. And the remastered efects are VERY GOOD. Of course you can not put some XXI century CGI fireworks in a 1966 TV show and expect it works. It won't. The effects were intentionally restrained (NOT BAD!) to fit the rest of the show.
The flying monkeys of The Wizard of Oz are OK, because The Wizard of Oz was not about flying monkeys. But Star Trek always was about space exploration, and it is a valid option to improve the space effects if you don't want the show get old badly, and still catch new fans and viewers in the XXI century.
