GoldCurency o duolingo !! It’s a really good app, you can download it on your phone it’s free. It’s fun to use and after your done with the app.. you have to start reading books that are Italian. Listen to italian music, radio and start speaking and work on your pronunciation. That’s what I’m doing

As a German I have to say: no wonder that Italy is the land of our longing, yearning and desire - look at the food, look at the weather, look at the people, listen to the language. And I haven’t even started thinking about art and culture and architecture and music.
I wonder why Greece and Egypt didn’t have their Renaissance: sure, Schiller translated Greek Classics, Schliemann excavated Troja, the Arabs preserved quite some classic greek writings when Europe was still in the Dark Ages. But the romantic relation Germany has to Italy is more like a love story that’s going back hundreds of years uninterrupted. - I mean: even the US thinks of itself as the new Rome; after Constantinople was the second Rome, and Moscow was the third Rome.
Sure: there are other great civilizations with a relatively unbroken past, and „love-stories“ between nations: lots of the eastern philosophies go directly back to India, lots of love-hate relationships within Asia: China, Japan, Korea. Sure: there are Professors and University Departements and Societies that study those parts of the world and keep relations. But what I’m getting at: still all roads lead to Rome! There’s rivers of cultural heritage. If I remember correctly, there’s like 25000 sites all over Europe where ancient Roman Villas were excavated / found.
Ok, I guess Egypt lasted thousands of years, and had its own Renaissances during the times of the Greeks and the Romans: even today there are Egyptian Obelisks in Paris and London and New York. But Rome has a dozen of them! A Dozen! They’ve been standing in Rome about as long as they stood in Egypt!!
Sorry, got carried away a little. In fact I don’t know all that much about Italy or Rome or anything I spoke about: but that is a testament how deeply ingrained that culture is, how intertwined. - Even politics today: I think the creation of the Euro was economically a bad idea, but now that we have it, we can no longer undo it without grave side effects: how could any German with a little bit of love for history suggest that we could go forward faster without Italy or Greece? That’s like ditching Grandma. - Citizens from the US, Japan or China can treat European countries as tourist destinations, but Germans can not: it would be like visiting your own heart or your brain or your right arm (- economically speaking Germany might still be the backbone for another generation).
(And I had not even mentioned the moral debt Germany still has towards the rest of Europe due to what our Grandfathers did in WWII...)

Yes, it is so funny. The first time I brought my husband who is from Italy to meet my family, I chose an Italian restaurant that I liked. He was looking at the menu asking me what is an Italian salad? And telling me there is no chicken parmigianno or spaghetti and meatballs. HAHAHAHAHAH.... I guess meatballs are for soup or aperitivo. Thank you for putting this video out. I agree with Amen...subtitles please!

Grazie Lucrezia e Vincenzo! A very good interview, however, as a novice Italian language speaker, I found it a bit difficult to understand the nuances of the conversation because of all the background noise, i.e., traffic, others' conversations, etc. I got the gist of it, but had to guess at a lot of the words. Otherwise, molto interessante!

You know the traditional saying that french is the most beautifully spoken language (from a Euro.standpoint) is that French is the language of love and is beautifully spoken but in my humble opinion Italian sounds better.

Too the defense of these American restaurants, it is not gross food. Rather variations of a culture that has adapted to it's new home. When Italian immigrants arrived to the US, they had to work with the ingredients they found in their new home and so the Italo-American menu was born. It may be strange to you but to us in America it is a very delicious and in fact edible cuisine. So, it may be "different" to you but by no means "inedible". Instead of comparing maybe there should be a segment on variations of a beautiful and delicious cuisine. Just a suggestion. :)

+curlyqs100 Don't worry. Although Vincenzo was saying that it is ridiculous to have variations such as cream in spaghetti carbonara, he has "his" recipe for Sicilian Arancini" with mozzarella, a cheese from the other side of the Straits of Messina. The Sicilian nonnas would say MAI !!! but there you go - some variations are OK, for some, when it suits. Molto divertente. Just remember Christopher Colombus' nonna never had pomodori, polenta, patate, peperoncini, ciocolata. Italian food now varies greatly from 500 years ago. The world is evolving and variations are the norm.

Grazie a te! Esatto! I miei provengano da Roma. Any real Roman knows la carbonara is derived from when American GIs brought their rations of bacon & eggs to Italy and the local Roman chefs. like my own nonna, made carbonara. Cultures do evolve and change and that is-almost always-for the better. I just mention carbonara because that is the most obvious example of Italians "sampling" as they say in music, from Americans, and making it something utterly their own.

curlyqs100 what americans or other foreign people don't understand is that in Italy we eat regionally!! that means that I (sicilian guy) eat different things than a person in Milan for example... if u come to my town in Sicily you will never find any restaurant that has carbonara in the menu!! instead you will find sicilian dishes. if u wanna know... at home I ve tried carbonara so many times.. then when I was 11 my parents brought me to Rome for a vacation and there I had a carbonara... i found out that it was the first in my life because at home I was using pancetta and parmesan and I was sure that was the real taste but it wasn t! so if u are in Rome don t order cannoli or if u are in Sicily don t order carbonara... everything in its right place
