From what Brian Henson said, that was the mood they were going for...it was supposed to be an acknowledgment that Gene was too old to dance, but they'd always have their memories.
I hope I feel like I l just love this new job on his system own life story ture life movie made into the office box office post office in movie theater TV series season start hollywood show
Not sure thats the intention but it is extremely moving. In our age of fake celebrities, he was the real deal. This is one of the best scenes from the Muppet show

I love how he looks directly into the camera (omg!, melting!) No fluff, no fake scenes, no pretense, just pure class! This is how I want to remember his last days in show biz. Hella cool, man- well done.
Yes, he has nothing lost since he had danced with "JERRY" Since I saw that clip on TV in my childhood I love it Here he brings the same natural grace over that made him so symphathetic
i love that they recreated the street scene for just a few beautiful seconds of film. you don't find that kind of detail anymore. what an incredible tribute.
Even so many years later, his performances continue to bring joy to so many people's lives. He was, and still is, such a stunning man. This brought tears to my eyes. RIP Gene Kelly
When they got Gene for the show, he told them that he didn't want to do Singing in the Rain, and they actually worked it into the show. Life imitating art and creating a beautiful thing.
I don't know if it's just me, but when he starts to sing 'I'm Singin' in the Rain', and then he walks down the sidewalk with his umbrella, it's a bitter-sweet moment.
I work in recreation with patients with dementia/Alzheimer's disease; one of the activities that I came up with was/is "Celebrity of the month." As Gene Kelly's birthday would've been on August 23, the first time I presented him in this activity, along with a simplified biography(due to the patients' abilities to comprehend), photos, the famous dance in "Singin' in the Rain"--which lit up many faces!--I also showed this clip from the Muppet Show which I have on VHS. Even that brought smiles to their faces; interestingly, some commented about there being a "poignancy" about this clip--that no one would ever forget Gene Kelly in what was probably his most iconic role and no matter where he went, he'd be remembered best for the famous dance in the rain. Rest In Peace Gene Kelly...a true legend.
It was the last episode produced. The last episode AIRED was the Roger Moore episode (which started with the "In the Navy" sketch that Jim thought was the best thing they ever did), but this was the last one taped. What's more, this sketch was the last thing shot on the final day of production, and given that what Gene said about the song and why he never sang it any more was entirely true, there was no possible better way to wrap.
@@rdfox76 they also had a subplot where Beureagard (did I spell that right?) thinks the world is ending, referencing that it was the last produced episode.
There's no man like Gene and there never will be, he's the ultimate dancer, choreographer and artist! I've been in love with him for 40 years now and will still love him the day I die!
SWITCHdonkeyFLIP I have to agree and I wasn't even born when Gene Kelly was in his prime. I mentioned in a post that I work in Recreation with patients who have dementia--their faces light up when they see Gene's famous dance in the rain...I wonder who knows that Gene had 102, 103 fever when he filmed the famous scene...but hey, he was the co-director(with Stanley Donen); no telling him not to dance!
You have to admire the man for singing then. At his advanced age, his singing voice had started to go, hence why he sang so softly to get the notes right. But he still sung. And he is still missed today.
1:55 made me emotional all the time. I watched this during my elementary years and every time singing in the rain would start I would literally start crying really hard and really hard. If I sing this, I would really be in tears afterward.
Janet Miller I know he was too old to dance here, and he knew it too. He even looked at the camera when he closed the umbrella as if to say “not anymore guys.” Still, it’s a great video, and a great end to the muppet show
What a true genius. Not only with dancing but with his voice. This sound touched my heart as a child. And I will never forget seeing it at the age of six
this clip makes me want to cry... :-( I love gene kelly...and singing in the rain was one of my favs...they just don't make them like him anymore...a true legend
THE FIRST TIME I EVER SAW SINGING IN THE RAIN WAS WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD AND TO THIS DAY I STILL CANT STOP WATCHING IT, IT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MUSICALS I SAW THE MUPPETS WHEN I WAS 5 YEARS OLD AND I STILL LOVE IT RIP GENE KELLY I MISS YOU MY AMAZING STAR
This made me cry. So sad, so sweet, so beautiful. Thank you for everything, Gene - What would my teens (in the 1950s !) have been without you and all the musicals? And, from what i read below, I am apparently not the only one who was moved to tears. My love to all who loved this!
The first song was "S'Wonderful" from "An American in Paris," the second "You Were Meant for Me" from "Singin' in the Rain," and the last one was "For Me and My Gal" from "For Me and My Gal."
that is the sweetest thing i have ever seen. and the funny thing is, he is debonair and wonderful-- and totally at home with the muppets. some actors are a little awkward with them, but he manages to be as smooth with them as with everything else.
Who knows whether it was intended or not, I can totally agree with that beautiful interpretation. And yet, beautiful, it is so saddening. I cannot get over how perfectly that song's entire career with Gene was resolved, which is why your idea is spot on. Never, and I mean never will I see something like this again in today's era.
I feel the same way. I know that he couldn't dance forever, but it's hard to get my heart to believe it. It's even tougher now knowing that he's left this world. Thank God for preserving his movies and all the other footage so that we can enjoy Gene in the present day!
im 18 and im crazy about Gene Kelly!!!his face and his voice always makes me smile..When I got into problems or sad..I always open youtube search for Gene Kelly..and guess what??It heals my mood and suddenly I smile again..RIP Gene..I wish u were in my generation..^^
Truly a graceful response to his earlier abilities, his image in the public's heart. Didn't embarrass us or himself by trying to still be young. I hope I can pull off that kind of growing old too!
I love Gene Kelly, I remember watching this episode on T.V. I was SO excited to see him on t.v and singing this song. when i was little I wanted to tap dance just like him...but of course that didn't work out but i tried.
I know that no matter how old we know he was here, everyone who saw this wanted to see him break out into one of his crazy dances :) But still...very very nice video. This is automatically a favorite
Gene Kelly I love you forever you have a great house in all of our hearts and you were the kind of man with a sex appeal! Gene you were the most goregeus man in movies and was also talented as hell! You were an EXTREMELY great singer and OUTSTANDING dancer and a very shifted actor and you deserve to be on the AFI charts because you are my precious baby!!!! Love you Gene and R.I.P beautiful man!
i'm 18 and have been in love with Gene Kelly since i was about 8! He really is truly amazing and this is showing him at his most vulrenable and best :) x
I don't know how that man did it but even at this age he makes my hart race, and I am 21 years old so I wasn't even around when he was a big moviestar. He was a very charismatic man and I just love him forever!
Even as an old guy, he sure does make me swoon! I am 16... and completely in love. What a wonderful, classy man. They sure don't make them like that anymore.
I was always so mesmerised by Gene's dancing that seeing this for the first time, I realize that he also was a great singer. Gene and Fred Astaire were the complete pack of the golden years of Hollywood.
the muppets ended when henson died. this is too good, and for kelly to make fun of himself like this, really shows how amazing this show was in its original run.
What a great way to introduce kids to the classics! I see what you mean, though. Now that Gene's gone, watching this is a little bittersweet, but what a way to honor him also!
I'm only 20 and I'm also inlove with classic movies, they're just great!! i always call them "feel good movies", when im down i put on a classic.. and everything feels just fine :)
I know he was too old to dance here, and he knew it too. He even looked at the camera when he closed the umbrella as if to say “not anymore guys.” Still, it’s a great video, and a great end to the muppet show
No one will see this but since this was the last thing the muppet show filmed, I loved how it was just a somber note before the end. All they could do is just gather together and remember the good times and what better way is there to go out.
From what Brian Henson said, that was the mood they were going for...it was supposed to be an acknowledgment that Gene was too old to dance, but they'd always have their memories.
Makes the perfect last broadcast. I saw it that time on t.v.
Gene Kelly Was So Tired of
Always Being Asked to Sing in the Rain ☔️
But Did it for The Muppets
What a Legend!!!

I rate this up there with Ben Vereen singing Pure Imagination. It's so amazing.
Yes

Magical
Yes, he has nothing lost since he had danced with "JERRY" Since I saw that clip on TV in my childhood I love it Here he brings the same natural grace over that made him so symphathetic
all us shall learn gene : how to get old gracefully
i love that they recreated the street scene for just a few beautiful seconds of film. you don't find that kind of detail anymore. what an incredible tribute.

When they got Gene for the show, he told them that he didn't want to do Singing in the Rain, and they actually worked it into the show. Life imitating art and creating a beautiful thing.
Art imitating life, but otherwise, dead-on.
I don't know if it's just me, but when he starts to sing 'I'm Singin' in the Rain', and then he walks down the sidewalk with his umbrella, it's a bitter-sweet moment.
Exactly that! ❤️🙏

This was the last episode of The Muppet Show, Ever. And R.I.P. Gene Kelly.
+BuddyBoy600alt That made me cry just thinking about it.
BuddyBoy600alt If that's the case, there was no better way to go out.

Great
That... was... beautiful. That ending was just amazing. Kids today will never know the legend that is Gene Kelly.
SWITCHdonkeyFLIP When I have kids one day, they will know Gene Kelly.
+Shannon Gold hahaha. That's right! show em
SWITCHdonkeyFLIP I have to agree and I wasn't even born when Gene Kelly was in his prime. If I ever have kids, I will make sure they at least see "Singing in the Rain." I couldn't stand to never share this guy's brilliance with anyone else.
SWITCHdonkeyFLIP um hello I was born in 2002 and I know gene Kelly when I saw him in singing in the rain
You have to admire the man for singing then. At his advanced age, his singing voice had started to go, hence why he sang so softly to get the notes right.
But he still sung.
And he is still missed today.
Yeah he always had that soft voice though, in my opinion which is probably not relevant here. But I’m not complaining. It was a sweet voice he had
Still gorgeous all those years later. Love you Gene. 🤗
this version is so gentle and nice. bring me a flow of happy feeling and memory
1:55 made me emotional all the time. I watched this during my elementary years and every time singing in the rain would start I would literally start crying really hard and really hard. If I sing this, I would really be in tears afterward.

in tears now reading this. Such a graceful. and classy way to accept his age and his fans' love.

I will always love you, Gene 💕
Miss you Gene Kelly I was never alive at the same time as you, but it feels like I was. You changed so many lives and were forever grateful

I agree
Wow...that was absolutely beautiful
I love Gene Kelly, I remember watching this episode on T.V. I was SO excited to see him on t.v and singing this song. when i was little I wanted to tap dance just like him...but of course that didn't work out but i tried.
My favorite moment of this moment was when Scooter and Gene sang together. Their voice's bled so well, and it makes me happy.
he was still so awesome and he sang the songs so beautifully i wanted to let his voice rock me to sleep.
He had that sweet voice that could melt your heart
Gene Kelly was an extremely handsome man and a class act.
Absolutely one of my favorite performers of old school Hollywood. Seems like he'd be one of the coolest guys ever.:)
I know that no matter how old we know he was here, everyone who saw this wanted to see him break out into one of his crazy dances :)
But still...very very nice video. This is automatically a favorite

Super video and song

Great memories
This was adorable. .Gene was always amazing!
This is so incredibly sweet and beautiful. ♥️
At the 2 minute mark, Gene Kelly finally gives them what they want.

*Beautiful* 🎼🌧 *Singing in the Rain* 😍 *RIP Gene Kelly* ❤💙
Thank you so much for sharing this vid with us. Gene was an amazing person.
i got a little teary-eyed when he started singing :')

Gosh, I'm crying! It so sad that this legend isn't around any more.
How does this not have over a million views?
he defiantly was the best, singing in the rain is one of my favourite classic movies!!
I always love ❤️ the original shows from the past instead of the shows today this show to me will always be best.
the muppets ended when henson died. this is too good, and for kelly to make fun of himself like this, really shows how amazing this show was in its original run.
Just when I thought I couldn't love him more.
Its Gene Kelly.
He will always be in style
This sure pulled at my heart...wow.
I remember crying when I saw this episode. It broke my heart that he didn't sing it!
Mr Kelly, you are sorely missed :(
"I give up, Gene, this vamp goes with too many songs!" Heh!
:) this is sweet and Gene Kelly, love him
Oh, when he started singing 'Singing in the Rain', it gave me chills.
I miss the muppet show soooooo much !
What a great way to introduce kids to the classics! I see what you mean, though. Now that Gene's gone, watching this is a little bittersweet, but what a way to honor him also!
So beautiful!
Just Gene singing with Rowlf at the piano would make this scene a treasure, and Henson had Piggie behave herself for once.
His smile... ❤
I love every single part of this
El amor de mi vida, que lindo homenaje, me emociona verlo aún hoy, gracias a los Muppet
the muppets are awesome
I'm only 20 and I'm also inlove with classic movies, they're just great!! i always call them "feel good movies", when im down i put on a classic.. and everything feels just fine :)
I know he was too old to dance here, and he knew it too. He even looked at the camera when he closed the umbrella as if to say “not anymore guys.” Still, it’s a great video, and a great end to the muppet show
It was 1981, he was only 69. Other entertainers have danced at far older ages. But this was a lovely piece, and worked really well.
2:50 Sometimes you can still catch me walking down that street.
So much heart. Thanks so much for posting.
No one will see this but since this was the last thing the muppet show filmed, I loved how it was just a somber note before the end. All they could do is just gather together and remember the good times and what better way is there to go out.
I love how it seems like this really did come from him not wanting to sing it anymore it really does make it even more special
oh my god, this made me SO happy
That... was... amazing!
GENE KELLY.....I LOVE FOREVER!!!!!!
This brings back memories
Gene... Always charming
Oooh, it made me cry at the end :')
im only 20 as well and love old musicals and gene kelly :)
I love you Gene-3
Gene become the guy he gave the umbrella to :)
Lovely,
lovely....I can't see him again... :(
there aren't any gene in this world...he was the best ever... and, I'm only 17!
There are so many lovely comments here.
Happy Birthday Gene Kelly
