Here in England, back in the 70s and 80s, our parents and us all watched 1951 Scrooge every Christmas. It was a tradition. My sister continues the tradition with her family, and me and my wife also watch it every Christmas. In fact we watched it together on Monday, with mulled wine and mince pies and a tear in our eye. Lovely film, with wonderful wonderful effects for the day. Until next year !! 🙂
Thanks for the Christmas Gift Dan. My Dad first showed me this version and yes it is the best. Me and my Best Friend (who became my Best Man) would watch this all the time and sing its praises. Oh and in the book the Spirit of Christmas past was a child, as in the Muppet version. Which BTW is actually very good. Sir Michael Caine is exceptional and notice he never blinks. Oh and watch in the background for a shop that reads "MMicklewhite" -- I'll let you guys figure that one out,
This is by far the most wonderful adaptation of The Christmas Carol!!! I lived on long Island during the 60's! We had 5 stations that added channel 5 and cannel 11! Connecticut and Public Broadcasting!!! WOR ran this version all day! I watched portions of it throughout Christmas!! At dinner my Dad would always ask me for my input and I would faithfully add "God bless us, Everyone!"😂😂😂
The best version. I watch it every Christmas Eve. I look for the man in the mirror every viewing. When Scrooge first cracks, and wants to have a word with Bob Cratchit, while viewing Fezziwig's party, the acting is just sublime. Gets me every single time.
I definitely remember seeing that 28 minute animated version on British television when I was a kid. I have also seen the colorized version of this film, but I prefer not to talk about that
Merry Christmas Dan and Subscribers. I have watched this wonderful version faithfully on Christmas Eve or early Christmas Day for 30 consecutive years. I am now 67 and I believe I've seen it close to 40 times through broadcast TV, cable, internet and my own purchased copy. I have never tired of it and often recite Scrooge's lines before he speaks them. "Barbara Allen" always brings a tear to my eye and it will be playing in my head for weeks to come. Thank you Dan for this most welcome gift at Christmas.
Sim gave the very best Scrooge performance. I remember seeing June Lockhart appear in the 1938 film version of "A Christmas Carol" as Belinda Cratchit alongside her real-life parents who were playing Bob and Emily Cratchit. How cool is that, Dan?
In my view Sim's genius is in playing Scrooge as sympathetic, even underneath all that orneriness. He is not an evil man but someone who has become detached from his own humanity through the events of his youth and young adulthood. I think Charles Dickens may even have preferred this version himself. At least I like to think so.
You are absolutely correct. This movie is a must-see and a classic. I know that for several, the must-see movie is, "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart. Although it is a wonderful movie and one of my favorites, personally, Christmas is not the same if I do not watch the 1951 Christmas Carol version. Again, you are right, there have been several adaptations of this movie thru the decades, but not one of them comes close to the 1951 version. Dan, you do such an amazing job with this channel. It's about the only thing informative and entertaining that one can actually enjoy and look forward to the next video. Any thoughts on doing a video of what happened to the live size Firefox airplane (Clint Eastwood)? Keep up the good work and a very Merry Christmas to you and all your family.
I absolutely love this version of Scrooge. To this day, when he visits his nephew and the maid gives him that smile, it still brings a tear to my eye. She did so much and never said a word. I hope you and your family and all the UA-cam viewers of this show have a very happy Christmas.
DUDE! You are killing me... in a good way. This version of "Scrooge" with Alistair Sim is our family's favorite also. The editor of this film later directed the version of "A Christmas Carol" with George C. Scott and I love that Alistair voiced Scrooge in the Oscar winning short by Richard Williams. Merry Christmas.
Thank you! Alastair Sim is a related to me, part of the clan that separated in the 1870s; some went to America, some to Wales, and some to Australia. He is the DEFINITIVE Scrooge for me! And what a cool house you grew up in!
You brought back a big memory with this, Dan. In the mid-90s I was part of a radio play adaptation of Scrooge. I played the ghost of Christmas Future. Didn't say a word. Simply sounded like a constipated Lurch. (I have a very low voice.) It is part of the Christmas Playlist at a series of radio stations going on 30 years! How cool is that?!
loved robots song ! thank you robot -Merry Christmas to a wonderful channel . i remember watching SCROOGE when i was little and yeah it was like watching the exorsist . . . beautiful piano music at the end too ! wow , what a talent . Dan i didnt know , you are the man !
Merry Christmas Dan and Deb. Not sure if you've seen it. I recently discovered another Christmas Carol adaptation. "Carol For Another Christmas" was a TV movie from 1964 written by none other than Rod Serling. Packed with a solid cast as well, including Peter Sellers, Robert Shaw. Steve Lawrence, Eva Marie Saint, Pat Hingle, Ben Gazzara. It's a real treat to finds new Serling works I haven't seen before.
Thank you so very much for this wonderful christmas day gift Dan it is allI could of hoped for! Merry Christmas to you & Deb, and have a Happy New Year.
Thank you so much Dan for this video and Merry Christmas to you. This was my father's favorite version of "The Christmas Carol". As a kid growing up In the mid to late 70's It would air late night every Christmas Eve on our local PBS station here in South Jersey and I remember so vividly waiting in anticipation to watch this movie with him every Christmas Eve. I have this version of the movie on VHS and DVD and still till this very day every Christmas Eve at around 11pm I put it into my DVD and watch it and remember how much I enjoyed watching this movie with my Dad and how much I miss him.
ha! i mentioned the visible crew-man before watching the vid - and you mentioned it in the vid! thanks for all your wonderful content, Dan - i hope you are enjoying a safe, happy and healthy holiday season, and all the best to you in 2025! love from canada!
Dan, this version is indeed the best movie adaptation of Dickens tale. Sim is capable of showing the extent of both ends of Scrooges life. From the miserly, spiteful, side, to the joyful reclaimed soul of his transformation. Also, Dan you have become part of my family with your amazing ability of bringing your insights and humor to the memories of my youth. Merry Christmas my friend!
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 🤶 Mr. Patrick Macnee is the voice of the Cylon Imperious, opening narrator, and Count Iblis in the original Battlestar Galactica.....
I'm 75 and as you, I grew up watching this version every Sunday afternoon before Christmas. This is the very few versions that Marley shows the lamenting of the spirits, as in the book. Merry Christmas from my house to yours.
I find it interesting that "Grandma Green" is visited by three ghosts in the "Big City Greens" 2019 episode, "Green Christmas.";) I like the "black-and-white" performances of Alistair Sim and Reginald Owen, spreading Charles Dickens' message... Thank you for your mini Vince Guaraldi tribute at the end of the video!
Dan, thanks for closing out with the musical reprise. Despite your protestations I still enjoy your version. Interesting thing about casting Scottish actor Alastair Sim, apparently contemporary audiences were more familiar with the comedy roles that he had performed in movies. From what I understand, there was a reaction similar to Michael Keaton being cast by Tim Burton as _Batman._ Kind of the opposite of all the action heroes cast in the movie _Airplane_ like Robert Stack, Peter Graves and yes, even Leslie Nielsen who had played romantic leads and a starship captain in _Forbidden Planet._ To really appreciate Sim's casting everyone needs to look up his 1950 movie, _The Happiest Days of Your Life_ to see his performance in _Scrooge_ as a 1951 audience would have. Wishing you and your family a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. And my Happy New Year is going to be in part because of your videos. Thanks again.
This is still my favourite version as well and still watch it every year myself. Merry Christmas Dan, to you and yours. May you all enjoy this time of joy and may your new year bring you all the joy and love there is to have.
This has always been my favorite film version of Scrooge! I love pointing out the guy in the mirror mistake. Dan, thank you so much for all the fun and interesting work you share. I have been a fan and follower since before you had 1K subscribers. You are my favorite UA-camr. Merry Christmas to you, your lovely wife, and family! 🎄Can’t wait to see everything you have for us in the new year! Thanks again for all you do my friend!
Dan: Thanks so much for covering this; I've watched many "Christmas Carol" movies over the years, but to me, Alistair Sim will always be the "laboratory standard" by which all the others are measured. I always kind of enjoyed the George C. Scott version too (1970s?). Merry Christmas to you and your family. Looking forward to more great content in 2025.
We watch it every year .....sadly my dad passed away in October, he was due to spend Christmas with us, but this was one of his favourite movies and we planned to watch it Christmas eve....but he always said that if ever an actor was born to play a role, then this was Alastair Sims....ps also in England....Merry Christmas,Dan love the channel.
Fantastic video Dan! This version is and has always been my personal favorite. I agree with your comment that it comes off more like a horror movie in some parts. So great you covered this. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
That's a heck of a turret on your old house! Christmas Carol really was a gothic horror story, so the film noir approach of the 1951 version was appropriate. My favorite version has always been that 1971 Richard Williams animated version (which you can find on UA-cam). Marley scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid.
Scrooge/A Christmas Carol is my favorite Christmas movie period. I remember it airing every year back in the 70's. I remember that animated version from that time too. Because of it, every time I hear 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen', I think of Scrooge. Thanks for the music at the end. That was nice.
Thanks, Dan. I'm a big fan of your channel, and I loved your heartfelt Christmas message to the viewers. Of course, I'm also a big fan of this movie, and I learned many new things about it from your video. I also wanted to thank you for playing the piano at the end - as a piano player myself I must say I loved it. Wonderful rich chords in your arrangement. You inspired me to get the music out for these two songs and play them again myself. Many thanks. Merry Christmas to you and yours, and best wishes for a Happy New Year.
This will always be my favorite version of A Christmas Carol. My brother and I watched it as a "late show feature" on a local channel...when television had a late show before signing off.
Merry Christmas to you and yours also! When I was a kid in NJ, we would watch "A Christmas Carol" on WPIX channel 11 on Christmas Eve while dressing the tree! I still watch it every Christmas Eve. (Did so last night)
Another great episode of your show. It sounds like you and I pretty much watched the same movies and cartoons for Christmas growing up. And yes I think this the best version of a Christmas Carol, but only in its B&W version. The acting and effects are top-notch. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 😎🎅🤗
Merry Christmas, Dan! Funny thing: We just watched that last night! A really great film, and like you: It's our favorite version of the story. Thank you!
My favorite version of, "A Christmas Carol". I remember watching it on VHS. 📼 It just gets everything right and the performances are fantastic. I also love "A Muppets Christmas Carol" as well with Sir Michael Cane.
The Alistair Sim version was my first experience of A Christmas Carol on film and holds a special place in my memory. Have watched it, and several others, in the days leading up to Christmas 2024. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Dan.
Dan I want to say thank you. You have brought me back to my early childhood days of Christmas with the Charlie Brown Christmas and Scrooge I really enjoyed watching and remembering
Merry Christmas to you Mr. Monroe. Thanks for the fun vids. A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite books and the Musical Scrooge with Albert Finney is my favorite of the Scrooge adaptations, but I like them all.
Great movie. I believe it to be the best version of this classic. Dan, you and your wife continue to have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Looking forward to what you bring us in the coming year. I'd like to say that you are like Santa. Every time you upload a new video, I feel like it's Christmas again. Your videos have and always will be the best thing on UA-cam. You are awesome and a true gentleman.
Thank you Dan for taking the time on Christmas Day to make us a video. Nice present to open on Christmas afternoon. Happy Christmas and peace in the New Year!
🎼"Thank you very much! Thank You Very Much"🎼 Thank you Dan for the seasons greetings. Happy Christmas to you and your lady. Thank for this cool video! My favorite A Christmas Carol movie is the musical of SCROOGE in technicolor wide screen. I watched that film in the theater in 1970.
My late mother used to know Alastair Sim, "How cool is that"...Love his Christmas Carol but I have to say my favourite film of his is the "school for scoundrels"... Merry Christmas to all.....
Dan love your channel as it is a nice escape from all the craziness currently happening in the world today. For me as much as I love this movie of Scrooge, the 1970 Albert Finney version of Scrooge was my first introduction to the Dickens classic. Merry X mas to you Dan. Love the Robo voice , and you are a fine musician too.
Yes a great old movie and a merry Christmas to you too Dan. By the way, here in the UK the actor you showed playing the young Ebeneezer - George Cole - would go on to become very well known indeed - mostly for his TV work in a long running series called 'Minder' among other roles.
Merry Christmas to you too Dan. This version of A Christmas Carol is my favorite as well. I saw it the other day LOL. I agree, I do not want to see this film in color. Have a happy new year!
I just watched this a couple of days ago! Looked up the music featured in it. Came away totally fascinated by the results. Curated the UA-cam links to the various pieces from various musicians. The "Barbara Allan" song was a tear jerker. "Oranges and Lemons" was a creepy inclusion. And, of course, "Sir Roger de Coverly" is present in this movie...as it in the book. Had a fun time with all of this... I often wondered if the beggar, Sam Wilkins, was somehow related to Scrooge's old friend and fellow Fezziwig apprentice, Dick Wilkins. Strangely...I fell totally in love with the 1971 Richard Williams animated "A Christmas Carol" long before I ever saw the 1951 version. Ah...for me...since 1981...dear Michael Hordern will always be my favourite voice talent for Gandalf. He did "The Lord of the Rings" for BBC Radio in 1981. Mahalo for your great Vince Guaraldi rendition. Guaraldi goes great with Peanuts... They both made me a life-long jazz enthusiast. Again, I hope you;re having a Mele Kalikimaka and wish you all Hau'oli Makahiki Hou for 2025!
Here in England, back in the 70s and 80s, our parents and us all watched 1951 Scrooge every Christmas. It was a tradition. Hail to England
Merry Christmas to all and thanks Dan for this presentation.
Watching it now. Love it.
Thank you.
You couldn't have picked up a better theme for this day, Dan. And Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks, you too!
@@MoviesMusicMonsters Scrooge 1951 is my favorite bnw movie of all time. Was it yours too Dan?
I have to agree this is the best adaptation of a Christmas carol.
It was good, but the 1984 is at least it's equal.
its good, but the George C Scott is the best IMO
Merry Christmas Dan
Thanks for the Christmas Gift Dan. My Dad first showed me this version and yes it is the best. Me and my Best Friend (who became my Best Man) would watch this all the time and sing its praises. Watched the colourized version for about 5 minutes. Stopped watching and will never ever view any part of it again.
Far and away, this is the definitive filmed version of “A Christmas Carol”.
Merry Christmas Dan. I'm happy to be part of this group of nostalgia nerds. I mean, we turned out to be pretty cool.
How cool is that, Dan?
this version is my favorite because of the lockhart's as the cratchetts and also leo g caroll as one of the ghosts
Merry Christmas to you too, Dan.
Merry Christmas Dan! Definitely a masterpiece that changed my life 😂❤🎄
In my view Sim's genius is in playing Scrooge as sympathetic, even underneath all that orneriness. Christmas Bonus!
The Alistair Sim version scared the beejeesus out of me. Apparently, telling ghost stories at Christmas was a thing in it's day.
Until a few years ago “A Ghost Story For Christmas” was an annual Christmas Eve special on BBC Tv ( and they were usually terrifying!)

Wonderful Christmas surprise, and best ending to a video ever. Dan is a very talented and emotive pianist. Such a pleasure to hear.
YES!!! Thanks for mentioning the 1971 animated version! Brought back so many memories!
Now I have to contact my therapist as it still scares me.....
Dan, Merry Christmas. This is perfect watching on Christmas Day! Thank you. Edit: That Christmas song was awesome!
ha! i mentioned the visible crew-man before watching the vid - and you mentioned it in the vid! thanks for all your wonderful content, Dan - i hope you are enjoying a safe, happy and healthy holiday season, and all the best to you in 2025! love from canada!
That piano music from Charlie Brown ! ..... took me back!! ... what a great show that was!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Robin :-) much appreciated
Yes he was and he was awesome in Battlestar Galactica :-)
Not only the best film version of the story, but the best Christmas horror movie of all time as well.
I'm 75 and as you, I grew up watching this version every Sunday afternoon before Christmas. This is the very few versions that Marley shows the lamenting of the spirits, as in the book. Merry Christmas from my house to yours.

This is my wife's favorite version. We watch every year and enjoy it very much. Merry Christmas Dan to you and yours.
You forgot my favorite version of Christmas Carol with Mr Margoo.
A true classic film. Thank you for making this for us, Dan. I hope your family had a wonderful Christmas together. God bless my friend.

Merry Christmas to you and yours, Dan.
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
Merry Christmas Dan! That was a really cool video! You played Linus & Lucy SO beautifully...You're Awesome! 🥰
Thanks so much!!
Watched it last night. This is a part of my background Christmas movies lineup.
We did too! Made both of us cry. This is Dan's wife :) Merry Christmas!
@VoiceCoachDebbie Pleasure to meet you. We absolutely adore you guys.

Merry Christmas, Dan. Of many UA-camrs, you are one of the truly genuine and appreciative content creators.
Merry Christmas Dan!
Love all the “A Christmas Carol” version. And yes the Alastair Sims version is on the top of my favorites.
This is still my favourite version as well and still watch it every year myself. Merry Christmas Dan, to you and yours. May you all enjoy this time of joy and may your new year bring you all the joy and love there is to have.
This was a real surprise and a great watch. Thanks for another Christmas present! Loved the Piano at the end!!!
Merry Christmas, Dan! Thank you for the surprise video!!
Merry Christmas to you too my friend!
Great choice Dan! It is my personal favorite as well as tradition to watch it every Xmas eve when everyone has gone to sleep. Merry Christmas 🎄
It wasn’t a stage hand in the mirror. It was a ghost😂
Thanks so much for sharing your favorite version of A Christmas Carol with us. Merry 🎄 Christmas!
It’s a tradition in my family’s and now my home to watch this film every Xmas ..truly a classic…merry Xmas my friend

Dang I spoke to soon , the piano at the end was the bow on the gift. Thanks again.
Thank you my friend :-)
Thanks Dan! I watched this movie a lot as a kid-and it scared me too! Merry Christmas!🎄
The Charlie Brown theme at the end of your show with you playing piano...WHAT A GREAT ENDING OF YOUR SHOW....THANKS
Thank you my friend
Thanks, Dan. I'm a big fan of your channel, and I loved your heartfelt Christmas message to the viewers. Of course, I'm also a big fan of this movie, and I learned many new things about it from your video. I also wanted to thank you for playing the piano at the end - as a piano player myself I must say I loved it. Wonderful rich chords in your arrangement. You inspired me to get the music out for these two songs and play them again myself. Many thanks. Merry Christmas to you and yours, and best wishes for a Happy New Year.
Thank you Dan!!!
Merry Christmas!!!
This will always be my favorite version of A Christmas Carol. My brother and I watched it as a "late show feature" on a local channel...when television had a late show before signing off.
Merry Christmas to you and Deb! Thanks for sharing about Scrooge - one of my all time favorites! And I especially enjoyed to piano outro! Awesome!!
It's THE best filmed version of 'A Christmas Carol'!
This is my fave Christmas Carol. 2nd is the one with George C. Scott. 👍😊
Merry Christmas Dan and a Happy New Year! 🎅🎄🎁❄️🙏🌟
Merry Christmas to you and yours also! When I was a kid in NJ, we would watch "A Christmas Carol" on WPIX channel 11 on Christmas Eve while dressing the tree! I still watch it every Christmas Eve. (Did so last night)
Loved the robot's Christmas carol. Merry Christmas to you and yours Dan, thanks for all the videos.
This version and the animated version that played on CBS every year were my go-to Scrooges. Thank you for covering this 🎉
Another great episode of your show.
Merry Christmas Dan 🎉🧑🎄🎁
What a pleasant surprise, Merry Christmas to you, Dan Monroe and wife, etc. I did not know that was a 1951 version. Wow thanks.
Thanks, Dan, you went above and beyond with this one.
Merry Christmas to you Good Sir, and all of the other viewers of this Awesome Channel !!
Merry Christmas Dan. Thank you so much for this. I watch this version. Wish you a blessed day.
Merry Christmas Dan and thank you for doing this, this was also my favorite version. 🎄❤️🙏
Merry Christmas to you and yours!! Thank you for thinking about all of us!
Thankyou Dan and Merry Christmas to you and yours and of course Robot 😊
Thanks for this little gem. It was a pleasant Christmas surprise!!
Hi Dan, wishing you a fantastic Christmas, and best wishes for you and channel in 2025. Thanks for the vids.
Mark😊
