$60 an hour is pretty much the minimum I would do jobs for. The people who want to argue with that…. Have never owned a landscaping business or just don’t know what time is actually worth. Time is one of the most valuable things in life.

I completely did our landscaping on my own, minus hiring two guys to chain pull 6 Yew bushes away from our foundation for $450. The labor is intensive. I would never accept less than $60 per hour for the reasons you stated also. This turned out great, and hopefully the homeowners follow up with some Preen and get some quality mulch in them beds. Awesome job as always!

I use an edger, a rake, my hands, and DIY weed spray to clean up beds like this.
    1. I use a basic edger blade to make the border.
    2. I use a serrated blade to rip everything up.
    3. I rake that up, bag it.
    4. Repeat steps 2 & 3
    5. Blow out beds into piles with blower
    6. Bag that
    7. Pull whatever remains
    8. Bag that
    9. Hard rake the area to expose any remaining weeds.
    10. Spray vinegar based weed mix if plants are there and-or will be planted. Spray bleach based weed mix if only landscaping rocks/material will be installed. The bleach stays in the soil and prevents anything from growing for awhile.
    11. Install new plants the following day or install landscaping material the same day.

Very interesting video. I like your explanations. So glad to hear you do a true cost analysis and breakeven. I really like that you use your equipment to do the job. Not interested in lawn care videos that show running back-and-forth with branches, debris, and trash in their hand. That type of labor is harder and isn’t efficient.

They have gas powered Tillers that can get 75% of that done, in 25-35 minutes.. and they have them that are 12” wide to get between plants easier.. and to make it even easier, weed eater it all down to the surface and from there tiller below grade

$60/hr or $1/min is the same I charge for my standard lawncare service (Edge, trim, mow, blow, clean-up). I only start the clock when I'm on the property and working and if I have to go back to the truck to work on something like put more trimmer line in, the clock then stops. I find that to be a lot more fair to the customer instead of adding surcharges for travel time to their property beings I will do multiple properties throughout the day. I don't schedule on Saturday or Sunday unless a customer agrees to pay me at least time and a half for it.

Whenever I get estimates like this I get about 10% of them. It’s because it includes a lot of physical labor, it’s tedious, there’s a good amount of planning, you have to do it as near perfect as possible bc every little piece of grass and weed will show.

We do our fair share of jobs like this. For the most part not as profitable for our time and effort but it does help to fill gaps in our schedule, especially during the winter months when work is slow. We discount our labor price nearly half compared to summer rates just to have something to do rather than sitting on granny’s couch watching tv all day.

To clean out that difficult grass growing in the beds, I've used a standard edger and held it at an angle (almost horizontal). It cuts right through the grass and tills up the ground really well.

Although no one "enjoys" paying taxes, I do appreciate the highways I drive on, the sacrifice that our military, fire and police give, the library I go to, and the many other people and things that keep this country going. The older I get the more I slow down my physical labor but I sure do as much as possible myself to save money. I've learned that the people I do hire have to make a decent living and they are doing the hard work, so hats off to them.

I don't get why this homeowner just doesn't do all of this themselves unless they are unwell. If they are busy then doing some gardening is great exercise and stress relief. Also there is no need to use mulch if the bed is regularly weeded and turned. Its not a very big area and would make a nice project to do every couple of weeks. The owner would find that its a great win for them and a lot cheaper than getting you to do it for them!
