I do not care for alcohol. I have no desire to drink it, or smoke anything. I do like my coffee. As a bishop I rarely if ever refused a temple recommend if someone drank coffee or tea. I never encouraged it and I didn’t ever ask. I have had people confess then and now and we sort of laugh about it now. Then I just told them it was between them and the lord. The stake president and area authority would come and have their buttons practically bursting. Overeating is part of it. So how can they be overweight but people are chastised for coffee or tea?
Great podcast!!! Thanks for bring so opened and honest and for seeing so clearly 😊 I put the church behind me 2 years ago after being faithful for 45 years. Yesterday, 62 years old, I had my first "Irish coffee" and LOVED it 😊
Love my Coffee and Tea which actually have some health benifits 😊 But it’s ok to go fill up on soda all day and you can still have your recommend what in the world are they doing? It is time to give it and let go you have made many changes over the years And that is one needs to be changed ASAP 😊
It's funny, I was thinking this morning about you should make a video on the word of wisdom then tonight here it is. You read my mind bishop. Subscribe
Such a good video! Problems happen most of the time due to lack of education. Listen to your body, definitely drink water in between alcoholic drinks, and know that you can have fun with or without alcohol. I love my work family because at our employee retreat and annual conference we look out for each other, reminding one another to hydrate and making sure no one goes too far. Funny story about my “coming out” after I left the church a couple years ago. I work remotely so only see my work family once or twice a year. There are two other Mormons at the home office. Two years ago at the employee retreat I thought “screw it…I’m going to be authentic”. After our final night event where I just had a couple of White Claws, the event planner brought the still half full keg back to the resort. About 15 of us stood out front and dutifully finished off the keg per her request 😂. We were visiting, laughing, drinking and just enjoying the time together. One of the other Mormons came up to me (mind you, I’m a 63 year old woman and he’s a man in his 40s), and he says “oh, are you being a bad girl?” What?! I turned to him and with a smile on my face said, “nope…just being my authentic self!” About 8 months later at our annual conference we actually had a great conversation where he asked me my reasons for leaving. He agreed with most of my reasons and told me his sons were no longer in the church and his wife just likes the community. He pretty much inferred he’d be out if not for that. Cheers to being able to be authentic 🥂
First, great video! Second, I was a convert/member for a couple of years about 10 years ago. I gave up all caffeinated drinks a few years before for my own reasons. But, I don’t remember if it was a Bishop or another very orthodox member, I asked if herb tea served hot was against the Words of Wisdom. Whoever I asked replied they didn’t know as it is a “hot drink”. One of the first things I put on “my shelf”. Another thing is the hypocrisy of drinking hot drinks which to me, considering the times, meant caffeine, is that I I have family members who are very devout LDS that drink the hell out of Diet Coke and Mountain Dew! ( and I wasn’t allowed in the Temple when they got married - I wasn’t “worthy”! Last thing, Joseph Smith is not the only one to get that”revelation “. The SDA and I believe Muslims also adhere to that practice…
It's the same with the overall Mormon population. The church claims to have 17 million members, but onlt 4 or 5 million of them have anything to do with the church.
I crossed a brother once in the hall of the church house, as he was cracking a monster energy drink. I told him he would be better off health-wise to drink a coffee rather than that thing. You would have thought I called his grandmother a bad name🤣
One of the reasons that I never drank (Baptist) was not because of my faith, but because my dad was a police officer and I got to see and read the accident reports from DUI accidents. I also had friends who were weekend alcoholics and how much it messed up their lives. But frankly can’t stand the taste. The only one I found somewhat tolerable were wine coolers, but they also cost much more than a good iced tea or soda. 😂 Yeah being cheap is a good way to stay away from alcohol.
I have found that arriving at the point where one “does not give a shit“ is an essential part of achieving true adulthood. Of course it’s important toremain effective in life, and respectful to others.
Nathan, if you'd like to try an alcoholic drink, I suggest you start with something like the alcoholic root beers or ciders. I don't care for regular beer or dry wines, but I like sweet wines such as Riunite Lambrusco, blackberry cider, etc. My wife likes a little Fireball and Coke or orange cream liquor. I'll drink an occasional Long Island iced tea or mudslide.
I am grateful for some parts of the wow. It along with strict moral standards kept me out of trouble. But tea and coffee is a joke. I dont mean to keep bringing up Joseph but he said wine is good to brighten up the spirit. He had the jailers bring them a bottle of of wine to help steady their nerves.
Alcohol has clear downsides and I don't see much of a point to it. Coffee and tea however have a lot of health benefits and are wayyy better for you than the energy drinks and diet coke that many of the member drink... Overall word of wisdom needs to be done away with.
I was baptized at 18. My parents partied hard when I was young. I hated watching them get drunk and do stupid things. It was never a problem for me not to drink. But now I consider myself a member. I do drink, but I have rules for myself and I know what I can handle and I don't go farther. I think there definitely needs to be some education about things. I see lifelong members quit the church and go so far to the other side that it just floors me. I am thankful I wasn't raised in the church. Despite the drinking I was taught morals and right from wrong and so I know all of the things I believe have no connection with the church. I am glad I can come home from work and drink a little while I am making dinner. It's the best end to the day. And I love drinking with my sister and bonding with her over a drink. I was always the stick in the mud and I hated it. None of my kids married members and we are the stuffy in laws and I hate it. My husband still is not all in with drinking in front of our kids. Even though all of them but 1 drink and cares if we drink.
I typed that wrong!! I AM A NON MEMBER!! I quit going after covid. That was the final straw! I had trouble with several things I just shelved because " the church is not a bad place to be" . I couldn't take it anymore
Just know that alcohol is a toxin that has to be processed by the liver. Thus the liver is distracted a bit from its other 500 functions and as a result will perform less optimally. No big deal if the person drinking does so in moderation and doesn’t have other health problems, but in modern society it’s more and more likely people are dealing with insulin resistance, obesity, liver disease, diabetes, and so on and so forth. Ironically a lot of those problems are a result of high sugar content and associated high sugar blood levels common in Mormon affinities for soda and ice cream. So it’s good Mormons don’t drink. Complete opposite story for black coffee and green tea…all of us, Mormons included, should be drinking those without added sugar or a zero-sugar substitute like monkfruit or allulose, maybe a small amount of organic raw pure honey.
As a ex Mormon I always had a problem with the word of wisdom. In John 2: 1-11 Jesus turned water into wine, wine is alcohol. I’m a Christian now I can drink alcohol but I don’t because I don’t like the taste.
If we stop and think would a loving father keep you out of heaven because you had coffee or tea ? It is the most absurd doctrine in the whole world , the D& C says that the word of wisdom are guidelines not commandments But the brethren have taken it upon themselves to say hays best for people lol It makes my blood boil to think I was being controls and manipulated for so many years I hope whoever reads this you will do your own research and not allow anyone to tell you what you can drink 😊
You don't have any experience with MMJ...yet! You know that coffee was a slippery slope! 😂 All jokes aside, MMJ has allowed me to discontinue medically-approved high dose morphine for a rare hereditary neuromuscular disease. I was pleasantly surprised when the Church came out & said MMJ, when prescribed, is okay.
Word of wisdom applies to members not over eating to the point where one becomes overweight or obese. Yet many members along with non members are overweight or obese. Our country is in trouble health wise. So for someone who drinks coffee or tea cannot hold a temple recommend but the overweight or obese member can obtain a temple recommend. This is not congruent at all. I don’t drink alcohol, coffee or tea nor do I drink energy drinks nor soda. I also eat healthy to the point that my BMI is 19.1 so I’m not overweight or obese. But still there seems to be an issue with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with word of wisdom. When it gets down to it, it’s just not my call and glad I don’t have issues with the word of wisdom. But I also don’t treat members who struggle with weight or coffee or tea or smoking as if they are bozos. We are supposed to be kind and loving no matter what.
12:38 Well it makes sense if your religion teaches that the god of the religion was once a man like themselves. And because that god limited because it didn’t create all things and is limited by the laws of space and time then the god is simply an only a couple of clicks above the doctor. And the doctor clearly would know more than the god, because god isn’t always up on the latest medical information, he’s tired up with distribution of tithing blessings.😂
The word of wisdom is a complete mess. No one gets it and sparked many debates lol. Hot chocolate and soda are actually worse with its sugar content and caffeine is in a lot of foods including chocolate, so is alcohol to some extent. I will add that In bad cases people need to be prescribed alcohol to stay alive. I knew members try and stop a guy from taking medication once. They didn’t get that it could kill him without it. Moderation is the key and that’s not just LDS revelation , it’s common sense.
Love my Coffee and Tea which actually have some health benifits 😊 But it’s ok to go fill up on soda all day and you can still have your recommend what in the world are they doing? It is time to give it and let go you have made many changes over the years And that is one needs to be changed ASAP 😊
