Adding a parking spot to a driveway can increase the driveway’s usefulness, keep the vehicle safe and away from busy streets, and even provide an extra spot for repairs. And while it’s not exactly a DIY project, it’s helpful to understand the steps on how extending a driveway with asphalt is done.
You Might Need Permission
In many municipalities, the sidewalk and even some of the yard may belong to the town. Adding a parking space that may affect the town’s property will require permission. On top of that, the town may require a permit. While neither item is usually a big deal, homeowners should do their due diligence and check with the town first.
Hire an Asphalt Contractor
Asphalt requires special equipment, techniques, and knowledge, so it’s best to hire a contractor. Knowing how to slope the 300-degree asphalt before it hardens is critical, else there can be low spots that collect water or rain may run off in the wrong direction.
Mark the Utilities
Installing an asphalt driveway requires some excavation, and contractors need a general idea of where the utilities lie. For this reason, asphalt companies will call utility marking agencies to come out and mark the yard wherever the gas, sewer, water, or underground electricity travel under the yard.
Where to find it?
Mark recruits the help of a local asphalt contractor to install a parking spot for a homeowner on a busy street.
Contact utility locating services in preparation for any project that requires digging. Once water, gas, and sewer lines that run underground are identified and marked, it’s safe to proceed on to digging.
To prep the space the crew will dig down about 15” to get below the frost line and use a specialty
compactor, called a drum vibratory roller, to compact the soil to establish a solid base. Add a layer of crushed added for proper drainage. Pour the asphalt base and surface layers, compacting between each layer.

To those criticizing this video and others like it:
From what I have seen over the decades, they've covered a lot of DIY projects, and perhaps are looking for new material (no pun intended).
Although not all of us have excavators or even plate compactors, the goal of such videos is to familiarize the homeowner with the process, so that they know what is involved. Of course, directions to check out UA-cam comments with advice and final approval from contractors with decades of experience should become standard practice by the video editors. Take note, TOH - the masses don't seem to approve of your content quality anymore!
Good thing we did not have UA-cam in the '90s ...
I think this may be the very first time in 30 years that Ive been disappointed by a TOH video. Ive been a professional asphalt contractor in the northeast for over 25 years and those 2 big potholes where the new asphalt meets the existing driveway absolutely should have been fixed while they were there. It should have been built into the price to protect the integrity of the job, even if this was donated for free. There is no way that joint will last 2 northern winters before it cracks and separates, let alone 30 years. I am definitely shaking my head on this one.
I worked for a paver for a while, and this is true. They didn't seal between the old and the new, either.
@eLad VanAllen It appears to be the neighbors driveway that the pot holes are in. Can’t just go do work on someone else’s property.

I am asphalt contractor for 40 years here in jersey too. We do it nice and clean and immaculate when completed the best never rest 😂😂😂
I agree with the edge being left for someone else to fix. Do better

If they seal it every year, it should look good. People are lazy and do it every 5 to 10 years

I was told every other year, otherwise it comes too heavy and slick when it’s wet. That happened with my last house.
Been following this advice for a while now and it’s turned out well

if its getting frequent use for doing car work with car jacks/stands, chemical spills. It won't last that long
The paving company didn't seal between the old blacktop and the new. Sealing it protects it from getting water in there that would be allowing weeds to grow in that joint.
I was gonna comment say the same thing no liquid sealer to tie them in from old to new on the asphalt
Could one do this themselves? Is any special equipment required?
Asphalt guy failed to mention how it'd hold up to car jacks, jack stands, and "mechanic work".
It holds her weight, so everything will not be a problem. 😄

As a mechanic, he needs a space to work. If he can work on a few cars, he can get money so they can move. If he works on a few BMWs, Mercedes, and Audis, they will move to a mansion in no time.

Also check that your zoning rules allow for the extra driveway considering rain water absorption.
Why did they leave those two large low spots (at 7:49) at the near end of the asphalt? Those will hold water big time.

Chicago needs that asphalt expert because the potholes here come within months of new asphalt. We don’t got 30 year asphalt.

What is a ballpark figure something like that would cost?
A lot more than simply putting in some pavers that last way longer than the asphalt.
one ton of hot top is like 150 bucks... guessing this took a few ton of binder and a couple ton of top then labor and equipment. idk 1500 bucks maybe? no expert just guessing. what's it cost for all those pavers paver boy miles?
@@timregan1005 no way this job was 1500 based on the crew size and equipment brought over. i'm guessing 5k minimum post-pandemic money. probably more like 7500.

Its maintenance is done, and a proper base when it is installed can last a long time. Never go with the cheapest contractor
@@zack9912000 well with public roads they pretty much always do, that’s why a lot of roads start to crack after 10 years.
@@miles5600 i live in the North east. Asphalt surfaces never last 10 years without cracking and potholes
@@rd-ch1on cause the contractors are very cheap to save every penny. I’ve lived in the Netherlands for many years and they even have roads that’re 30 years old and have little to no cracks or potholes, but even though the road is fine, most of them are replaced after 10 to 15 years to update the design for more safety.

Asphalt can be 100% recycled and reused. I know concrete can also be reused a little bit but not how much

@@MaxRenke that’s not what walkable means, it means that stuff is built too far apart and makes it really hard to walk anywhere useful, like most places require people to drive to the grocery store for some simple products while it would’ve been way more efficient if that person could easily walk there.
The wisest thing that should be on everyone's mind currently should be to invest in different streams of income that doesn't depend on the govt. Especially with the current economic crisis around the world. This is still a good time to invest in Gold, Silver and digital currencies (BTC,ETH...)
