UPDATE!!!! Several firmware upgrades have been issued since the making of this video and I am happy to report many of the issues I encountered have been resolved HoverAir X1 Pro and Pro Max: hamzn.to/49YpGpq
The ABSOLUTE BEST HoverAir review I've found! I just got my X1 Pro and I'm wading through the options. Now I have something to reference to! Thanks Dad!!
Hover stated on day one that the Pro & ProMax do not have forward or side obstacle avoidance. But great detailed & informative video. 👌Fyi - you can adjust flight modes, distance & height directly from the original X1 as well. It doesn't have a screen but you make those adjustments by pressing and/or holding the buttons etc.
I still have to wonder why they didn't include forward facing collision avoidance, with a camera already up there, and the camera running object tracking I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to also run some optical flow data crunching at the same time. I also found it off that rear facing obstacle avoidance isn't available in manual mode.
@@DoItYourselfDad I totally agree that with a camera up front, seems that obstacle avoidance could be implemented somehow but i'm not a techy so I really don't know how that would work. In regard to the obstacle avoidance being not available when flying manually, is that a 100% fact? I assume you tested that out off video? That seems weird & if true perhaps they can make that happen with a firmware update. My ProMax is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow so i'll be able to text some things out myself. It's been a about 3 months since I ordered so it's a long time coming. Ha ha!
They’ve been making a lot of changes in the firmware over the last couple weeks, so I imagine more things will change. I also just got notified that the audio recording to the beacon will be available in the next firmware update. We are facing obstacle avoidance is only available in some of the modes, and it doesn’t look like it’s available right now in manual mode. It would definitely be useful, because if you were flying in manual mode using the Ford facing camera to see where you’re going and had to back up, the rear facing camera would prevent you from running into stuff. All stuff that can be tweaks and firmware updates.
Enjoyed your video, I do confirm, honest and detailed, I was curious to see how you will deal with this potentially excellent drone that definitively need software updates...excellent feedback about it and very few "youtubers" are mentioning it, some want to have some buzz and having it crashed and filmed, other are hidding the issues On my opinion and if similar to 1st X1 we should have pro and pro max at its best between 1 to 3 months New suscriber ;-)
Excellent review. Full of useful information. My brother and I are looking to cut pack weight without sacrificing drone shots. Every ounce matters. We are now using a DJI Mini Pro 3 with the DJI RC. What is the weight of the beacon alone, and then the joysticks?
Sorry for the delay in reply. The weight of the beacon itself is 74.2 grams, with the joysticks the whole controller is 253 grams. You can fly with one joystick, if you go that route the total weight is 172g. Also, in case it helps, the weight of a battery is 63 grams.
It doesn't have GPS, it uses optical flow sensors on the bottom along with barometer and an IR altimeter to navigate. Hover claims 500m with the phone and 1km with the beacon, but I haven't flown out nearly that far with it.
Great review! One question I am left with: how far away from the controller (range) can it go? From the phone if you're just using the app with virtual joysticks? Oh, and also, how much wind can it resist?
You get much better range with the controller vs using the phone. 30m with the phone to 1000m with the transmitter. I haven't gotten that far out with it, the furthest I've been our is 400-500m and it worked fine.
Great video - So many are advertising and not REAL. I appreciate your diligence! QQ: With the lack of GPS it makes recovery difficult if this goes off or you loose it. Any suggestions for an Apple AirTag or GPS like solution?
It could easily lift an airtag, as I already have it lifting an RID beacon without issue. On my FPV drones I run a beeper I can activate that helps me wind it when I crash, maybe something like that could be rigged up?
Thank you so much for this review. It's fab. I've got the first model. And am considering the newer version. I did have a couple questions to ask. The Dolly track setting on mine is aborting early. For example when I set it to a 5 minute flight time, it will end at about 30 seconds regardless of the flight time I set. It's only on the dolly track setting. All the others are fine. Have you experienced that or have any suggestions for why? Lastly film grading wise have you tried any particular LUTS that you've been pleased with results wise? Would love to get your feedback. Thanks so much. Your reviews and experienced advise on your channel are amazing. Looking forward to your reply. Very best regards. Kimba
I actually have the first one as well, and I haven't experienced that issue of it aborting or ending flights that you've been experiencing. In regards to the new one, I can say I just flew it in dolly track mode for a good 5-6 minutes this last weekend on a trip and didn't have any issues. The new one does have different filtering, I've played around with them some but I've been leaving it in the standard mode and tweaking things in post afterwards.
@@DoItYourselfDad Thanks a bunch for your reply. I’ve emailed the support team regarding the aborting flights issue. But haven’t received a reply in over a week. Have you messaged them via the app or ever had communication from them via the support email or app.? Thanks a bunch.! 😊
Hello. Thank you for the vidéo. Can we update 7.2.3 the drone, without encountering any problem on the drone afterwards ? How to have sound when recording with the drone ?
I'm not sure if the X1 is the same, but the Neo sound carries over a very long distance! You may have to convert it, but I had my Neo at about 50 meters in height and about 800m distance, and I could still hear it! My friends older original Mavic was at 80 meters in height only, and it was silent. I did replace the original 3 blade stock props with 5 blade aftermarket and for sure much lower pitch, so maybe it's more quiet at longer distances now?
The X1 and this one have different size props but they both high pitch. I've noticed the smaller high pitch props sound carries a lot further than the larger props like I had on the larger (mavic) size drone. A few years ago I had replaced the props on one of my mavics with quieter props and it make a good difference. Maybe that is something to look at with these.
Sweetie & I thank you SOOOO much for this super thorough objective review. We have used and LOVED the X1 to create a drone opener four our past 100 🍺BeerVlogs 🍺. Our ProMax JUST SHIPPED moments ago. And your video re-affirms our purchase but ALSO the limitations. The SHOCKER is the forward tree crash and the COMPLETE LACK of human obstacles avoidance in manual mode. Can you ask your zero zero contacts if they have plans to stop hitting HUMANS forward & backward in manual mode. Also, as you know DJI, has a “bypass’ mode where it goes AROUND obstacles rather than just STOPPING. Can you ask them if they plan on firmware updating that? Of course, first they need to HOPEFULLY implement ANY obstacle avoidance in manual mode . Can you ask them these thins? Thanks for your insights on the Hover. Is it possible for you to try out manual flight with the beacon and joysticks with your phone as screen? I can't get that to work. Thanks in advance!
@@DoItYourselfDad Yes I have tried it several times but it doesn't work. I can only get a preview on my phone in the standaard flight modes but not in manual mode.
My iPhone 16 pro max would not work, but my Android Tripltek works -- which is actually better for visibility and control. But when connecting to smart preview, it won't do manual control; so you have to trick it by pressing RTH button and then next another button to get it into manual. Apparently ZZR is working on this.
There is no screen on the old model HoverAir X1, but you can change the settings with the buttons on the drone, no need to change settings through mobile phone app. The beacon and joysticks of new model X1 Pro / X1 Pro Max, will be able to control the old model X1 later with firmware update, but the range is not 1000meter, should be shorter.
I have the x1, while you can change the mode, you can’t change the settings within the mode like height and distance. With the x1 those settings need to be changed through the app. With this one you can make all those changes in the screen without getting out your phone.
I believe the rear sensor works up to 1 m/s, which is not very fast at all. So, no running! Sad that the very expensive X1 pro and promax do not have camera object recognition, which seems odd when other camera sensors on security cameras and even robot vacuum do. I was seriously looking at the X1 pro, but after the reviews showing this expensive drone performing no better in frontal obstacle avoidance than the very cheap Neo, and poor rear collision avoidance, I ended up getting the Neo until something better comes along, like many are expecting the Neo pro or possibly the next Mini 5 pro with similar features to the Neo but with 360-degree crash protection.
Old model HoverAir X1, there is no screen, there are 2 buttons, Big Power button and Small Mode button, you can change the settings with the buttons on the drone, no need to change settings through mobile phone app. Big Power button - Long press for power on/off, short press for takeoff Small Mode button - Short press to switch modes, long press to adjust mode parameters eg height, distance, no need to use mobile phone app to adjust mode parameters
