She was cute as hell back then. I wonder what she looks like now.
Yo tambien!
And the fact that she is sitting down and is semi calm seems strange.
Looks like princess Diana. I always wondered what she done in her spare time.
@@danielthomassladeslade7679 Lol! Really she kinda does look like her! Good catch!
How the fuck can anyone dislike this, this is literally a golden piece of musical history. Even if you don't like punk/hardcore, this is extremely important.
the mohawk guy is the living 80s big mohawk guy stereotype and he is so into it, I LOVE BAD BRAINS
It sounds like shit. Pretty easy to not like it.
@@jimmywells33Your opinion is pretty shit
This is amazing. No separation from the crowd and the audience, all the energies fused into one crazy intense explosion of music and aggression.
yeah..I don't recall stage barriers appearing at shows until......86 or 87...
it was always like that......until the new generation arrived
Finally something worth reading & remembering!
Just go to you local punk backyard shows , they still do em like this. If the crowd ain't dead
What no selfies????
Bad Brains will always be the unreachable top of the hardcore-punk movement.
Had the good fortune of opening up for these guys in 82. The most intense show ever
81-82 were their peak years IMO. Also saw them multi times in that time period
Jesus Christ HR is a monster.
I so regret being too young to have caught them live in this era. Some legendary shit.
Saw them back in 1989 at the Astoria here in London, amazing show but nowhere near the energy on display here due to size of the venue.
That's exactly how I feel. Many thanks to whoever preserved this footage.
I bet some of your parents were at this show.
I wish
LOL No. My parents weren't this cool.
Lord Destiny fuck my parents. I was there.
They Absolutely Were NOT.
Im a parent and FUCK YEA i was there 1980s
LOL at the guy who didn't know Bad Brains were black.
Just another yuppie.
Yuppie hipster Society yup 👍🏻
I was in my teens in the 80's and was big into the scene but it never occurred to me the Bad Brians was a black band. I listened to their music and it was cool but unless you saw a show or pictures in a album you might not have known. The internet was a decade off.
Stop it! You didn’t know either! Not until you watched sonic highway..... amirite?
The Bad Brains are black?
That's some hardcore skanking right there.

This is pure, distilled, punk rock. 100 degree proof. No B.S. Go H.R. go!
Such a compelling presence.

@@IronMan-uf6gj : This bands as others emerged from the Punk scene and then became their own thing.
Absolutely
Hardcore Punk
How they’re not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is beyond me.
Because hardcore bands don't make it to that place. Hell, I'm still shocked the Ramones made it.
@@voiceofreason1208 ramones not even hardcore
Because it''s BEYOND Rock & Roll.......its literally its own genre
@@albeanie7977 I think that was his point. The Ramones are about as "punk" as the HOF gets. No way a hardcore group is getting in
They got nominated in 2016. They need to be nominated again.
in early 90s, my friends and i went to see these guys play at washington square in miami ... within 5 seconds of the 1st song, we all got split up for the night cause of the insanity. and we weren't even near the front... the entire club was going crazy. EVERYONE was moshing from the stage to the very back of the club.... the energy. i have never seen anything like that before or since....
One of the greatest live experiences musically ever. It will never happen again and some of us were lucky enough to get to live it.
before they ruined south beach
Yes, the energy of a BB show was unmatched, closest I've seen would've been 1991 Fishbone.
I was 16 at this show. Wow I'm old.
I was 17 ... 2:21 standing in the far left corner wearing a plaid shirt. ha ha
Trek Fan-Gal that's awesome if you're telling the truth
it certainly looks like me and I was going to shows from '82-'84. had a lot of plaid shirts back then. :)
lol, my photo is kate bush! :)
I was 22. I miss those days terribly.
What a fucking powerful start! and I love the way H.R. dances with the mic, it's so punk!!!

Arguably one of the most underrated frontmans of all time
Far from it. Everybody copies HR
HR gets so much shit these days. Hes in his older years, he went hard for so long. He deserves to chill and take care.
not at all. everybody knows this guy is awesome.
Arguably THE greatest frontman of all time
I wish people would stop using "××× is underrated" to mean "I like this". Who exactly is HR underrated by?
Bad Brains led me to Minor Threat which led to Bad Religion which led to Fugazi and a dozen other Hardcore/Punk groups that I still listen too..
Saw Bad Brains years ago and they were insane. Like a bomb went off. Incredible band live.
I hate how all the metalheads always make fun of and complain about flailing and kicking around in the pit. That's the original way of moshing and it all started with BAD BRAINS!!
Because they're wannabe tough with only their headbanging to show for it.
Mosh pits were fantastic back then. Along came the 90's and idiots came along and ruined it. Now Mosh pits are just a bunch of dickheads looking to hurt people.
@@1974greymalkin or just walking/running in a circle. Crushed like a sandwich,, going in a circle. I despised that dancing/skanking was frowned upon in some shows. People complained if you tried to actually be creative in your movements. The raw get into the feel of the music is better. Love this. Depended on the club/venue in regards to what was allowed. Stage diving was fun at one time. Until people just parted like a opening in the sea. If the stage was high(if there was one)you'd land close to your noggin.
Mosh pit??? You're the one who sounds like some metalhead!
@@ThinkerOnTheBus Oh no, are you 14?
Dr. Know - one of the greatest and overlooked guitarists of all time. BB should have been much bigger, but alas it wasn't to be.
Their debut album which was originally released on cassette in 1982, still sounds utterly ferocious after four decades.
That is exactly how I feel. That album is my favorite hardcore record of all time. Even with the subpar production it still metls your face off, even now. They were definitely ferocious.
My God...Earle Hudson tears those drums up
Fun fact: The kid stage diving at 0:43 is Fred Armisen.
Is that true???
@@JosephHorne-f8g I swear to god it is - I remember him mentioning it in Bonus content on Portlandia IIRC - google "fred armisen bad brains" and you'll find some stuff
wow
Fred ended up in Crisis of Conformity with Dave Grohl, lol
love the girl singing every lyric in the background and how normal she looks
that's some historic music right there....Bad Brains deserve to be in the RnR Hall of Fame...people have no idea how many bands and people were influenced by them even back in 1982 when filmed.... I started seeing more and more shows at this time as well....a treasure of memories....blessings
El Leeway they are in the rock and roll hall of fame dumbass
No, theyre not.
The whole hall of fame is a hot mess. They have no idea what they are doing. So many great Rock legends who are still not inducted.
Entire harDCore scene due to Bad Brains, Clash show and Cramps show Feb 79.
Hall of Fame, my a$$... corporate junk on parade
One of thee most underrated bands of all-time.
ha
Bc they from the late 70's...plus they ripped their name off of a Ramones track too, so people did not take them seriously
Under rated!? They are one of the most well respected an imitated of all the 1st wave American hardcore bands.
These guys gave birth to Henry Rollins and Minor Threat.
Excuse the Milly, "Underrated" is their patented (vapid) word it seems.
Probably the essence of hardcore in one song. Fucking classic.
Now that it is all said and done. Bad Brains are the single greatest punk band of all time. Even greater than the Ramones and the Pistols. I have hard time saying any “punk” band is greater than the mighty Ramones but Bad Brains came up from the back and ultimately they took the Crown. They are too ferocious. Too original. Too pure. It’s almost shocking that they ever even existed at all. And yet…
Ramones were more of pop punk my guy
Rudimentary peni is better
Yep. That's pretty much how it was back in the day. Insane, dangerous, and smelly. Really smelly. Man, do I miss it now.
yea....me too.....Sitting on the edge of the stage. Jumping off the stage. Shows were fun. few if any fights, and great music. It was a scene unparalleled at the time, and unsurpassed to this day. The only thing that comes close at this point is the rap scene.
Put Bad Brains in the bleeping Rock N Roll Hall of Fame already!
Sadly, there is a criteria for the Rock & roll Hall of Fame that they don't meet. I don't think their records sales even come close enough to be considered. Still, I think they are one of the greatest bands of all time. I have a short list of "greatest bands ever" and they are near the top.
@@RumbleFish69 Their record sales dont come close because most of their albums were traded, gifted, or bootlegged. Thats how we got our music. 8th generation recordings on analog cassette tapes. Those were the days. Hardcore Punk rock then was king.
The first time I played the Rock For Light LP, I thought I had it on the wrong speed.
Love the old punk shows, where you could hear the microphone getting stomped on and thrown around! I miss that energy, and nobody was more energetic than Bad Brains!
The war against babylon is REAL,
And these boys wrote the soundtrack for it
The greatest Hardcore band to exist. Absolute wall of sound. This will never happen again, and I am glad I was born at the perfect time to grow up with this. Thank You Bad Brains. You gave me something to listen to and get inspired by at an age where nothing is more important. Y'all gave me my PMA.
Oh I hate how hardcore became the very thing it was set to destroy... good thing I can still reflect on the classics!!!
What do you mean?
Green DayPlayer94 mallcore
Ricky X Is that a thing?
This isn't hardcore tho. Its punk.
BlackTea7
Back then Hardcore was punk. The first wave was more “artistic”, the second wave was more streetwise. Some people called it Hardcore. In the UK it was called New Punk, Real Punk, then Hardcore, too. After some Hardcore bands crossed over to more metal style then the modern Hardcore was created. Bad Brains helped create East Coast hardcore
Bad Brains - это ленды мира , навечные времена. Недавно я получил посылку из Англии,с футболкой Bad Brains,в знаменитом желтом цвете. Я счастлив. 😊🎸🔥
I had no idea these guys were black. but it makes not one bit of difference. wicked
@brockjms1 - A testament to your statement is the fact that this video shows that there are asians, white, black, etc., ALL enjoying this great music together!
they are not black, they are brazilians.
voctor silva no they're Jamacians
most Brazilians are BLACK and Bad Brains are black Americans. So yes, arguably the best hardcore band ever are black. This is pretty typical-especially when whites then try to strip them of their blackness since they can't deny they're greatness.
Meursault40 but brazilians are black americans too
That guy skanking in the beginning gives me chills everytime

Guy in the dark blue shirt at :27 was feeling it!!!!!! :)
These guys are such amazing players. They became so much more than a punk or hardcore band. Many sophisticated and well played moments on I against I and The Quickness. I think HR as a melodic singer was quite underrated. Great sense of melody and tone when he wasn’t doing a more traditional hardcore voice. Dr. Know was so ahead of his time. Not sure there would be a Vernon Reid without the Doc.
This is the coolest shit I've ever witnessed!!!!
That's what we need now a days a little punk rock punks not dead
By far the best thing DC ever produced was Bad Brains. This clip proves it.
HR in full on "keep the fuck off my stage" dance mode! What a force! 10/10
Quite simply the best live band I’ve ever seen.
I was there ☠️ 🧷🧷🧷
Im digging that blonde with the curly hair.

Morganna Lefay who's that?
wasn't that Claudette sitting next to her (white jacket) ... totally bad-arse chick!
yes You knew Claudette too? and Leon, and Bubby lol
+Morganna Lefay, I used to see Claudette at shows. Remember The Ontario, D.C. Space. The Bayou? Although, those are D.C. clubs. But we used to make the trip up to NYC to see shows frequently. This is a CBGBs I think.
Leon? Very tall, thin black dude? Knew him also! Again, also here in D.C. Don't recall Bubby though. Too bad I can't find any retrospective photos. They must exist somewhere.
HR, the prototype.
Dude with the mohawk at the beginning looks just like my homie that passed away he was a punk rocker we called him Fat Greg cause he was a big boi and he looked just like that guy dancin this video always makes me think of him R.I.P Fat Greg hope your up in heaven rockin out !

so much power, so much stage persona....when he was like this he was one of the best! star faded too soon. imagine being able to still see them tour like this. I need to invent a time machine
I know dude my brother saw HR last yr thinking he would play at least some Banned In DC classics but instead it was down right terrbile he told me HR is just weak as hell now even when they play their HxCx material he only played like 3 songs and there were scene kids so movement was downright horrible too he couldn't even sing fast either I am told its depressing the integrity is gone...
No cell phones, no hype man telling fans to “fuck shit up!”. Just a great band, playing great music, with raw, organic energy. God I miss this shit 😭
So much energy its impossible to contain. One of the most exciting live bands ever!
The blue shirt guy at 2:07... is he still alive?
Just imagine being there....
My favorite live DVD that I own. Brings me back. I wish I still had my D.C/New York hard-core vinyl from the same time period. Sadly, I have the same mental issues that affected H.R. life.. Though I'm much younger. It's affected my life in a bad/challenging way. Fighting every day. Bad Brains are and always will be top to me.
Strength to you brother.
This is not a joke: I was sitting with my ex-girlfriend and showing her this. I mentioned how iconic 0:29 is with HR skanking with the mic - I'll never forget this, she said "What's so Iconic about that??"
That's when I knew it couldn't work
We are not together anymore.
In the 80s ?
just remember HR this way keep the PMA alive , it's in your hearts
HR
Man HR's skanking here is fucking phenomenal.
Who's the babe in the red flannel, my kinda girl right there!
And I'll take the Asian girl to her left. She's probably a grandmom now.
Early Bad Brains was hardcore. All the crap that has been put out in the past 30 years (from NOFX to Green Day) is shite in comparison.
Dang totally INSANE!!! I mean I look at this and see HR as a real Punk frontman full of energy, power and passion and now if you see him he is all weak and depressive looking stage presence that if he was to sing verses to any these old songs he would get a hard attack its just sad how a great band like this went south. This without a doubt is one of the most intense eras of Hardcore!!!
Corpse Desecrator some day you will get old, dumbass. And your lame statement will kick you in the balls. And it comes a lot sooner than you think, son.
Pseudo Smith on the contrary there are a lot of bands and frontmen like HR such as Wattie of The Exploited, Tony Martin of The Varukers, Anthony of Battalion Of Saints, John Joseph of Cro Mags, Kurt Brecht from DRI, Bill Milano of MOD and many more I can go on forever with the list of bands and frontmen as old as this still with a good amount of the energy they had in their prime yrs still making strong records I will admit maybe not as awesome as prime yrs so I scoff back at your ignorant statement no such thing as "getting old" I will still be a music fond person and musician in my 50s its all about devotion and passion to the music not some BS phase. So piss off. Respect my opinion and I'll respect yours.
@Corpse - HR cant help suffering from mental illness! Don't expect him to keep performing like he did just to keep people like you happy. You're ignorant to mental illness and the fact that not all people age in the same way!
Ok then you got me there I thought it had something to do with Rastafarian way of life he went on to later I wasn't aware that he had an illness and some people are unlucky then and I am aware people age different I just didn't known that was the case with him but does this argument really matter anyways now? I still like this vid and early Bad Brains so who cares no need to be a PC police.
Not being 'PC Police' just thought you should be aware. No worries all's good. There's an HR documentary coming out soon called 'Finding Joseph I' You should check it :)
Hrs hair can dance pretty well too

For everyone out there who thinks today's music "rocks," haven't heard a damn thing. THIS is a show. No backup dancers, no eye candy light show, and pure musicianship. Not once did they have to yell to the crowd, "make some noise!" And it was legendary. I doubt you'll talk about today's shit 31 years later.

Shit like this inspires me so much! I want hardcore's roots to be revived, this generation needs it. It is the pure opposite of today's manufactured crap.
Alex Rees FAAAAACTS THAT!!!
No way I'm going to "put my hands in the air, and shake 'em like I just don't care." Yecch.
