I find the show boring. They were too busy on the racism against monsters message too hard they forgot to make the show entertaining. The fights were too far & too few in between. While you felt exhausted by the message, I fell asleep. I was like "yeah, and what are you going to do about it?" They have no answer to that. Then Aoi wanted to form a terrorist organization? Like, monsters can transform into monsters with super strength, they are oppressed for plot reasons, I don't buy it. They don't need you.
I thought the Riders having 2 forms was interesting. Also they both go through a serious trauma which seems to allow them to turn into their final Hero form through the Henshin pose. Kotaro with Aoi being turned against her will into a kaijin and Nobuhiko with the death of Shunsuke. I thought that was cool. I enjoyed the season quite a bit. Nice review though!
Thank you and thanks for sharing your thoughts - I guess that would make some sense but still wished the belts were in their previous "form" to go with their base form as well. Also it would've made sensed for the henshin pose if nobuhiko got "upgraded" using the henshin pose but he got it through anger. Kinda felt like a missed opportunity to incorporate some meaning to the henshin pose
The 'monster' form is based on the original design in the manga. In the original KR Black live action series, the hopper form was also shown for a couple seconds during the first henshin, before it was transformed into the armored form.
For me, the final nail in the coffin that made me genuinely hate this spinoff was the George Floyd reference, the moment where the show threw away any remaining semblance of neutrality. I've been relying on Japanese media to get AWAY from the constant anti-white propaganda of modern American media.
Yes yes yes...finally, I found someone that said honestly about this kinda messy remake.. Many reviewers even said that this series is a masterpiece..not even nearly I think. Too many plot holes, once again, I Like a good, well-crafted, well build female character. You could see how a tragedy changes a human into a badass character, for example, Beatrix Kido from Kill Bill, that's one of example how tragedy forged a female character into something that we care about, we care about her fights. But this Aoi character was, meh..I can't find any reason why this character should add, just another mary sue character. And my biggest disappointment is the absence of a motorcycle stunt. Can you believe a Battlehopper without any single Battle? it's better for Kotaro to just use a car or public transportation rather than ride a scary motorcycle that we are now called Battlehopper. This reboot has too many convoluted characters and plots, and too much political agenda. They alter already established and good mythical stories such as Gorgom, The high priests, Creation King, etc. Even they change the philosophy of the Black Symbol, in the original series, the S and dot symbol it's a symbol of the Snake that devours a Sun, it's a Gorgom Symbol, we could see it in Bilgenia motorcycle, and in the Concept art of 87 Black, and now it's just blood with a half infinity fight whatever bla bla blah... they could make this new series grander by continuing the Mythology of Gorgom in the original series. Something that Black 87 didn't tell about this secret cult organization. More mysterious, horror, thriller action sci-fi just like Black in manga. Yeah, this series is 6/10.
I agree. I love Battlehopper. should have been a dirtbike. it's what set it apart from the previous motorcycle at the time. agile and can handle any type of terrain. Making Shadowmoon's design almost just an alternate color to Black sun's felt cheap. It was the one of the coolest costume deisng back in the day. You're modest by giving that rating. I started with 6/10 because it had it's moments too. But the last few episode just don't make good enough sense for me to care anymore and nothing was done to make up for everything they set up for in the begining. Nothing was accomplished. People would say it' about the message. Yes, but the message was there in the early episode we don't need 10 episodes of the same message and nothing resolved. Very disappointing.
Haha I'm glad I'm not the only one who shares this sentiment. Did reviewers actually call this a masterpiece? Maybe the fact they had an acclaimed director and actor attached to the project may have had some influence on the rating. This series is far from being a masterpiece, as a Kamen Rider series or even a drama series, at least in my opinion. Oh yeah let's not talk about Battle Hopper. That broke my heart to pieces. It's one thing that Battle Hopper looks the way it is on Kamen Rider Black Sun, but the way it made it to be just some scrappy motorcycle, oh my heart.............. and yeah, a Heisei themed Kamen Rider series with no bike scene... that's...... oh my heart.......
Nostalgia hits hard especially when it came to this character. I'm fine with reinvention but i agree with you, I felt they could've done something a little bit more different to the design for Shadowmoon when they're already going for the fences with Black but... we got essentially an alternate color with different leg position on the body. Hahaha the opening at the final episode probably brought a point back XD Yeah the message was constantly hammered into our brains. RACISM! RACISM! like okay, i feel you, how is Aoi and Black tackling that iss- RACISM! RACISM!
I agree to everything you said. I'm a big fan of the orginal, and I really tried to like this show considering it a celebration. But man, everything just didn't make sense. I get that they were trying to make a more grittier and more realistic version but it was just so executed poorly. The story was stronger than the original I give them that, but scenes like you mentioned felt like they were just there to make your eyes busy and not to serve the plot. I was starting to give it more merit in the the middle of the season but the story and the pacing just fell apart towards the end. The character design is not very good, nothing reminds me about the original Kamen Rider Black and Shadow moon except the colors. If anything, they look more like Kamen Rider J and Shin kamen rider had a baby. And making shadow moon almost just like a recolored skin of Black Sun feels cheap. I remember when I first saw Rider Black in the 80s and I was like, man that costume is really the coolest, and some episodes later they unleashed Shadow Moon which was probably the coolest costume design for an antagonist at the time. And lastly probably my biggest gripe about this series is Battlehopper. It should have been a dirtbike, a grasshopper motif that is agile, can jump, and handle all terrain. It's what set it apart from the previous motorcycles of the series at the time. But they made it a street bike. It was under utilized especially in battles, and In one scene you can see it was struggling for balance while Kotaro was leaving his place because he was riding it off road. And in all it's scene it was hilariously slow. I get it that they want to modernize the story so they maybe tried not to make the design too cartoonishly a grasshoper. But in a world were kaijins with poorly made costumes exist, why can't a grasshoper bike exist too. The design they made for battle hopper street bike looks like a cheap cosplay bike that you'll laugh at when you see it on the road. I wish they went for the Kamen Rider Black S.I.C. design for black sun and battle hopper if they wanted a more organic look.

Same for battle hopper.... no life, no soul, not memorable at all. I use to dream of having a bike like the original battle hopper, but with the 2022, felt like something made from scraps and it wasn't even used in battle AT ALL. Heartbreaking to see. EXTREMELY well done. Kamen Rider Black will always be my favorite Kamen Rider series and leaving it in the hands of the Japanese and not letting the USA get its grubby hands on it was the best thing they could have done. I agree to most of what u said. Too much politics, at 1 point I feel like i am watching one of those "modern day" American show. In the last episode they even do the George Floyd "i can't breathe" reference. I am speechless... Now the question is, will they continue season 2 with Aoi taking up the Black Sun mantle? Like how those Disney Marvel show which strong young female character take over like Ironheart, Kate Bishop, Thor's daughter, etc
'I agree to most of what u said. Too much politics, at 1 point I feel like i am watching one of those "modern day" American show. ' leave it to people like you for equating fighting against discrimination as being 'political'.guess your momma didnt teach you how to be a decent human being.LOL!
The show had some great moments. Kotaros first henshin was great and so was Nobuhikos. The ending really had me scratching my head and I really didn’t like it. Aoi teaching kids to make pipebombs was gnarly, but not in a good way lol. Amazons is my favorite reboot so far. Shin Kamen Rider was enjoyable as well and Black Sun isn’t terrible, but season one of Amazons is just chefs kiss
I totally agree. Shadowmoon carried this show and was arguably the best character in the series. Overall I enjoyed the show and the new take on the classic Black toku show. I was left with so many questions same as you, but I also noticed I could not help but compare the Kaijin to the Amazons from Kamen Rider Amazons lol
The one thing I disappointed about this movie is lack of action and the fight scene is too short with bad camera angle, in my opinion Kamen Rider the First, The Next and Amazon Remake have more better fight scene than Black Sun, and those movie have satisfying fight camera transition.
I agreed with everything you said. I wish they could've done a little bit more like you said especially with Bilgenia. The design, make up and like where was his shield?! Such an iconic item for this character and they just gave him the Satan Saber. Shadow Moon with out the iconic walking sound was left out. That's like a Jason Voorhees without the iconic "che-che-che-che-ah-ah-ah" sound like YOU KNOW who is coming without having to pan the camera lol. Shadow Moon doing the henshin and wearing biker gloves also didn't sit right with me but I get it, their own twist on the show and what not but it could've been done without it. Shadow Moon always gave me God like vibes and always being in his cyborg form is just so much presence. Always having me on my toes when I see him and I wish he at least had that feeling in the show when I saw him but nope. Aoi's henshin was a surprise but also not needed because it also didn't make any sense and like you said "less special". Aoi's fighting the war all the way to the end felt useless. A decent chunk of info was left out of the show and the back and forth through timeline kinda threw me at times. Which is crazy because the 1980's summed up the whole plot in like a couple of episodes and the rest was just fight after fights. The Kaijin's outfits, maybe due to budget but it was too much clothes, masks and gloves later on with the enemies which felt cheap to look at when they were on screen. Probably a few more things I wanted to say and maybe I'm just too picky but yeah. Now we need the next reboot to be ZO
Glad to hear I'm not alone in this. This could've been the next ZO series but I guess that wouldn't attract as much attention as calling it a black sun series. I'm okay with Shadow moon having a human form and a henshin pose but i wish it was silently different rather than just, the opposite direction of black's. Agree with the kaijin outfits but they gotta work with the budgets which I'm fine with, but if the the 1987 series can do better with a budget at that time? I don't think black sun had an excuse. Maybe all the money went to the actors. I felt the past storyline could've been a prequel series instead. That would've made things a lot more intriguing, interesting and will have more time to flesh everything out. Oh well...
Gonna be a hard one to pull off. I mean, Noboru Sugimura, the writer for ZO and Black series, was top tier, and Keita Amemiya, the Director for ZO and J already did a great job on those movies. Something is better left untouched-just my 2cents.
I don't really like the story. Missed opportunity to use the story from the original KR Black manga, which is amazing (a mix between paranormal investigation/mystery and action, but with coherent plot). The X-Men style human-mutant social commentary/racism is so overused. Even Kamen Rider Amazons already went that route. Black Sun's and Shadowmoon's design are great. The other kaijins? Not so much. Mostly because they wear regular clothes, probably to budget the creature makeup. Especially the boss dude (Bilgenia) with the sword, his suit is shite 😂
I think the excessive insistence about "the message" is mostly because this is an Amazon project. Had it been funded by some other company, it would've been less prominent.
And I say it's a good think Amazon is helping making this happen because the lack of creative freedom in Japan means this kind of show wouldn't get the greenlight
They need to stop involving politics in these shows. The old-school one was good vs. evil. It was simple and fun to watch. The new one has too many questions left unanswered, really nonsense trying to make it dark and serious while the cosplay was hilarious. There is so much potential they missed. I mean, even J, Shin, and ZO were better without the politics was just kicking evil’s asses.
Then just go back and watch the original? This criticism stems more from the fact it's trying something new and refreshing instead of doing the exact same thing Kamen Rider has been doing since the 70s. The same opinion can be said for Amazons 2017, and you can still enjoy the OG yet leaving the reboot alone.
Total agree, they tried to tell a complex story but it seems 10 episodes not enough, I liked the design, more gory approach of combats but the main plot leave too much plotholes to call it a good show. 1. I Agree how did Black Sun and Shadow Moon know how to henshin pose? With a super serious tone of this show the henshin pose came out of nowhere is hilarious lol. 2. Bulgenia design is really bad, why not going to more similar to the original? But changed it to dark armor with human face that I didnt noticed he was Bulgenia 1st lmao. All that armor details overshadowed with black color and blue filter tint making it looks much more goofy than it should. I cant take him seriously even when he protect Aoi fight that should be cool and heroic. 3. The budget is amazing, camera works, people, settings, and effect clearly benefited. But its doesnt translate well to the Creation King, later episodes, and other kaijins especially the bird kid that look like the animal mask we see often on halloween costumes. While the bug persons and main characters kaijin design looks good (except bulgenia). Why not make all of them insect, their insect kaijin design is much cooler and have more effort than other animal kind really. 4. The Bike should same caferacer/trail bike as original. Shadowmoon using the scrambler is ok but Black Sun should be using the original bike. Also sadly its not sentient my favorite thing. Maybe its too goofy idk lol. 5. The origins story of Golgom being anti racism movement that get corrupted by government is interesting twist. But executed poorly since why Kaijin that obviously stronger than human generally need to bend down to human isnt clear. I mean if one kaijin enough to murders a lot of peoples they should be easy to do. And according to lore they fight it from 1970s and there's still kaijin evil enough to kill people by human orders is ironic. Why not have few people on politics and cops also kaijin too to make it worked but not perfectly. Could create more interesting dynamic. 6. Aoi the main girl, while I know she should be a good human fight for kaijin, like Hive said she turned to terrorist/guerilla in the end and her kaijin henshin looks terrible really. Why they not make her an actual rider is weird since more man-made kaijin have humanoid looks. Why she isnt turned into rider but a goofy discount Baltan from utlra series lol. But her CGI attack when crawling on walls is ok. Also her speaking english part for a long part I'm sorry but its too long and cringe. 7. So the Black Rider logo came from Aoi and she used it for the new Kaijin movement logo. And it came from nowhere and dont have real meaning. They have chance to make some backstory of Aoi about this logo but no explanations. 8. The creation king thing, Why Shadow Moon not jsut make all kaijins revolt against human and wage war to government instead want to rendered vegetative state like the shadow king is pretty weird. Even without the heaven jelly, they can turn around the humans eventually since they are much stronger than human. Im kinda disappointed we dont see full riot between human and kaijin and Aoi came to stop them between and reveal the truth rather than long ass zoom meetings that somehow some people on the world watched it. Also its more impactful if everyone on news of riot in Japan to world know about the truth. If no one really see the broadcast, people who dont give a shit about it since start wont know the truth no? Like small civil wars, Famine, etc. some people wont know what happen to the world if they dont search it. But if its a big blown out war her message can be delivered quicker. 9. I also agree Shadow Moon is more interesting than Black Sun here. Kotaro Minami of this version is too depressed old man with sadly have not really interesting personality. Even in Flashback shadowmoon get the girl also. He's definitely more interesting character here. 10. While you said its weird having 2 form of riders. I liked it here but its not explained really. I really thought the Kingstone really explored more. And any kaijin/man made kaijin able to transform to rider form bcs of the stone and completely get rid of heaven need. It could be more deeper but its the sidequest. 11. Sad its just 10 episode really, its seems they have much more story going on that need more episode. But maybe the budget isnt enough. They need 24 episode so we can explore the Golgom origins, kaijin racism and why they bend to human rules, kingstone, king of creations, and finally rider form of kaijin. So many things to explains. 12. But hoping for season 2 or any kind of sequels, they killed both of the main riders. And leaving only Aoi that stayed alive. And tbh her lore isnt that interesting to be any main characters. Unless they reintroduced new main characters and fill these plotholes. Well again its done. 13. Also the racism storyline definitely came from Amazon. USA/Hollywood influence clearly shown lol. Its almost overshadow any other storyline. It's a real issue but its smearing over the kamen rider black tributes for me. Glad at least in final episode they recreate the intro. 14. The Last thing is, the original kamen rider black is the hero for people. But here, kamen rider black is unsung hero but with no impact to other people who dont know him whatsoever. Aoi is the hero. Again this is so modern Hollywood strong female lead style lmao. Really they can explore much more, or maybe not taking too many complex story they can shed a really good serious kamen rider story. But they doing this is pretty ballsy moves, but overall aside from story, its a refreshing takes on kamen rider series that usually close with plastic toys and kids. But is this show truly successor or remake of original Black/Black RX? No. I hoped one day if they tried to make adult oriented series again they dont choose over complicated story and richer characters. Aside of it this maybe the close to coolest up to hollywood quality attempt of kamen rider show.
I agreed about the creation king patting his head, its kinda not make sense for me, the creation king is from the victim of the world war right? And he kinda angry and mad in the flashback but why suddenly hes like love kotaro lol, Idk maybe char development for creation king lol, But for me this show is banger lol i love it , cant wait more old kr remake
Hey at least the suits and driver look cool. Oh yeah Shadow Moon, he's the best part alongside his soundtrack. I miss the eldritch feel of the original though. Like, Gorgom original was something out of a Contra or Metal Slug game.
I liked the Black and RX TV series even though Black was only showed on TV while I had to watch RX from VHS rental stores that has English subtitles (from my country). This entry though. Doesn't make any sense.
As a newcomer to the series, I quite liked it personally. The only problem I have is with Aoi's ending, at least with the bombs and shit although the rest was fine. Also, in regard to Kotaro being a side character I was okay with it because of the flash backs.
That's the point, the Black Sun political activist was revived and won't stand idly by passively protesting a regime that are basically oppressors in their home
I really liked Black Sun.

leave it to people like you for equating fighting against discrimination as being 'political'.guess your momma didnt teach you how to be a decent human being.LOL!
It felt more like X men Story than the classical Kamen Rider Black storyline from the manga and the 1987 series...
When you remember that the original Kamen Rider Black actually does focus on politics.
If they do a season 2, I hope they’ll have more action scenes!
Black Sun RX would be hilarious.
I had high hopes but I was sorely disappointed after watching this.
I hope decade destroys this ar world of black sun
Too bad Ohma has put him in hibernation in their last meeting
The King Stone Brought him back as Kamen Rider Black RX so i think they will bring him back in this new version
I agreed about the creation king patting his head, its kinda not make sense for me, the creation king is from the victim of the world war right? And he kinda angry and mad in the flashback but why suddenly hes like love kotaro lol,
Idk maybe char development for creation king lol,
But for me this show is banger lol i love it , cant wait more old kr remake
Hey at least the suits and driver look cool. Oh yeah Shadow Moon, he's the best part alongside his soundtrack.
I miss the eldritch feel of the original though. Like, Gorgom original was something out of a Contra or Metal Slug game.
What was the point ?
No point at all
Do they ever tell us how they got the drivers? They just come out of nowhere and only 3 have them
I liked the Black and RX TV series even though Black was only showed on TV while I had to watch RX from VHS rental stores that has English subtitles (from my country). This entry though. Doesn't make any sense.
I couldn't follow the damn story!
Don't think you're the only one there
Kamen rider zo did it better
Kamen Rider ZO is legit a masterpiece. I watched it for the first time last month and it got me obsessed with Kamen Rider lol
I just like the Bike
bro bilgenia costum design + the actor looks, no offense. JUST REALLY REALLY BAD. kinda take me off from the show man.
i agree. its a good show, but the 10 episodes was too little. had they had more episodes the story would have been better
I kinda expect a season 2 would take elements from black rx and aoi would take kotaro role and have a black rx inspired upgraded to her kaijin form
I hope so, but I'm curious how they're going to continue the plot line with Aoi as the protagonist when Aoi is now a terrorist, sorta.
@@tokusatsuhive3254 She's recruiting CHILD SOLDIERS! There is no 'sorta' about her being a terrorist.
Just straight up revive Kotaro and say that his belt evolved into the Sunriser.
