My understanding is that a bullet to the brain causes instant and painless death. Can someone explain why we moved away from that? Electrocution and lethal injection seem to be needlessly complicated, expensive, prone to mistakes, and significantly more barbaric. In any case, 10 years seems way too lenient.
As a rape victim myself knowing what she went through and thinking she had gotten away and survived, then to have it happen again. I can't even imagine what that must be like and how it affects her long term. Everyone talks to us about the fact that it gets better, that we're survivors. But very few people talk about the things that never leave us. Most people don't want to hear it. They don't want to hear or talk about the fact that some of the damage is permanent. Success stories get all the press coverage. Women and men who don't handle it well even get criticized for not taking advantage of help and resources. Implying that those things always work and therefore they must not be using them correctly. And for those unlucky enough to never achieve some degree of normalcy, they get forgotten and moved on from. Care providers and supporters like results. They like knowing there's an end point where in their minds they can say you're good as new, you're a survivor. I hope she has people who never move on no matter what. I hope she finds the strength to fight. I hope she finds a new normal that allows the good patches to outweigh the bad ones.
I hate the term "survivor" because it's offensive to actual murder victims and other people who have died in horrific ways. Rape doesn't kill the victim. Yes, some rapists do kill their victims afterward, but most of the time they don't. It's not "surviving" if there wasn't an actual risk of death.

Something as simple as a punch to the head hard enough can kill a person. Any use of force can end in death. So there's always a risk of death. When we wake up tomorrow we will have all survived another day despite there being for most of us no risk of death between now and then. I dislike the term survivor personally when used to describe us. But not because it isn't correct. I dislike it because people use it when speaking about rape victims like it's a synonym for cured. And there is no cure. Some of us just find a way to get used to it and carry on.

Well, when I was a police officer we had a male officer start dating a rape victim. He was the officer who was dispatched and investigated her case. Small department so cops did their own investigations, no detectives. That re-traumatized her because he had a live-in girlfriend, with no intention of leaving her.

@amark350 She was raped by a different man earlier in the day off Duvall Street. This second man came along pretending to be a good samaritan who would take her to a hospital I guess. Instead, he took her to this second location and put her through another rape. Both men have been caught.
Unless he bonded out, which he probably didn't, he sat in the county jail those two years, which is worse than prison, so in a sense it was harder for him than if he was found guilty and sentenced right away. Hopefully this is some consolation when seeing people drag out court cases over long periods of time.
Well bc it’s takes time to work it’s way through the overburdened system. This is what happens in a country that has by far the highest incarceration rates in the entire world, well more than China and India combined, 25% of the worlds incarcerated and only 5% of its population. Prosecutors and defense attorneys need time to prepare, the court needs court reporters and it’s a career with an aging population retiring out.
We as women should always have protection on us, rather it be a gun, pepper spray, and take a defense class in order to know what to do just in case something like this occurs.

I saw a story on that show "I should not be alive." A young girl, I want to say in Philadelphia was walking home at night, and then was taken and raped. The guy threw her back out in the street when he was done with her. She made it a block down the road and a completely different man did the same thing, but he tried to murder her afterwards, and she escaped him. The evil in this World is unimaginable. Edit: The show was called " I survived" and the town was in New Orleans. It had been about 5 years since I seen it, but someone was able to pinpoint the show and episode I was referring too.

As a rape victim myself knowing what she went through and thinking she had gotten away and survived, then to have it happen again. I can't even imagine what that must be like and how it affects her long term. Everyone talks to us about the fact that it gets better, that we're survivors. But very few people talk about the things that never leave us. Most people don't want to hear it. They don't want to hear or talk about the fact that some of the damage is permanent. Success stories get all the press coverage. Women and men who don't handle it well even get criticized for not taking advantage of help and resources. Implying that those things always work and therefore they must not be using them correctly. And for those unlucky enough to never achieve some degree of normalcy, they get forgotten and moved on from. Care providers and supporters like results. They like knowing there's an end point where in their minds they can say you're good as new, you're a survivor. I hope she has people who never move on no matter what. I hope she finds the strength to fight. I hope she finds a new normal that allows the good patches to outweigh the bad ones.

Well, when I was a police officer we had a male officer start dating a rape victim. He was the officer who was dispatched and investigated her case. Unless he bonded out, which he probably didn't, he sat in the county jail those two years, which is worse than prison, so in a sense it was harder for him than if he was found guilty and sentenced right away. This is what happens in a country that has by far the highest incarceration rates in the entire world, well more than China and India combined, 25% of the worlds incarcerated and only 5% of its population. Prosecutors and defense attorneys need time to prepare, the court needs court reporters and it’s a career with an aging population retiring out.
We as women should always have protection on us, rather it be a gun, pepper spray, and take a defense class in order to know what to do just in case something like this occurs.

You know, this isn't just about protecting society, it's also about he sense of justice. When you do something like this, people demand a harsh punishment. If imprisonment is the best we have, then we should at least castrate these rapists as well.

At a certain point, you can't actually get revenge for the amount of harm 1 person can do. There is no need to go beyond locking people up in a developed society.

It's my opinion that rape is worse than homicide. The victim of a homicide is gone and beyond the pain of the incident, the victim of a rape lives with that for the rest of their lives.

I just can't understand why it takes two years to convict a man who was literally caught on camera, and why said man was given the chance of release after just five years in prison. That man saw a woman in distress, decided to rape her himself, and had the self-awareness to try and conceal the evidence afterwards. There is not the remotest possibility of him ever being safe to re-enter society.
Yeah, the fact he knew she'd already been victimized and then decided to victimize her again is truly heinous and demonstrates an especially vile mind. The sentence doesn't seem harsh enough at all.
It took 2 years because they had to try to identify him through a poor-quality video and then try to locate him afterward. There are TONS of crimes caught on camera, and many with far clearer images, and yet the criminals are never identified.

Florida didn't outlaw all abortion and I'm pretty sure this woman, if she actually did get pregnant, wouldn't need 6 weeks to decide whether or not to end it. In fact, a nurse likely gave her something that very same night when she was being checked out at the hospital.
