    They do have a swim bladder. The internet is full of information and much of it is wrong.

      Interesting. They just choose to keep it deflated?

    • @worddunlap
      @worddunlap Рік тому +1

      @@MattKeepsFish Swim bladder infections kill them, it is a common thing. Also the Kuhlis bladder is believed to act as a makeshift lung. I've read that anatomically their swim bladder has 2 distinct sections. Front and back?

      I have no idea if it inflates or not. For one of the classic aquarium fish there isn't much detailed info. The info is slow to come.

      @@worddunlap Indeed. It does help to explain their corydoras-habit of surface breathing though. Thanks for bringing this to light.

    I have a dozen in a 40 breeder. There's a chunk of driftwood in there with a hole in it and they all squeeze in there. Soon as food gets dropped in they pour out like a clown car.

      @@MattKeepsFish Sometime when I remember to. Now that I got rid of the rosy minnows I had in there and planted it they don't hide as much anymore. I see them out just before the lights go off squiggling around in the tank, top to bottom and all along the surface

    • @receiving9067
      @receiving9067 Рік тому

      @@MattKeepsFish I think prior they hid alot because I had some rosy minnows in there and found they were beating up the shrimp and the angelfish (only babies at the time). Once I pulled them out and got rid of them the tank is a lot calmer. Watching the loaches yesterday they don't even try to hide anymore. A group of them likes to hang out behind some drift wood in the corner where the filter outflow current is because it washes food back to them and the rest kind of just wriggle into the plants and chill

    I got the last 2 black kuhli loaches at my local petco last week and I checked in today and bought all 6 banded ones they got in since and I'm so happy that I have them. And you recommended at least 6 per 10 gallons? My man!!! I really didn't need an excuse to get more but having that good reason handy for explaining to my girlfriend that i bought more fish

    Got 3 young khulis in my 10 gallon (everyone is being moved to a planted 20 gal as soon as its cycled) and for a fish with a reputation for being shy and nocturnal they sure are out and about in plain sight during the day a lot! Theyre not even scared of the huge betta fish and mystery snail roomies. They move around in a pack all the time, following each other nose-to-tail or literally slithering on top of each other

    • @MattKeepsFish
      @MattKeepsFish  2 роки тому +1

      Aren’t they great? I’m wondering if their behaviour depends on the water parameters. Doing water changes just seems to energize them!

    • @worddunlap
      @worddunlap Рік тому

      @@MattKeepsFish I think perhaps the change in water makes them want to try to swim 'upstream'. I've kept them on and off since 1967 and they all displayed the behavior at times. You'd think having kept them since 1967 I'd know a lot about them but the data is lacking. I have doubts anyone does.

    I got 8 them like a week ago but they always hiding. Near some rock,plant and below filter. Only 2-3 of them actualy active out in the aquarium. I keep them with yoyo loaches. Is that hiding behaviour normal? I dont want to stress them out that make them constantly in hiding mode. Should i move my yoyos

    • @MattKeepsFish
      @MattKeepsFish  2 роки тому

      Hey, I’ve had them with active fish also, and while some tankmates can be an issue for kuhlis, I’ve found that the most key issue is the amount of lighting and cover. If you want to see them all the time, try building a cave by the side glass that shades them from the light

      @@MattKeepsFish I have no details to give. I never intended to even try to breed. I initially bought three random loaches for my 55 gallon planted tank. As far as my loach is being out day and night it’s probably due to the fact that they feel secure. There’s plenty of hiding spaces it’s planted and I have shrimp and community fish and there with them.

      @MattKeepsFish A couple more won't hurt😁 Question for you. Have you ever had your loaches breed? I've kept them for 20 years now an never had them breed.

    • @MattKeepsFish
      @MattKeepsFish  9 місяців тому

      @@onehitterquitter2130 Nope, never. They may breed, but the eggs are likely eaten soon after. I’ve heard that the best thing you can do is plant extremely dense.
      Essentially, the best way to breed them is to have an aquarium where you’ll never see them!
