Welcome to MattKeepsFish!
I made this channel for two reasons: show off my fish and describe what it’s really like to keep them.
When I created my first aquarium I struggled to find the kind of content that I needed most, so I started making it!
My videos are informative, visual-heavy, and meant to offer a window into the many pros and cons of owning an aquarium.
Please leave comments!
Part of my goal in making this channel is to create a dynamic resource for people like us; I will always respond to questions - no matter how old the video is (unless they're abusive... then I make them disappear 😁).

I haven't changed mine for years at a time.
Rams!!!
You want MORE rams?!?! 😂 A colony would be kinda epic tho.
I rinse mine out and reuse them.past the required time to change them as there so pricey out here to even buy a 6 pack or 12 pack package of 6 is $17.99 to $ 19.99 and 12pkg is $29.99 and depending on the filter they're even more .
Beneficial bacteria is on everything including in the filter!
Indeed!

Shellies!
Thank you! I’ve been telling my gma for awhile now. I’m going to show her this and maybe she’ll listen.
Bro how to get rid of diatoms
Good video idea. Here’s the skinny: Dodge it by starting aquariums with low light, and adding plants that’ll outcompete diatoms. If it’s already overwhelming, a single Ramshorn snail has done the trick for me. But algae eating fish work too. To maintain: remove plant decay, go easy on the fertilizer, and lower lighting until things are under control. Slowly raise the lighting in the weeks following to see how far you can go before the algae comes back.
Paradise fish community tank?
Dang man, I like it. Ever tried it before?
@MattKeepsFish nope! Just got a female paradise today :] hope it'll work out since almost all the fish I have are big ones (mascara barbs, odessa barbs, denison barbs, golden killifish, a chonky siamese algae eater, channa andrao and a yellowtail spiny eel)! I've kept the paradise fish in a breeder box for now and even though she's small she's got quite the attitude! Doesn't even flinch and even inspects fish that do end up looking at the breeder box
Amazing! Keep a close eye for the first little bit though. I’ve had them pull scales off my other fish when I kept one previously. At the same time, I’ve also encountered very docile individuals :)
@@MattKeepsFish oh what??? Thanks for the warning! I'll keep that in mind
The reason the all in one cartriges say to change them monthly is the carbon. Activated carbon isnt any good for longer than a month. That said I've always advised people who do have all in one cartriges to not change them and just go without the carbon filtration because of how bad throwing out that bacteria colony is. Always use a filter with separate mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration
Absolutely. It’s bad design by design. Shorter lifetime means spending more money on products!
I don't do water changes in my aquariums. I haven't done any water changes for a year now, with no issues. I follow The Father Fish method. My five aquariums are completely all natural!
Couple things I didn't mention, I also added some wet leaves from a creek or pond or stream! The second thing is to set up a couple of glass gallon jars and grab some creek or pond or stream water with some wet leaves from there to start your resurrection jars for your food web. You would add these things and some of the water as well a little at a time, every couple of weeks or so. For the water, stir your jars a little and use a turkey baster. You want to bring in as much biodiversity as possible in your aquariums! When you do that, you'll be amazed how healthy and happy your fish will be. Also, you need to collect some dried leaves and twigs to replenish your jars as needed. To replenish the water, you can use spring water, aquarium water, or some of your filter water when you clean your filter media or collect some more creek water. Don't use tap water if your water has chlorine or chloramines in it. It will kill all the biologicals.
An informative and funny video lol, I regret not watching this earlier
Thanks! Perhaps I’ll repost it.
@@MattKeepsFish PLEASE DO! there's NO reason to leave out this much effort, I'm gonna show this to my mom since she hates reptiles and I hope this atleast helps a bit lol
Awesome! 😂
It’s not a scam the bacteria grows on the bio wheel or whatever other insert your filter has
Top Fin filters only have 1 insert (technically), and I believe the bio wheel on marineland filters says to replace monthly. The scam is that they do not need to be replaced monthly, as their main purpose is to house bacteria, and the bacteria would be lost upon disposing of the insert.
My biomedia hasn’t been cleaned or replaced in over 10 years
Thanks for the tip. How long can you keep washing and re-using a sponge filter for? There must be a point when you have to buy a new one
There is. The sponge may start to break down, or be unable to take its intended shape again after being compressed. At this point it would make sense to replace because it would otherwise eject plastic particles into the water, or be unable to properly pass water through its pores.
@ thanks, I’m new to this! Well I had goldfish as a child about 30 years ago, but now my daughter wanted a pet, so we thought fish would be the easiest pet for her, i slowly realised that wasn’t the case 😂 it’s ok though, the fish we’ve got only have a lifespan of 3 years apparently, so if she gets bored, it’s not too long for me and the wife to be looking after them! 😅 EDITED to add, actually there’s something quite relaxing about watching fish swimming around merrily in the tank! Plus the water was cloudy for about a week, and I thought I would have to buy something to clear it up, but it cleared up by itself, which is nice. 😁
Very nice :) I’m glad you’re enjoying it
You most likely have to change out the filter media at some point but probably not all at once. It might take years tho
Who throws out bio media unless it’s falling apart? If you do, you’re doing it wrong.
So would a school of emerald adult Corys not be good with one?
I didn’t have problems between him and any catfish, so you may be okay with that one. Here he is housed with glass and twig catfish.
Kind of rad not gonna lie
Majority of those have carbon in them and they get saturated after a month, ask any marine hobbyist
This is true. The rub is that you’re also disposing of the floss.
This needs to be said more often.
I accidentally replaced my filter cuz it was all black and i added new ones, my tank is only 1 week old. I hope my fish wont suffer 😢
Feed very lightly and test water weekly if you can. Hoping your fish do ok 🙏
Lots of plans is what I have, I watched another channel he use small gardening pots to make caves, use the method to make caves for each female I have
I live in Canada. Why is medication illegal in canada? Where did you order the med from?
Most hard meds for fish are illegal because of our strict laws on invasive species, environment protection, etc. The internet says it’s because they’re untested, but I think the real reason is that they’re worried treated fish will be released into the wild and take over. In case you didn’t know, they’ve also banned more species for us, including all mosquito fish and salvinia. Annoying, because neither would survive our winters. I ordered on Amazon. 50/50 it arrives or it gets stopped at the border.
Just clean the sponges with the same aquarium water and put it back in it doesn’t need to be replaced unless it’s damaged lol
Sponge filter 👍
Great advice
Im on a year now with the same ceramic rig and sponges I just change my floss when I feel the need
If I don’t have a quarantine tank should I just remove all the substrate in the display tank and treat it with the medication? Thanks.
Do your fish have Camallanus? If so, then yes. It will make it much more difficult to remove the worms if they’re under a layer of substrate. Don’t forget to remove the chemical filtration as well!
@@MattKeepsFish yes one of my guppies has it, not sure about the other one. He keeps getting close to him so I wouldn’t be surprised. We have a small temp housing box for them but we were trying to decide if we should just leave them in the tank and just remove all the gravel or move them to the temporary tank. We tried API general cure which I read won’t work. We are waiting on another product to try which has good reviews. I removed the carbon out of the filter while the general cure is in the tank and hopefully all this can go away before the fish dies. Thanks for the video I will try it out this week.
Lmk if you need to talk anything else through
@ unfortunately things have taken a bad turn since we couldn’t get the medication delivered in time, he can’t even stay upright anymore so we moved him to a temp tank since it seems like he doesn’t have much time left and I don’t want the worms to spread anywhere else. At least we will have the medication for next time.🥲
I’m very sorry to hear that. These are, unfortunately, the things we remember best for future projects. I would still encourage you to monitor your other fish closely for signs of infestation. How many others was your guppy with?
And I don't use carbon anymore he sponges and shit themselves keep my tanks pretty clean they just have a fishy smell at least it's not rotten eggs tho
Never ever change them unless there falling apart first cuz if there falling apart then they will cause problems like gunning up the filter and making it cut out then u change them but I had filters last 6 months
Yea u rinse them out every few monthes unless the stuff is falling apart then u get rid of it cuz by then there enough beneficial bacteria in the tank itself to hold the tank together and u use tank water to rinse them so ur not using tap water and killing good bacteria cuz chlorine in tap water will kill bacteria as well
You don’t look high bro, you got them world war z zombie eyes!
😂😂😂
This kinda blew up
Hey Matt, just had ya pop up on my feed. Hope ur doing well come by CJ soon😆 -Ryan from CJ
Oh no way! Hey man! I’m doing alright. I’d love to come in soon and hangout, maybe even make a video :D

Absolutely.
