    The ember tetra is one that I am considering for my tank. Deciding on 2 water column species, one being the green neon tetra. I'm wanting a red/orange fish too, something that doesn't blend in with the green plants. Tank is 150 gallon planted tank. Pelvicachromis kribensis moliwe on the bottom, pseudomugil luminatus and then thinking the green neons. Trying to decide on ember tetra or espei rasbora. Do you have anything else that you'd recommend besides the ember or espei? I'm planning to do large groups of each, 50+

    We had 6 in our tank alongside a few different species of tetra. Unfortunately 4 of them have died, possibly due to an ammonia spike that killed a few other fish in the tank. In our experience they are quite gregarious and often playfully swim to the top of the tank at night etc.

    Honestly I've used them white filter cartridges and they are just trash seems they start to go into little pieces and into my tank, so I only use bio media and filter pads now but only ever rinse in tank water once a year and a water change every 6 months and have 50+ odd tanks and everything thrives and breeds, so there's not really any reason to go thru so much padding etc

    • @MattKeepsFish
      @MattKeepsFish 13 днів тому

      @@HighkeyLazy I would suggest constant water flow, but you don’t need an air pump or anything like that. Any filter would be just fine. Beyond that, you won’t need tech like a heater or light (provided that your room temperature is within their comfortable range). You can see the video linked in the description to see the density of plants needed to provide proper oxygen.

    Ok now i know that when i do a vacuum of the bottom of my tank to rinse the filter in tht water. Well after all yhe yucky is at the bottom of the bucket. I just got a Betta and want to keep him a happy boy. I have only so far had to clean the bottom 2x cuz learning how much to feed him and not have food rot. I did look up how to care for him. I have lots of plants and a few bottom feeders to help keep things good. I might get another snail.

    I haven aquariums more than 20 years, what i always tell, when you clean the filters. Do it only with water from the aquarium, let that dirty water to for some minutes to stay, and then when the dirt is separated on the bottom, put the water back on the aquarium, it is full of beneficial bacteria.

    Hello from my fish room channel in Chicago, where I am a subscriber to yours. It is most disheartening (and morbidly interesting) that on top of the sick fish all of your effort, time and resources yielded results that are at best inconclusive. It begs so many questions, one of which is "doing nothing" a better approach than all the work and cost it takes to treat? I often just up the water change, feed less and, if necessary, cull. The mysterious ailment goes away as often as not.

    • @MattKeepsFish
      @MattKeepsFish 20 днів тому

      @@LushSaltyAquariums Hello from Ontario! Fishkeeping really is unique in how it disregards disease, and I suppose that it’s just because of how cheap a replacement is in comparison to treatment. I guess I’m prompted to keep digging into research because I find it interesting to explore undiscovered avenues, but I also really do get attached to my fish and want them to be healthy if it is at all in my power. An ember tetra is sick? I may try medicating, but their lives are already so short that I often just see if it worsens or not - and sometimes they live for years more! Now if it’s a sick twig catfish, Bolivian ram, or something similar I’m taking it seriously. Such fish are rare, expensive, long-lived or extremely personable and complex in their personalities; losing fish like these would be like losing a dog or a cat for me, and their maintained health is the core reason for my research.
