Welcome to MattKeepsFish!
I made this channel for two reasons: show off my fish and describe what it’s really like to keep them.
When I created my first aquarium I struggled to find the kind of content that I needed most, so I started making it!
My videos are informative, visual-heavy, and meant to offer a window into the many pros and cons of owning an aquarium.
Please leave comments!
Part of my goal in making this channel is to create a dynamic resource for people like us; I will always respond to questions - no matter how old the video is (unless they're abusive... then I make them disappear 😁).

I have a perfect ecosystem I don't use none of that junk I use real systems bro
I use 85 heat deep subtrate with sand cap and whole tank of plants and light sponge filter is a good source but you don't really need it I run 2 but I have never cleaned them in over a yr they still look black and brand new why cause I don't foul my environment out with excess buildup filters should only by purifying water if it is collecting material onit means you are fouling that system out bad
Your CPD's look absolutely amazing.
Thank you! 😄
Canada sounds stupid on the anti fish meds rule literally for no reason nobodys doing drugs on fisb meds prime e.g of the pigs in power.
Aquarium filter deep state hit men are coming for you
How of them do you change the water
I change the water by pouring the old into the terrarium and refilling from my misting bottle.
@MattKeepsFish sorry. How often*
Not that often really. In fact, I only ever changed it when I wanted to offload some springtails. Try once a month, and feed only when the previous rice grains are completely consumed.
I will have a small school of this beauty in couple of weeks when my tank become stable) The hardest time, waiting... xD
It will be worth it!
whats the little plastic did you used on the sides of the glass?
These attachments come with the previous “Top Fin” glass lids. They’re useless as-is, but you can cut and use them like I did here!
@@MattKeepsFish ah thanks dude!
What kind of gourami is that?
Honey Gourami!
Huh
Thanks!
Planning a heavy planted nano 20g cpds is one option. Great info video. Thanks you. Subbed. Greetings from NY at my channel @joy of fish keeping. youtube.com/@josepolanco1228?si=k0zTJc_fNNhkOocB
It does have tannins, but I wouldn't call it a blackwater tank really. You'd see it isn't blackwater if the background wasn't black.
Yeah true. This is more of a brownwater tank 😂 Blackwater just requires more tannins then?
Ecologically, black water requires more than just tannin-tinted water. Best I can do is a "black water-inspired scape". I don't have a source of water for it since our waters are HARD, high tds and alkaline.
So it’s the ph that needs to be dropped in addition to high tannins?
Blackwater tanks are underrated
Yeah, basically you only need to change a carbon filter that often. Ceramic filters and sponge can be used for years!
I figured that out way back in the 80s. It’s a scam in that they want you to buy those filters to make more money. Trust me, you’ll know when the throw away the filter and get a new one.
That's why there's another reason aquaclear filters are superior. No cartridges.
Indeed! Although I still had many customers who would throw away the sponges monthly 😬
Yerp sounds about right

Everyone asks me how I keep my aquariums and ponds clean without breaking the bank or my back, I just tell them I'm lazy but really it's just keeping a full cycle eco system and enjoying your build.
I got my 75g and stand at petsmart last year at Christmas for $325 total with the sale prices, just saw a 75g marineland there last week for $109

I have kuhli loaches, they are fast eater and not shy, so how can I feed them
@@abhijatsinghshakya1399 Definitely not as shy as these! What other animals do you have in the tank?
@@MattKeepsFish just kuhlis 8 and 1 betta
@@abhijatsinghshakya1399 You could bury bloodworms just enough so that the betta couldn’t see them and the kuhlis coould dig them up. You could also use “Omega One” catfish pellets, which are larger and can be picked at over time. Those are my top recommendations, but many combinations could work for your setup.
@@MattKeepsFish oooh will try, thanks a lot sir
@@MattKeepsFish bought 8 anchor catfish, I thought they were shy, but they are roaming around tank even when lights on
Hella unique fish
I never do until they fall completely apart, all I do is clean in hot water it will also help reactivate the charcoal

Hello how do I know if I have worms In the tank? I seen to red worms on top of my aquarium glass lids
@@ineshianewton7740 These worms never leave the aquarium. They live in the substrate when they haven’t infested a fish yet. You’ll know if a fish has them when the fish refuses to eat, is eating but not gaining weight, or you can see the worms coming out of the fish’s anus or just beneath the skin. Another sign is if your fish is producing empty (clear or white) waste, but this can also be due to constipation or other digestion issues. I medicate all of my fish preventatively. It is expensive, but it only takes one Camallanus worm to shut down your tank for good.
@MattKeepsFish ok thank you..im scared I don't know what those 2 red worms were. I have plants growing out of the tank I went to clean it ..I lift the leaves up and they were there on top of the glass..how did they get there
@MattKeepsFish ok so those wasn't the worms you speak of in the video ? Because they were literally sitting outside the tank on top of glass lid! Just want to be sure I don't want to do a treatment .if i dont have to.I have chiclids and they have been producing frys...I don't want to hurt them! Do you think I should treat on the side of precaution? And if I did would it hurt the babies?
@@ineshianewton7740 Expel-P is a fairly gentle medication, so I don’t think it would hurt your fry. It can be expensive though, and illegal in some places. Do you have a picture or video of the worms? Keep a close eye on your fish. If they are eating well and producing healthy waste, then it may be another type of worm, or even a leech.
@MattKeepsFish ok and I killed them.put you in the mind of a outside garden worm. But brown red color the large one..and small one looked almost like a red maggot
Thanks!
Thank you!
Why he kinda...
Just remember, if you are using carbon, you still change it.

Why is every other person on UA-cam always talking about quarantining fish where are you people getting fish from it doesn't make sense it's just something people do to follow everybody on UA-cam now if you have a fish shop or your a fish breeder that makes sense I understand but the average person you guys need to try things for yourself and quit following everybody on UA-cam I've been doing this 40 years and never bought a sick fish I'm not going to buy a fish that I think is sick and have to put in another tank for 2 months that is ridiculous
@@gilesh1260 I appreciate you telling your side. Thank you. At this point, I was doing exactly what you said: following the crowd, doing what everyone else says to do. I would often break this rule, thinking that the fish looked healthy enough. Never had a problem. That is, until about 2 years ago. My 40G was thriving: a dozen species, planted, everything I could want, but I wanted a little more. I bought 4 bolivian rams, all active, colourful, and eating well. A great species that I still keep now. Soon after, everything began to die, and within 2 weeks, every fish and invertebrate had died. To what? A parasitic nematode. Camallanus worms. They sat in the gut of my rams for weeks before decreasing their appetite, and then the young would drop out of their anuses into the gravel to hide. The young worms were then swallowed as food by other fish, so that the worms could reproduce in their guts as well. It wasn’t long until nearly every fish was infected and dying. By the time I noticed the worms emerging for oxygen, the parasite was too well established to isolate. There’s more to say here, but this is effectively my reason for quarantine. This doesn’t happen to most people, I’m glad for that, but I’ll never let it happen to me again. I don’t medicate for everything, but I do medicate for internal parasites now, and yes, I quarantine for a month. I would guess that my misfortune was because of these rams, as they were infected the second time I bought them years later, and managed to shut down a section of tanks at the store they were from. TL;DR I understand your reasoning, and I used to follow it, but because of an experience I had with parasitic nematodes, I will always QT and treat preventatively.
Just got 6 of these in my 10g. I want to add another species not sure yet what type
@@michaelfriedman2221 Consider a school of dwarf corydoras?
Can they live with apistograms ,
@@gailtenaglia4398 I don’t see why not. Apistogramma don’t seem interested in eating other fish.
Half-true. Some people just don't like squeezing out dirty sponges every month. Some people like cartridges.
Also you've nailed the ending to start transition thing it's awesome
Ok these graphics are sick I can't lie
I used to obsess about keeping a pristine tank that I gave everything a thorough scrub down each time I did a water change. And I'd change the sponges too! Now I know better about beneficial bacteria, I don't do scrubbing & changing sponges & my aquarium fish are thriving. 😊
