    Well, Well, welcome to my home, 56 years born and bred Rochdale, work around the corner of slattocks top lock ( the ship inn) lived in Littleborough for some years, the canal is part of our lives, we walk it, we cycle it, some idiots run it🤐, this canal may not be the most picturesque but it was built for industrial and business development, when you look around try to think about it 200 years ago, to build a canal over the top of the pennines with no direct water supply, loving your vlogs of the Rochdale, not many vloggers come up north, but it is beautiful when the sun decides to shine, 🤣🤣🤣❤❤

      Rochdale itself was, yeah, kind of bad, but not nearly as bad as the Walsall Arm or some other places we’ve been... could definitely use a concerted cleanup. Shame, too, as it stops people from seeing what is overwhelmingly one of the best and prettiest canals! M

    Great video, I used to be a police officer in Failsworth/Chadderton & Oldham and remember spending a day at a scene guarding a red Ford fiesta that was underwater and upside down and stuck solid in one of the more remote locks. There wasn't a road leading up to it either. Anyway, the dive team came to check for bodies and once none were found it was left to CRT to remove it. I remember it well because I was dying for the loo, I was there maybe right hours) and every time I tried to sneak into the bushes for a quick wee a bloody jogger would come running by and usually stop for a long conversation about the car in the lock.

    I know you inherited the name of your Narrowboat “Perseverance” but it couldn’t have been more aptly named for your endeavors! I’m use to seeing you, Jo and Michael, worn out at the end of the day, but quite honestly you both looked a bit tired, worn and battered at the beginning. So with a somewhat dreary day, for August anyway, you both managed to keep a good pace and good humor (I’m King Henry the 8th I am, I am 😂) through the rain, locks and weed hatch arm scraping. I know this is three and a half months behind real time, but I still can’t believe you are going for silver propeller site 26, amazing! All the rain can make for a tough day even though it’s the reason “Jolly ole England” is so green and beautiful. I know you guys are probably currently back in lock down and catching up on your vlogs but please keep them coming. So many of us love them and live vicariously through your adventures. Stay safe, healthy and give George a hug from me , such a patient and good dog. 😁 Cheers from Florida. “Where the Gulf Stream sends you guys all the warmer water, air and rain!” Seriously, the southernmost point of Britain is further north than the northern most part of the contiguous United States and London lies further North than all the major Canadian cities such as Vancouver, Montreal, Quebec City and Toronto. Kind of amazing when you think about it. Let’s hope that global warming doesn’t change the Gulf Stream and put the UK into a much colder climate! 🥺

    Lucky you having another boat to share the locks with :) The high water level at least cleared a lot of the litter from the surface of the canal and meant you could slide over the assorted trolleys, mattresses and other junk the lovely people of Rochdale chuck into the canal. Hope you got to meet the Lady of the Littleborough Laundrette - she is a real character.

    When you see the few beautifully restored and now re-occupied mills along the canals, it makes you realise the loss both aesthetically and environmentally of all these buildings, when they are knocked down or just left derelict to rot. And this in a country where we have a massive under-supply of housing - time for a rethink?
    24:00 It's very wet, but at least its summer - so it's a bit warmer. How about a wet suit, or neoprene outfit. Allows surfers to go out in any weather. And you get to look like a seal.

    These videos are great for me, thanks. Very enjoyable and informative, and detailed enough that I can follow the route on Google Earth. It's very useful to see these Northern routes up close as I'm buying a widebeam next year and it's tricky to work out the ideal dimensions for maximum cruising. So far, it seems a 57ft x 10ft is the best bet, but I'd like the 12ft unless that's too restricting. There isn't ( that I've found ) a detailed 'widebeam network' map, so I'm hunting through the canal guides to mark where I definitely can't go.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  4 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately the best resource I’ve seen is the the dimensions list from the CRT (canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/original/32433-waterway-dimensions.pdf), but it’s organized alphabetically by waterway, rather than as a map. You might want to use that and good canal map and highlighter to work out the best routes and dimensions - no idea where you might find such a map though ;-) - from the few anecdote we’ve had from more “go anywhere” wide-beamers we’ve met it seems that you’d maybe want to err towards the 10’ width, at least one of them had ultimately decided to sell down in width when they got their second widebeam to be able to take it further. But I’d definitely ask around. Certainly there’s a lot of canal that a 12’ boat can at least theoretically reach. M

    • @terencejay8845
      @terencejay8845 4 роки тому

      @@MinimalList Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the CRT guide, which is handy, but needs scrutiny. I'm buying old Waterways World magazines and I have three of the Nicolson guides. As you say, a keen eye and a highlighter is the way to go. If I can find a narrowboat with enough headroom, that would be ideal. Maybe I can commission a taller one!

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  4 роки тому +1

      Headroom can be a bit tricky, though yeah for a new build you can get it just right... used, you really just have to look around, as there are plenty of boats I can be comfortable in (I’m about 6’2”) but you’ll end up have to see a bunch where you hit your head before finding a decent compromise. I’m happy with narrow beams, personally... you get used to it, and I’d really only consider a widebeam if I very definitely wasn’t going to move very much. Some of the truly best bits of the system are only accessible to narrowboats, so personally I think the extra width isn’t worth the reduced opportunity to roam. But you definitely have to find what’s right and comfortable for you! M

      @terencejay8845 4 роки тому

      @@MinimalList I'm the same - 6'2" (6'3" in heels ) I've seen some narrows on sale stating 6'7", but many are too low. The bed size is an issue, too. I sleep like a starfish. It will be an interesting search. Thanks for your response. I'll keep watching, with interest.

    What can you do with British Summer weather, especially up north? Often changeable, sun one minute, the clouds next, dry then wet, windy and bleak or still, close and humid. And what on earth can you wear? Putting things on, taking things off...Most waterproofs worn in such conditions make you either sweaty or freezing. Shorts and tees until it rains, or the wind blows or the midges find you. And then the choice of footwear for all possible conditions. Wellies, boots, trainers or sandals. Being continually damp or sweaty seems to be the price here for an outdoor life.

    That Shire Cruisers narrow boat Norfolk is a very pretty boat. Very spiffy, cheerful and sharp looking. I looked that boat up on its hire company web site. (Shirecruisers.com.uk) It has a nice layout. I like that boat quite a bit. Looks to be a very comfortable boat.

      Wooden soles and leather uppers. Walkley make them still at Hebden Bridge, so maybe some were spotted on the trip through. www.clogs.co.uk/shoe%20clogs.htm They would sometimes be fitted with clog irons, bits of metal attached to the sole to make them last longer. Much sparking fun could be had with those.
      Ready to sling your clogs probably means angry or frustrated, I'd guess.

      I’m not sure if hire boat companies would rent to a single hander. You may have to check with them first and go from there. I would probably advise a narrow canal that doesn’t have too many locks if it’s your first time!
