I only moved to Long Eaton in the mid 90s, but I often cycle from Dockholme Lock up to ilkeston and back in the summer. I've heard older residents call it "Dockie Lock", and kids today still refer to the area between Toton Sidings and the canal as "Dockie". That chimney with the radio masts is gone now. Demolished last year.

The canal and the turning of the leaves look gorgeous. There probably won't be any leaves left on the trees by the time I get there in November. Everybody seems to be tripping off around Scotland. Lucky beggars! Have loads of fun on your travels. Cheers.

    Morning again Anthony,
As usual just enjoyed your lastest Canal walk, I know the area very well, as my Grandparents once lived in Long Eaton, then moved down the road to Breeston (sorry I'm crap and spelling) lol 😂 and have many childhood memories of myself, mum, sister and grandparents going for walks in the summer months when myself and my sister would stall over a couple of weeks in the school holidays ☺️ it's a lovely area too.
Plus also my Auntie and Uncle live in Sandiacre now, so I have a lot of connections to do with that area which is good.
Anyway today (Sunday) I've just been on a short walk in the Riddings area.
It's sign posted as the Riddings Railway Walk, you can't miss the sign lol 😂 as it's one of those big blue Derbyshire County Council boards.
Anyway it's only a short walk and it brings you into the back end of Swanwick Junction (Midland Railway Centre) Butterley.
There's an old signal post to look out for too with a bit of signal arm left, and an old footbridge too which was good.
Apparently according to one of locals who I bumped into, he told me that it was the Branch Line to the Thorntons Chocolate factory which was interesting to know.
Anyway if you want to check it out sometime yourself then I may see it again in a video on UA-cam?
    Hint Hint 😁
If you have to go via Public Transport, then you need to catch a Trent/Barton bus from Alfreton Railway Station called the NINES. 9.1 or 9.3 and ask the driver to drop you off at the third stop in Riddings village, if you tell him or her where your walking, like I did today, then they'll know where to drop you off okay.
Once again I'm really enjoying your videos, keep up the good work mate, and look forward to seeing you soon on UA-cam.
    Ps.
Don't forget to do the old Kilburn to Little Eaton Colliery Line sometime, it's a good one, as I've done it myself.
When you get to Kilburn Toll Bar, there's two parts of the Railway Line to do, a short bit on the right, then cross over the road on the left to carry on with the rest of the line.
    Ps again.
A bit of advice Ant if you and your team do that route, make sure you take some hedge cutters with you, lol 😂 you may need them? 😁
Anyway once again thanks for posting brilliant videos.
    All the best from.
    Michael Wood.

Hi Mike 😀 I'll look into the Thorntons line as I'm heading over that way soon to do the Cromford Canal and follow the route of the tunnel. We also went to Rowsley Viaduct today, was going to have a sniff around the tunnel too but the weather turned sour. Also today we went to Wingfield Manor, no access at all currently 😔

    • @devonianlad9413
      @devonianlad9413 5 років тому

      Hiya again Anthony,
Thanks for the reply back and thanks for the info on Wingfield Manor as I was going over there this weekend, it's a shame there's no access to the place, I know there is a footpath which I think goes around the grounds, but not had the chance to try it out yet.
Well looking forward to seeing the Cromford Canal video, you probably already know this, but did you know that there's a part of the Cromford Canal in the Ripley area? It starts at the old Butterly Works and goes under the building and comes out at the other end of Swanwick at an old pub called the Newlands Inn or it used to be called that before it was pulled down.
If you go to Swanwick you can catch a narrow gauge train service which takes you into the Golden Valley area and ends up at one of Old tunnel mouths of the Cromford Canal.
Oh and on the matter of the old Rowsley Viaduct, it's easy to get up and is lovely to walk on with nice viewing points of the Derbyshire dales.
When you get to the end of the viaduct, all you have to do is climb over the metal fence like I did with a bit of difficulty, (don't forget we are men) lol 😂 (so be careful) anyway joking apart, when you get over the fence, it brings you into a bit of wooded area, then you come into St. Catherines Church and if you can please put this bit on the video, there is a grave stone which tells you about the men who died in Haddon Tunnel when part of it collapsed, it was sad to read, anyway I won't spoil it for you, once the weather improves it'll be better for exploring.
Anyway hope I've been some help to yourselves?
      See you soon from.
      Devon Mike. ☺️

Yes we had a wander around the grave yard, very peaceful. Hoping to get back onto the trackbed close by and head off towards the tunnel. I walked and filmed Cromford to Ambergate on the canal in late November, so that shouldn't be long coming on. I'll look into Ripley later tonight 😀👍

Loving the fact that the canal is so peaceful in a relatively built up area. The Toton Works looked sad but still historical, then five minutes down the canal you come across modern society with all those phone masts on the chimney, I know which I preferred!!! Really looking forward to the final section to see where the canal and the Rivers Trent and Soar meet up, I bet it's a great sight.

I lived in Kirk Hallam from 1952 and cannot remember the Nutbrook canal being is use as you said up to the 1960s. Having checked on Wikipedia, I can confirm that it closed finally in 1949.
Also the stretch at Stanton wasn't used to deliver materials to the work, rather - it took away finished goods which were produced at Stanton.
    Wikipedia:
"With the mines failing to pay tolls for goods carried on the canal, and in some cases refusing to accept responsibility for the subsidence, most of it was closed in 1895, although the final 1.5 miles (2.4 km) remained in use until 1949."

Lots of memories from my youth in the '70's.
Did you pass the site of the hot water discharge from Stanton Ironworks into the canal right at the start of the video? IIRC it was at the point where the brickwork you described and the iron pilings met.

I used to live in Long Eaton, I know the Erewash Canal very well. It’s a very underused canal. May in the future when the Derby Canal or Cromford Canal open it will get more canal boat traffic...

    • @TrekkingExploration
      @TrekkingExploration  5 років тому

It would be amazing if that happened, i guess it's the tunnel problem 😔

Most boats only seem to get as far as the winding hole by Tamworth road. I don't know why. I've paddled it further and it looks nice to me (as seen on this video). Lots of locks though, maybe that's it.

you also missed out sandy bottoms were famliies would gather together safely on the sandy substratum and have communal picnics every summer for years.

Spelling mistakes again Anthony lol 😂 this is what happens when you right a message and forget to put your glasses on lol then you read it back again and end up look like an idiot once you've sent it lol 😂
I meant to say, have fond memories when myself and my sister used to stay (not stall) lol 😂 over at our grandparents in the summer holidays.
Sorry again Anthony if I had a brain I'd be useless still lol 😂
    Once again from. Michael Wood.
