After watching this video, it inspired me to try a little more mechanical know how to do what I did. I have a Troy Built interchangeable tool shaft line trimmer that is very hard to start. And a Ryobi that runs like a bat out of hell with a curved shaft. So with a little sawsall work, I was able to adapt the interchangeable tool shaft on to the Ryobi. Now it is a very useful machine. Thanks Steve, I have been learning a ton from you and now I've started a lone wolf lawn care company I'm working as hard keeping my equipment serviced at home as I do out on the road.

You're a shade tree guru! Love work around! There have been a couple of tricks you've shown in the past that I tried with great success! Drilling out the jet in the Briggs carburetor was my all-time favorite. Until your video! I was constantly cleaning out that jet! .01 made so much difference! It's unbelievable! I sadly have a 2017 Troy Bilt (20cc?) Straight Shaft I purchased and LOVE.
The Straight Shaft is great for reach, but for comfort I'd rather have a Curved Shaft!
Plus it's REAL NICE that I was able to make a Carb Tuning Tool with a Watertight 12g Electrical Blade Connector... The Round End is "Just Tight Enough" to go over the Air/Fuel Adjustment Screws!
And saved myself $20 from Amazon for a Kit Set! Still would have been nice to have, but Ingenuity is AWESOME!
    Thanks again Steve!
    Take care,

So, I have a Husky 125L with a seized shaft (cable & guide insert melted together inside shaft housing).
In the free section in our local Facebook Marketplace, I found a straight shaft Homelite trimmer. & thanks to your encouraging & informative video, I fixed my Husky! Only mod needed was to drill a small hole for the locating screw. Works great.

After 30 years of doing lawn maintenance, both professionally and for family and friends, l will only own a straight shaft . My Tanaka is the extra long model. I'm 5' 10" and when stood on end it towers above my head. It's great for getting under trees, bushes and cutting deep ditches and tall steep embankments. Not so great for small tight spaces, but I mostly do multiple acre lawns.

Great Video. I installed one of those universal heads and it was a Echo Brand.. I use it on a Echo PAS 280 I didn't like the auto bump design. I use 150 line and it works great for PAS 280, I can get about 2 to 3 yards of use with the 2 piece of nylon string and I don't use the saftey gurd I use a full mesh face shield helps with air ventilation over the sold plastic face shield..

I've got this Multi-tool style unit but the motor is a gutless piece of cr@p .
I have a couple of line trimmers that only get used if my main unit fails, so I might have to rip them apart and see if I
can transplant one of the motors onto the multi-tool shaft.

Not sure on Stihl, but on an Echo trimmer you take the motor off as shown in the video and then pull the drive shaft out of the tube. I have a helper hold most of the shaft while I smear grease along the entire shaft. Feed the shaft back in the tube making sure it seats in the cutting head. I turn it by hand to make sure it's in. Put the motor back on as shown in the video and you've grease the drive shaft on your trimmer.

Your timing is impeccable! I have an Echo straight shaft that the engine filled with water & died. I bought a used FS45 and the driveshaft is broken. I would really prefer a straight shaft, as it's what I'm used to, and I have to cover a large yard. I read hints that I could do exactly what you showed. Before I spend another dollar, I'm going to the barn in the morning to see if I can't Frankenstein the Echo shaft onto the Stihl motor. Shaft diameters seem to be the same, I'm betting I can...

    • @DanTuckerSails
      @DanTuckerSails 5 років тому

So yes. You can make an Echo SRM-225 shaft fit a Stihl FS45 motor. Just needed to drill a hole for the anti-rotation bolt, and add a wrap of electrical tape, the Echo shaft is 0.5mm smaller in diameter according to my calipers.
Of course I filled it with bad gas and now it won't run 🤷‍♂️

Some fresh gas and it fired right up. Has WAY more grunt than the Echo did. Powers through brush like nothing. Just need to swap on the Stihl handle, the ergonomics are a bit off

After you have changed what you just did can you add the attachments to it (ie) tree trimmer etc?

    Hey Steve
Do you know if this conversion will work on an older model fs36 trimmer?

Would this work on a Stihl FS38? I got one on a package deal at a garage sale I'd like to make it into a brush cutter. Is this model stout enough for brush duty?

Awesome video! So I bought a Echo Gt-225 curved shaft trimmer. I regret getting it curved. Can that also be replaced?

Have a great running toro curved shaft given to me but the trimmer head was DOA. Didn't matter because I thought of the old ryan straight shaft in my shed. To my dismay the Ryan shaft didn't work with the clutch housing on the toro. Should I look for toro or other brands that would work with it ?

69$ for new shaft. $45 labor $193 for new SF 40 weed whacker. Thanks for the video.

    Excellent information thanks Steve.
Mate, I also have a solid shaft brush cutter (Homelite) and it is one of those interchangeable jobs that has a brush cutter attachment, Hedge trimmer & a tiny chain saw attachment. Now, I was wondering how you lubricate the bearings in these interchangeable shafts? The three separate shafts seem to have a bearing at each end but they are way down inside the shaft tubes & there are no grease nipples, so how do I lubricate them? I wish it had a flexible shaft because they take cutting shocks a little better.
EDIT: I might have answered my own question.. I just went to my local Hardware barn & bought a small diameter PVC Tube & screw on cap & 3/4 filled it with oil.
I then put the entire brush cutter shaft tube in the PVC tube & let it soak in the oil for a few minutes while manually turning the shaft.
After about 3 minutes the shaft bearings ran smooth again.
I let the excess oil drain back into the PVC Tube & wiped the outside clean, job done - clean & simple.
I will probably have to do it regularly now because the shaft bearing have had a lot of work without lubrication up until now..

Hi buddy !! My head or housing got crooked from trimming some heavy brush. Do I just loosen the bolts and twist it ?

Steve, I just bought a second hand FS38. I can’t get the trimmer head off. The bump knob just keeps spinning and spinning. There’s also some in and out play in the whole head. After watching some videos, I wonder if it’s the bearing. But hard to inspect when I can’t get the head off. Any ideas?

No need to reply. Got it figured out. The head was completely smashed inside. Bearing is good. Has to cut and pry the head open, then grind a channel for a flat head screwdriver into the end of the shaft to get the head bolt off. New head on the way, and good as new. Thank you so much for the videos Steve!!
