- I own a Firman T07571 7500w generator and this is how I made the cleanest hookup yet to my fishroom. This keeps the noise and exhaust out of my home, and provides power to the essentials when it’s needed most.

Love this video! I recently just installed a generator that will feed the entire home (select circuits) with a generator interlock device. About $1300 all in. Not a bad price to protect the investment we so cherish.
Manual transfer switches are definitely the way to go. Easy to install and get the house back up and running during a storm.

I have a Generac 7500 watt and have used it a few times already. Good idea to start them up every two weeks to prevent lacquer build up in the gas line.
Excellent Video, my generator has saved my reef 4x. I had a Coleman, it was solid. Got in 1995 lasted until 2021. I purchased a Westinghouse 7500DF. I really like Propane and natural gas. I got the NATURAL GAS AND LOW-PRESSURE PROPANE CONVERSION KIT. I’ll never run it with fuel if I don’t have to. I can run my reef room, Central Air/Heat. The necessitates. Propane reg tank lasts 8-10hrs. Natural Gas I let run for 14hrs to give the generator a breather, check the oil etc.
I test run twice a year.

I have this exact generator. I love it. They say its quiet but yeah 😂 i had mine in storage for over 1 year. Had to use it due to outage. Started right up no problems. It does help if you use the pull start to prime the system first. There was a book zip tied to the genny that had this start up procedure. As for each type there is a diffrent process. But generally all the same.
Still trying to figure out how i hook this up to my house power box. Via a wire. But i like the setup you have. Any insight on this would be much appricated
I get about 8 hours on propane. And 12 hours on gas. Also love the built in co2 detector built into the generator. Shuts itself off if it had a problem with c02
Never knew i had to drain the gasline. Will have to pull it out of storage and do that tonight.
If you want to keep the gas in it long term you need to get non ethanol gas. Also don’t cheap out on cheap gas like 87. make sure the octane rating is above 90. The higher the better with small engines.

that's a super important suggestion!!! I switched all my small motors over to non ethanol gas about a year and a half ago. i was blown away by the difference!

The only thing that worries me about big generators is how much gas they use. Going through 15 gallons a day is a lot of gas to have on hand and if things are really bad, and you can’t get gas, it’s going to be rough. If possible I would always have a small generator on hand as a back up, one that that can run on 5 gallons a day or less so if need be, you can run only vital equipment to keep the tank alive.
It really doesn’t matter how many gallons you have to use - I have never considered that even once. I need electricity and I merely add gas as needed. I don’t keep more than 5g on hand usually.
I had to buy $80 worth of ice during a heatwave a few years ago to keep the tank below 80°F. 🤷♂️
My concern would be that a situation would occur that gas is not available, or very hard to come by. We have had winter storms where people could not get out of their neighborhoods for a few days so if you didn’t have an enough fuel stored, you were out of luck. Not likely in Texas but there are other situations that could making getting a fuel a real problem. Just my 2 cents! Thanks for the video!
Cool, I have the same generator but in SoCal mine would not start with the choke. My setup is not as comfy as I do not have a sub panel for the aquarium and so I need to lay extension cords to the aquarium and switch the cords out manually. That said I am contemplating to buy a battery power station (somewhere past 1500kWh which is normally enough here and if it takes longer I switch to this generator.
BTW if I may ask (because I am Swiss) what is about the Swiss flag?

I bought this one three years ago, and have used it about six times. I had it running 24 hours straight last September.
How much did you pay to have that connector plug? inside your house? Or did your house come with that? One where you connected the black thick cable.
I ordered the cable, the receptacle and the switch box above it from Amazon. The cable is 25’ long. I think I paid about $440 for all three parts, the switch box was the most expensive part.

I bought a new gas generator because of this video but I just found out that if you don’t have a inverter generator it will ruin your sensitive electronics like computers and cellphones if you charge them so my question is will it ruin our reef electrical units like heaters,monitor devices, led lights,power heads,return pumps should I or yourself be concerned with this in mind???
I have plugged all those things into the various generators in the past and never ran into any issues. Radions, Vortechs, Abyzz, SKY, my tv, computer, iPhone, iPad, laptop… no problems ever.

Propane or natural gas doesn't gum up carburetor, I quit putting gasoline in mine.
You also want to make sure that your generator is a sinewave or you will have to buy a sinewave converter. I ran my computer on a generator and it burned out my monitor and power supply. Because it was not a sinewave generator. Sensitive electronics should not be ran off a normal generator.
The inverter-generator is a better type, which costs more. I have run my computer many times off generator power, but didn't run into any issues. If you have a computer UPS, you could plug that into the extension cord, and then plug your computer into that UPS to help filter the power perhaps.
I never run ethanol in any small motor it pulls moisture and will Gunk up your motor. Seafoam is a good additive to add if you're storing for long periods. It keeps gas fresh and eliminates water.
If you are staying in that house long term, why don't you invest in a whole house generator with an automatic transfer switch? I live in a warm climate prone to hurricanes . I have lost power in the summer months for as long as 9 days. The biggest problem for me is keeping the tank temperature to a safe level. Without being able to cool the house the temperature in the tank would be in the high 90s for extended periods. No amount of fans blowing across the water's surface will keep the tank temps in the low 80's if the ambient air in you house is in the middle 90s.
I agree. When that happened here, I was floating bags of ice in my sump to combat the heat.
I didn’t answer your first question. I’d need natural gas which I don’t have, or a big propane tank next to my house. Plus the generac. It would likely cost me $14k-16k or more.
Marc, Thanks for your reply. I wish I had natural gas but I live in a rural area so its propane. Because I live in Fl surrounded by trees with nearly all the electrical lines above ground , I lose power frequently i.e. at least once a month and more in the summer time when we have frequent thunderstorms. A whole house generator capable of running most of the house, my fish tanks and one of my two A/C units is a near necessity I would think that since your business is all reef tank related that you might be able to depreciate the cost as a business expense. @reef
@@RobTeeJr I wish I could... I may be able to get a partial credit but then I'm back to spending $15,000 or so for a whole-house setup (I looked into it in 2023 again). Years ago, the Generac system was $8,000, plus whatever electrical needed to be added. I should have done it then.
Shame on you for having a gas generator! I do the same thing, but I have a neighbor who thinks I'm destroying the earth by running my generator. Great Video.
lol - your neighbor needs to look at all the gasoline powered vehicles just in your general vicinity first. ;)
