- This seed starting technique is an absolute game changer! Quickly and easily streamline your seed starting operation at the lowest cost and with the least amount of work. This is one of my favorite ways to get my plants going. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
How's the garden doing? Would love to see a tour if you're up for it, Even if it's not all lushed out, I'm a garden voyeur! God bless you Dan!
Thank you, I am planting more this weekend.
Great video 🎶🎶 True love lights up your thoughts like the sun lights up the world, I wish you lots of abundance and Prosperity, God bless you ❤🙏✨💙🌼👼
God bless you, thousands of blessings 💜💜🌸🌸✝✝🙏🙏
Thank you ❤ Namaste 🥰
Amen ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Your seed starting mix? The Bonny plants in cups smaller than those were $5 yesterday at HD. Soil is up $2 a bag. All your tips are literally life and money saving right now. And I also planted my Botanical Interests eggplant yesterday 😁
That is EXACTLY how I cut my drainage holes in my Solo cups ❤ They are awesome for potting up my Pepper & Tomato plants but I’ve never thought about starting the seeds in my Solo cups with potting mix in the bottom waiting for the roots to arrive 😂 Genius
Don't forget about the large yogurt, sour cream and ricotta containers- they're FREE!
Yeah, I have a ton of those.
We need a vid on no tiller ground prep.
Thank you for the video request. I like the idea. Cheers!
@@plantabundance thank you!! I will not fail to plant this year. Keep me pumped up. Failure is not an option!!!
I see you are starting seeds in a mix, but on another video you suggest starting them in washed sand. How do I decide which method to use? thanks
I agree with you about what planting does for the mind. It’s my calm place!
I have watched so many videos and left with many questions. Your cheap and easy methods are a game changer!
Check out Costco for those cups. Much cheaper there. If you aren’t a member, ask a friend who does, to pick some up.
They have the more heavy duty style I prefer as well. Cheers!
Awesome idea im wondering what ur seed and potting mix is made of
Hi Dan, great video with lots of helpful information. Thanks for sharing andtake care🙂
Yup, excellent system !
This is how I’ve started all my seeds this year. I’m in Tx, zone 8a, and all my seeds have germinated so far, and I’ve had zero issues using these cups.
Thanks for sharing. All the best!
Excellent. I'm the most anxious at seed starting time. 🙃 I've tried several different methods to get my seeds started. I ❤️ this method. From Baton Rouge Louisiana USA.
I have been using those red Solo cups for 2 years now and they work great. What I do differently is I get about 6 to 8 cups and stack them, turn them upside down, then use a quarter inch drill bit and drill a hole through all of them on the bottom. This allows drainage but also allows the plants to soak water up from the bottom so I never have to water from the top.
Good idea!!!
I do the same thing with my cups.
I bought at a big store seeds who NEVER germinate with my Solo cup. I look 10 minutes ago on the enveloppe that the seeds were from 2018. Is that a good reason that nothing grows??
Thanks Dan!
What was in your watering mix?
Rain water.
I se a spray bottle to gently water the top.
Great tip Dan! Thank you for this.
Last year Bonney Plants was like 4:78 each
All the more reason to grow your own. Cheers!
???
Dan, I love to watch your videos, especially when I haven't been in my garden in a long while. I used old solo cups as well for seed starting fruit trees. I'll be using coconut coir in my seed trays this year, which I used to get at a local Walmart for really cheap in a compressed brick. They were cheaper than the maker's website. They don't seem to have them this year, though, but I have a surplus since I bought a lot last year. That greenhouse seems to be doing great for you! Mine was destroyed by a freak thunderstorm three weeks after I got it, unfortunately.
Thank you! Sorry to hear about your greenhouse. It must have been some storm. So far we've held up to 40 mph winds on several occasions. Just yesterday we had whipping winds and so far it's held up great. Do you think there's anyway you could reinforce the structure to make it more robust or are you going to go down a different route?
@@plantabundance I still have the mangled frame. Thought about digging trenches on either side and laying 6mil over it and then filling in the trenches, burying the 6mil on either side.
I'm sorry for the loss of your greenhouse. I bought peat/coconut coir in 1" thick bricks from my local $tree. I tried it, it works great! So, I went back to get more. I hope this helps. 🙏🏾
@@clynthia0510 Nice! I also found some cheap at "Everything 99¢" store.
Dude! Show us where to find a light set-up, heat mats and warmth source for all the seed trays when we don’t have a greenhouse. I can afford one, we just live on a hillside and don’t have a flat spot to put one😟. Do you recommend making one as small as a cattle panel width cover with what mil plastic?
I love weeding!!! 🤪
Bingo. Same way we do it.
GREAT idea!!!
Excellent tips and advice! Thank you. 😊
Thank you! I appreciate you stopping by. Cheers!
💚
TY I have used solo cups for years. Never thought to fill with soil first and seed starting mix on top!! You made my day ty. New sub
Solo cups really are great for seedling starts .. they can house your plants all the way from germination to transplanting. 18 fit in a 1020 tray .. I have a little different way of putting the drainage holes in the cup: A wire coat hanger, bent into two prongs, about 8" long or so. Turn a stack of solo cups upside down, heat the wire, and punch two holes down through the entire stack. Reheat quickly, and put in 2 more for a total of 4 holes .. quick and easy.
*smile* yup, saves a lot of time that way. I do the same thing, but with my Styrofoam heated cutter :)
Another tip is to expose all seeds to the south pole of a powerful magnet for some 20 minutes or so before sowing...
Please elaborate...
@@plantabundance I have tried this 4 times now, implementing a control group every time, with the same results as he is describing here. 😊

😕
Thank you I'm going to use the cups this year. I'm thinking herbs would benefit from this .
A plant in Georgia is $5.98!
Dang. Honestly, I haven't even looked at what they're going for this year. Last year $3.99 was the average. Starting seeds @ home for the win!
@@plantabundance Burpee $5.98 per plant and seeds are averaging $5 a pack. If a specialty seed 10 seeds for $12.95. Insane!
@@shirleysuchdolski6042 igot seeds at Rural King 25cents last year I expect it again. Spring sell.
Yup.. $5 a veggie plant in N Texas at the big box stores. Local smaller town farmers markets and nurseries... $1.50. Get my seeds in fall on clearance.
The last cold night was last night. I have dozens on veg and flower under light to move out to my little 8x5 green house today. I use solo cups mostly myself, I love the size. Moving day! I love it.
Love it!!! 👍
I enjoy gardening, brings us closer as a family and for me it's quite therapeutic also. Happy gardening🌱
A couple of years ago, I cut the bottom out of one cup and set it inside of another. I started the seeds in that, and transplanted them in the garden in the first cup. This did not disturb the roots at all and they did really well. It was an experiment and the ones in the bottomless cup did better that the seeds sown directly into the garden. Just a thought for you....
When you add ascorbic acid to the water, does that change the Ph?
Because so little ascorbic acid is needed the effect is little to none. 1000 mg will treat 30-50 gallons of water. Larger doses could slightly lower the ph. Cheers!
Thanks Dan, great practical tips!
Awesome! Getting excited about spring and gardening again!😊
if you go to walmart or lowe's you will pay $4.95 per plant .. and i too have utilized the solo cup for seed starting this year. however i think i was in too much of a hurry to get started and may have started too early .. but i can plant more
I just cannot pay that much. What a shame.
@@camillabarnes6678 Go buy an organic tomato at the farmers market and harvest the seeds from it and plant. 😁
🌺Using solo cups are great. Thanks for sharing your technique.
Brilliant to premoisten the potten mix in the lower portion of the pots. Just a little watering for the seed starting mix helps ensure seeds are not dislodged.
Hey Dan, I just wanted to thank you so much for all the knowledge you've given me over the years since I've been watching. Many of your ideas have influenced my 7 year old food forest and most of my seed starting habits come from information you shared before. Can't thank you enough. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
Thank you Mj. I appreciate the feedback. It means a lot. Wishing you a healthy and abundant garden for 2023 and beyond. Cheers!
Thank you again for the information. We also just love being outside in our garden.
Just bought a bunch of those cups. Thanks for sharing how best to use them! 👍
Good idea to use potting mix in the lower 3/4 of the cup and seed starting mix on top 1/4. Have been gardening for many years and I learnt something today. Thank you.
Good video. I like your recommendations. I'm in the northeast. What do you think of using a heat coil in the garden and is it helpful in these cooler climates?
You'd prob waste a lot of energy trying to pre-heat your open spaces that way,the wind alone at this time of yr would prob offset any artificial heat at ground level. You'd also need to check w/manufacturer that it's fully water-proof, not just water-resistant. I'm in MA, so I get it, the wait can feel like forever, esp the last cpl yrs where snow has been scarce & instead of spring we get a rainy season, lol
My suggestion, if you want to try that, would be to create small greenhouse type covers & use the heating coils only for small sectioned out areas for plants you want to get an early in-ground jump on. Though I'd still wait until temps aren't still dipping into the negatives, hehe. I also wouldn't try this to sprout seeds or even w/ delicate seedlings, I'd try w/more deep sown sprouted tubers, rooted/branch cuttings, pods, bulbs & hardy plants(,esp native ones used to our usual Winter weather abuse *snicker*) you can expand areas & add more delicate plants as temps rise, allowing you to still start earlier than most of your neighbors.
Lettuces & other cold hardy/ fast harvest veggies would prob also do great w/this method, since they do well in Winter greenhouses & tilt-top cold boxes.
Depending on what type of heated coiling you're using ( there's grids, lines, ect)you could make yourself some covered, micro-climates in raised beds or with the good, thicker flexible greenhouse material & some stakes & hooping, create coil heated rows ( don't forget to cut closeable venting squares every 3'-5'), in your sunniest spots.
If you give it a try, let me know how it works out ( UA-cam PM) & Good Luck !
More than $4, more like $6-$8 a transplant. Im glad i started growing from seed. I was intimidated starting seeds. Bought a lot of transplants when i first started. But so glad i havent need transplants the last year the prices are really high
wow thats so smart , fill with compost and top with seed starting mix , now that is using your head , thankyou so much, looks almost spiritual watching you👌👌🙏🙏 👍👍
Love this. I'm still a couple months away from most of my seed starting, but I sure do like the idea of not top watering constantly (which is what it feels like I do).
I see I need a heating pad for more successful seedlings. Thanks
Thanks for stopping by. You can also use the heating pad to ferment foods, warm a mini greenhouse and/or add heat to an outdoor worm bin in the winter. It's a good item to have around the homestead. Cheers!
GM Brenda in area 6b. I've been watching for a while which I enjoy so much but I'm trying something new. I wrap my tent in mylar blankets this yr. hoping it will give me better grow for my seedlings. What do you think???
Dan, what is the brand of the electric sprayer you use? Really looks loke a handy size. Love. your enthusiasm.
It's a "Field King". Cheers!
This is the way I've always started my seeds, picked it up from my dad who also did it this way for years. although I take 6-8 cups stacked together and use my drill with a small drill bit and put 6 small holes in the bottom of the cups, it's basically the same. I have about 100 plants started so far, can't wait for spring !! you're absolutely right , gardening for me is like meditation too
That happens a lot out here in the Dry Interior Desert Climate of Metro Phx, AZ...birds peck at both fruit & veggies in search of hydration...
Great idea ! Duh,No clue why i've never thought of those,my dollar store usually has those- thanks.
I use seed starting trays, but I either use one that has moveable cells, so I can make the grow area the size I want, or I use an empty tray & fill it with those great biodegradable seed bags( they come in multiple sizes,I prefer the 4x4" or 6x6" ones, depending on plant)
You can also make your own cheap, seedling containers just like you do your raised beds ☺, either making simple mini cardboard boxes- in sizes you want- or,for a full tray of the same species, simple slotted strips that fit into each other, creating individual cells in whatever size you'd like.
You can either create boxes w/bottoms & cut drainage slits in them.( Or, to save time, you can make open-bottom box & attach one pc of cardboard to bottom w/cpl drops of a non-toxic white glue( & cutting drainage holes for ea cell) Both of these get set up in a simple shallow tray :)
Another hint for cheap supplies. Check in w/your local box/chain stores near end of fall ( that has a garden center of course, lol) Since they buy all their supplies/plants for Spring, etc,at end of season they end up tossing out a ton of slotted bottom pans, used growing cell flats, containers & my fave, dead-ish perennials that are easily cut back & revived at home.
Get to know the sales ppl & they'll usually put it all aside for you to take for free..otherwise check by their dumpsters ( where you often also can find easily fixed chipped/damaged flower-pots too)
My local friend at the HD also has given me unsellable( ripped open)bags of potting soil, manure, soil additives, etc, too. Sometimes I get super lucky & it's a yr when they've done some revolving plant displays & give me all the ones they take out when switching over !! Don't forget to check imm after the holidays for tossed out "living" Christmas trees too..While they'll prob have dead spots, are shedding like a Persian cat & are dried out, lol, as long as there's still life in the roots & branches, a little tlc can easily fix that.
This yr I hit the mother-lode & got 14 different (4 species)2'-5' mini pine & fir trees in early Jan (that all had $25-$80 price tags)that in Spring will look amazing lining my new walkway...all for FREE !
Keep the good ideas coming ☺
If you live near a local convention center that does plant shows & ( here you need permission 1st !)
Great video 😊 thanks for sharing and happy gardening 🌿🌱😊🤗
Yes!! I felt that comment about seed starting being great for mental health. I feel the exact same way! It’s so therapeutic for me. I love it! Great video as always. Thanks for sharing! I’ve also started to just top with seed starting mix…it has worked wonders.😊💚 Happy Growing!
I 100% agree about gardening being great for mental health. I call it my "Spring/Summertime Sanity!" 😊
Always amazing Dan!
I've been using cups for a few years, works great.
I used grow bags and the kiddy pond method in last years garden and I had the best tomato harvest ever. I also bought that greenhouse you have. I roll up the sides during the day and roll them down at night to keep the Deer from eating my plants. The best $100. garden investment I have made so far. My success is because of your tips, thank you so much! Now onto "cement tub" gardens.😊
doggone deer eating and squirrels digging makes me mad. I have to cover with tulle and also use the greenhouse.
