- I decided to head south for some warm weather rock hunting this winter, but Mother Nature threw me a curveball. Even though it was cold and windy, I really enjoyed my day searching for Douglas Diamonds in Tennessee.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

More fun travels and rockhounding! Thanks
It's a good day when there are more diamonds than nuts.
Ha ha! good point. There was more broken glass than either diamonds or nuts. The glass doesn't seem to get frosted on this inland lake the way it does on the Big Lake.
Love 💕 Dave!!! Rock on, Dave!!! 🤘
Dave was with us one other day on this trip. He's a great guy.
What a bunch of fun! Thank you for showing the diamonds cleaned and close up. It was cool to see Ann making a ring also. Can't wait to see what the rest of your trip is like!
We were snowed it for two days or you might not have seen that ring.
@@MichiganRocks Wow!
Douglas diamonds 💎 are nice. Can't wait for the next installment of Tennessee Rocks....
The next installment won't be Tennessee Rocks. I was in a different state by then.
Very cool that you were here in East TN!
My sister lives in Cookeville, so I was there the day before.
super neat Tennessee is where my mother got me started rockhounding!! thank you for sharing this awesome video my friend!
Oh my gosh that is amazing!!!!!
That is really cool. I have a friend that lives in Tennessee, so now I have to send her this video.
Better yet, go visit her!
Well she loved your video. She said that place is about 4 hours from her and she will go when she can to checknit out. I would love to go visit her and both of us go hunting together. That would be a blast. I will make it down there one of these days.
Thanks for sharing everyone.
They are really cool 😁. Thanks for sharing ❤.
I hope you had lots of fun in Tennessee! Its one of my favorite states to visit!
I had a ball! I can see why you like it.
These are beautiful! What a fun day you all had.
We sure did!
Oh cool, I was thinking of driving down to Douglas this year, but with the cold and the snow we had here, decided not to. Now I can enjoy your trip vicariously via video! 😇
My fingers just about froze off on the first beach. They took about ten minutes to warm up while driving to the second beach, and that was with a heated steering wheel.
You were only a couple hours from me on the other side of the mountains! So cool you found diamonds. Sorry it was so cold but it’s about 70 degrees today. Spring is springing.
Us too. Henderson County.
It was cold the whole week and was supposed to warm up soon after I came home. Oh, well, maybe next year I can find some warm weather in the south.
@@darrenbenson2606 Rutherford, just got here last August. Lots of rain and mud in the winter I see 😂🤣
@@MichiganRocks I think you just came at the height of winter. Maybe a couple weeks later ✌️❤️
Stay 🔥 warm folks …🔥… 13:05
A nice change. I can feel the cold from here. TFS ❤️🎸🏏
Everyone I met that week told me what a bad job I did of picking a week to visit. It got a lot warmer the next week.
I have never seen rock hounding where you need hemostats to pick them up. I bet it was fun even if it was cold.
Yeah, they were pretty small, but really beautiful. That's why I added in a few close ups in the video.
I can't wait to see what other adventures you guys go on.
That's a bummer because waiting is exactly what you're going to have to do.
@@MichiganRocks ha, too funny.😅
Cool little guys!
wow i live right near there! I have found cool stuff around the lake!
That was a fun hunt. Something brand new for me.
Use to hunt with my parents for these when we lived in the area, probably 15 years ago or so, we now reside in the mitten. Crazy to see you hunting my old spot!
It was fun visiting your old spot. Fun stuff.
Douglas diamonds are new to me. Very cool!
They were new to me too.
Gonna have to stop up and visit with you when I get back to Michigan in the spring and share my finds with you and go rock hunting with you
That was awesome, so very cool
Oh, they sure look pretty❤. Waiting for more vid from ur hunting trip👍
There will be plenty more videos. I'll be doling them out one per week.
The first"possible geode" looked to me as an owl or even a face. Love rocks and paridolia.
Pareidolia is a pretty common thing with rocks.
Its fantastic !
It seems that you had a great day there 👏👏👏
We did. It was a different kind of hunt for me, which was really fun.
@@MichiganRocks
Always hunting is great for me, but this kind of hunting is in another level!
Even I wasn't there, watching your video put smile on my face 😊
Awesome crystals!!
Sweet!
You’re about 3 hours from Franklin where I live. Lake Douglas is a fun place! Next time you’re down my way, will take you Ruby hunting at night with UV!
I’m in Lynchburg! We aren’t that far apart!! Nice to see someone here that lives so close!!
We did something similar to that later in the week. One of these weeks, you'll get to see that video too.
Well, if you get to Franklin, NC, I work at Rose Creek Mine, and you can dig your own dirt and find Star Garnets!
@@nancymcshane3501 Ok, good to know!
Nice Rob, shiny rock are always good
Many of these don't even need to be shined up, they just come that way.
Nice one Rob at 8:10.
Very pretty.
Absolutely Beautiful. GOD BLESS you all
there are rubies in tennessee
I didn't find any of those. Maybe next time.
Great vid and great friends!
This is the area where I lived at. We do have geodes, carnelian, moss agate, lace agate and banded chert just to name a few
Sounds like some great stuff. I like the small piece of banded chert I found.
I would love to go hounding with a small group! I'm trying to plan a few trips already. I have been getting that cooped up feeling! Feels like you're at home, Rob lol brrr! Greenly is such a cool name!
It was cold all week. We even got snowed in for two days. Everyone said I picked the worst possible week to go south. Just my luck!
@@MichiganRocks And here in central Ohio, we got like an inch and a half? I actually started looking to see if the flint farm was open for your way back. I would have met you there. Then it dawned on me that you are back home already, hahaha! I'm still going to try to go if the ground isn't too frozen. It would be a horrible prank if someone shattered a bunch of car windows and tossed all the glass where those diamonds were. I don't know why my brain went there. Was the solid yellow one you found the same material as the diamonds?
@@saralynn518 We only got about an inch and a half in Tennessee too, but it was a very icy inch and a half. I couldn't open my passenger door for three days because it was iced over. They also don't have very good equipment for clearing the roads down there.
@@MichiganRocksmore rural area? Oh, are those diamonds worth much once cleaned up? They are very pretty. Especially the amber colored ones.
@@saralynn518 I was snowed in in Chattanooga. I don't know how much these little diamonds are worth. I don't imagine they're worth a lot.
Nice who wouldn't love to find diamonds for the taking
Well, they're not exactly diamonds, but they sure look similar and they're already faceted.
If you get a sunny day the sun reflects off of them, making them easier to see
There was some sun that day, but it was more cloudy than sunny. We still did okay though.
Looking forward to your week long adventure. I hope it warms up for you. Did Nancy come with you? Amazing that you can find diamonds like that.❤
No, I asked her to come along a bunch of times, but she's not into hunting rocks all day, every day. I was just really happy that she agreed to let me leave her for a week and a half.
Dave could pass for Boxcar Willie's brother. Interesting finds.
I remember an ad for a Boxcar Willy album that used to play on TV when I was a kid. I always thought that name was funny, but I don't remember what he looked like.
@@MichiganRocks Google?
@@powerlinekid4296 Yeah, I know. I was busy when I read your comment. I'll Google him now.
Too bad it was so cold, but the crystals were beautiful! 🙂
I'm glad we weren't getting confused by seeing ice crystals that day!
Awesome never knew
I didn't either. Sure was fun to learn about a new spot with really different stuff than what I'm used to.
Hey you’re getting close to my area! Let me know if you’re ever near St. Louis. There’s more agate and quartz around here than you’ve ever seen. 😂 maybe I’d be interested in your opinion. I haven’t been to Douglas lake yet but it’s definitely on my list. The root beer colored one was especially interesting to me. I wonder if they’re similar to the root beer druse I find. I was sort of that direction today in southern Illinois. We found some nice purple and yellow fluorite. I’m going to have to send you a package sometime. You’ll want to check out Missouri. If I’m ever up north near Michigan I’ll let you know.
What's the weather like this time of year? I'd like to do an annual trip to somewhere warmer every winter. I'm not missing anything in Michigan this time of the year, and it adds variety to my channel.
@@MichiganRocksthe weather this time of year is a total gamble. Generally we’re warmer than Michigan but we still get those arctic blasts and usually get below zero temperatures for several days or weeks in January or February. I’d say early April or late October is probably the best time weather wise
@@dustinfindsrocks I'll keep that in mind, Dustin.
That was something new and different and looked like fun. It looked like the diamonds stood out fairly well as everything else was pretty much brownish colored. I understand that they find pretty decent geodes down in the Bloomington, Indiana area. I don’t know if you traveled through there or not.
We hunted rocks in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia.
The diamonds glinted in the sun when the sun was out, but it was only partially sunny that day. Dave was really good at finding them.
It’s freezing 30 degrees
Back in Michigan -1
It's not -1 in Michigan now or before I left. It was colder while I was gone though.
@@MichiganRocksweird because it was 5 down here in Ohio for the week before you uploaded it. idk when you did this but I’m guessing January it’s been very cold. now It’s 40 out.
@@dailthegoat799 I was in the south from Jan 13-20. It was cold that week.
You’re in my neck of the woods! Drive south about 45 minutes and I’ll take you out on a garnet hunt.
We got garnets later in the week. They were almandine garnets and they're in the Lot-O now. I'm not sure that they'll polish at all, so far it's just making a rusty mess. Is that the kind of garnets you're talking about, or do you know where to find the better kind? I'm not even sure what the better ones are called.
@@MichiganRocks Yeah we’re flush with almandine garnets down here. I haven’t had luck with them in the tumbler. They sometimes break apart and the facet corners get contoured away. They say Oxalic acid is the way to go. It’s pretty nasty stuff though so if you do try it, be careful. Hope you had fun down here.
@@Chris-ox7qx I have some oxalic acid in a crockpot in the driveway right now! I've been treating some other rocks I found on my trip. What's the procedure?
@@MichiganRocks I’ve never actually used it. I’ve had a bottle sitting here on my shelf (and a bucket of garnets) for over a year but haven’t attempted it yet. The folks that run a nearby garnet mine told be about the stuff but again, I haven’t tried it yet. Here’s a link to an article I found: chasingthestarsbook.blogspot.com/2012/02/using-oxalic-acid-to-clean-idaho-star.html. I’ll look through my files and see if I find anything else.
What Fun! Do you happen to know when they open up the water way? I’m hoping to hit the area on the way back north in March.😊
Nope, I don't know. Sorry.
In March the levels are historically about 3/4 full. About 20 feet higher than when we visited. Levels are 950s in these videos. Summer is 990s
@@TN-Ann Thanks Ann!
@@TN-AnnThank you Ann! Would we still be able to find something at that level? is it worth the trip?
I want to see that quartz when it’s tumbled maybe put it in a rocks in a box episode because it looks very familiar to what I found up here
I'm not going to tumble these for a couple of reasons. First, they're tiny and there wouldn't be anything left of them if I tumbled them. Also, the cool part about these is the natural crystal shape. I'd lose that and just have little, round, clear stones if I tumbled them.
@@MichiganRocks I didn’t mean the diamond is meant the quartz rock at 9:09
@@dailthegoat799 Oh, ok, that makes more sense.
What’s kind of Tumblr? Would you recommend for a beginner? As well what kind of products work best?
I like Lortone rotary tumblers. I started with the Lortone 33B and I think that was an excellent choice. I still use those barrels on my homemade tumbler all the time.
The Rock Shed and Kingsley North both sell Lortone, although they are in short supply everywhere. Those two businesses have really good prices and sell excellent grit too.

What’s wrong with your hand?😂😂😂😂
That was a really lumpy hand.
One odd ball question of mine is if you noticed any difference in hardness of them?
I haven't done anything with these and probably won't do anything with them. Since they're quartz, I would expect them to be seven on the Mohs scale.
Thank you for the reply! I figured it was worth a shot in the dark, really didn't think they would but...lol.@@MichiganRocks
What is the hardness of the “diamonds”?
Since these are actually just quartz crystals, they'd be seven on the Moh's scale.
So Douglas Diamonds are Quartz?
Yes. Double terminated quartz crystals.
I live in Sevierville and have been wanting to go hunt on Douglas Lake. This video definitely gives me the motivation to get going.
Only five days until the weekend!
Dos it cost to go hear I live like a our away
Nope, completely free.
Sir me from Pakistan
A land of Aquamarine,Emaralalds and Ruby..I want to share some videos of stones...
I just went to your channel and don't see any videos. I think you should make some.
AMAZING!!! God's creative, intricate design - - how can one NOT be amazed that something so tiny did not happen by accident? No coincidences in God's economy!
Yep, God does good work.
This is the first video I have been able to share with our great grandson. He got so excited about the diamonds that he showed his mom! Dinner was on the table, so we had to stop before we got to Anne's section on making the ring. We have a date tomorrow to watch the whole thing. I plan on showing him some of your rockhounding trips so he will begin to understand that buying rocks in a bag is nothing compared to finding rocks in God's grand creation. I am pretty sure he will be as inspired by your videos as I have been, and when they move closer, we will have many adventures along many waters in the years to come, if the Lord tarries. You have made a big impact on our family. Thank you!@@MichiganRocks
@@maryseaman312 I love hearing things like that! I can't wait until my grandson is old enough to go on some longer rock hunts. Actuall, I can wait. I'm enjoying him at the age he's at right now, but there's other stuff to look forward to in the future too.
oh, yes! Enjoy each step of his journey! Take nothing for granted. All too soon, he will be "on his own" ... the love you share with him now with your attention and words if wisdom will make a big difference in his life later.@@MichiganRocks
There's diamonds in them there hills 😂🎉🤙🏼💚🏵️. Try the Crater of diamonds in Arkansas 😉🤞
Yeah, real diamonds there. That has always struck me as a place that would be pretty boring for most people, most of the time. Of course, if you actually found a diamond, it would be awesome. Sort of like playing the lottery, I guess.
Nice, great finds?
Neat experience 😊
I wished I would have known you were down here. I live just 60+/- miles from there. Me and a friend of mine have been meaning to go down and look for "Douglas Diamonds"
You should go check them out. They were fun to find.
Love this! Very interesting and exciting to find these! Loved the ring 😊😊😊
It was fun to watch Ann make a ring right from scratch like that.
Cool finds! I know a place in idaho where you can find plenty of geodes.
We didn't take any of these geodes home to open them, but I got the impression they weren't the best geodes out there. Idaho is a really long way to go for geodes though.
Those Douglas Diamonds are really great because they seem to be "diamond shaped" on the ground!! Very nice Rob!!
Yes, the shape and the transparency of some of them is really great.
Ahhhh! Got it!
👍
Where do they fall on the mohs scale?
These are quartz crystals, so they should be seven on the Mohs scale.
Hello Rob. We are getting the stain glass cutter to cut grooves in stones where do you get that bit to cut the groove?
If you look in the description of any of my videos, you'll find a link to my Amazon storefront. I have it listed in there.

Thank you, I really enjoyed making it and can see ways to make the next one better🎉
@@TN-Ann Have you worn it yet?
I love diamonds! So sparkly and gorgeous! Thanks for sharing! 😊
It was nice to see the silver smith creating her wares. Beautiful little crystals. Hope it warned up for you.
it warmed up after I got back to Michigan. I think the temps in Michigan have been better or about the same both before and after my trip. Michigan was colder while I was in the south though.
Very cool! Love little crystals, especially double terminated. Pretty nice area, too❤
I'd like to see the lake when it's full of water.
Well there's something I didn't know about Pigeon Forge area: diamonds. I visited that area in late 80s. The rocks in Cades Cove & the Smokies are beautiful. Have you considered tumbling those diamonds, or are they too small? And yes, it was ice cold up there given the weather patterns. Be safe, God bless.
No, I won't tumble them. The best part about them is the shape and if I tumbled them, they'd just end up rounded but shiny.
Awesome finds!!!
How fun!!!
Thanks
I think if you are judging on shape, yours is absolutely the best, hands down, but there were lots of choices for the most clear
Ann found the one that she made the ring into. That one was pretty close to perfect.
how fun! my bucket list is getting longer and longer 😂
The nice thing about these is that you don't need a very deep bucket.
Just for the record, it's Sevier County, not Sevierville County. I'm only an hour away from this lake.
Well, she was pretty close! Thanks for the correction.
That’s funny. You should hear people try to say Shelbyville (TN)! Ya can always tell they aren’t from around these parts 🤪
My Dad grew up in Middleville NY where they find "Herkimer" diamonds. Middleville sits in the township of Herkimer.
That’s not too far where I lived for a long time. I still have family up there. Was thinking about making a trip this summer
Those are much more famous than these, and bigger, from what I've seen. They'd be fun to hunt someday.
@@MichiganRocks some are much bigger.
I’m in Tennessee!!! I want to go “shopping”
Shopping for diamonds?
@@MichiganRocks going out finding rocks is like shopping for me! I didn’t know we had anything like that here in TN! We live near Tims’s Ford so I wonder if there any ‘diamonds’ down our way?? I have found beautiful stones right on our property…geodes and fossils, some blue/gray with banding! Who knew we had things like that here???? I learn so much from you!!! Thank you for great useful info!!!!
@@PatiD13 Now that you know, you'll have to go shopping on that beach. Just pick a warmer day.
@@MichiganRocks I will!! Already asked hubby if we can plan a day to go out to the Ford. They drop the water level there too. We get beautiful geodes on our land that are solid white and can see through them when a flashlight is put under them. I think they are technically called some kind of water geode??? They are solid with no cavity of crystals. They are everywhere. Not sure how to upload a pic of one though. I plan on leaving them whole and polishing the whole thing since they are already round.
@@PatiD13 It's weird that they call them geodes if they're not hollow.
