- David, Sam, and Rob head to the beach between Christmas and the new year. We found Petoskey stones, puddingstones, the biggest chain coral any of us had ever seen, and a few other oddities.

Productive day for 3 rock hounds. I always like when you do a wheel polisher segment.
I think it adds a lot to the video too, it's just not practical with harder rocks, so I'm much more likely to do it when there are Petoskey Stones on the beach.

Congrats on Michigan whooping Washington. I may be an Oregon Duck fan, but I must admit that "Michigan Rocks". At least they did against the Washington Dogs. I hope you and your loved ones have a great year.

David's analysis is a good initial one. From the video, it looks like a quartzite, but I would have scratched it to make sure it wasn't marble or some other odd rock.
The red spots/white halos could be a number of things related to metamorphism, garnet being just one of them.
I have never seen such a distinct red spot in the middle like that. If that hadn't been so big, I would have liked to take it home to remove the red centers for a better look.

Very cool!! I started digging a hole in the woods here on my property in midland Michigan were there are boulders and we've found the prehistoric Michigan sea layer and are finding really cool old ocean fossils and very interesting rocks
Limestone bedrock is some interesting stuff, isn't it?

We were there for about five hours that day. It got dark so we had to come home.
Oh my.....I wish you would have taken home the garnet rock and slabbed it.... it might have made a nice pendant.
Way too big for my little saw, but it would have been interesting to try to get that possible garnet out of the bigger rock.
I can't believe you left the one at 12:40! That looks like a big chunk of the chalcedony (sometimes called oolitic agate) that I find around my house, but the piece you found was huge. It usually has some agate-like qualities such as tubes and banding (not really agate banding) somewhere in the rock. And it polishes like agate. If you run across one like that again, consider taking it home and cutting it in half. It might contain a nice surprise.
I did wonder what it would look like slabbed, but as a whole the rock was sort of a big conglomerate. I don't think it was all the same material. I have never seen anything like it. As a whole rock, it was sort of ugly to me, but the red parts looked good. If it had been all made out of that same red material, it would have come home with me. Maybe if you visit next summer it will still be rolling around on the beach.

I'm sort of a fair weather hounder. If I have the choice I go on a nice day. This was the only day we could really go, though, so the weather was just a really nice gift from God.

I'm ok with alternating between blizzards, which was really fun last year, and nice days, which produced great rocks this year.

Sam's chain coral was my favorite rock of the day, but I really liked that Petoskey/horn coral combo that David found too.

That was an unusual banded chert. It was much lighter colored than usual. The setting sun made the color look strange in the video, but I think it will look good tumbled.

Yes, that Petoskey with the horn coral was one of my favorite rocks of the day.

Wow, this year's video really is different from last year's video! It certainly allowed you to find more nice rocks. The pudding stones and the coral fossil you polished were the stars of the show. Thanks for letting us tag along.
Better rocks this year, but I wouldn't change last year. That was a really fun day too, even if we didn't come home with much. David did manage to find a pretty good Petoskey in that storm last year though.

David is a geologist, although he works with soil borings rather than rocks. But it's great that my daughter was thoughtful enough to marry someone who can educate me about my hobby.

Petoskey stones are pretty easy to polish, especially on my cab machine.

Me too. I find Petoskeys paired with other corals from time to time, but not usually a horn coral that nice.

I remember the rock hunt from last year that was brutal ! You had a beautiful day this time. I think you found the rock with that panic button at 4:00. All of the finds were really interesting.
We remained calm and didn't need to use the panic button. This year we had a beautiful day for a rock hunt, but last year will be one that we remember for years.

I think that first really nice little puddingstone I found might have been the best of the summer. Small, but packed with jasper. The redder, the better.
I went crazy on Van’s beach and scored a ton of Leland Blues last week. The week prior I went to Lake Huron an hour north of Detroit and found my first Puddings. Both long drives from Kalamazoo. Can’t beat this weather!

12:36 "Kind of Chalcedony" Rock, I was hoping you would have taken it home and sliced it open. Find a ton of these in Central Wisconsin, with that nice fleshy pink and reds with ghost white + coloring. They are interesting, and sometimes hide a hollow center with a quartz and/or Chalcedony surprise. Closest guess on ID I have come up with is a larger, malformed specimen of Paddock Jasper. Amazing works, thank you for sharing!

It was weird to be wading in the lake (in waders) this time of the year. The sun felt good too.
Very nice rockhounding experience indeed. Here in Texas today, it was sunny and up around 70. I picked up a whole bunch of fantastic moss, plume and pom-pom agates along with some pretty blue agates and nice brightly colored jaspers.

I was on Lake Michigan on Dec. 28th it was marvelous! I didn't find much, except my sanity 😊 I bought the decoy gloves like you use. They worked very well to keep my hands warm and dry.
I like those gloves. It would be really cold without them.

David lives four hours away, so we can't get out as often as we'd like to. I'll get him out when I can, though.

Yep, completely different weather. Last year was fun, but it was nice to be able to pick the rocks up without chiseling them out first.

It was in the upper thirties and sunny for the second part of the day, so it wasn't really cold at all.

Yeah, that was a beauty!
You used to be able to collect Michigan garnet by the old Mt. Shasta Bar near Michigamme. A lot of it was an olive to black fairly large crystal, but there was red there, too.
I wanted to go there, but I was told it's private and they don't like people in the old mine anymore. I think those garnets are actually pseudomorphs of garnets, where the garnet gets replaced by another mineral (not sure which one) but the shape of the original garnet crystal remains.
i took a class from Western in the early 90's when I collected there. I am assuming we had permission. Seems like yesterday...but a lot has changed. I will have to hunt my rock gardens in the spring to find them! I did get some pseudomorphs and some red garnet there.

You need to get an ice fishing hole skimmer, for your rock scoop. Much larger and the metal ones are quite sturdy
I don't like the big, round shape of those. I know mine is not great for bigger rocks, but I like the pointed spoon for getting in between bigger rocks to scoop out smaller rocks.

The petoskey stone w/ another fossil shined up really nice. Will u be tumbling the pudding stones & the banded chert?
Several people have commented that I should have slabbed that rock. Maybe I should have, but it's too late now.
I don't know if I'll be polishing any of the rocks you mentioned. David took the puddingstones to display in his office at work and didn't mention me tumbling the banded chert. I'm sure Sam will tumble his though.

Happy New Year! Been meaning to ask and keep forgetting. You have previously commented that you don’t pick up granite as it doesn’t polish great. I know that’s true since I have tried to polish to. I scratch my head here. Everyone loves their shiney granite countertops and I love mine too. What do he countertop folks do different?
They don't tumble it. I don't know much about countertops, but from what I've heard, a lot of counters that are called "granite" are not actually granite. Even if it is, I would expect granite that is polished by other methods to do better than granite that is tumbled. Puddingstones are like that too. They turn out pretty good when cabbing them, but always have little pits all over when tumbled.
That strange-looking rock looks like the petrified innards of a bird..
That's the first time I've heard a rock compared to bird innards, I think.

My wife is the sportball fan. She's very happy. If there's any sport I'm at least a little interested in, it's Michigan football. I went to all the games when I was a student there.
I have never sand blasted a rock, or anything else for that matter.

I didn't time it, but about 15-20 minutes. They go fast if they don't have any really bad low spots. I did have to grind down part of the horn coral side a bit or it would have been quicker.

No, Allison and David spent Christmas at his parents' house this year. They didn't get here until the 28th and we went to the beach on the 29th.
I would have checked the coral at 2 mins for fluorescence.

I brought some pieces home from just south of Petosky. My son cut one in half. I turned the LW UV on it and it was blues and other colors. Are the rocks on the beaches coming from the depths of the lake or being washed out of the land and into the lake?
I think both. They also move down the shore with the waves. That's called "longshore drift".
Ok, I need recommendations. I am going to be in Bay City in a few weeks, do you recommend any beaches there for good rock hunting?

@@rockaholic4388 I have been there a couple times in the colder seasons. I did okay both times, but I think that place gets really over hunted. I saw lots of people both times and the weather was cold. I'm really not sure what the better spot is.

I have never been to Utah, and I'll be in Michigan in 8 weeks. I wish I could recommend something, but I can't.
Some of the rocks you tossed back I would have kept. Then again, I don't have a collection like you do. The Petoskey you polished is gorgeous. What do you plan to do with it.? Nice hunt
That's David's rock. He has a small collection on the kitchen windowsill and some on a shelf in the bathroom. He was also talking about finding some rocks to put in his office at work, so I'm not sure where it will end up.
The only problem with it is that it's not great for display. One side is mostly Petoskey and the other side is horn coral. I offered to cut it in half so he could display both sides at once, but he didn't think that was a good idea, probably because it wasn't.
Have you tried to hunt for "yooperlights" at that location?
Yes, but I had no luck. A friend of mine has looked there a couple of times with no finds either. I have looked at one other location on Lake Huron too. So far, nothing.
@MichiganRocks I'd figure there always a chance especially in that spot not many people hunt that location on Lake Huron in that section of the bay... but if theres glacial rocks, the sodalites could be there. I wish I had access to look there but its all private..

Not this time. We had to cross private property to get to the beach. I don't want to encourage people to trespass by revealing the location.

I live in Westhamptonbeach on long Island and I find so much indian artifacts and quartzite and just do many different kinds it doesn't make sense! I was kinda raised in Missouri, Fort Leonard Wood my dad retired Sgt. MG. It was his life! "HIS" any way I would love some help with this area! I've heard rumors of apartments going on top of this area! It will all be lost!!! That would be horrible 😢 I have a brain injury I died 2 in my car accident I flipped my Honda odyssey 8 tires and rolled it 3 times on its side I was passing an off duty police officer and he brought me back 2 times I was in a coma for 2 1/2 weeks on a respirator and broke c-3-4-5&6 and cracked my head from ear to ear and had internal bleeding and they cut my bladder by accident oops

If you pull one of the nails from that wreck likely nautical history buffs could tell you how old it is
It's illegal to take anything from shipwrecks here. They're pretty well documented except that I don't know which wreck this came from.
