I always put 12 inches of sand around the water pipe and put tape above the sand. Never worry about rocks puncturing the line and creating a save zone for anyone digging in the yard at a later date. This is actually code here.
Perfectionist? No, you sir are a PROFESSIONAL!. So good to see a tradesman who takes pride in his work. It's the little things like filling in hollows under pipework/conduit that seperate the average tradesmen from the good tradesmen. My boss taught us to do the same thing when trenching in services - makes a huge difference to the life of the conduit.
Whoever did that crawl space lining and insulation is a fucking god. And deserves a raise 19:14

Drilling seismic it i hated getting a new hammer. It was always a lot heavier, and we had to handle it quite a bit. They also seem to smash harder when the internals are worn..

why not put hard surface welds around by the bit chuck to save from wear from the rock, we do HDD and thats what we do to save our hammers.
I don’t live in a place where anyone uses well water and I truly enjoy your videos, I think it’s very interesting to see the process of digging for the well and how you guys know where to dig, how deep and what the rock is doing. I guess it's the OCD in me, but you sitting on the "over the pond" side in your truck is odd! When you change to selfie on the phone, you get a mirror effect, so writing and your driving position is reversed. I believe Android or Apple camera apps have a setting for this somewhere in the camera settings.

Have you looked into a shop that does spray welding? It add steel to worn out shafts etc. So those old hammers could be renewed.

Is there any particular reason that y’all use PVC rather than a type A PEX?
So the hammering action is all done below the surface? For some reason I thought it was transferred down the rods? Either way, whoever invented it is way smarter than I am 😂
How long did it take from start to finish? They are drilling our well for like 3 weeks now and I cant imagine what they are doing 😅 the depth has already been reached, it’s about 95m / 310 feet but they are still building it out. It’s through a contractor so they don’t report to me, was just wondering..
600ft takes us 2 days. But we are air rotary. Sounds like you have a old cable machine drilling your well. They are old technology and drill slow, 20-40ft a day.
Question. Is a capacitor unit not needed any more? My well pit has a box with a capacitor setup.

No pitless adapter interesting
My well is 100 ft deep and cased and capped on the bottom. In fact I have two of them about 300 ft or so apart. It was drilled by the same man about 3 or 4 years earlier. $21 a foot cased with 5 inch inside when they were drilled. I used left over stuff from when I built my house and built a bricked well insulated well house. It has to stay 0 or so for two or three days before it even needs any heat. I have a Y in the ceiling outlet and use two 125 watt heat lamps. I use two just in case one lamp was to burn out. i have a remote thermometer in the well house so I can monitor the temperature from the house. My water level is 40 ft in the hottest part of the summer and they both flow over 20 gpm. Only thing I should have done different is put the well outside the pump house and use a pitless adapter and run water to the well house. It would make pulling the pump much easier when I need to. Also I used a 240 volt 1/2 hp 10 gpm pump. I wish I had used a 120 volt one. It would make using a generator easier. I have a replacement pump I got a few years ago just in case and it is a 120 volt.
There is nothing wrong with being a perfectionist and making everything look perfect. I love it.
What does the hammer do? I’ve seen drills etc on the ends of some of your drilling pipes but the hammers look blunt on the ends. What do they hammer?
A casing that is sized to allow the use of a sounding wire without removing the pump costs more, but saves money 💰 later and allows proper maintenance; static / pumping / drawdown monitoring along with pump “megging” and amperage draw testing. Retired 30 year water system operator. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔. Do you disinfect / flush and sample for HPC and Coliform bacteria?

Or did you mean it would be a positive thing? Thanks again! I was considering a DIY shallow well to irrigate with. I made a manual hollow drill out of my son’s old basketball goal. Used a 3000 psi pressure washer… I was walking through dense red clay pretty easy. Then, BAM!! I hit a solid layer of rock!😂 so much for that project. I guess I’ll leave the well drilling to guys like you who know how to do it!👍 Great job BTW!!

Hey I've been Watching you videos for a while now love the content who knew well and plumbing would be so fascinating. On question though I'm in southeast Missouri and it's more common around here to see pitless adaptors on our wells. Why do you all just come out the top of the well instead of using pitless adaptors.

Would it be possible to hard face the hammer casing like they do for excavation buckets? May get more life out of the hammer before needing rebuilding. Line spots follow standard color coding: yellow=gas, red=electric, green=sewer, blue=water, orange=communication (telephone/fiber), purple=irrigation/reclaimed water. Interesting that you guys are putting in a well but there is a water line spot.
Not very bright... It' like you see a completely unrelated concept and assume it applies everywhere you wish. Why not hard face your tires...
Is your pipe dope petroleum based?
My buddies family used to drill in our area, his dad told me there is a layer of rock then a layer of shifting mud/rock that you have to get through and cased or when you come back the next day it'll be closed in again. He said to many drillers from outside the area don't know this and come back the next day to find out their hole is filled
Great that you took the time to repair the vapor barrier, that JUST shows that you care about your reputation that many others dont care about, it can be the little things that show shows your level of work ethic

When i worked in seismic drilling our boss would have guys steal hammers from the client. Oilfield booms leave little traceability when things move fast. Our shop owner would get the carbide out of our worn bits for scrap. When we moved shops i loaded about 5 brand new hammers on the trailer not knowing that our company stole Them. Easy 20k worth of stolen property i unknowingly hauled across the country.
Do you fellas ever install pitless adaptors? I live in Interior Alaska and our pipes are buried at minimum six feet with a pitless adaptor. We also run heat trace with the pipe. Not uncommon to run two lines(one main/one bleed line) to bleed water back into the well. Adjust the flow with a ball valve.
I know I've seen him work on a system with a pitless adapter, but I'm not sure if they ever installed one themselves
It's crazy the amount of protection you have for that pipe. Heat plus giving it a way to have a constant flow without wasting water.
@@arthurr8670 The heat trace is only for thawing out a frozen line. Power is way too expensive to run heat trace continuously.

Growing up in a area that has 90% city water and 60% city sewer (in the city and towns around me) it's crazy seeing these wells. I feel like I would be scared to drink the water 😂

I'm from NE Ohio..been having well issues for last couple weeks..water will just go out on us. If I turn the pump off for a few hours and turn it back on the pressure in the house will go up to 50-60 psi and hold until I use any substantial amount of water (Shower, Dishes, etc...) it will go out and I have to repeat the process. We have replaced the Tank, Pressure switch, and Check valve. The pump was replaced in 2018 and is a high end deep well pump. It's been very frustrating to say the least. Could it be a Crack in the pipe connected to the pump? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I wonder if Abom could spray weld those hammer cases? Maybe with some hardend tool steel to ware longer?

@@ShainAndrews He shows that the old hammers arent bad so much that the outer case has wore down and is thin, risking it breaking. Im wondering if they can be spray welded back up to correct thickness and also done with a hardened steel that doesnt ware as fast as standard steel.

I have a question. How could I make my water pressure stronger. Like it is ok but I feel it's needs better pressure especially in the shower. Do I like turn the bladder tank up or something. Nice work. Why don’t the houses have full basements? They all seem to have crawl spaces.
Almost all of alaska is permafrost, and muskeg till you get deep enough to hit rock. Yet there are places so easy that anyone can find water and really good water at very low levels as in say fifty feet that is not surface water but truly fresh nice clean water. Some are quite prolific and produce high volume yet say thirty feet give and take, you could drill to china. So given its at a low level, we still go down to hardpan and then run casing into the earth for some good distance and if no water is found at the lower level, they just cut into that casing and let it fill up the pipe so that it will pass inspection. Cristal clean water tested and not just someone guessing. I make a fool of myself and say that water is different in some ways in different places when it comes to finding and making it clean and clear, and a high volume.
I like to put a bypass on the water filter. It's nice to have water available inside the house to clean the canister(s) when changing the filter cartridge(s). I use big 20's in my house and change them once per year.
I find it amazing how you &those in your field do this..we live in suburbs. How do you itemize for the bill for work done?
it would be nice if that hammer had the outside sleeve designed where you could take that outside sleeve off and flip it upside down and get a lot more use out of it.

Question:
I’m trying to design a set up to work. I was given an old style galvanized 80 gal tank with an AVC. and I have a gumdfos on 1” black roll at 100’. Will this tank operate without some kind of a bleeder valve in the Black roll? Where/when can air come into the tank when it cycles?
Those systems typically have a bleeder tee about 5 ft from the top of the well in the drop pipe.
For long term use it would need to have it, but you can run the system without it & just use a air compressor and add a few minutes of air to your galvanized tank once you've allowed some water to enter the tank. You need it 1/3 full of water as to trap the water in the tank. Then pump it up to 15-20 psi of air & itll operate fine for a few days before you need to add air again
@@h2omechanic thanks for the info. so to make it permanent I’m thinking that I can connect a 5 foot or so length of PVC down from the well head with a barbed adapter on the bottom that connects the pvc to the to the black roll. That way I can can put in a bleeder valve on the pvc and that should probably work.

It's at the midday of its life. If its metal / galvanized casing, it has a 50 year life span before it starts to rust away & allow surface water in the well.

What is the lubricant that you guys put on the drill connections?
Looks like copper coat used in automotive engine repair sometimes.
Also, do you ever get cross threading on the connections?
