That begs the question: Most real-life religious orders have female and male-enclosed religious orders (Catholicism, Nuns), so where is the female representation in Warhammer? There is another side of the Imperium, known as the Sisters of Battle. This order is known to be more powerful in many regards than Space Marines but has not had nearly as much written about it. They are nearly a one-for-one for the Marines in ideals, use in battle, etc, but next to nothing is published about them, especially in the video gaming space. Here's the thesis of my thoughts: I think it is most helpful to identify the correct issue. That issue is not the lack of women Space Marines but rather the lack of writing, media, and representation of the women groups that actually exist.

They are considered angelic. A driving theme in 40K is that humanity is actually on its decline. We cannot produce anywhere near the level of tech they used to have. Sisters of Battle, Sisters of Silence, the guard, Lotara Sarrin, Commander Shadowsun, Alizebeth Bequin, and so many more strong examples of women in Warhammer. There's no women space marines because the emperor never figured out how to make the procedure work, they always died on the table when attempts where made. This is presumably because it requires using "geneseed" derived from a primarch and therefore the emperor. As far as I understand it the in-universe reason for all space marines being men is because they're effectively weaker, crudely made clones of the emperor himself, and the emperor got absolutely rekt before he figured out how to make the surgeries work on women, if it's possible that they ever could. I'm not going to throw shade at you, the lore is deep, convoluted, often contradictory and sometimes ancient, there's loads of shit I don't know. The real problem IMO is that GW leans WAY too hard on space marines when they're only a tiny slice of what the universe offers, likely for model making profit and marketing reasons but it leads to folks like you (that aren't way too invested in the scattered bits of lore) getting the idea that female space marines would make the series better when it would just weaken already shaky lore further without offering anything that wasn't already there for the taking before. If you see it as a question of women not being allowed to be powerful enough compared to men, Saint Celestine is a woman who has risen to the status of a demigod, and she can quite easily wipe out space marines in huge numbers, plus she's immortal so when she does eventually go down in combat it's just a matter of time until she pops back up again. Yvraine is an Eldar woman who's so powerful an entire evil society of tried to torture/murder her in an arena for their amusement and she literally just got stronger. She brought one of the Primarch back out of a coma because she thought it would be strategically important in an upcoming battle, because she also knows the future. We dont need woman space marines. There are reasons and u dont know what u r talking about when it comes to combat effectiveness. Woman with combat sports cannot compete with men. Its a biological reality and why the separation exists at all. Woman can be good fighters. Woman can beat men. But we r not talking about exceptions. But the strongest ufc female in the ring with the strongest male ufc fighter they lose every time. Look at the athletic records. Woman's records are thermostat always worst then men's records. Now talking about military , the us navy reduced female standards so they could have more serve. I know cuz i was in. Men are more expendable then woman. Look into the process to become a space marine. Millions die just in The initiation phases let alone the augmentation process. And then consider one of the key points of forming space marine is the gene seed I implantation process. All of the primarchs are male ( the genetic father's of each space marine legion) so the gene seed is incompatable with females just by the fact that they aren't male. But that doesn't mean woman don't exist and can't be bad ass. The sisters of silence and the sisters of battle are entirely female factions. Stop asking for things when u aren't even a fan originally. We like it the way it is. U want to make another new all female faction? Fantastic. Don't change existing lore.

for me, the issue is the attempts to undo established lore. "there have always been female custodes" is alot more infuriating when we can point to the Codex entries that say otherwise than "Hey, Cawl figured out how to make female space marines, also here's a sickass new grav tank"

getting female space marines would be nice, if only implemented correctly, due to the enormous lore within warhammer 40K (200+ books), to ''retcon'' something into the setting is IMO wrong.
But if they introduce female astartes into the setting, it has to be ''new'', made new into the ''modern'' 41st millenium. And they can be as kickass/badass as you want them to be, hell, even make a new female ''matriarch/primarch?'' just don't mess with previous lore.
Im going to shoot from the hip here, 90-95% of 40K fans are male, get representations for everyone, but focus on your core audience.

If you have read basically any lore you would know that in the human side of things alone, we have two female only factions vs 1 male only, and those 2 female only factions are amongst the strongest fighters and have some of the most powerful abilities in the entire setting (sisters of battle can perform literal miracles and sisters of silence are blanks which means their sheer presence makes literal demons die and are perfect anti pskyer soldiers)
As for the rest of the imperium, women feature prominently in every aspect of human society, military and political. From female high lords of terra, inquisitiors and rogue traders, down to generals, admirals, squad leaders etc.

Sisters of Battle, Sisters of Silence, the guard, Lotara Sarrin, Commander Shadowsun, Alizebeth Bequin, and so many more strong examples of women in Warhammer. There's no women space marines because the emperor never figured out how to make the procedure work, they always died on the table when attempts where made. This is presumably because it requires using "geneseed" derived from a primarch and therefore the emperor. As far as I understand it the in-universe reason for all space marines being men is because they're effectively weaker, crudely made clones of the emperor himself, and the emperor got absolutely rekt before he figured out how to make the surgeries work on women, if it's possible that they ever could.
I'm not going to throw shade at you, the lore is deep, convoluted, often contradictory and sometimes ancient, there's loads of shit I don't know. The real problem IMO is that GW leans WAY too hard on space marines when they're only a tiny slice of what the universe offers, likely for model making profit and marketing reasons but it leads to folks like you (that aren't way too invested in the scattered bits of lore) getting the idea that female space marines would make the series better when it would just weaken already shaky lore further without offering anything that wasn't already there for the taking before.
If you see it as a question of women not being allowed to be powerful enough compared to men, Saint Celestine is a woman who has risen to the status of a demigod, and she can quite easily wipe out space marines in huge numbers, plus she's immortal so when she does eventually go down in combat it's just a matter of time until she pops back up again. Yvraine is an Eldar woman who's so powerful an entire evil society of tried to torture/murder her in an arena for their amusement and she literally just got stronger. She brought one of the Primarch back out of a coma because she thought it would be strategically important in an upcoming battle, because she also knows the future. Trust when I say this dude, female space marines are beyond not necessary.

We dont need woman space marines. There are reasons and u dont know what u r talking about when it comes to combat effectiveness. Woman with combat sports cannot compete with men. Its a biological reality and why the separation exists at all. Woman can be good fighters. Woman can beat men. But we r not talking about exceptions. But the strongest ufc female in the ring with the strongest male ufc fighter they lose every time. Look at the athletic records. Woman's records are thermostat always worst then men's records. Now talking about military , the us navy reduced female standards so they could have more serve. I know cuz i was in. I had to do an 8 minute 2 mile and Woman in my same age group only had to do 13 minutes to pass the pt test. Now looking at sf operating units, woman are currently serving in the green berets at 8PERCENT of the total operating forces . Nevermind that there are no woman currently in ANY tier one special forces group (navy seals delta etc) and that's not for lack of trying. Woman try and they fail to meet the standards. Its bad enough that the idea of lowering the standards has been floated and that should never be an option in the first place. And with space marines in fiction it's as simple as the age old answer. Men are more expendable then woman. Look into the process to become a space marine. Millions die just in The initiation phases let alone the augmentation process. And then consider one of the key points of forming space marine is the gene seed I implantation process. All of the primarchs are male ( the genetic father's of each space marine legion) so the gene seed is incompatable with females just by the fact that they aren't male. But that doesn't mean woman don't exist and can't be bad ass. The sisters of silence and the sisters of battle are entirely female factions. Stop asking for things when u aren't even a fan originally. We like it the way it is. U want to make another new all female faction? Fantastic. Don't change existing lore.
