Music might be the only artform I can think of were you can set out to make something deliberately unpleasant and still somehow end up with something charming and unironically enjoyable. Like the audio equivalent of creepy-cute.
10:12 You could put those exact words, including rhythm of speach, pronunciation and all that, into Ben Levins mouth and I wouldn't notice. Very similar way of expression.
So a follow-up: none of these really make Lydian sound bad, rather they seem to try to sound bad in spite of being in Lydian by reaching to things that aren't inherent in Lydian (except maybe Adam and to a lesser degree M=W). Try to simplify it a bit. Just use one piano, one guitar or one Game Boy and really focus on the weakness of the Lydian.
Rewatched this vid a couple of times: I instantly crushed on Tyler's (musiciswin) and Justice Cow's songs. Then after 2-3 more listens I really loved Amy's and Adam's songs for completely different reasons. I feel that Shubh's song was the most "ugly": some of the riffs were really great but then got torn apart by the odd timing. Really got you out of the groove. Honestly I'm not saying it was bad (you know you are great), but in terms of "ugly" I found the feeling that you could never get "in to" the riffs/grooves... "blue-ballish", frustrating and ugly ! I loved Justice Cow's song 100% for the vocals. Everything about them was great! I loved Amy's song for the arrangement and the mood. Absolutely sublime! I loved Adam's song for amazing bass sounds, the odd timings, the very well rounded composition. It was very physical with harsh bass sounds and the clashing notes! And lastly I would like to applaud Tyler for his amazing riffs, a really odd but satisfying solo and that tone tho!
God, this is amazing, every track is beautiful. I know the goal was "ugly," but maybe it's suggestive, like "ugly" is in the eye of the beholder. Or... In the ear of the behearer?

Shubh's is just a genuine jam and I'd gladly listen to a full version on purpose.
Holy shit, whatever the fuck Aimee Nolte did evoked such a visceral response in me. Like, it literally made my eyebrows rise, my skin prickle and my head hurt. Awesome!
Adam: I once wrote a song called "Drunk"
Shubh: Hold about 20 shots of vodka for this feel
Justice Cow: I have summoned the void in assistance of my work Adam.
Aimee: I started a vocal harmony chant cult around this void
Music is Win: I have found the nasty aesthetic and it's spider
Adam: Ugly is fun, especially with bass face
I'm enthralled by everyone's approach to this. Amazing talent here.
The dissonance in “Lydian you ugly” really reminded me of “Construção” by Chico Buarque. Great video!
Great taste on music, my friend
It reminded me a LOT of Gazelle Twin's discography. So good.
When Shubh was describing what he did, and how he did it I was like:"Shit, dude really went the extra mile on that one".
"So, what's your taste in music?"
"You wouldn't get it"
Shubh’s song sounded like he was taking us on a journey through outer space
Shubh's definitely gave me those tingles on my neck. Gives me a heavy progressive rock vibe and I love progressive rock.
It's my favorite one!
I love Aimee Nolte's piece.
If Lydian can consistently sound like that, I'd get into it.
You could do what Aimee Nolte did with literally any scale and any mode. Just focus on the half and whole step intervals
90's creepypasta: yeah the music in Lavender Town in pokemon is so creepy, it killed kids
Aimee Nolte: * hold my beer *
I’ve always found those beat frequencies hauntingly beautiful rather than scary or headache inducing.
I was one of the people when the “original Lavender Town music was banned” stuff was going around, back in like 2008, to listen to it and say I liked it better
Shubh Saran: "Ima Mick Gordon the crap outa this."
It could work in an off kilter psychedelic doom level
You're doing a really good job of showing that aesthetics is not only about beauty, Adam
Music might be the only artform I can think of were you can set out to make something deliberately unpleasant and still somehow end up with something charming and unironically enjoyable. Like the audio equivalent of creepy-cute.
I must say as someone that has gotten sneak peaks of Justice's album and work, she is really under rated and an amazingly creative song writer
Fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed all of these, Adam's and Tyler's in particular. Really digging the Primus vibes in those bass lines.
Shubh's is giving zombie vibes, REALLY dig it!! Also the "4/4" but it feels as if one beat is in slow motion, super cool!!
10:12 You could put those exact words, including rhythm of speach, pronunciation and all that, into Ben Levins mouth and I wouldn't notice. Very similar way of expression.
i think they're partners so that checks out!
"It's difficult to make it sound bad."
It really isn't in my hands.
Shubh’s “whaaat?” At 15:54 is so perfectly harmonized with the chord holy shit
I love how Shubh just immediately goes "Yup, that's adam neely"
all of these are dope as hell. great stuff.
Music is win lost, his song was actually really cool
Sounded like CAFO
@@sawamichelle a bit, yes.
why are you trying to ruin my favorite thing
Seriously though. Even if these pieces are amazing and revolutionary, keep the beautiful beautiful
Lydian is like my ex.
She could gain 50lbs, get bangs, dance like a crackhead and still be mesmerizingly beautiful.
I miss my ex :(
Feel ya man :(
Adam Neely: repetition legitimizes
Also Adam Neely: makes ugly music (with repetitions)
Rewatched this vid a couple of times:
I instantly crushed on Tyler's (musiciswin) and Justice Cow's songs.
