I always liked that the movie also gives us an answer to "If Speed could always drive the Mach 6 like that, why didn't he before?" by showing how wrecked the entire car was at the end.
mach6 was already pretty roughed by the guy using the spearhook on him and bashing him around with it. also it got that bad because he had to go extremely more agressive because they were all on a manhunt on him because the main villain bribed them to do so before the race started. most notably against the 2 racers in the lead were 2 other grunts from the main villain that on a previous race cooped to take him down (also with spearhooks, ilegal tech) so he needed to take them both down. also i like to think that, by the time he was near the end the brakes were completely busted and he needed that last absurd stunt to reach first place and not crash into a wall or something.
Hit me like a freight train, when I first watched this movie as a kid I never noticed that. Now Im sitting here with a logitech HOTAS watching this video lol

The cars are so ridiculously capable that it becomes entirely about the ability of the racer. These people have visuospatial processing that would make The Flash feel a little sluggish, sheesh.

The writing may be subpar in this film, but the visual storytelling and movement is extraordinary everything is colorful and full of life when it needs to be and everything is constantly moving. Such an underrated film.
I don't even think the writing was that bad. They had to keep it a kids film, so certain situations were watered down, but they absolutely pushed the limits on that PG rating for sure. I love the whole corporate greed vs family business aspect and then also just the pure bliss that was the cinematography.

Same with Rex, what brings the writing down to subpar for me is the handling of Sprital and Chim Chim. Most scenes with them grind the film to a halt and when I think of the worst moments in the film, every one of them involves those two. I'm certainly not going to say I could do many better considering the circumstances. They had to be there to keep in continuity with the original series and to make sure it was a kid oriented film for Warner Bros not to mention they were the main reason the film got away with a PG rating.

When I saw it when it came out; I was like 17? I immediately knew it was awesome and loved it from the jump. It was SUCH a good adaptation of the series. OMG; just sooo nice. Glad to own a DVD of it.
I was 12 when this came out and from what I remember it's release was heavily overshadowed by the animated movie "Wall-E" which came out I believe just a short while after this sucks cause personally I didn't like that movie but I loved speed racer.

Still, compared to other Live-Action Anime Movies to come from Hollywood. Speed Racer was at least semi-faithful to the anime and manga...though Speed Racer was WAY more violent in the anime/manga. Still, it had the campiness that seems to be shunned by Hollywood. Even back in 2008.

They went all out in the visual department for this movie. It may look a little rough around the edges in some areas, but for a 2008 kids movie trying to convey the feeling of high octane speed you can barely follow yourself, it nailed it where it mattered. A shame that it ended up bombing as hard as it did, but looks aren't everything after all.

Honestly, the best live action adoption of an Anime IP.
People try too hard to make it realistic instead of going the uthey way. Anime defies logic and physics, that's what makes them good
