What no one is talking about is the part of the speech that was removed before she spoke, which went like this: "When I was growing up a poor black child in Mississippi, I had a dream- where all we had to fear was fear itself. Where people of all races and creeds would join hands and say 'Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth'. I remember a bus driver telling me that I had to sit in the back, but I said ' That's one small step for man, one small step for mankind!'. She gave a great 17 minute speech, despite the 500 words she copied. I wish she didn't, but at least she meant it. Michelle Obama said she never felt proud to be an American, but Melania called her citizenship the greatest privilege on planet earth. She spoke with grace and honesty, and she said it in English, which is her 5th language. I respect the hell out of Melania. I wish she didn't copy those lines but dammit at least she means it and gave a great speech overall.

Melanie's speech writer didn't start the plagiarism. She simply copied Melania's words that were taken from Michelle's speech, then modified them somewhat without checking to determine whether Melania's words were original. Melanie is principally responsible which is why Melania's failure to apologize to Mrs. Obama is outrageous.

Let's be clear Michelle Obama is a highly intelligent Ivy League educated woman with a United States Law Degree. She is without a doubt in every way capable of preparing, writing and executing a speech of her own words and thoughts on or off script. Yes of course certainly she had and still has a prep and press team behind her, what intelligent political personality wouldn't. The difference is the time and dedication you take as an individual preparing and articulating your personality, views and experience intimately with your team. It's just plain apparent that Michelle Obama was more affectionately involved in the preparation of HER SPEECH.

I don't normally agree with Ben but in this case he has a much, much more nuanced and substantive understanding of the topic and is totally on point.
Even if you wrote a speech entire without a writer or help you would be creating calculated lines. Every great speech was calculated. That's the nature of a speech - a formal address or discourse delivered to an audience.
Of course there are varying degrees of input from a candidate and others - writers, etc. - but implying that speech writers are the cause of the in-authenticity of politicians or that all politicians are actors just repeating lines from a speech writer with zero input or thought doesn't make much sense. And delivering lines in a speech that "aren't their words" doesn't bother me at all. That is not what a speech is.
Do you think Martin Luther King Jr. should have spoken off the cuff when giving the "I have a dream speech" or when addressing the mass shootings, Obama should have addressed the nation off the cuff in his own words?
If you are interviewing a politician or debating or meeting them on the campaign trail that's a different story and yes you would hope they would be using their own words.
On the topic of speech writers I don't have a problem with them. I think it's strange for Ana to ask why it is acceptable for politicians have speech writers. Of course it's acceptable politicians have things to do like policy and law making. All politicians use speech writers even Bernie Sanders.
