    Im actually all for this. Legos 18+ lines all feel so excessive solely for the sake of decadant excess for the few big whales, like poorer adults who cant afford a triple digit hobby piece, or want to balance multiple hobbies, dont exist.
    I love the larger sets dont get me wrong, but this is a nice change of pace

    I agree the Piranha Plant is underwhelming compared to those other sets but I don't think that's really being fair to it. The set seems great for what it is and for all we know LEGO's going to release a series of similar sets relatively close together which would make more sense, or release a more ambitious 18+ Mario set sooner than expected.

    To be fair, I think this year's 'adult' set being smaller is just another example of something that I'm personally very happy about. And that's LEGO's reaction to the feedback of them making far too many gigantic and very expensive sets every year, especially in the 'adults welcome' category. I think that wasn't very sustainable approach anyway, when we consider the amount of money most of the people are able or willing to spend on LEGO and also the space they have available at home. And that's not even mentioning the recent economic crisis :(
    Another good example of the smaller but cool display set would be the upcoming Jurassic Park T-Rex skull and footprint. :)
    Personally, I always veered towards buying a variety of normal or smaller sized sets, than only buying a single huge set once in a long while. With piranha plant being one of my favorites from the Mario franchises, I am very satisfied with how this turned out, my only criticisms being the joints/limited poseability and the price per piece being overblown.

      Couldnt have said it any better, smaller but still displayable Sets are the way 🙌 i owned the ucs Millennium falcon a while ago, had to get rid of it because it took up so much space. Owning such big sets also always feel like whoever is having them on display is trying to make his or her whole personality about whatever franchise the set is coming from, which is totally fine, but not what i want my displays to be perceived as. I do still own two bigger sets that i am very proud of (ucs slave 1 and the empire over jedha moc by cavegod), but all in all the Smaller Sets i own like the tallneck, bonsai or tranquil garden or even my full set of toa mata are just so much more charming imo.

    So you're actually surprised and disappointed that the €65 set isn't as big and complex as the preceding €270 set...? My wallet, for one, is happy they didn't go all-out and release some over the top, 1:1 scale, ridable, lifelike, €500+ Yoshi or some nonsense. Modern Lego prices and corresponding set sizes are really getting out of hand. This is a fantastically understated set of an iconic Mario character and a great display piece. Shame you couldn't appreciate it for what it is.

  • @AHYL88

    In fairness, the previous three 18+ Mario sets are substantially more expensive than this one. So I'd hope they're great for how much they cost! And the Piranha Plant set is still expensive for its size compared to a lot of other sets in the same price range which are a lot bigger. If I ever do go for this, I'd be waiting for a hefty discount.

  • @Randolf2013
    @Randolf2013 10 місяців тому +144

    What did you expect Tiago? You’re comparing a $60 to $200+ sets. Of course it’s going to have less than the sets you’ve compared it to. If you want more then you have to pay more. I take this product as an attempt to target 18+ Mario fans who don’t want to build a course nor have hundreds of dollars to spend on the sets you cited. Don’t get me wrong, in many cases I respect your reviews but here and there you really give some poor takes than kind of grind my gears (like the LEGO Galaxy Explorer set). I personally don’t see anything that could’ve been improved on with the set besides perhaps making the head ball joint higher friction so the head wouldn’t keep falling down. You say you wish it to be “something more” yet without any suggestions on how it could’ve been improved. You’re a designer who used to work at LEGO, and considering that I was hoping to get a more thorough and fair review of the product.

      For me, he isn’t saying the Piranha isn’t a bad product. He’s simply saying that it’s not mind blowing like the other sets which he’s dead on. Those other Mario sets are some of the best things Lego has ever done and that thing kinda has legacy. Like how Star Wars UCS always gotta impress and push boundaries year after year

    • @beanedtea
      @beanedtea 8 місяців тому +1

      What are you talking about? The review was fair, and he said that he liked the product for its part collection and design. It's just that in the context of previous 18+ Lego Super Mario releases (that occur only once a year let me remind you), this set was underwelming. When Tiago says, "something more," he isn't just referring to scaling the Piranha plant up or improving it. He is suggesting that the idea behind the set could've been much bigger and totally different.

    • @michiel6634
      @michiel6634 8 місяців тому +11

      I honestly agree with you. I like his reviews most of the time, but sometimes it just kind of pisses me off a lot of different Lego sets are not for Lego fans there for whatever the set is designed off of fans and he’s not whatever that is. He’s a Lego fan most of the time he says it should have more or I could do without, like with the Optimus prime set he said that for some reason he could’ve done without the blaster and axe yet for actual fans they needed items so from his perspective, they may not have been needed, but his perspective does not matter because he’s a Lego fan, not a transformer fan

  • @bdonaghu
    @bdonaghu 10 місяців тому +22

    To be fair regarding your comment at 3:37, when you're receiving sets for free via LAN, of course you'll want them to be bigger and more complex. But everyday LEGO fans have to fork over a ton of money to get these sets, so getting cheaper priced sets is much more desirable for adults.

  • @HardCoreGamer94
    @HardCoreGamer94 10 місяців тому +13

    I get the disappointment given the complexity and piece amount of previous adult Mario sets, but I feel like those adult Lego fans who may be more of on a budget. The Piranha plant definitely fits that bill and I think it would be a fun display piece to put next to any plants someone may own too.

  • @Funky_Player2

  • @skeletonpatch
    @skeletonpatch 10 місяців тому +21

    To fix the head poseability they could have added a CCBS friction addon to the ball socket considering that’s the connection type they chose. I suspect that part is probably out of production along with the majority of LEGO’s constraction parts and including it here would have raised the price but the effect would have been phenomenal, assuming the head isn’t so heavy that not even that could help, at least.

    I feel the size is proper for the set, and it is nice that not every Mario set is gigantic. However, if feel the play features could be expanded on. Nice that they have the coin mechanism, but a lever to open/close the mouth would make the set much more interactive. Would also make it more in line with the puppeteering functions of the Bowser set.

    What a terrible review; not everybody can afford these huge, complicated sets. This is the first time I can actually afford one of these, I think it’s still a little expensive and it’s a shame it isn’t more posable but it looks fantastic to me. I think it's quite a nice change of pace compared to the majority of the recent 18+ sets being huge shelf queens that cost more than I make in a week.
    While I do like big sets such as the UCS Millenium Flacon, BTTF DeLorean, Ecto 1, Titanic etc there's only so much space and money I have.
    While I'm not a massive Mario fan myself, I'm hoping this set jump starts a range of smaller, more affordable sets for other IP's in the 18+ range that are akin to sets like the Speed Champions theme, affordable and well priced per piece count with an enjoyable building experience.
    I'll be honest I think this is why I'm partially worried about the new Orient Express set seen in the leaks so far.
    The train fan in me is excited to see a new steam locomotive with two passenger cars instead of the usual one we're used to, but the financial and logical side of me is worried because I don't necessarily have room for a set that large.
    The whole reason I skipped out on getting the UCS Hogwarts Express (apart from the L gauge track situation) was because it's way too damn big.
    The way it looks to me currently is the OE might actually take up nearly the same amount of space length wise, and if that really is the case I would've much preferred a single passenger car if it also meant having a bit more detail and length on the locomotive itself.
    I felt the OE would be akin to the Crocodile locomotive in the sense that it's not too big that it takes up a lot of space and can't fit on L track like the UCS Hogwarts Express, but still makes a nice, reasonably priced steam locomotive set.
    That said however it seems quite the opposite right now which is unfortunate when I share the similar sentiment of not wanting every set I own to be a massive shelf queen with no where to display it.
    As a side note, if you see this and do get the OE for review Tiago, please do compare the display base size of both the UCS Hogwarts Express and OE if you don't already intended to, thank you.

    I’m very glad that I didn’t buy the UCS Batmobile and Batwing from the 1989 movie. I love the new smaller sets that came out this year. After all, there is only so many big sets you can squeeze inside your dwelling. Something like the two sets I mentioned and the mid-size Star Destroyer are very welcome.

    I think its bold to say that Bowser nailed it, a lot of people complained that it was too big, and that the play functions ran counter to the the purpose of the product, preferring being a play piece rather than a stature or truly posable figure, thus confusing who the actual demographic for the product was. Expertly built yes, but I would say that the TV and NES better fits the purpose of these luxury adult sets. Yes, Optimus is essentially a Toy, but its the ORIGINAL toy, in the same way that an NES is simulating the original product. While yes very small, this feels more like a reasonable display model.

    FEED ME SEYMOUR!!!!!! Replace the red dome piece with dark green, replace a lot of the plant stem with dark green….turn the base brown instead of green, add some parts from the vemonised Groot- tentacle and the like, with some leaf pieces….

    I had very similar thoughts when this was announced. After the last 3 years I was expecting something bigger and badder. I was a little underwhelmed but it still looks great and will be a little easier on my wallet at least. Either way, it would take a lot to beat the Mighty Bowser set....that is my current favorite set...both in build and design...there's nothing I don't love about it.

    Haven’t you specifically been asking for exactly these smaller 18+ sets though? I seem to recall at least one video where you talked about how great they are.
    I think it’s fantastic that they’re offering something in this series that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

    • @TiagoCatarino
      @TiagoCatarino  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes! But I feel the 18+ Super Mario products are the only ones where the bigger size is rightfully required. There’s no way to include as many play features and functions in this $60 Piranha Plant the same way it that was done on the $200 sets.
      On the other hand there’s really no reason to make a $650 Venator model that could have been achieved with similar results (display) in many other different, and smaller, scales.
      But it comes down to personal taste I guess. Clone War fans must be over the moon with it and would not have it any other way

    • @pekkapulli
      @pekkapulli 10 місяців тому +1

       @TiagoCatarino Ah, I do agree with the Venator point, thanks for elaborating! And of course it would be nice to get a big Mario model if it's the only one they're releasing this year, but even as a Mario fan, I think this Pirahna plant is still the only one I can easily see buying. It's not too expensive, and doesn't take the whole shelf to display.

    This is my favorite Nintendo Lego set yet purely because of the price. Sure, it's the most underwhelming one of the 4, but it's the one I can reasonably justify buying. In a time where most 18+ sets cost 200-400 dollars, one that costs $60 and still has amazing display value is so incredibly welcome.

    What a weird response to a smaller set. Most Mario fans/people aren’t interested in spending £200 on Lego, it’s great to see smaller adult sets be an option. The Horizon Zero Dawn one is another that comes to mind.

    • @AHYL88
      @AHYL88 10 місяців тому

      I wouldn't just say most people aren't interested in spending huge amounts, it's also like most people aren't willing to spend huge amounts.
      The Question Mark Block and Bowser should be my sorts of sets to go for, but the Block is pretty poor value for the size of it compared to other sets of the same price range of even less. And Bowser is so expensive as it has the filler content of the platform and two towers that adds to the cost. It doesn't help that there's statues of Bowser that are more detailed and larger for far less, as Jang pointed out.
      The Horizon Zero Dawn Tallneck is pretty much perfect

    Picked it up and built it today. Very happy with it, though it has some flaws. The head is too heavy to pose other then turning sideways and if you lean the whole plant too far to the front, the whole thing will fall over. That's definitely a faulty design. I don't own a lot of bricks, but I had some parts lying arround from Cobi airplane stands that I don't use, so I build a broader base myself and also blocked the stem so it can't move too far to the front.

    I didn't get the complaint until you mentioned that it's a once a year set for that size. From that perspective, I totally get it can be a bummer for big-time collectors. Especially if you play with it and it doesn't just sit on a shelf.

    My Only Mario set thus far is the new Bowser Muscle Car. Great Little Bowser much more usable than the Big One. This Piranha Plant could make a great Sarlaac Pit Parody. Should have had at least 3 coins. Just 2 is too skimpy.

    Thanks for great review as usual. I got the "Tales of the Space Age" set after watching your review (I wanted it but wasn't sure whether to buy it or not, and ended up buying 3 sets on offer lol 😂) and I'm definitely getting the Piranha Plant as well.
    It fits my 2 main criteria to buy Lego as an adult: great showcase or display value (good size, being colorful, etc) and a reasonable price (less than 70-100€).
    I'm definitely buying the NES set as well, it's probably in my top 3 of coolest Lego sets ever (nostalgia is huge with that one) but man, it's expensive at 200-250€ so I'm waiting to get it at some point I really find the 200-250€ disposable next year.
    Also watched your review of the Lords of the Rings: Rivendell set, epic stuff and I'd love to have it, but 500€ on a Lego set is just too much for me, I wouldn't feel right spending that much money on "plastic bricks" 😂.

    Personally I'm happy to have a smaller 18+ Mario set. The previous sets, especially the NES, are super cool, but it's tough to justify buying a set that expensive. I appreciate having a meaty, albeit fairly simple, set that's affordable at only $60

    I think it looks awesome, 1/3 too expensive. ideally you buy multiple and we also need smaller ones. best would be this one, then a midsize and a small size. now do bullet bill, lakitu, the football koopas, stone face; all at that mid to large size😃

    I think if you're going to criticize something relative to something else (this plant to the Bowser), you need to provide ideas of how it might be better. Other than being a plant in a pot, the piranha plant fires fireballs, for example, so maybe you wanted the option to have a fireball inserted in its mouth? Or maybe you mean you wanted some wholly different 18+ set. I don't know, but just saying "I just wanted something more" without any ideas seems like a cop out.
