I had trouble getting good vision out of the stock mirrors and i thought they were really hurting the aesthetics of the bike so i got CRG lane splitter bar end mirrors. Best mods. Straight up. I see behind so much better and my front view is completely open now. The mirrors are really high quality too. No shakes or folding in at highway speeds. They look good too haha. I have a mod video I was gonna put up.
Great vid fellow Vancouverite. This my first bike. Got it last September after doing Pacific Riding School (these guys are amazing!!!). Did B mode for a couple months, then standard and now A all the time...BUT...it is flashed by Vcyclenut and it's actually smoother in A than standard. I was scared silly to try it in A mode but the ecu flash turns it into a smooth as silk rocket. Your advice is very wise! Start on B and work up. Also imho, the ecu flash is mandatory. I am also 6'3'' and 250 lbs so the power is not as insane as it would be for a lighter rider.
Oh no way! I went to PRS as well. They’re the best. You know no fear getting this as a first ride and you went straight to the good stuff. I just looked into Vcyclenut, isn’t the guy in Florida? I’m interested in doing this but thought the local dealership would do the same job? Curious, did you do it to accommodate an aftermarket exhaust? If so which one did you go with? I’m not really finding any I like the sound of on UA-cam. I know these videos don’t really capture the sound but I don’t feel like throwing down on an exhaust unless I am confident I’ll like it.

Great review brother. I currently ride a 2017 Iron 883 from Harley. I’m ready for an upgrade but I’m considering a ride that is comfortable to ride with my girlfriend. How do you feel about the comfort for the passenger on this bike? Thanks in advance hope to hear back from you.
Thanks man! I find riding with a passenger pretty comfortable. Only time I say it isn’t is when I have to put a foot down at the light. Me barely able to flat foot at 5’10” with the extra weight does make it a little sketchy but not undoable. You’ll probably notice the extra weight when coming off a stop; the bike has torque but definitely not like a big twin torque fiend. That being said, have you looked at a dyna or Softail? Probably a more comfortable ride for the passenger. As much as I like this bike, it sounds nothing like - and can never sound like a harley. I’ve taken a few passengers on my XSR. Hey man love your vids :) quick question: I am in the same boat as you. I bought a used Yamaha bolt last year as my first bike too. So far I have put 4000miles on it. I am thinking upgrading to a xsr900. How many miles you had under your belt before you upgraded? Cheers ride safe out there :)
Good advice for beginners and excellent review in general. I am considering selling my MT-01 (google it) and XB12X (you may have to google that) and replace them with an XSR900 and then modify it to look like a scrambler.
Just bought an XSR900 as my first bike. Absolutely love it, magnificent bike. The one thing I dont like is the amount of wind you get on highway speeds (the way it accumulates in the crotch area)
I bought a 2021 XSR 900 as my first bike. But I've ridden mopeds, dirt bikes and bikes "illegally" before. great bike, easy to maintenance, fun and most crucially cheap compared to the value you get. In regards to the power modes I've ridden most in standard or A, with the TCS in 1 and only in "off" when playing around in parking lot. Many people told me it would be too powerful for a start bike, but honestly I'm glad I did. Mainly for the reason being that I can grow into the bike. When it comes to speed, we have laws and as long as you keep to the speed limits you'll be better off on a bike with better breaks, handling and power than a underpowered / cheap 250cc in my opinion.
do you only ride bike or do you have a car too? wondering because I want to really start riding but im in college but want to make sure I can afford everything?
I decided it was time to for a new horse in the stable. I have always been a retro/cafe bike person. While the XSR900 was love at first sight for me the MT 07/09/10 have been on my radar. So I added 2 horses to the stable with the XSR900 and the MT 09. Same inline 3 cylinder cross plane crank engine and 6 speed transmission in 2 different packages. @@thesoloseat7381 That is hard to answer. The MT 09 is a more untamed beast than the XSR for sure. I favor the ergonomics of the XSR. Dont get me wrong, the MT 09 is great too. I've had a lot of bikes in the past. GSXR's, KTM Supermotos, etc... Took a long break from riding then got an FJ-09. Thought I would appreciate the "touring" aspect more being that I'm a bit older now. Nope. Sold that and got a 2018 XSR900. In the end, I wanted something that made me smile, I could customize, and that looked cool-- which lets face it, is a big reason to walk into the garage and want to ride at all. Even after a year and a half, it still surprises me when I get out of the tame city riding and can open it up. I have an exhaust and full tune which helps of course... Anyway, wanted to say that I don't comment on nearly anything on UA-cam and this is my first in a very very long time... Been on a motorcycle review binge lately. Amazing review and your ability to put together some great thoughts while riding makes it very nice to watch. Your statement at 5:29 made me very happy. All too often we want to place full responsibility on the bike, the car, or whatever other entity to "control" the user and rope them in. Nope! It is on YOU to do whatever you are doing responsibly-- 50hp or 150hp! I often disagree with others about "beginner bikes". I get that it's harder to make power based mistakes on a 50hp bike, but if you have common sense and realize things like mashing the throttle = power = I may wreck my new bike if I'm not prepared for that, you'll be fine. My first bike was a used 1999 GSXR600 at 18 years old. Everyone said that was a serious mistake. I babied it and also rode the hell out of it, but always respected it. Like you said, I would have been quite upset wrecking that thing because I couldn't control it (I did get wrecked, but because I was rear ended at a stop light while at a full stop which sucked). Had it for 3 years. Awesome review and solid advice for anyone looking at this thing!
I've got engine guards, CRG bar end mirrors and these Biltwell grips. Oh also a little cargo net wrapped on the passenger side of the seat. Not much. Mostly stock still
the B mode is vicious at best, its slow to respond at first so you give more trottle and Braaaaaaaa wheelie at the worst moment ! B mode is good in city where there is a lots of potholes or bads road so you wont chock the trottle that easy at very low speed but standard is my go to setting and you can controle it without the "turbo boost feel that B mode give you" its in your face right now, and A mode forget it you will be in the ditch if you get a bump in a corner it gonna jump it and down you go, worst mode for sure.
Oh I appreciate that, thanks man. You're not wrong. I found A mode a bit much in this city where I ride a lot but you're not wrong. I know I appreciate it more when I'm on the B side for a bit haha.
I went from an R3 to this. I kept it in full traction control and B mode for 10 minutes, then T.C. 1 and standard most the time. It's not hard to manage at all.
Thanks for this. Hard to get a review with a Canadian perspective. Just got back into riding last year after a 9 year layoff. Bought a CB300F to see if the passion was still there...it was. Started looking at the Ducati 797 or 821 but then the XSR 700/900 caught my eye. Decisions, decisions.
SUGGESTION: Sound like a Professional by Writing then reading a script !!! Can you say Fort 9, Canadians ? Please pay some serious attention to Ryan of Fort 9 (Nine) on YT, not Matt Laidlaw (nice guy and strictly a Harley-Davidson Homer whose Grandfather was essentially given a Harley Store where he, the Grandfather, had worked in Parts and Accessories for years).
Nice Review Solo Seat! Just about to buy since there at a great deal with winter coming. Might get 2-3 weeks of riding before Frozen shows up her face! lol
i’ve watched so many videos on the xsr900 saying it’s not a great beginner bike but i still want to get it😂! i have a 89 yamaha xt350 enduro so i think i’ll ride that for 1-2 seasons then get the xsr900 i have my eyes on.
Great review. For me this bike was a close 2nd. I ended up going for a Z900RS. A lot of it had to do with the lower seat height. I like to be able to flat foot
So I haven't been on a bike in 10 years but getting a beginner bike feels like it would be a waste of time and money since I think I'd pick it up again quickly. Now I was looking at this bike due to the riding modes. Is B mode "neutered" enough to allow someone to get back in to riding?
Haha ya. I would think getting back on a beginner bike would be a waste. Maybe just get a good set of a sliders or engine guards to be safe. You can ease into it in B mode and move up when you're familiar again. You'll do fine.
Hello fellow Canadian!!! Very nice review!! I’m really considering this bike and ktm’s duke 790 or 890!!! Have you ever considered ktm? I’m afraid about reliability!!!
Hey 👋 I never considered a KTM but I did hear about their reliability being a concern in a passing discussion before but I wouldn't say that should mean much to you. However, I do believe Yamaha is consistently ranked as #1 in reliability. My XSR900 ran without issues over several thousand kilometers
@@jaidenmacleod4127 lmao i am the exact same way. I want one so bad but they are so overpriced. I got to ride a 1200 sportster for a while. It was cool but couldn't believe that it cost more than xsr.
Nice man! I recommend you go with the CRG Lanesplitters. Well worth the extra 5 or 10 bucks over the CRG Hindsight. In my opinion, the super cheap ones aren't even worth it. Rizoma's are nice but are really expensive. CRG is good value. I go over it a bit in a recommended mods vid I just put up if you want to check it out. Hope you're liking the ride :)
@@thesoloseat7381 Thanks for the cool video, did the mirrors fit nicely inside the bar end weights? I've seen mods that they needed a small pvc spacer.
Hi. For me, I’ve mostly ridden bikes without a windshield so I find the wind more tolerable than other riders. I think the wind pushing is no problem at 100km/hr. At 120km/hr to 130km/hr I start to feel the wind but not an issue. At 140km/hr to 160km/hr the wind is very very very strong. There are cowls/windscreens you can add onto this model but I don’t know how much it would help.
Hey man I live in Vancouver as well and seeing you ride this around so many familiar places really helped me visualize my experience if I bought this bike. You mentioned the Bolt as well, I'm considering the Bolt R-Sepc and this one. Which one do you prefer??
Hmm they are pretty different riding styles. If it's your first bike, I'd recommend a used bolt for like $5k or $6k. Both the bikes new there is waaay more value in the xsr because they're pretty close in price. Xsr is the better value buy by far. Feel free to ask away.
@@MatthewChenDirector not a bad choice either. Ya, I'd say it's pretty safe or as safe as it gets on a motorcycle. "Bad drivers" are in every city and its an inevitable part of sharing the road. Best you can do is anticipate them and not let it annoy you.

Aw just saw this comment. Really appreciate you sharing and your kind words 🙂
Very helpful video!
What have you done to the bike so far?
I've got engine guards, CRG bar end mirrors and these Biltwell grips. Oh also a little cargo net wrapped on the passenger side of the seat. Not much. Mostly stock still
Still? Will you be making install videos on your future modifications
the B mode is vicious at best, its slow to respond at first so you give more trottle and Braaaaaaaa wheelie at the worst moment !
Nice review well-thought and great use of language having said that I think it's great waste bike not driving Α mode just my thoughts
Of this bike
Oh I appreciate that, thanks man. You're not wrong. I found A mode a bit much in this city where I ride a lot but you're not wrong. I know I appreciate it more when I'm on the B side for a bit haha.
I went from an R3 to this. I kept it in full traction control and B mode for 10 minutes, then T.C. 1 and standard most the time. It's not hard to manage at all.
As a 6'5" person I can say that the XSR900 also fits me perfect. Just bought one and it is a blast to ride. I intent to keep it forever :)
Fellas I'm 5'10, ladies I'm 6\ 1 lol
Great review , bro
What city is this. Auzzy
I have been to Calgary and Vancouver
For me this is the more intelligent video review out there and I’ve seen a lot. Great job!
What kind of oil are you running? Thanks
Still using the standard Yamalube
What a pretty city. So clean, and that underground stretch was so cool!
Nice Review Solo Seat! Just about to buy since there at a great deal with winter coming. Might get 2-3 weeks of riding before Frozen shows up her face! lol
A perfect review, which I was looking for. Thanks for that
My OCD is kicking in and that off center gas cap is giving me a headache 😫
i’ve watched so many videos on the xsr900 saying it’s not a great beginner bike but i still want to get it😂! i have a 89 yamaha xt350 enduro so i think i’ll ride that for 1-2 seasons then get the xsr900 i have my eyes on.
You'll be fine 😀 I rode one season before moving onto the xsr900 so you'll be better prepared than I was lol.
Excellent video. Extremely useful and informative.
WishYouWereHere Thanks! Glad you found some use in my rambling. I guess we’re just...two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl?
We need motovlogs from you, calm and collected
Great review. For me this bike was a close 2nd. I ended up going for a Z900RS. A lot of it had to do with the lower seat height. I like to be able to flat foot
Dude you should make more vids man 💯 this is an awesome review !!!
Not just saying this but this gotta be the best review of the xsr 900 out there well done sir
dang i was thinking about getting the xsr700, but i'm more interested in the long term myself like you and the xsr900 seems to make more sense
I think the 900 is worth the extra. Can’t go wrong either though. You could always try out the 700 and trade up later too.
So I haven't been on a bike in 10 years but getting a beginner bike feels like it would be a waste of time and money since I think I'd pick it up again quickly. Now I was looking at this bike due to the riding modes. Is B mode "neutered" enough to allow someone to get back in to riding?
Lol I should have watched more of the video first! Yea this bike is on my list then
Haha ya. I would think getting back on a beginner bike would be a waste. Maybe just get a good set of a sliders or engine guards to be safe. You can ease into it in B mode and move up when you're familiar again. You'll do fine.
Still the best bang for the buck in my opinion
Hello fellow Canadian!!! Very nice review!! I’m really considering this bike and ktm’s duke 790 or 890!!! Have you ever considered ktm? I’m afraid about reliability!!!
Hey 👋 I never considered a KTM but I did hear about their reliability being a concern in a passing discussion before but I wouldn't say that should mean much to you. However, I do believe Yamaha is consistently ranked as #1 in reliability. My XSR900 ran without issues over several thousand kilometers
@@thesoloseat7381 yes yamaha are solid bikes!! Ktm are more exotic imo!! Thank you buddy!!
Thumbs up for the time stamps. Attention to detail and user interest right there. Well done Mr Solo Seat. The 'Cons' were fair & interesting to hear.
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!
Great review especially your advice to newer riders.
I started on a brand new Honda fireblade 900 and loved every minute. You buy a bike to Learn and have fun not keep it wrapped in cotton wool 🙈😂😂😂

Ride like it’s stolen 😉
Great thorough review!
Vancouver! Hopefully I'll be riding these streets soon!
Ya! What are you going to be riding?
@@thesoloseat7381 Well I have always wanted a Harley, but they are way overpriced, so I'm really looking into the xsr honestly...
@@jaidenmacleod4127 lmao i am the exact same way. I want one so bad but they are so overpriced. I got to ride a 1200 sportster for a while. It was cool but couldn't believe that it cost more than xsr.
5:35 i can not stress enough how much i agree with this. Very well articulated
I have a 2019 model what mirrors did u swap out with?
@@ajritchie7514 yea it was easy enough. I did not need extra spacers or anything to get them on
Great review! Keep it coming! What camera are you using and is it mounted to your chest?
Honest review, thanks a lot! Very straight to the point. Also, are you within Canada? If so, where in Canada?
You mentioned Vancouver later after I posted this comment ha ha sorry for the question, peace out!
I wish it had cruise control. It would be perfect. As it is, it is my favorite bike the one I wish I could get.
Everything I needed to know, thanks for the info
Eaglehaslanded75 great! glad it helped!
Xsr 700 more nimble and slower and better first bike✊🔥
Thanks for talking about the seat height it was a deal breaker when I checked out the ftr
Underrated factor forsure
I put it in B mode during my test ride. After 5 minutes, it was in A 😎
just because of that sound in the beginning.. you
hi... may i know how does it feels when you are riding over 100 kms hr...does the wind pushes badly?
There are cowls/windscreens you can add onto this model but I don’t know how much it would help.
amazing review on this
Thanks! Really appreciate the nice words.
What camara and mic setup do you use for your videos bro ?
One of the best reviews on this bike. 👍 Thanks.
Keep making videos
andrew kigsbury Aw, thanks for the encouragement!
This has got to be the best and the most underappreciated (views) XSR900 review on UA-cam. Thanks for the review bro.👌❤
Daaamn. Thanks for the comment. I really appreciate that 👊🏻
@@thesoloseat7381 I really like xsr900 and am expecting more stuff related to it❤.
@@thesoloseat7381 I would probably be interested in the XSR700 after some more research. Riding in Vancouver, do you feel pretty safe overall?
@@MatthewChenDirector not a bad choice either. Ya, I'd say it's pretty safe or as safe as it gets on a motorcycle. "Bad drivers" are in every city and its an inevitable part of sharing the road. Best you can do is anticipate them and not let it annoy you.
You want the torque then leave it on A mode and go full throttle. It will throw you off if you're not ready for it
Truth right here
