After the massive success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Hollywood understandably wanted to find another way to cash in on the works of JRR Tolkien. That came in the form of The Hobbit trilogy, starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. The only problem? While The Lord of the Rings trilogy was based on a trilogy of books, The Hobbit trilogy was based off a single one. So yeah-- there’s a lot of filler.
The Desolation of Smaug definitely raises some questions. Like why do these dwarves keep getting captured every few minutes? Is Bilbo really going to have to use the ring every time to help them escape? Why does he keep removing it in key action scenes? Why is Legolas here? How did they think they’d be able to take down a dragon using heat? Why does this movie just kind of end?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

When an OP character is sidelined in a movie to prevent them from rapidly resolving the plot, it is called being "Xavier'd".
The term was coined by The Weekly Planet podcast, but I suppose the true credit for the concept would actually have to go Bryan Singer.

In rewatching, I like that scene better each time. In the book, Bilbo makes Smaug mad, the dwarves run into the mountain just in time for Smaug to fly around and destroy the secret entrance, then they all cower in the mountain for like a week or something waiting for the dragon to come finish them off. Definitely not as exciting to watch.

The first is mildly tolerable, but they're altogether just not that good. They just so wanted the movies to be the LOTR but prequels, but the original book just isn't set up to be that. LOTR is a cohesive story that flows from one situation to the next with each one having lasting impacts on the next. The Hobbit is fairly episodic with only a few encounters somewhat influencing the future story, but basically every single threat is dealt with in its own episode. So they kept trying to make the movies this super lore-heavy, grandiose story, but that's very much not what The Hobbit is.

    • @nomukun1138

There is far less content in The Hobbit - the book - then in one volume of LotR. You do the math.
Watching the Hobbit movies made me question the structures of American movie-making and marketing, lowered my respect for J.R.R. Tolkien, and ruined a friendship, but it was not an enjoyable watching experience.
