29 Why do advanced shooters prefer TTF over OTT and why do they prefer thinner frames?

  • This is the first question where we are positively stumped:
Why do top shooters shoot TTF and prefer thin frames?
Kidding sort of. Because our answer is that top shooters don't actually prefer through the forks instead of over the top and we're not convinced that they necessarily prefer thinner frames either.
Top shooters are often able to shoot TTF and OTT with great success. And if you look at the world championships, you will see that a majority are actually shooting over the top. This is consistently true at all world championships.
We understand it may seem that proficient shooters gravitate toward smaller frames because proficient shooters know that they are less likely to get a four kit (and may be willing to "risk" using a smaller frame) but there is no clear connection between advanced shooting and smaller frames. Frame size is more a personal preference than anything, and we know some of the best shooters in the world who shoot very large bulky frames. For example, John Webb shoots a large frame, and the top Chinese shooters are known for shooting frames with enormous ergonomic handles.
So what answer is that they don't. The top shooters in the world shoot TTF and OTT with the majority shooting OTT and they shoot frames of all shapes and sizes.
We encourage you to do the same. Experiment with frames and shooting styles and find the one that works best for you.

Fascinating, never knew that ott was dominant globally. Now I’ll give a little more respect to my huge wrist hunter / defender (1.5mm flats + 7/16 bearings).

Glad to hear shooting TTF is not considered a prerequisite for more advanced shooting. I tried it for a spell a couple of years ago and definitely did not like it.

I switched last night from OTT to TTF and it seemed to change my point of aim for the better. Then I went back to OTT and POA stayed the same. In my novice mind, I’m going to agree with, it doesn’t matter.

If you think you might switch to butterfly down the road, stick with Ott. Butterfly requires reverse grip. Loading is really awkward in TTF. A floating anchor increases the chances of frame/hand hits.
Otherwise it's all about which one you put the training time into.

I shoot ttf with both eyes open. It allow me to shoot it like a shotgun and you can see through your hand somehow with both eyes open for long shots.

I had a similar experience, I started with OTT frame and was having a hard time being accurate, switched to a TTF frame, did much better and then when I tried OTT again I was much better. I think either frame can help you "get" how to aim and once you get it you can apply those lessons to other frames. I switch all the time from TTF to OTF as I love frames from both camps.

I feel like aiming is more natural with TTF, with the band appearing flat, not twisted, and I can use the corner or edge of the fork as aiming reference point better. However I’ve been going OTT believing I’ll be less likely to fork strike as I perfect my release technique.

@@kroodle8 Yeah I kept getting frame hits on my TTF catty , have beat the crap out of my frame but I finally realized it was almost always my release causing the issue and raising my elbow seemed to really help fix the frame strikes.

I do think it's all what one becomes accustomed to. There was that Bill Hayes video he did comparing ttf to ott by clamping both styles to the bucket of his tractor and tacking few shots at paper with each, all factors being equal he concluded the paper shots didn't lie with ttf showing to be more accurate. I've tried ttf and can see it being very accurate for competition shooting at those distances(usually 10 meters,I believe). Personally I shoot ott and almost exclusively semi-long draw,as I reach out to greater distances I find it serves Me best, along with a 85-90mm frame (still Loving the natural fit& fantastic SCOUT LT frame though✓). Nothing wrong with short draw at all an I feel it's prob vital to learn the basics &far easier to get tac drive accurate having a set anchor.Definitely do what works for you.Its great time to be involved in the Slingshot community.

There is still the factor of release. Release has the most to do with accuracy. I have not seen this video though.

@@simpleshot absolutely, release is vital, I often shoot.177cal or 6.35m an feel it helps keep my release in check, the wicked high speeds ya can get &a relatively light draw with simpleshot 4m Latex helps me with accuracy,& I find to be challenging fun!👍 Something I haven't heard mentioned to much is also knowing When to release..w/out holding too long of course.

I used to shoot OTT and hold the catapult in my right hand. I broke my thumb, so I changed hands and started to shoot TTF. I find it to be a lot more accurate.

Stick to a frame design you like one design and get good with it start out with that design in a more robust material hdpe for instance then get that exact frame in a custom or finer material as you progress then start experiments with difrent designs and fork widths once you no your fundamentals on a familiar frame before changing if that's to narrow forks like I did so be it I changed from ttf to ott as I progressed and gangster to upright but I'm still on the journey of progression 7 years later

  • @billcarpenter5615

I started OTT was having a hard time, got a TTF frame and had a much easier time of it, I think it just depends on how your brain works, and once I "got it" with TTF I tried OTT again and did much better, I really don't think it matters much which you choose. My preferred frame right now is a TTF but that could easily change, I still shoot with OTT frames as well, love the Torque X but my favorite frame right now is a Cleaver.

You nailed it in one word: "preferred."
That's what it's all about. We all have our preferences and they will come and go. But we'll always have that one that's just right. :)

@@simpleshot I talk to a guy (The Smo Show) saying he only shoots OTF and I've wondered why, he said he cant stand TTF but what I really want to know is, Does OTF have less of a chance for frame hits? is that why some would prefer it? as the flight path has less chance to clank the frame if you scuff up your shot?

    • @simpleshot
      @simpleshot  9 місяців тому +1

Jordan is a great guy. OTT allows you to see the target at any distance whereas TTF will have the target covered at some distances do to the ammo dropping.

@@BakeJake The absolute most frame hits for me has been on my TTF Cleaver Pro, I have only had a couple frame hits with my OTT frames. I don't know if that is a TTF thing or just me or just me with this frame. Now I don't get many frame hits with it now, but in the beginning I had a ton on the cleaver. I still love that frame though, one of the easier to aim with, next closest would be the scout x or the axiom x for me.
