Agreed the role of advisors can only be overlooked, but not denied. I remember in early 2020, during covid-outbreak, my portfolio worth around $300k took a slight fall, apparently due to the pandemic crash, at once I consulted an advisor in order to avoid panic-selling. As of today, my account has yielded big fat yields, and leverages on 7-figure, only cos I delegate my excesses right.

I can answer why you see such a wealth gap in India.. In capitalism, first the rich one get rich, then the next layer, and next layer. So yes, India is at an inflection point where income inequality is high. But as they will grow their business, startup ecosystem boosts, Manufacturing booms.. The gap will reduce and personal wages will grow like the ones in china today. China also had tremendous wealth inequality in the 2000s. China's GDP as a share of world in 2000 was same as India in 2023.

I've never lived in Mumbai but been there for a few days on two occasions. On each occasion I've felt the yearning to be a part of Mumbai. The same happened when I spent about a year in Paris for postgraduate study. It was very cold but as soon as I was settled in, I felt the same. I agree with the author, I've been to other European cities and not felt the same. It is the happy feeling of being there and part of life there.

IST is definitely a real thing, perhaps best characterized by the ubiquitous Indian phrase "Just now coming." For a Western person who is used to everything running on to-the-minute schedules it's quite a patience-building exercise.

He has hit the nail on the head. "the moment you say you are the greatest country" you are finished. We in India are on the verge of ruin because the last 10 years we have had leaders who are saying the same thing. We better watch out or else we are doomed. We have to stop this trend before its too late!!!!

I'm from the US and a language and geography enthusiast. I've never been to India before, but I would like to go someday. In the topic "two things you need to know about India," I noticed two different regions of India mean differently when you say "5 minutes" which is astounding. I have done a little bit of research on Indian English which is quite similar to British English, but there are some differences. It's very disparate when we learn different English from a different country outside of our native country you're born in. I'm very astonished English in India is surprisingly different than other English-speaking countries.

All I have to say Thank you ❤
The perception of India as a “poor country, with uneducated superstitious people” was propagated mainly in the 70s-early 90s. The British colonial mindset that - everything English or western is inherently superior, more elite than anything Indian, was deeply ingrained in the subconscious of indians in that era. That was the reason of brain drain of highly tslented engineers, doctors and scientists from India to US and UK in the 90s. Gladly that colonial mindset has changed now. I am happy the world is waking to this new generation of confident Indians who are not ashamed to say Jai Hind!

Jeff is right about the prices going up. I think its the way of living on credit cards and living life on EMI's which is causing this perception that people have enough money to afford things. Once this bubble bursts and people realise that the generations before them used to save because there's no social net. Savings rate is declining and even the govt is vary of that fact.

Its mostly disappeared now as it has become a city where you can find people from every part of India
This behaviour was initially due to the politics of the earlier govt and the fact that Hindi speaking people started to come in huge numbers in 2000s and the Marathi's got kind of alarmed

the wealth gap is a real thing. our parents were able to afford most of the things and now most ppl are not able to afford even a house, most of them are selling the houses their parents bought and rebuying new ones. The amount of ppl actually able to afford any housing on their own is decreasing. if this continues, india will reach a inflection point where the gap between haves and haven't is more and might lead to social unrest.
