Wow, 25 gallons of tallow from one steer?? I'm familiar with leaf lard but didn't realize that suet is the beef equivalent. Interesting! When making lard jar candles, I also use beeswax to firm up the lard to keep the wick from flopping over. Lard is a lot softer so you use more beeswax, one part beeswax to 4 parts lard. Thanks for this fascinating video!
I just started making tallow candles and have had to make some adjustments with the wicks. This video has been one of the most helpful videos I've come across. Thank you for sharing.
That's great to hear it's been helpful, and you're most welcome :)
You have to install wick exactly centered and waxed to bottom enuf or glued to bottom or wick lifts and decreases burning time
I’m am blessed by finding your post. Thank you for sharing Christ and giving him praise thru your presentation. I looked at I believe all of the tallow candle making posts and yours was the most informative. Thank you!
Thank you very much, I'm warmed to hear that :)
How wonderful!
Wonderfully done!
this is so wholesome. thanks for the recipe!
Awesome video!!!
My daughter likes to eat 85/15 hamburgers many nights a week. So I’ve been saving and purifying the beef tallow to make body lotion and candles. It’s not the highest quality tallow, as found around the visceral organs. But for some reason it’s quality is not bad. It sets up as solid as lip balm. When you purify it using a bit of water, and hamburger debris settles down into the water, and the tallow floats and hardens on top. I really appreciate this high quality video. You’re well-spoken and remind me a bit of the talented Mennonite women who live around us. I like the biblical/Hebrew history lesson and the quote at the end. These candles will be nice to put away for emergencies or just to enjoy one evening for pleasure.
Thanks for your comment, and you're most welcome. Glad to hear this was helpful to you!
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Excellent video on making tallow candles! The best I have seen.
Thank you very much!
Just started rendering tallow and I’m excited to try this . Thank you !
So serene & beautiful family celebrating Sabbath dinner....(reminded me of celebrating sabbath dinner with my great grandma , grandma & the rest of the family)
That's really beautiful to hear.

Glory to God! I loved this video so much. Im rendering tallow right now to make tallow balm and might make some candles as well. Thank you and grace be unto you, and peace, from God our father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 🙏

Thank you Fabricio. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.
all you do is great
Yaweh has truely blessed you all! Please pray that God would put me in a beautiful family as yours. I saw 2 other videos also..the family hike.. I know your just kids still, I pray that God continue to answer all your family prayers that honor and bless him. Your lives are Soo rich and real. At 55 years old I realize still our own true riches are truely and will forever be as we seek, find Yawehs hand living in each one of us and celebrate that each day...slowing down enough to be able to see through the lattice that veils perfect beauty if all that God and Yawey our creator has done. Thank you for celebrating this Shabott day with me..you and your family. By the way, your dad and wife on that mountain made me cry some pretty hard tears of love and thankfulness he was feeling toward Yawey God his creator for all thankfulness and blessing he shared. Shalom to you and your family and all that you touch and all that touches you.
Thank you Shelley! Wonderful blessing to hear from you. May Yahweh bless you with the family He knows you need. Shalom and hope you had a blessed Sabbath :)
Do you guys ever think about offering internships or in-person classes? I’d love to send my 5 girls up to learn leather working etc. We farm /homestead down in the states and we aren’t as set up as you guys yet, but our lives look similar 😊

I love this video. So sweet. The music is precious. My 6yo little boy whispered in my ear that you are beautiful. ♥️ I love that he sees your sweetness and beauty through this teaching video. Thank you
Aww, that is so sweet! Thanks for sharing that Jenny :)
I can’t wait to try this. Thank you so much for posting. When you ship your candles, do you have to package it differently to avoid it melting in the mail?
That's great! Because I put beeswax into my candles, they firm up quite nicely (even firmer than some of the salves I make) so for the most part I'm not worried about them melting.
Thanks for sharing!! I loved your video and can't wait to make candles. What size wick do you recommend? Thanks!!
Blessed
Amen Thank you 🕊️
God bless your family 🙏🌹❤️
Thank you
Thank you for the video. It is very inspirational. I wasn’t expecting to be moved when I searched for the candlemaking. I am touched by the gratitude that I saw displayed for your familyFor the animal that you used to make these candles
Thank you for sharing that Dawn, that is wonderful to hear.
Those candles look amazing! We are looking forward to trying it with our goat tallow :) Do you have any tips on on extracting the goat tallow? Is it the same way that you mentioned doing with cows?
God Bless you guys, and thanks for the video!
---Sydney
Hi Sydney, thanks! Yes, you'd render the goat tallow the same way you would beef. Chop up the fat and cook slowly until all the fat has come out.
I believe that you could add vanilla for it to smell and good job keep looking up
Thanks Randy. Vanilla would smell very good! I know people will often add essential oils, but you have add so much and they seem to evaporate too quickly... a bit expensive, especially if it doesn't smell bad in the first place. But vanilla would probably be cheaper.
Thank You. 12:11
Great job Amberlin, your candles look very nice, can you mix the different Tallows together, such as deer, cow or goat? Thank you.
I'm sure you could, but I haven't tried it. Thank you very much :)
I don't think I've ever wanted to be a farm family more than seeing that table full of people saying grace on a Sabbath.
Thank you for this lovely video. Have you successfully use lard to make these types of candles? If so, pork being such a strong smell, do lard candles have one too? Thank you and many blessings.
Thanks! We haven't used lard, but I'm sure it would work fine. Not sure how it would smell... the smell largely depends on how the lard/tallow was rendered. You could add essential oils, although it would take quite a bit.
@@fourseasonsnorth Thank you!
Wow
What’s the ration of tallow and beeswax? I don’t think I caught that in the video. Thank you
Amazing video, I've been trying my own Tallow candles and they haven't been working out the best
It's tricky getting the right firmness, and that depends on if you're using the hard suet or not. Keep trying!
Could a factor be getting the initial water content out of the fat? I recently watched a video on preparing tallow to can/preserve it and part of their technique in knowing it was ready was having a lid on the pan and check it until there was no more condensation forming inside the lid to let then know it was ready for canning. This would probably be a good idea when rendering for use in candles
Thanks for this video. I am new to making tallow candles. My tallow is soft at room temp. I'm making candles in jars. I'm using beeswax like you say. My candles turn out great but if you touch them they're not real hard. My question is will my candles go rancid/bad if the texture isn't real hard? I'm thinking long term storage, how long do these keep? My jars have lids would lids help for long term storage?
That's great! Mine aren't very hard either, but the softness of the tallow will affect that. If you want your candles firmer just add some extra beeswax. I wouldn't think the firmness of the candles would affect their storage life, as tallow is quite shelf stable and will last a long time in cold storage. If you're looking to store your candles long tern, I'd suggest putting them somewhere cool (around 5C), and yes, with lids on. If you haven't already, you might want to check out our video on rendering tallow: ua-cam.com/video/yqr_CWVyVfo/v-deo.html
For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.
Amen.
Where do I found glassware that will withstand the heat of the wax and burning candle once lit?
Most jars, votives and mugs work well. Make sure they have thick enough glass, and generally not too much taller than they are wide.
Can you add essential oils? What proportion? Bless you!
Yes, you can, but I haven't. I'd imagine you would need to add quite a bit of essential oils to get a good aroma.
What is tallow/beeswax ratio please?
6:05
Have you tried coloring them? If so what did you use?
No, I haven't.
Since suet is the hardest tallow, wouldn't reg fat or lard be more suitable for adding to beeswax, which is very hard?
Not sure I understand your question... However, even the hardest suet tallow is softer than beeswax and can be too soft for making a firm enough candle. When making tallow candles with suet it works best to add some beeswax.
I want to make the wicks like you showed with the bees wax. But I'm worried about putting them down on something since beeswax doesn't come off of stuff. And thinking they'll stick to paper. So I'm wondering, what should I put them down on while the beeswax dries?
I just hang onto them until they're cooled down enough to gently lay them down. It doesn't take long, a minute or two.
@@fourseasonsnorth Great thank you! Thanks for the quick reply. Great video instruction too btw. :)
Have you made tallow dipped candles? I want a natural way to harden the tallow w/o beeswax due to cost.
No, not yet. But if I was, I would want to make sure I use suet tallow (the hard, waxy fat found around the organs of the animal) and mix in some beeswax. Although, when it comes to tapers, nothing beats beeswax!
Are those crepes you guys are eating? If so I would love to see a crepe recipe video!
Yes they are! We'll put that on our videos-to-make list :)
Where can I get the cotton wicks?
We bought ours from BeeMaid, but you could check at craft stores.
Why you mixed the tallow with beeswax? Tallow also the good fixator for wick in the jar.
Depending on where you got the tallow from on the body of the animal it can be quite soft and the beeswax helps firm it up a bit more.
@@fourseasonsnorth Thank you, I understood. I used soft tallow like spread butter. It was good container candle.))
Do they burn evenly or does tunnelling occure?
If you choose the correct wick size you avoid tunnelling.
Will adding essential oils work to make them scented?
Yes, although I think you'd have to add a good amount in order to smell them.
Do you have an approximate burn time say for a 1 or 2 cup candle? Thank You
I'm wondering the same thing. Not sure the size of the punch cups but the other are 4oz jars. But it would be nice to know how long they last.
I have the burn time for a couple different candle on our website here: www.fourseasonsnorth.com/product-page/farmhouse-candles
What were you all eating at 11:11?
Crepes, or what we call Granny Pancakes.
Do you ever notice a fat/greasy residue in surrounding areas?
Nope
I watched your dad and brother and sister trying to tear down beaver dam and they need to trap them and sell the hide let you have the customers which is selling around 80.00 to a hundred dollars a pound. They use castoreum for making perfume. PS customers is to be c a S t o r e u m hope that helps you and God bless you all
Is some sort of mass reincarnation from the old west to Gen Z?? I think so
Very nice video.... sorry you had to murder your friend so you could have Candlelight and food....
Tallow smells n smoky n causes headache no good for asthmatic people as well,,,
Smells and smoky NO - depends on how one renders the tallow. Quality determines output.
Causes headache? Not for me who is very sensitive so no beeswax or paraffin wax (pollen and paraffin allergy). Not a fan of soy wax either and most certainly no fragrances. Each to his/her own.
Store bought candles are toxic, not natural materials
So from what I understand you can't just use fat and have to add beeswax? Why can't you just use the fat?
It depends on Howard the fat is. If the fat alone is quite firm at room temperature you probably would not need the beeswax.
