The Witcher....I'm not saying that 30 million copies of The Witcher 3 were sold....but Google sure is. No wonder we have over 40,000 people who signed up to drop $100 or more on this board game. And to be fair...I don't think they'll be disappointed either. This is a solid experience, true to the IP, accessible for new and experienced gamers alike.
    Kickstarter launches May 25th.

5 - Great game. Period. It's in my collection. Obviously.
4 - Really solid game but for reasons X or Y, I'm just not willing to give it my top score. Almost always a game I'm adding to my collection.
3 - A solid game. May or may not enter/leave my collection depending on a number of factors such as other similar games, personal interest, people I play with etc. Sometimes can reflect a game's allure dropping over time.
2 - I'm either not the target audience, or too many issues with it.
1 - An arguably bad game.

I would like to see something like a die roll used in addition of cards to greater vary monster attacks. That way you could have more than the binary bite/charge attack. Rolling a 6 sided die in tandem with a card with options like 1-2 Bite, 3-4 Charge, 5-6 monsters special ability/attack. Thanks, game looks amazing!

I am so excited! I love the Witcher lore from the books and games, and I love deck building, so I was very happy to see your great take on it. Appreciated the analysis that the game is accessible and fun for a wide range of people since that will make it easier for me to get to the table with others too. Thanks!

I liked how they offered the Core version with tokens instead of minis for every monster. But then I saw that the add-on expansions do not have a token-only option. Sucks. I'm too OCD to have part of the game tokens and other parts with minis.

Combat system (deck being your attack and health track) with combo triggering potential sounds a lot like a cross between the Dark Souls board game combat and Tainted Grail's card combo mechanic. Really interested with this one and listening to your feedback I hope the developers take on board the comments to improve the Monster deck, even adding an advanced deck of Monster cards for experienced gamers or just a harder challenge. Thanks again for your efforts!

Thank you guys for this very interesting overview! You answered some of my questions and clarified some of my impressions. First of, I'm interested by the Witcher Franchise, I will eventually watch the tv show, but it's not a world I really know and my video game time is not that high. Also, IP always makes me want to be careful. The first time I heard about this game, and dig in a little, it felt like an improved version of the Witcher Adventure game, which was ok, but nothing spectacular. It did seems like a better version, and your presentation at the beginning of the video, made me feel like the experience would definitely be better and more fun. I'm happy you mentioned Runebound 3rd edition, since I managed to get my hands on a used copy with expansions last year, and we should be able to play soon. We still can't have friends over, but that should change before the end of the summer.
Once you started to explain the game, it made me think about Arkham Horror 2nd edition. This is my favorite game of all time. I have everything from it, I've played many games (but not close to go through everything) and not as much as I would like. But I felt that what it would be missing, is impact on the world or the game board. Maybe it's there, but I've played over 30 games of Arkham Horror, 7 or 8 with extra board, but what can happen is so different, from game to game, that I don't mind playing on the same board. Once you explain the game I said, hummm, deck building, flavor text, they could easily had more cards, modify/add boards, create campaign... To sum it up, I want to play it, but it's simplicity might bored me after a few games. But additional content might win me over.
Although, I believe we need more games, from different types and mechanic, that introduces new players to new types of games. I might eventually get a copy, or recommend friends get one, to make them discover the adventure type games. The older Witcher game was basically a pick up and deliver, disguise as an adventure game, this one feels definitely like an adventure. And with additional content, KS #2 might be when I'll jump in.
Thanks again, this sums up what I found and thought about the game. I'll pass on this one, mainly because I have spent a bit much lately on KS, and now, I want to enjoy what I own, before buying more. But I'll definitely keep an eye out for that one!
    Have a great day!

    @CheddahSlammer 3 роки тому +4

Your comparison to Runebound is quite accurate, I still love Runebound 2nd edition till this day. The biggest problem in Runebound 2nd edition was the three classes Ranged, Melee and Magic were unbalanced based on when they would go off. So for example while in combat you would fight a monster, and you would always check Ranged first then Melee, then Magic. So if you increased your stat in Ranged you ended up being Op against all types of monsters, because it was always the first you checked. A character that upped Magic would suck against Ranged and Melee monsters, as it had to wait. This was also the case with Pvp, which led people to disregard the Pvp rules. This problem was fixed in many of the expansions, where they would have monster abilities that would skip " Ranged turn of combat" or " this monster takes no damage from ranged attacks. This game looks exactly the same, except with better combat system, however it doesn't have the variety that Runebound has with all the expansions.

Pretty much the impression I got, too: Simple, accessible and fun, looks like a good game overall, but the novelty will rub off due to the shallow decision space and getting to know the exploration cards. Looks like 5 great games, 5 good games after that and then it's okay and won't get much play. No place for that in my collection probably but perfect for all those witcher fans that are not board game experts and will back this due to IP. 👍

I went all in with the deluxe package and all add ons. I'm really hoping the base game helps to bring me into the tabletop fold and the expansions take me into a deeper complex gameplay once I've become familiar with the hobby via this game. This feels too similar to runebound for me. I loved runebound intially, but after 7+ play-throughs I got bored and it hasn't come off my shelf in over a year. The problem I developed with runebound was that I felt it lacked strategic options on how to stymie my opponents. Once I got past the flavor text, it was just a race to collect stuff.

Any mention of how the art is mostly from Gwent: The Witcher Card game? I suspect the deck building aspect is closer to Gwent than to the books, TV show, or the computer games. It's a great IP with a lot of rich source material. If this board game is not deep enough, look into Gwent online, which is quite deep and complex, with new cards coming out from time to time. Also it is somewhat free to play...

Getting recently into the ip makes me want this game, but I don't think it's a good fit for me as presented. I also own Runebound 2nd edition (uplayed), however, I prefer the movement system in map here.
Overall I also would like to see the card mechanics getting more advanced. They're very basic without any text abilities on cards. At least have additional symbols on them. For example, when a card with a specific symbol is played, refer to player's character board. That unique ability is triggered (advanced side?). I'm more interested in co-op, though. Actually I would hope a story or scenario mode in Witcher world with voice acting app support. For cards, input card number to get the text read aloud.

Also, I worry that for each Witcher themed game aimed at newcomers to the hobby released it will get increasingly more difficult to obtain the IP for something more in depth in the future.
I was holding on to my copy of the Witcher the boardgame for a couple of years in the hopes of an expansion or an official module to make the game fun beyond a "casual" way. Really loved the artwork, how the combat worked, miniatures and some of the story/investigations but the objective of that game was so off and non-thematic with its "race for points to become the winner" and having the gang of core characters compete against each other instead of making it a co-op. I was really bummed out nothing was released, and that such an experienced board game developer as Trzewiczek had agreed to force himself to make such a hollow experience.
Make a Witcher game co-op is the first thing that I would do for a large game like this where you move around the world. I thought the combat worked well in the Witcher Adventure game, but also think that combat in Gloomhaven with its deck of cards being your attacks and health or even dice combat from Spartacus that allocated wounds to your stats is something that is simple but engaging.
Add in one player playing as the Wild Hunt trying to fulfill their objective, while the heroes attempt to do theirs akin to Star Wars Rebellion. Throw in hidden movement, laying traps and monster ambushes on the map like in Fury of Dracula and you could still have a game that is not a "campaign" but a one off replayable adventure with lots of replayability.
Also the Witcher may be about monsters to a large extent, but it is equal parts mystery, investigations, scheming intrigues, collecting resources and brewing potions. Just making a game where players wander about killing monsters for victory points as a race to determine the winner is not necessarily something bad, but in that case it would make more sense to just to it like a Thunderstone spinoff.

I want to be excited but it seem to be the same type of game that the FFG Witcher board game was. It was lacking even though individual parts of the gameplay were really good. The objective in this one makes more sense but at the same time it seem to have the same major flaw of being pretty looking and IP dressed with not enough depth or longevity. It will most likely fall into that weird category of games that you play a couple of times at most since it does not entertain experienced gamers beyond being a novelty and new players want something more after a few games. In general I think underestimating newcomers to board games by offering them a so-so game with a popular IP does not benefit any one camp.
If I want to teach board games I pull out Ticket to Ride or something similar. I think most people would love an in depth experience with popular IP's and would tolerate a necessary complexity level to match the book/tv show/game that such a board game would be based off.
I will keep an eye on the KS to see if something more comes up in terms of rules and content but I imagine it is difficult to remake many design choises as it would make the game different from the designers idea/vision.

I normally have no interest in competitive adventure/questing games. Ironically I own Runebound, but only because of the co-op expansion. But the competitive aspect certainly makes thematic sense in this game and seems intriguing. Really disappointed though to hear that the enemy creatures don’t feel more unique from each other, since a major part of the video games was learning about the unique characteristics of monsters and preparing to face off against them. To not deliver a similar experience in the board game seems like a big thematic failure.
