I would glue up solid material. Have done it many times before. Cut relief groves on the back side to prevent the jams cupping.
You have a rolls royce table saw/jointer/planer setup and a domino and ... edgebanded plywood to make a wider board?
My thoughts exactly
I didn't think I would watch someone ironing today, but here we are. Great video as always!
Better them than me!
as always I'm blown away by the planning.. measuring😮😮...and execution of these jobs! Such beautiful work I'd give anything for this talent. love your videos!
As to not having the joining bars for your track saw tracks, just slide the the bars onto one track about 1 inch from the end of a track and crank down the set screws. Then when you need them you have them. Just a easy way to keep them handy and not lose them :)
Fine wood like oak, maple or black walnut finish grade trim, even soft wood should be edge glued solid stock and not plywood. So paint grade or varnish, use sid stock , cut width then casings, fewer headaches. Any cabinet shop would be happy to make oversize jamb stock.
That is a perfect catchphrase. Put it on some sweet merch cause this channel is going places
Design change. Answers the question about where the pocket doors went. We had a butchered jamb that needed facing with minimum change in the opening width. Used 1/8” Baltic birch. Painted up nicely.
I enjoy a trip to the Plywood Store and that Birch plywood looks nice. That home you are working on will be a great showcase and photos of it will look nice in you work portfolio.
You sir do awesome work, love the Happy Gilmore reference!
Beautiful work, as always.
Wow! Love to see this level of craftsmanship with paint grade🤯
Historic house...1923....come to England...add at least 300 years 🤣
Love that you incorporated Happy into the vid today!
When you edge band a soft cloth between iron and banding will prevent scorching wood.
Gotta get Festool to send you a Contruro edge bander!!! Love your videos man!!! Super inspiring and I now also follow Brent Hull and getting crazy stoked to add some class to our house!!
Why not just join two boards together to get the width you need or find a local sawyer who has some dry boards in the width you need?
We assume the best quality job requires the best quality tools. To that we would appreciate your analysis and review on your chosen iron used in high detailed quality finish carpentry

Just run a sparkle knife on the rock n float it out.I enjoy all your video’s.I do Trimwork for new homes in Nj.
Another great video!
"Blue line" I like that...lol
I love the “Happy Gilmore “ reference.
This was very helpful, thank you for posting.
Richard, You sound more like Brent Hull with each video ! Great job 👏
Don't forget to take the iron back to your wife man! lol good work.
Happy Gilmore style.
Great work. Love the explanations.
I’m still looking for the Dewaukita shirts to hit the store.. hhhmmm I didn’t get to the channel in time when they were for sale for that limited time.
on the plywood edge, you could have done 45 corner cuts!!!
You need to upgrade your track saw to the Festool!....way better than that Dewalt
After you held the trim in place I was wondering why you edge banded at all, but later you said that there would be I think a quarter inch reveal. So, that's why.
Also, good to know that one side of the wall was plumb so at least one straight 90 degree cut was good. The other side would taper... instead of both sides tapering.
Thanks Richard. Your attention to detail is necessarily impeccable. Well done, thanks for sharing 👍
Beautiful work.
Why not use folding wedge's at the bottom to level up studding wall it might move it over a bit if your lucky.
Jamb! Well done. Title approved.
I’ve been wanting to pick up the DEWALT cordless tracksaw but I know AS SOON AS I DO, Milwaukee will finally release theirs. Great video, boss man!
If you do get the DeWalt saw, buy the Festool track. It's compatible and the track is "tackier". Also, you can buy more accessories (square rail, parallel guides etc) for it. Finally, the Festool track connectors are a little more solid/accurate
@@hansangb wow! I had no idea, thank you kindly!
I love my DeWalt track saw, but have to agree on getting the Festool track. Good luck finding parallel guides for the DeWalt track, its symmetrical design makes designing add on accessories a difficult task. I wish I knew the Festool track was compatible before I invested in four different sized DeWalt tracks.
From what I hear, the Makita track is also supposed to be compatible with the DeWalt saw.
Good content. 👍
You probably should have just made those jambs in the garage and brought them over, first thing I thought was, "it doesn't matter what the reveal is, you're stuck with that hard corner where there should be a round-over."
This is why Brent Hull hired you. Finding solutions that look beautiful!
I need a John!
The jamb going to get painted, who cares if plywood or solid wood, plus he did mention that material shortage nowadays.
Give it a little tappy, tap tap tap a roo
Nice 👍
No local sawmill available for you to grab some wider material? Regardless, great job as usual 👍
Is the edge band paintable?
Are you adding the thickness of your track saw blade to your measurement and cutting on the off cut side instead of the normal way a track saw is used?
Agree with others....solid edge is the way to go...with eased edges...as stated a cabinet shop could build them for you.... otherwise....good job
Nice work
The 1/16 that the end of the tape measure moves, how many times has that messed up a cut?
It's supposed to move the width of the blade so that you get an accurate measurement whether you're hooking the board or butting your tape into it
Nice
“glad i’m not those guys” lol
Good video. I’m not much of an edge banding guy either.
That shirt
I'm thinking of getting a track saw. How do you like the Dewalt set up?
I’d probably look at makita or festool
@@FinishCarpentryTV festool is to expensive. Do then why makita
@@FinishCarpentryTV I have the Mafell Track saw how does it compare to the DeWalt I am looking to get a second saw?
Sorry, but edgebanding is definitely not the way to go here. The glue dries out eventually and starts peeling. Turns out you can actually glue 2 boards together to make a wider board. That's what finish carpenters do! Good luck
at 14" wide that glued panel would shrink too much. Probably should have have used hardwood for the edge though.
"big jamb"...funny.
Are you too good for your home jamb?!? Answer me!
Nice job! The devil is in the details.
Your job and you found a solution that you like... but you have a domino... either way, nice work.
I'm just a weekend DIYer, but this looks to be a $1M + home/project and you're going to use plywood on a highly visible entryway!? What do I know, but two pieces of solid wood joined (mitered, butt) and sanded to glass would seem to be more fitting and less chance of a callback as other commenters have said. I do enjoy your videos.
Nice. Never would have thought to use ply with edge banding. I would have spent several hours edge joining and gluing up panels from solid stock. Well, guess that’s why you get paid to do it and I pay you to fix my diy effort.
When you do edge ban
L👀X Great 🤓🇺🇸👍
If I did what u did with the offset cut I would be fired I guess u don't work in high end homes make everything the the same size an mud frame the wall that is how it's done u can see a half inch
Unfortunately in the real world where I live nothing is perfect. But I’m so happy for you that you are so much better than me. I wish you all the best
Why don't u wear work boots ? Don't you think that would be more professional
As predominantly a finish carpenter I can say that work boots aren't necessary. You'll see most of us wearing shoes. Sometimes I wear boots for demolition but usually just wear my converse all terrains for everything because they're waterproof up to 2" and I like the way they feel on ladders and on a roof. They feel safer than a thick sole boot.
@@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter sneakers are for the gym . wait till you step on a nail and it goes threw your sneaker
@@robertackerman3500 Maybe I just keep my job sites cleaner than you. Anything dropped with nails is always yelled out as a "landmine" and is immediately picked up. Going on 10 years with sneakers. I'm not tracking muddy boots through somebody's home to do finish work when it's not necessary because a UA-cam commenter is telling me what attire to wear to work. Sometimes I wear my socks because I can do whatever I want. Did you honestly think this conversation would change mine or Richards choice of footwear?
Guess that's the professionalism union carpenters (24 years) have vs home Reno guys that post help wanted adds on Craig's list .
@@robertackerman3500 I'm not here to disparage one operation or the other because I respect the union but it's my choice to do what I do as opposed to the union that runs rampant with addiction and underachievers. I can easily join the union and I've been offered on multiple occasions. My business partners brother is a union construction manager as well as a building inspector while my uncle is a site supervisor and my cousins are union carpenters, all out of Boston. I've been exposed to many union carpenters, 80% of which with a drinking problem, and they all told me to steer clear unless I enjoy metal studs and board. I prefer fine finish woodworking and full house remodels so I chose my path wisely and it allows a lot of creative freedom. If you genuinely think that the best of the best are union, that's something you need to objectively rethink. I'm doing all of my own work on remodels in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Small and well managed operation of frame to finish, cabinets, decks, additions, tile, flooring, etc. I have an 18x7 enclosed trailer outfitted as a mobile workshop. My customers love me, they don't care if I'm wearing boots or sneakers. When is the last time you had someone tell you they were going to move until you remodeled their house and made it a forever home? I hear it regularly. It's a great feeling. I won't be changing that. I'm only 28 with a lot of fun to have. I enjoy what I do and invested a lot of time and money into being able to do it. I went to school for this and apprenticed under a master craftsman for 5 years. No one is telling me where to be at 6am. That's slavery and they clearly have their hooks in you to the point that you're attempting to belittle an entire branch of carpenters because they don't adhere to your militarized construction practices. That's a ludicrous and aimless stance to have. 24 years and you're so blinded by your lack of exposure that you think footwear determines professionalism. I genuinely pity you for that. Broaden your horizons sir. Have a good day, maybe enlighten yourself. Let me know when you make your next video showing us how to do it all, union style.
