That’s nice I’m in the process of rebuilding my g body glad I came across this
Thanks!
as always , nice nice job, cant wait to see the car done
You and me both 🙂 Thanks for the kind words.
That helps me a lot. You know I am making lower bearing kit for aftermarket. You video teaches me how to assemble those parts, according to this, I can decide what tolerance can be put to the parts when I do manufacturing. Thank you very much
Fantastic! Good luck with your venture. The more parts to restore these the better!
Hello Mr. Mich. Just wanted to say thank you for taking time and effort on helping us all on our endeavor of restoring our G Body cars we all love. Your videos are very detailed and informative. Your teaching skills are amazing and your communication skills as well. Again, Thank You!
Thank you Gabriel, that means a lot to me.
Haven't tuned in for a while. Hope your safe from this crazy virus. Enjoying the vids🏁🍺 Don E=MC 442
Nice job!
Thank you sir
Thank you! I've been trying to find that # for that bearing, you made my day. That will be part of the winter project list.
Hope you have a great day!
@@joemaletta2767 Thanks Joe. I got the info from GBodyForum. Pretty easy too.
I replaced my intermediate steering shaft with a jeep steering shaft, zero play and cheaper, also gives you more room and it compresses so it 1000% easier to install and remove
I've got one on the shelf myself. It will go in on the reinstall.
Yes the jeep shaft is the way to go. I also run it
Astro shaft is better. It needs to be modified and is not a straight bolt it but is worth the trouble. True metal on metal with ZERO PLAY.
Jeep shaft still has some rubber in it and the telescopic part is a bit floppy, even the new ones.
Maybe I missed it, but what is the exact diameter of that input shaft???.... Is it an in or is it 3/4 of an in???
Hey thanks for all the detailed information in your videos. I had a question and maybe you or someone else can help. I have a 78 El Camino, still considered a G body but my steering column end is splined, not a rectangle shape. Will this bearing still work? I can measure the OD of the shaft where the bearing slides over, what size is yours? Thanks?
At the base of the shaft where the bearing fits I mic it at 1.0050. That is pretty much 1 inch around. If you have that at the point where the bearing sits, it's the same. Do a search for Elco bearing update and see if anything else could rule it out, but I think it should work if the OD size is the same.
Mine measures about the same, thanks for the help!
I looked this part up and it says F body also wanted to know is this on a tilt steering wheel or non tilt
It’s a tilt column I worked on. The bearing is used on Jeep vehicles, but it may be used on others. For sure it didn’t come on our cars.
so all i have to do is change the steering shaft bushings because my steering wheel is doing that same thing so i have to change the upper and lower bushings cause i'm tiring of my steering wheel doing that because i don't want to buy another steering column when i can fix the one i already have please tell me what io have to buy i drive a 1996 mercury grand marquis gs
Google it
Do you have to remove the steering column to put this thing on or can I do it from the engine bay??
You can do it on the car for sure. Just remove the intermediate shaft (the shaft between the column and the steering box). It will be a little tighter to get to everything, but not too bad.
@@hutchhiperf bet that up..... Ty!!!!!!
@@BLUUCIFUR All good
I wonder if it fit my 92 k1500
It may. A lot of the columns made were mostly the same. It saved money on tooling by making many parts cross compatible. Try a web forum that includes your truck. I bet someone has done this upgrade there.
I have 1984 El Camino that needs the tilt steering column bushing replace. I can not find Bearings?
Try here gbodyforum.com/threads/steering-column-parts-needed-is-used-the-only-option.80135/
One of the guys is a GM part number guru. I think he quotes the parts you're looking for.
@@hutchhiperf Thank-You
My shaft looks like the one in your other video. And I have a new bearing that looks like the one in this video that you're using but it seems to be too big. Or maybe I'm just doing something wrong, do you absolutely have to take apart the whole steering column just to install?
I thought you said you messed up the bearing under the steering wheel. This video is for the lower bearing upgrade. It's located at the end of the column in the engine bay.
@@hutchhiperf yes I noticed. I was just watching because the shaft was the same as the one I have in my car. And the other video it's different. I don't know if I can complete this so I think I'm giving up on this one. If the whole column has to come apart then I have to pass
Can this be done with the colum still in the car? Thanks
Absolutely! In fact, most times it's done that way. I only took the column out because of all the firewall work. It also made it better to film. Every other video is in the car, which makes filming a chore. Every other one I've done has been insitue.
@@hutchhiperf thanks
Can you do a video on a g body tint upper bearing.
Maybe some day. I do have a second column from an 87 Cutlass.
Your bearing looks a little loose inside the white plastic housing, is that normal?
Since it's the first time I've done this, I assume so.
hutchhiperf I installed a Crown Auto bearing kit and had the same play. I searched on the internet , and I don’t think there’s suppose to be any play. Installed it on an 89 Suburban.
Suburban Ranch has somewhat of the same installation with a bearing kit from steering column services.com. $40 more than the part I purchased from Summit...
@@ricardocontreras8861 Hmmm. Just don't know. At least it's in a very accessible area if I need to change it.
@@ricardocontreras8861 I buy the same as Suburban Ranch and it was loose so I called SCS,I was told they had problems with the manufacturer of the white coupling and have no solution. He told me he has been taking pinstripe tape and wrapping it around the recess part of the bearing 2or3 times. He claims it made for a tight fit. I have not tried it yet. Very nice guy but I got almost $80 in it to have to rig it is disappointing.
do u have the link to the bearing kit
No. But I showed the name on the box and the part number.
@@hutchhiperf ye thank just found it awesome ! also are the jeep steering shafts from ebay good?
@@bryanzamora4559 no idea, sorry
@@bryanzamora4559 I've got one, but I pulled it myself
i think ia can made this upgrade on my 1986 C10 truck too since the bearing in my truck look the same :)
Google that. I think you can. GM used the same parts over many models. I bet the stock rubber ones are the same, meaning the upgrade would be the same. I'm sure someone's done it already.
@@hutchhiperf big thx ! look like your right! :)
