I started using this as soon as I upgraded to 18.5 Beta. The first thing I did was export all the interviews and print them. For me reading through them and highlighting them is a useful first step for the edit. Using this feature in the edit later will be a great time saver. The fact that the transcript is saved in the project and later available in the edit is wonderful.
Wow I haven’t printed in year. But I agree . Just recorded a narration of the latest indictment (……?…) 2 hours. Going in to add the pages to the audio. This is a major speed tool.
Great to know that transcription is available. If there was a way to attach names to each person speaking and timestamps, that would be next level. Thanks for sharing this video
I do wish I was able to edit/delete via transcription, like Premiere and services like Descript let you do. So instead of putting down the parts I want in a timeline, I can lay out the whole thing, and select text that I want to cut out of the video, press delete, and boom it's gone. Maybe that's just a workflow thing I need to switch in my mind, but it was so much easier and satisfying.
This would have been great for a project i did a couple years ago. A bunch of "historic" 8mm films from the 1960s had been compiled in one video and the original camera man (now deceased) had narrated what he remembered while watching the video. Trouble was the clips were not in proper chronological order. My task was to cut up the video and rearrange the clips. I had to transcribe the audio then match it to the clips manually. I ended up with about 30 different clips. A big task!
Is anyone else having an issue getting it to actually DO anything with the edits made to the transcript? Whether I use a clip or the timeline, I can get the transcript fine, I can edit the transcript and remove the silent portions and all that... But then when I hit append, nothing happens? It doesn't get added to my timeline, it doesn't do anything... it's just like "Yeah append, cool, you've pressed that." What am I doing wrong?
Yes. Did you find a solution? Same issue here. Did you transcribe the original file in the media pool, or did you transcribe a timeline? I put ALL my interview files into timelines so I could sync audio. Transcribed the timelines and have had the same issue you had, plus I was unable to create a sub clip from a timeline transcript. Sure it would create an icon that looked like a clip, but that clip wasn't recognised by any timeline I tried to drop it into. Append and Create Subclass both work fine when I transcribe the original file in the media pool. Problem is, when the clip has reference audio but there is still audio to be sync'd, or worse if the video is silent and requires sync'ing, it creates an impossible workflow of syncing audio after splitting something up into a bunch of subclips.
Now that that 18.5 update is out of beta, I finally tried it out for myself, and I gotta say, the AI text editing sucks for removing silence! It leaves all kinds of gaps and extra stuff that is silence, but is not detected as silence. Trying to get it to work currently ADDS time to my workflow. They need a SIMPLE silence remover like Recut or Auto-Editor where you just specify a few things like dB threshold, # of frames to keep before/after each chunk of silence, etc. For silence removal, that works 100x better, and is 100x faster. The transcription is useful for a lot of other stuff, but for silence removal, it's worse than bad, because it does the opposite of saving time.
Have you found a way to use this with multicam clips? What I was hoping for was to be able to use the transcript to trim out portions of a multi-cam clip on the timeline and to be able to find portions of the multicam clip using the text in order to locate places to switch camera angles. So far in my testing, it seems like this is only useful in the source bin and not necessarily the time line. Anyone able to confirm?
I just did some testing and I got this to work! Take your clips and create a multi cam clip. Then transcribe the multicam clip. Use the audio transcription to add into the timeline just as before. but now you are able to go into multicam mode and change the cameras angles as you play the timeline. Very slick! This is going to save me a bunch of time.
Very cool on many levels. This wlll for sure speed up my workflow. What I really need from audio transcriptions at this point is timestamps. Just a little thing that will make my video editing life just a bit easier
Does anyone know if there's a way to automate subtitling using this feature, or at this stage is the best option to copy + paste into the subtitle text field from the transcript? Thanks! 🙂
In a project right now, and man, I would love to be able to "pre-sync" a multi camera sequence and transcribe that, so that I can pull in multiple camera angles off one selection. Does that make sense? That's just how my brain wants to say it.
I love this feature, and thanks for the good demo. I also wish you could delete from the transcript and have the clip removed, if you make the transcript from your timeline. Right now it looks like deleting part of the script deletes the reference in the transcript but not the clip itself, at least that's how my 15.3 beta is behaving. I thought I got it to remove a clip the first time I tried, but after that, the clips are still there but shown crossed out.
Great video as always Casey! In my line of work I edit a lot of interviews, so it will be interesting to try this out. I’m hoping that I can edit out all the “ums” with this tool.
I was actually watching this video to see if there was a way to do exactly what you mentioned. Did you figure anything out? I’ll keep reading the comments.
Good presentation, but... Once you click (x) out of the transcription panel, how do you get it back for later use? An icon appears on the thumbnail of the clip once it is transcribed, but no way to retrieve it. Also, just as an FYI, Premiere Pro does this now in a much better way... the transcodes continue to live in the timeline and more video-by-text edits can happen there... very powerful. Also, Premiere labels different voices if detected, and names them voice 1, voice 2, etc, and are editable. Finally, Premiere has timecodes attached to each transcoded paragraph... So much better. Hopefully, DaVinci will catch up. Thank you for these videos.
😅 Casey really hopping you can help me so right now i have clients asking me about adding captions to there videos and I do own the studio version however it's now allowing me to do the steps that you layout in the video is that because there were all miced up on the rode wireless go 2 mics ? but that wouln't make sense because the transistor is hooked directily into the camera so the clips have there audio attached to the them... Im rustrated and cant this out my friend. Please help me
On studio 19 if i leave davinci and come back the transcribe window vanishes and it either just keep bleeping when click anything on davinci and have to force quit it and start over or you lose the transcriibe window and it won't come back up you have to go into audio / clear transcriptions and start over. i hope they fix this to be a lot better it's a slick tool
Will be really interesting to essentially be able to open up the side bar and "add transition here", "add zoom in/ zoom out here" etc. Its making video editing quicker for podcasts for sure. They gotta try and compete with the Adobe auto-editor lol.
Key Casey, great Video thanks. I started to play around with DeScript over the weekend, and it's very clever. Now my question for you is, the only reason I used DeScript transcription editing instead of DR transcription editing is that I always add a separately recorded Audio File from my Zoom F3. So if I edit using the DR transcript, it works, but only on the Video/embedded Audio file. It doesn't pick up the next Audio file down (which is my main recording) and split that in the same places. Do you see what I mean? Any advice would be really appreciated. I don't want to use DeScript for anything other than this transcription editing for my Videos to remove gaps, repeated words etc, and being able to do all this in DR would negate the need for DeScript completely. Thanks for any help here. I am wondering if perhaps I somehow detach the Video audio file by using the Unlink option, then link the external Audio recording to the Video clip perhaps so that when I edit the transcription, it will also edit the Audio? thanks !!
I'd love to know if there's a workaround for the following: • I've created a timeline and transcribed it using sub-clips that have unique names. • I then use that transcription to edit from into a NEW timeline. • It appears the clips that are cut into the new timeline are not the same as if I used a transcript from a clip (the icon on the bottom left appear as a timeline icon rather than a clip icon). So I'm not able to access "clip attributes" on the audio track as I would if I cut in from transcribed source clip. I'd love your thoughts on this. BTW, thank you for your great videos!
Is there a way to put the subtitles as text instead of subtitle and possibly choose how many words are shown on the screen at a time? With text there is a lot more flexibility to edit the font and stylize.
Is there a way to make a transcript from the timeline? Say if you have a fully edited video ready to render but want to transcribe the draft, instead of doing it on the clip before dragging it into the timeline?
Thanks for the video. I wish there were a way to search for unspoken scenes, e.g., "search for all scenes with a cup." This would help for long timelines. If this becomes available in the future, please make a video.
Can you edit the text, like delete sections and then it would remove that portion in your video? Something similar to Descript? I don't have the paid so I can't test myself 😭
@@akyhne I disagree that it "makes no sense". Whether it is practical and do-able as a product development, I don't know. But I think it would be a helpful feature, as a way to remove unwanted bits of the video by editing the text.
@@danmagoo It makes no sense, because the result will be the same. You'll end up with a lot of clips put together. You might as well do it tge fight way, and insert what you want, not rule out what you don't want. And exactly for the same readonly, mentioned above - it makes, from an editing point - way more sense to insert what clip you need, like you're already doing with in- and out points.
The thing is, whenever I restart DaVinci the tgransciption is gone, even when I save the .txt file. Is there a way where I can leave it until the end of the project?
Can you select multiple lines from a segment? So if you like the first couple lines and some later on and make those separate clips without having to drop each down as a single edit? Hope I explained that right.
Very cool. But instead of just being able to append or insert a selected part of the text, it would be great if we could select text and delete it -- as a way to delete that part of the video itself. Could be great for things like "umm", or stumbling or repetition.
It's a great feature. The most useful thing for me would be 'ah' and 'um' removal -- to be able to delete those and other words and phrases in the transcription and have those deletions be deleted from the video/audio too. Can this feature do that?
been trying this feature out and its pretty amazing, only odd word mistake but that was from a "mumbled" word. Tried the edit feature and found that when highlighting clips and putting in timeline, it often "clips" start or end of word. would be good to have say 10 frames at start and end of each word in the highlighted clip just to make sure words don't get cut and add a nature pause before next sentence.....Thanks for sharing your info Casey, great channel thanks
I havent used this feature yet, but i do have a question. My footage splits my audio into multiple tracks. How would transcription work in that matter? For example, if I have dialog in tracks 1 & 2, but not track 3. I would want the transcription for audio tracks 1 and 2. Is there a way to specify which audio track it looks at and transcribe that way?
I have Davinvi Resolve Studio 18.1.4 build 9. I bought it a few weeks ago. I suppose it will update to 18.5 eventually? Because right now, it tells me that my update is current.
I export the auto generated captions as a srt-file. Open the srt-file in TextEdit en do all corrections and find-replace text etc. Then import the corrected srt-file in Davinci or Final Cut.
Thanks for the video. I wonder if there's a way to go from the timeline to the transcription without having to manually search for it. In other words, how do i get back to the last clip of the transcription?
Be good if it would add time code ref each paragraph so if you print it out to send to director, so they/I don't get lost in endless lines of text. Yes it's the old school way of assembling a first cut but that's how a lot of directors still want to work.
Love this feature! The only thing I would really wanted added is the ability to correct the transcript. All AI transcriptions get some words wrong, especially if it’s a scientific term, an industry term, or even names. I just wish we could correct it manually.
Before long, industry specific LLM will come. But you don't have to correct the wrong word/name for yourself. You can request it again adding your correction term with it. AI does for you. Or from the initial request, you can add the known concern with it. AI needs the context.
Not directly in the text field. You select what you want to insert, then click the append or insert burron. If you want to jump over a part, simply don't highlight that part, but make a new choice and insert/append.
New to da Vinci, sorry for piggy backing on a sorta unrelated vid but is it possible to have strings as constants? I do a lot of sports editing and there are a lot of duplicate strings it would be great to hold in a central location and reference? Like constant properties for the whole project? The problem is I'm sure echoed by others where the same or similar string is reused in different titles or intros etc.. I just haven't been able to figure it out!
just create a new project with your starting settings and duplicate it and rename it to start a new project with those settings. you should also be able to set default settings for all projects.
Is the transcription done locally or cloud based? Can we do it with wifi off? P.S. Love your videos Casey! I went from complete novice to a pretty competent editor because of you!
It would be great if, when creating In & Out points using transcription and turning them into subclips or duration markers, the text from the transcription could be added automatically to the description section of the subclip or marker.
You didn't really seem to cover the most powerful feature that you can just sit there and edit and rearrange from right there within the text you don't have to keep inserting.
The feature is awesome, but editing the text itself could be less cumbersome. I edit german and swiss german videos and the transcript needs a lot of manual corrections. As far as I know, the only way to edit the text is by selecting a range, right-click and the click 'edit text'. Would be way easier if I could edit the text directly in the transcript window...
I dropped a feature request along these lines into the DaVinci Resolve forum a few months ago. Probably just a coincidence. They're pretty clever people.
@@HikingWithCooper A friend of mine has just informed me that Premiere introduced a feature like this before I even made my suggestion to Blackmagic. I'm still a little proud of myself for thinking of a useful feature, even though it already existed. _Less_ proud, but it is there.
Esperando como agua de mayo que incluyan el español cuanto antes. Mientras tanto para mí esta opción es como si no existiera. Sigo usando premiere para hacer las transcripciones, exportarlas y después importarlas en davinci.
I just wish they'd let you create a transcript from everything that's on your timeline. This might already be possible. But that way you can make captions quicker. Just a shame I don't have the cash to buy this.
Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish & Swediah are now available, in the latest beta. No luck for you, I'm afraid.
Casey: The trans script is great but far from perfect, Especially for dialogue that has a lot of background noise. Background that remote mics pickup. Also it should be editable Just to correct the mistakes. Also if Sub Titles have been made from the same footage and Edited/corrected, Doing a transcript should not make the same mistakes that the Sub Titles did. It's all in Beta so hopig for additions. Another Great Davinci Tutorial thanks.
Does it do subtractive editing? I want to look at the transcript, delete the text passages I don’t want, and have that be the video on the timeline. Not select, append, select, append… but select, delete.
@@iamjiroe I also use RX (elements...the big spendy suite may be better...and spendier) and it's much better. One click and reverb is gone. I believe it actually learns the voice and recreates it so it's a perfect recording. I've never tried Adobe Podcast and probably won't because of the Adobe part :)
Another use. I shot an interview with a heavily accented person and so so audio quality. I took the transcript, cleaned it up, generated an mp3 using text to audio app for the video voice, then added B roll over the complete video. I could get away with this because what the person was saying was important, not who he was.

Yeah, downloaded the Beta, played with it for 5 minutes, cancelled my subscription with Descript. Descript was way over priced and I had to export to Davinci in the end anyways. I will forgive the terrible native 4k support in Windows 11 just to save $288 a year.

Be good if it would add time code ref each paragraph so if you print it out to send to director, so they/I don't get lost in endless lines of text. Yes it's the old school way of assembling a first cut but that's how a lot of directors still want to work.
If you export the text ss srt file, there will be time code added.
Agree!
Is the transciption working with other languages other than English?
This is taking Descript its selling value. Or the most important part of it.
I might have missed it but can you cut or delete text and it will shorten the clip accordingly?
Not directly in the text field. You select what you want to insert, then click the append or insert burron. If you want to jump over a part, simply don't highlight that part, but make a new choice and insert/append.
@@akyhne almost a direct descript software replacement, just missing that edit by text feature. I'm still going to buy it though. Thanks
i would like to see it at a timeline level not just a clip level

Do you just talk in youtube videos or do you also do some actual work?
How can I do this with photos?
There are no audio in photos.
Is it only working in english language?
but can resolve text to speech?
It would be great if, when creating In & Out points using transcription and turning them into subclips or duration markers, the text from the transcription could be added automatically to the description section of the subclip or marker.
Yes. This.
100% Game changer.@@HikingWithCooper
Does it work offline or is it cloud based?
You didn't really seem to cover the most powerful feature that you can just sit there and edit and rearrange from right there within the text you don't have to keep inserting.
Does this work for lyrics in a music video?
No! When music is played, it does the same as UA-cam auto subs, and just insert a text saying [music].
The feature is awesome, but editing the text itself could be less cumbersome. I edit german and swiss german videos and the transcript needs a lot of manual corrections. As far as I know, the only way to edit the text is by selecting a range, right-click and the click 'edit text'. Would be way easier if I could edit the text directly in the transcript window...
can u select languages? tnx!!!
I dropped a feature request along these lines into the DaVinci Resolve forum a few months ago. Probably just a coincidence. They're pretty clever people.
Yeah, they don’t read those. Literally everybody has been screaming there for years to allow undocking of panels like Premiere does.
@@HikingWithCooper That would be nice too.
@@HikingWithCooper A friend of mine has just informed me that Premiere introduced a feature like this before I even made my suggestion to Blackmagic. I'm still a little proud of myself for thinking of a useful feature, even though it already existed.
_Less_ proud, but it is there.
You should add studio in the video title as well.
A "find and replace" feature would be great. I'm finding multiple misspellings of the same word.
It would be great if you could send a text file to the client, they edit the text, and then you apply their "paper" edits to your Resolve Timeline.
AUDIO TRANSCRIPTION IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE PAID VERSION
Does it only transcribe English audio? I make videos in Afrikaans...
Around 15 languages will be added in the near future.
Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish & Swediah are now available, in the latest beta. No luck for you, I'm afraid.
@@akyhne Thanks for the info.
This is a dot release that is still in beta. That it works even as well as it does is a Godsend.
It doesn't edit the clips as you delete words as Premiere does. I wish it did that because I hate Premiere.
I believe they are updating it so it does actually
Heck yea direct answer to my itch
when will 18.5 be avalible for everyone?
It already is (?). They’ve actually already released a 2nd dot update.
0:39 - timestamp for reference
we should be able to transcribe audio on the timeline like premier, this is not effective at all
I hope it gets to the point where it can do everything that Gling ai can do in a click of a button.
thanks for mentioning up front that this is for davinci resolve studio not davinci resolve
This looks absolutely amazing, but it's a problem that it's currently English only. Most of my videos are in Norwegian...
Around 15 languages will be added soon. But probably not Norwegian.
@@akyhne Hehe, probably not.
@@MagnusOgnedal We Scandinavians must stick together, and DEMAND changes now!
Just because were tiny, doesn't mean we're not important 😢
Dang! All 3 Scandinavian languages were just added in the beta 18.5 rev. 3.
Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish & Swedish are the new choices.
Descript is having a stroke.
Nah. Descript does tons more. Its studio cleanup is ridiculous. It’s the first best way to remove reverb from dialogue.
Does it do subtractive editing? I want to look at the transcript, delete the text passages I don’t want, and have that be the video on the timeline. Not select, append, select, append… but select, delete.
@@HikingWithCooper I highly doubt it’s better than either RX or Adobe Podcast on that
@@iamjiroe I also use RX (elements...the big spendy suite may be better...and spendier) and it's much better. One click and reverb is gone. I believe it actually learns the voice and recreates it so it's a perfect recording. I've never tried Adobe Podcast and probably won't because of the Adobe part :)
omg i was wondering why I couldn't find this option T.T it is because I'm on free Davinci Resolve wtf
update: i have paid the $300 for this
I hope this comes to other languages
merci :)
Another use. I shot an interview with a heavily accented person and so so audio quality. I took the transcript, cleaned it up, generated an mp3 using text to audio app for the video voice, then added B roll over the complete video. I could get away with this because what the person was saying was important, not who he was.
What can I say. Blackmagic does it again!
YOU ARE A FUCKIN DOPE .. JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I HAVE BEEN WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS FOR SOME TIME AND ITS ALWAYS EASIEST TO FOLLOW AND IM WRITTING IN ALL CAPS CAUSE I WAS TOO LAZY TO RE TYPE THIS WITH THE CAPS LOCK OFF SORRY IM PROMI9SE IM SHOUTING IN JOY THAT YOU ARE AN AWESOME HUMAN BEING
Title should read: Use TEXT to edit your video! - Audio Transcription in Resolve Studio 18.5 Beta!
Yeah, downloaded the Beta, played with it for 5 minutes, cancelled my subscription with Descript. Descript was way over priced and I had to export to Davinci in the end anyways. I will forgive the terrible native 4k support in Windows 11 just to save $288 a year.
guys any way to use it in a cracked version ?
Bye bye Descript!
