What is Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD)?
Metabolic Bone Disease is a condition commonly found in reptiles, particularly those in captivity. It results from a lack of calcium, poor diet, inadequate UVB lighting, and improper care. MBD leads to weakened bones, deformities, and severe health issues if not addressed promptly.
    Signs and Symptoms of MBD:
    Soft or rubbery shell
    Lethargy and lack of mobility
    Swollen limbs
Deformities in the shell or bones
    Difficulty eating and moving
    The Rescue:
We'll take you through the initial rescue process. Upon finding the tortoise, we noted the obvious signs of MBD and took immediate action to stabilize its condition. We'll share the first steps taken, including vet visits, X-rays, and initial care procedures.
    Immediate Care and Rehabilitation:
Dietary Changes: Introduction of a calcium-rich diet, appropriate for a Leopard Tortoise. We'll discuss the best foods to feed, including leafy greens, calcium supplements, and the importance of a varied diet.
UVB Lighting: Setting up proper UVB lighting to ensure the tortoise gets the necessary exposure to synthesize vitamin D3, crucial for calcium absorption.
Hydration and Environment: Ensuring a well-hydrated and appropriately humid environment to support overall health.
    Long-term Care:
The road to recovery is long and requires patience. We’ll outline the ongoing care regimen, monitor progress, and adjust the care plan as the tortoise improves. Regular vet check-ups and continuous observation are key to successful rehabilitation.
    Prevention Tips for MBD:
To prevent MBD in your tortoise, ensure:
A balanced diet with adequate calcium and vitamin D3.
Proper UVB lighting and a suitable habitat.
Regular health check-ups with a reptile vet.

Thanks for watching! You are right. I was giving it to her twice a week but I agree it should be more like every 2 days. Thank you!

Hi Shane! Thanks for reaching out. You have an awesome page as well. I am not selling tortoises but can suggest a few places if you guys are looking. Reptile conventions are also always a good place to look. If you're daughters are really into it I would suggest private breeders.

@@shane-jahiart1248 For sure! How old are your daughters? Do they want Leopards? Babies could be delicate but you can probably get one started from an AWESOME breeder from $350-$500. I would personally go for the something over the 4 inch mark because they are so fragile when they're younger and so much can go wrong. My next video is actually about creating a baby proof enclosure for them. Check out Rodriguez Chelonians - I just purchased a 4 inch south african from there that will grow to 20 inches facebook.com/RodriguezChelonians/ OR Byron Pitre... also an amazing breeder but I have not purchased from him facebook.com/pitrespardalis/ AND last if you want the smaller species that only grows to 1 foot to 18 inches "Babcoki's" then hit up this breeder? I have purchased from her as well. www.morphmarket.com/stores/conchovalleytortoises/ - Most important is that you get over 4 inches. You can also try craigslist which I have also done. You want to get the biggest tortoise you can find for what you can afford. The good thing about this species is that they are not big diggers. We also have russian tortoises that we can never find. they are cheaper and less work because they hibernate. You'll also need an outdoor pen of some kind. Once you find a Tortoise you like, we can go from there.

¡Gracias por pasar! Estamos tratando de minimizar los efectos de que ella haya sido criada en un ambiente seco durante los primeros 3 años de su vida. Su crecimiento se ha visto frenado pero ahora está creciendo.
