- The actress opens up about her Hulu documentary Kid '90, recruiting some of her famous friends to participate in it and how the process made her realize how much pain some of her friends who have since died -- including Jonathan Brandis -- were in at the time.
I am glad to see so many references about Jonathan Brandis.
What many of you may not know is that Jonathan also documented a large part of his life with his trusty camcorder. He and his friends would make home movies. He would film them while they were hanging out and having fun. He would film their outings and there were several mini documentaries, for lack of a better word from the teen mags.as I understand it, most of them are in the custody of Greg and Mary. A few close friends and family members got some. There is even rumoured to be a video of Jonathan singing Bohemian Rhapsody st a karaoke bar floating around somewhere.
The story of Jonathan Brandis is a story that needs to be told.
The sooner the better.
🥰🥰🥰
Wish there was more about Jonathan Brandis, was a fan it's sad he passed
Completely agree with you.
Same! He’s my favorite childhood actor.
Ngl I wish there was a documentary that was dedicated to Jonathan
@@wilhelminalorrainetan8822 why? he made bad life choices. there are other things to do than acting.

Sad to see Jonathan Brandis, Justin pierce, Brad Renfro and River Phoenix go. My childhood. So many more
I would love to see those tapes.
I Wish there was more content about Jonathan 😓

They weren't that close in his later years evidently. The whole documentary only captures him in his teens while Jon did make it to 27.
agree with comment above ^ i don't think they were that close after her teens and leaving the la scene, idk. it would've been nice though, from what i could base from the documentary, jonathan seems like a sweet person even though we know he had battles he was facing. i hope and i'm sure there will be a documentary for him one day - or maybe there are already
@@Nebulation I know that I mean I wish there was more content about him in general
Ditto.
I’m so glad to see how many people do remember Jonathan fondly.
Jonathan Brandis 💜

I was skeptical about this upon hearing about it. Frye was like many successful child actors whose talents did not transition, despite efforts, into a successful adult actress. Her lifestyle was very Bohemian and her funds modestly spent in how she and her single mother lived. Their house was full of people and lots of minors all being allowed to eat, drink, smoke and party in the pool. Her mother created an environment that was the backdrop for what Frye lived. Her video doc of her party years in LA and NYC and reunions with old boyfriends and friends were very intense. Her recognition of friends who committed suicide and or died was incredible. Her written musings in the 1990’s were very poignant. In short this was a great documentary that certainly made me cry and think of my old friends and what it was like growing up in the 1990’s. A very powerful piece from an actress I think many of us forgot about. Not anymore. Watch it.
Thank you!! Bryn Erin stage name
left me feeling empty.
My gawd that was dumb

Beautifully said Daniel. I grew up watching these 90 actors and it hit hard. So sad about the suicides. I think this documentary was done phenomenally and it just showed kids growing up in the industry. I loved it and cried too.
jonathan🥺🥺
This was not just the 90's, this was the 90's for child-actors.
I always love when someone mentions Jonathan Brandis.
Same. I wish someone would do a doc on him ❤️
He will never be forgotten❤️
@@ALEXANDRAMATTHEWS I've been saying the same thing a lot lately lol.
I wish his parents would do a documentary on him. Be it written or video. It could happen sometime.
He's remembered by many, and theyre grown up now.

Soleil and Jonathan went to the same high school together and graduated in the same class.
But it was not a high school per see, right? It was an acting school, right?

Jonathan Brandis... 😭😭😭
I would do anything to see his Jack Dawson (Titanic) and Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars) auditions.
Hell, I would love to see Episode II and Episode III with him as Anakin. I like Hayden, but I feel Brandis would've been awesome in the role.
Deep and touching documentary.
I loved Jonathan Brandis!
She still talks to his parents:( she lost so many people I feel so bad for her🙁 if only johns friends were their for him more he would have still been here, every photo of John and her she looks so happy and she lost him and most of her friends:(
I had the biggest crush on johnathan brandis
She loves people!! You don't see a person like that these days!😮
Brandis 🐞🙏🏻🖤
These private new recordings from Jonathan only stir you up even more. We only know a few specific time frames from his life and only from the media, television and old youtube videos. I am now 45 years old and followed Jonathan's career as a fan and voice actor for him in Germany for a very long time until the mid-nineties. At some point my interests also changed and as a young man I pursued other things. Of course, Jonathan always stayed in the back of my mind, but I didn't deal with him anymore, so years later it was a shock and a great loss for me to learn that he had passed away in such a tragic way. May God give his soul the peace it needs and ease his parents' grief. Now I came across Kid90 by chance and saw these private recordings of him and all sadness and loss came up in me. He was a big part of my youth. We have to let Him rest.
How did he pass away?
Unfortunately, he started suicide by hanging in November 2003. According to media reports, he was not killed immediately but succumbed to internal injuries caused by hanging in the hospital the next day.
the thing is, they will always stay close in spirit when we connect to them; be it through their videos, their voice, pictures... Jonathan's spirit is probably around you since you connected to him. so when they cross your mind for a second, or you think about them, that means they're with you.
He was just one of the guys who liked a simple life; on the other side he talks about his dad's love of condiments (ketchup) and how a barbecue should always have lots of sauces. Also he will take a giant bottle of orange juice with him wherever he goes.
So if you have a bbq with friends and think about him all of a sudden; it probably means he's there as well, drinking beer and hanging out with you guys. 🍔🍺
Man, what roles of his did you dub? People don´t talk about this enough but he had a super distinctive voice- very deep and with a lot of personality.
I remember watching Punky Brewster in the 80s. I was born in 77, so... I was the core audience. Anyway, she had a friend on the show named 'Miles'. I thought that was a cool name. I wanted my name to be miles. Haha. That's my dumb kid thinking and douche memory. We all have them. I would hate to have been named 'Miles'. So glad I didn't pick my own name.
Loved Johnathan Brandis in Lady bugs, Seaquest and the original IT.
I still love Jon Brandis soooo much!
Soleil now looks like an early 2000s alanis
Today Commemorates Jonathan's 45th Birthday
I grew up with all of them!! Loved them all.
For me, personally, seeing Justin Pierce was the most pleasant surprise of the whole doc!
Perry Farrell was the strangest.
Same I love that dude to death I'm super sad he died
I wish I kept my old vhs tapes. Some old movies are impossible to find on dvd.
If it’s any consolation, they would probably be unwatchable by now.
@@seaturtlepoppy7679 There’s a way to transfer VHS footage onto 📀
@@chaneestatengamble2259 - I haven’t done that in nearly 15 years! I was thinking more about the ... celluloid tape (??) and how it degrades over time.
I saved a bunch of mine!!!
This was such a sad but honest point in the movie. Yes they were her friends and because of that she carried guilt with their depths which is understandable but at the time she had so much of her own life events going on it wasn't her burden to bear. I'm glad that as an adult now she's able to use her healing as a platform to reach out to others.
Just got done watching this documentary loved it took me back I turned 13 in 94 good times
I turned 13 in 1994 too...we got the best of both decades... To be a kid in the 80’s and to be a teen in the 90’s....so awesome
Amazing!
RIGHT?! Teenage nostalgia overload F/R!
She’s Roxy from Sabrina in my mind
same looks bascially the same too
I document so much of my life even when I was young and a teen in the 90's so I feel Soleil on so many levels! I used to take my camera to school and all the jobs I've had when I was a teen cuz I knew one day I would want to remember! My friends and family always poked fun at me but I'm so glad I kept going! I've had several loved ones pass away so those videos are golden!❤🙏
That’s beautiful
Jonathan Brandis😞💔
Jonathan Brandis is so cute
Remember her in Friends punching Joey👊🏻😆
Wow I was always the one with a camera & camcorder in my youth! I have tonnes of photos, negatives, tapes it will be so nice to show my kids & I’m glad I did this x
I know her for Sabrina
I'm so glad Soleil made and kept the footage and audio; such fond memories from her and her actor friends youthful time. I Love It! Good job Soleil! 😘
grew up looking up to Punky 🥺🥰
One of the best parts of the documentary is that you get to hear from most of these people directly and not through heresy
One the other things - and it's a two-edged sword - is hearing the real people at the time without filters. Hindsight is, unfortunately, 20/20, and there were a lot of red flags that no one saw then (or chose not to see.)
Loved the documentary. Wished it touched base on brandis more.. but let's be real. This was just a documentary about all the dudes she dated/hooked up with lol
It's really not that rare that the 90s was documented on tape... this dude is acting like Soleil was the first human to ever use a video camera.
Of course it isn't rare. lol
People were not just filming stuff in the 80's but also documented on tape which is what was being talked about!
My dad did some documented stuff on tape in the 80's + 90's on his JVC-GR-C1 video camera.
@@mikekaraoke do u know what camera she used??
Only because many of her friends were famous actors.
She’s a cool chick

Rodney Harvey too, his addiction and death was so sad.
Oh no I didn't know about Steve's brother

What documentary is she talking about ?
Kid 90
I remember her in Sabrina Teenage Witch! Soo pretty still I wanted to Look Like her in highschool ❤
I thought the documentary was a bit braggadocios
Pretentious too; Brandis died in 2003; I'd like to know when was the last time that she had even talked to him was by that time.

Punky Brewster looks great in leather.
Rest in peace Shannon “Savannah” Wilsey
I use to fill lifescast type video way before UA-cam in 1998ish. Have not watched them in years.
Beyond #MeToo, Hollywood really needs to revamp its treatment of child stars.
I don't know, offer counseling at an early age and be very protective.
Because it's a tough, tough, tough business.
Wil Wheaton once described himself as "extraordinarily lucky and successful" to be on a hit series as a regular for three years.
It's like, even if Brandis acting career in Hollywood was over (which it wasn't) there were other jobs. Frustrating.
It was so good.
Where can I watch this documentary?
What are the names she mentions before Jonathan's??

@@Jeanette1994 I think I’ve heard once that Meeno Pelucci spelling? was her brother? That’s who I was referring to I think I’ll go Google lol yes I was correct boy this 60 year old brain has still got it lol only it’s spelled Peluce! I think he was the cute little boy in one of my favorite series back in the day and educational as well, the voyagers loved that show and that poor John Erik Hexum who later accidentally killed himself by shooting a blank too close to his head!! It was powerful enough to kill him at that range, just fooling around got him killed! poor man! he was so handsome and had gorgeous eyes! I heard someone got some part of his eyes transplanted?

100th like!
I like Soleil Moon Frye but someone explain how Ounky Brewster is some iconic star? What does anyone know or care about in her career other that that? Let's get some perspective people.
Punky Brewster was an icon, and Soleil appeared on a lot of iconic shows from the 80s and 90s. She was that girl who used Screech for his pizza sauce, she was on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and plenty of other shows. She was literally everywhere in the 80s and 90s.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I found Soleil herself to be awesome for not being like other Hollywood types. I think she chose to fade into the background to focus on marriage (she married in 1998) and raising her children. She did start an organic baby shop or some such thing long before Jessica Alba (if I'm not mistaken), she was unafraid to be photographed in stained shirts with messy hair like "This is the reality of raising babies hands on." She also chose nice yet unique names for her children, like Poet, Lyric and Story. (Jagger is cool but too Rolling Stones and doesn't fit the flow of the other 3 names.) She seems like a genuinely kind person, but maybe she's just a really good actress. Still, some famous folk ooze their assholery in interviews. Soleil seems like she's just happy to be there sharing her experiences.
@@gypsywoman9140 You need to re read the definition of "icon"; and also, "literally".
Punky was an icon for a lot 1980s little girls. I was even one of them. To the point I tried to dress like her.
Punky Brewster, Silver Spoons, ALF and Small Wonder were my sh&t !!! I love personal video docus from the 80’s ever since I seen Mel Gibson’s unauthorized Lethal Weapon 2 HBO special. Though, rouge non studio meddling is raw. Seen one the other day of Avril Lavigne doing a on the run set up performance of her 2000 live set in Times Square. The people she encountered off the record is fascinating. Jonathan Brandis is something that still pains. He auditioned not too long before his death to play teenage Anikin Skywalker in AOTC. He didn’t get the part. No offense to Hayden Christiansen but those prequels would had been completely different.
@@tobeyntucker Pretty much everyone even remotely castable auditioned for Anakin Skywalker (Some time see the auditions for the younger version and see if you think they chose the right kid - extend that to the choice for the older version.) Hayden wasn't helped much by the script or direction, but check out "Life as a House" to see if you think he had the acting chops.
True, JB would have been better, (scarier for one) but given the same script and directorial restrictions...
Jonathan went to an audition for a TV show once where they were looking for a "Jonathan Brandis type", and didn't get the gig because he wasn't (?)
Weak
