All I can say is THANK YOU. Navmeshing has always been my out right bane. I put a lot of blame on it with tutorials that are done is such away that you'd already need to know how to do it to understand what's going on (as in a lot of skipped/missed vital steps) Sadly many tutorials out there do such and it's kinda meh. This is just nice and clear and to the point, and covers many thing's that I've not seen in other tutorials.
@@Darkfox127 Thank you so much for all the tutorials, you have helped me and so many other people, you have awesome content and I will always appreciate it brother 🙏
i have what may seem like a stupid loaded question, but can navmesh be applied to objects used in the creation kit, making it so the player doesn't need to do the navmeshing at all. like an example is, using objects that you can just snap in place that have already been navmeshed so you don't have to? and perhaps a cut out tool for objects like trees houses and such to be used to take navmesh away in circumstances where an object doesn't need navmesh under it, so the NPC will walk around instead of walking into the object? i know the game has an auto navmesh feature, but that has been known to have issues from what i have heard, but just imagine every object has built in navmeshing already built into the objects within the creation kit, you still have to place the objects, but the days of making triangles will be done because they are built into the objects into the kit. so all you have to do is apply the object, say landscapes where there is dirt or grass built in navmeshing, but this also makes me wonder if the bottom of a tree could have something embeded into it to has a negative navmesh thing built into it, so that you don't need the tool to cut out the object and everything "JUST WORKS" as Todd would say.
Just wanted to say - awesome video thank you! You did skip how to actually make a triangle though and I had to google it but everything else was wonderful and very helpful!
Thank you for sharing what you know about navmesh. This is a great starting point video. No one person ever has all the answers to a particular topic on modding, but I find that your videos are the best place to start. Thanks again!
Oh my gosh.. This has helped me so much! I feel like I finally understand how to Navmesh and that it isn't nearly as difficult as I had heard or believed. Thanks a bunch for this, it is a modding life saver.
I've been slaving over a player home for the last few weeks and I'm at the point of navmeshing. I like to think I'm fairly confident with interiors. But like many others, exteriors are the bane of my modding existence. Thanks much for your videos DF, couldn't have done a lot of things in my mod without ya.
This is my 1st time using the sck to make/edit navmeshes and this tutorial helped a lot to get the basics, but 1 thing I had trouble with was positioning the vertices so from file>preferences i lowered the value next to "snap to grid" and now it snaps to smaller increments and the results are neater. Probably this kind of precision isn't needed but it pleases my eye.
Thank you Dark Fox for all of your tutorials. This one is very helpful because I had a navmesh error warning when I merged files, so now I know how to go about checking and fixing them (hopefully!).
It takes a bit of practice but Thank you so much Darkfox. Your vocal articulations are the strongest and most helpful asset you have when compared to other tutorials. I got the Navmesh thing down 90%. I just had to play around with it. It sure is easier than scripting quests thats for sure!
just wanted to leave a thank u for alot of ur videos. u and some others have helped me loads to learn about creation kit and make my own mods to share with others :)
Love your tutorials, most of what Ive learned about skyrim modding has come from watching these, I do have a question though on navmesh. Is there anything I need to watch out for say navmeshing down stairs or across catwalks and such?
You have helped me through so much. I've been working on a mod almost 130 Hours in with a ton of help from you, I was wondering does navmesh affect spawners? I have a greenhouse that I put a bee spawner in and the bees fly through the walls and into the cell void. I think it's because I haven't navmeshed, but I can't be too sure. Any ideas?
I still dont know how to create a triangle, it justs keep picking other triangles. and I have no clue how you raise them, they travel horizontal, no z axis movements. grammar is bad cus ive been at making a mead hall next to my windstad manor for like 5 or 6 hours now
How do you actually create one of those triangles? You said you'd make one to show us but, when I place three vertices, they just appear as three separate dots.
I have a question: In one of my custom homes I had to shift some rocks down a touch to better form a ledge to work with. This has lef to a lot of the navmesh floating in the air. If I tell it to floor, it kinda goes all wooky. I can click and drag the mesh around, but I am unable to move it manually up or down. Am I going to have to redo ALL the navmesh that was on the hill or is there away to grab and pull the mesh down as it's in the right shape, but in the air.
Thank you, this has helped me immensely. Although, I was wondering if you knew if when creating a new mod, loading it as active plugin, when modifying the terrain and adding houses, is deleting navmesh to remake them a bad practice? To be more specific, if I would decide to recreate the navmesh of a certain part now obiously i would probably not do it the exact same as it was initialy but let's assume I remade the navmesh of a part and the result is identical to what it was initial, can it create some edit to be rectified with a mod cleaning tool? In other world, even if the scene has changed immensely, should you always try to edit the current navmesh, or is it safe to scrap it and start over from scratch.
I tried both interior as exterior nav mesh, but for some odd reason I do not get the wished results. Followers refuse to walk on the touched or new nav mesh on the exterior cell. To make it worse, they refuse to get inside my house for some reason (simple clone of excising house and re-used without any changes besides removing the NPC's inside. What is causing this and how to fix this problem? Every damn house I try to make has this problem for some reason.
Thanks for the tutorial. I am trying to fix some Navmesh in Riverwood with Expanded Towns and Cities v14.3.1 mod. The NPCs get bottle necked near the center of town. And some are trying to get to the Sleeping Giant Inn. Going to see if I can fix it.
ok so .. HELP if in navmesh i left click and drag i get a section box.. aka nothing happens.. if i right click i get a single point, HOW do i do a friggen trangle, whats up with my settings where do i fix this, i completely uninstalled and reinstalled Skyrim and the Creation Kit, wiped everything and started over.. i have previously done navmesh but it was years ago, someone take pity, help.
on an unrelated note (i think atleast) whenever I change the terrains height NPCs will clip through the ground and i don't know what causes this, please help. great tutorial btw
And how about making navmesh first and then putting certain objects into the cells? I would just remove triangles that pass through my objects. Will this work?
+Micha In some cases you can make items you place down cut into the navmesh but I would have to look at how that works. Just make sure you have no triangles going underneath new objects you place down or NPCs will bump into it and get stuck.
Fallout 4 is a different Creation Kit. These are Skyrim CK tutorials and it's what I'm most familiar with. I probably won't be doing Fallout 4 tutorials for some time if at all.
any videos on why this system exits? what can't the engine accept, a large square for that "sqaure" room and then cut things out of it like the fire pit. seems to be an engine system that is in desperate need up an update.
Good tutorial. I however will disagree that the Generation>Recast-Based Gen is a useless feature. You have to ignore what the Bethesda dev said about that. The lower the radius, the more you have to clean-up but also the less refinement you have to do (like around corners and stairs). Try using a slightly lower setting than 32. You can navmesh an exterior or interior pretty quickly with the right balance. Honestly I think the Bethesda dev who did the original tutorial was just being a bit of dick when he produced it. He didn't seem like he wanted to take the time to explain to the plebs how his fancy contraption works. Admittedly I've done the same when I had to explain tech to people so I can spot the behavior.
Tutorial incomplete. Higher areas over top of previously navmeshed terrain (like catwalks and towers) have not been covered. Also, minor details were missed showing that he ASSUMES that people already have certain information like linking new navmesh to old and filling in vertices. I couldn't find the tool that did that. Make NO ASSUMPTIONS AT ALL about what someone already knows. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS assume they have noknowledge WHATSOEVER of the subject material. (Particularly as it is not a classroom environment where they can simply ask.) Any ambiguity at all is a sign of amateur teaching. Just because someone knows how to do a thing is NOT instant qualification to TEACH that thing. Teaching is an ENTIRELY different skill.
Almost 12 years after the release of the game, and your tutorials are still helpful and informative. Thanks!
this guy makes the best tutorials, even better than bethesda tutorials.
This one thanks you for your kind words. 8)
Bethesda would only teach you how to clip plants through walls
Your mom
Right?!?
I completely agree with you bro, Darkfox127 is my go to guy.
All I can say is THANK YOU.

I'll admit, I love navmeshing. I don't do it straight away, but love to spend an hour at it. I feel the same way about shoveling snow, though.
+Morgan Blank You are the only human in existence that likes to shovel snow.
+xweert711 hahahahahahahsuhdas
You guys get snow...
ill call you when i have 15-20 cells of edited terrain and 20-30 buildings spanning through many cell transitions to navmesh next time....

As Always, THANKS DARKFOX! Fantastic video. I always learn some really great stuff from your videos. You are very good at what you do!
agreed, these tutorials are super-useful
Really help but I'm still not sure if you want bigger triangles or smaller ones if you have the choice
Thank you for all these wonderful tutorials!
Thank you so much, Darkfox, for your tutorial!
Hello DarkFox.
How do you hide and reappear objects (like a banner, a cabinet, a npc) please? Thank you.
For anyone reading this, one hides objects by selecting them and pressing 1 and one can unhide all objects with Alt-1
Thankee. I never would have figured this out on my own.
Fantastic tutorial, explained exactly what I needed to know.
Well way better voice or sound than other guide.
All I heard was, now selecting them and tap aey... So what was the button to tap at the end?
I thought I knew most of navmesh, but this cover-thingie I never knew. The more you know

When you have three vertices selected, just press "A" on your keyboard and that will make it a triangle.

What if I want to NavMesh a figure 8 pattern for an NPC patrol around an area?
Good tutorial. Thanks.
How do I connect two existing navmeshes. The navmesh around the Riften Docks are broken and will not for the life of me allow me to connect them.
I JUST released my first mod! Thanks for teaching me navmesh :D

How do you delete a navmesh?? You just do it without saying.
on an unrelated note (i think atleast) whenever I change the terrains height NPCs will clip through the ground and i don't know what causes this, please help. great tutorial btw
Or u could just do the thing where the program navmeshes a cell or world space for u but that option is not very accurate so ur way is mostly better

How do you make a bridge? You only talked about editing one
So helpful, thank you.
