- Gentlemen never sail to windward. Does that mean they only ride a bike downhill too?
☝️ Drop us a quick "Ta very much" via Super Thanks! ☝️
If the aphorism is true, then there are no gentlemen aboard SY Esper. Because for the next 100 miles or so we did just that, in varying degrees of discomfort and difficulty. And mostly with the engine on.
You may be wondering why on Earth we'd put ourselves in this ridiculous situation. Well, it certainly wasn't our choice...

Yes, they do say that "gentlemen never sail to windward." And they say it for a very good reason. Once the lines are cast off, the mooring ball dropped, or the anchor weighed, a sailing vessel is the least likely place on the planet that you are likely to find a gentleman.
And in the rare instance that you find a gentleman on board, a long beat in lumpy waters will most certainly change his temperament, and never for the better.
Thank you for the content again and all the best for the new year.
🤓😄😁 Yes, it can get a little tense sometimes... Happy new year to you too! Liz 🙏
Australian dermatologists say to use skin moisturizer continuously on your face, ears, neck and any exposed skin on a daily basis. Stay safe and fair winds...
Yes, we use one with an SPF 50 rating, but Jamie forgot to put it on! We also cover up with hats, high neck Ts and long sleeves. You're so vulnerable on a boat. 👌 Liz
101st desktop shipmate LIKE, 631st "Happy New Year 2023" view, with greeting included. Maybe y'all need a T-shirt that reads "Engines R 4 Sissies".
Haha! We'd still be there in the atoll without Esper's engine! 🤓 Liz
Ya gotta go where ya gotta go!
Happy adventures in 2023!
You're right! 🤓 Liz
Happy New Year, guys! Loved the introductory graphics and -- an FTB First, I believe -- Bossa Nova! Even with a visa requirement looming over your heads you never lose your aplomb; that is the trait of gentlemen!! Regards. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
I love that intro too, Jamie just sprung it on me. I record the voice-over without seeing the edit, so smiled when I saw it. Love the calm of the music contrasted with the craziness of the conditions. 🙏 Liz
I started to type a comment and decided I couldn't top Daniel's!
Adore the intro graphics and music!!!
Cheers, me too! Liz 🙏
Cheers.
Sama sama! Liz 🙏
Like the Tug going two knots, we working class stiffs have schedules we must keep to get paid. The "Gentlemen" referred to in the old adadge didn't even saddle their own horses!
I bet they never did the washing up either... Yes, lazy bar stewards, those "gentlemen"! 🤓😁 Liz
I like the new intro graphics and style. Nice. HNY!
Thanks for letting us know. Jamie was having a bit of fun, and it seems people enjoyed the intro enough to remark on it! 😁 Liz
Interesting Art-Deco feel to the start sequence - you should have added a flapper in a boa and cloche 😄Your sail into swell and wind was very reminiscent of the conditions we frequently get in western Scotland and the north coast of Ireland. We find in those conditions it is better to roll the genoa away and pull out the main, flatten it as much as possible and pull it right over to windward on the traveller. That way we can get some sail assist as close as 10° to the wind and since you have two "main" sails thanks to Esper's design it might work even better for you.
No gentlemen on our boat which is just as well as Salty Lass loves going close hauled. It is easily her favourite point of sail...
Yes, totally agree about close hauling, Esper's fave too (the ketch/cutter set-up is a winner). 🙏 Liz
Awesome intro Liz 🤠
Jamie's work, I just read the words! Cheers. 😃🙏 Liz
Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for commenting! Liz
Seen older people and heard stories about those who sailed without and engine, even docked with sails. Those are called experienced sailors.
And how do you think the Vikings and past times made it across oceans.
The Vikings rowed. Liz
@@followtheboat Jeanne from British Columbia sailed her boat solo around the world non-stop at the age of 76 without the use of an engine. The engine was sealed. Check out Guiness book of records.
Jeanne 👸is a superstar. Liz 👌
@@followtheboat I was talking to her on a daily basis (on 7.120 Mhz LSB South African Maritime Mobil Weather Net at 13:35 UTC) while she was sailing around the Cape of Good Hope on her record breaking single handed non-stop trip around the world.
Loved the music intro
It makes a nice change from twanging guitars! 🤓 Liz
Happy 2023!
Hope it's a good one! 🙏👌 Liz
That was a swell episode !…🤭 hope 2023 brings flat seas and all that you wish for… Happy new year!
Cheers! Hope 2023 is good to you too. 🙏 Liz
Generalizations eventually fail but are still sometimes useful. Same with engines. I sail to windward and have no engine. :-)
Us too! 3sper is extremely happy sailing to windward. 🤓😁 Liz
I'm trying to remember an old saying, something about "rough with the smooth"?
Happy New Year and thanks for all the entertainment.
Yes! Rough with the smooth is just about right in the cruising world. 🥃🤓 Liz
That sixties, very English, intro.... Wow that brought back memories. \;-)
Hehehe 👍♥️ Liz
Nice intro and good job trading narration on this vid, now I know why few sail the Molucca Sea!
Cheers! We sailed it so no-one else has to... Liz🙏
Happy New Year Mates!
Backatcha! 😃🙏 Liz
We have a navigation aid at the top of our mast. It points to where-ever you want to go. Others call it a wind indicator.
Ours is broken... I'm supposed to be going up the mast soon to fix it. 😳 Liz
the island with the Moat is sinking . the outer reef was its Largest size , when the island does sink it will be an Atoll .
Brilliant, thanks for the info! Liz 🙏
Nice intro! Graphics and music were a bit old time "Bond"ish!
Yes, that Latin-groove is quite 60's. 👌😁 Liz
Nice!
Loved the retro intro. Were you going for " The girl from Ipanema"? Anyways, I was along for the ride. Reach into those creative juices again! I struggle figuring where you are going? Philippines or Raja Ampat?
Thanks again!
We struggle all the time. Both Raja and Philippines are on the cards... I'm going for "Tall and tanned and young and lovely..." but I can't see that happening. 🤓😁 Liz
Great hat! Who makes it?
It was a cheapie picked up in Langkawi with no label. But I nagged him into buying a replacement this year, so he now has a fancy-schmancy Tilley hat of a similar style. 😁 Liz
@@followtheboat A Tilley eh? Good choice!
How long could you travel on engine power only? How much fuel do you carry? In miles please. LOL.
No idea! The tanks hold 360 litres and we carry around 200 litres in jerry cans on deck. How far that would get us is entirely up to the weather and sea state. 🤷🏼♂️🤓😁 Liz
@@followtheboat Makes sense. I was curious since you do motor a lot. Guess you never had a problem. Safe sailing!!
Indonesia is famous for no wind or too much wind. Luckily the destinations make up for it! Liz
As I sit here working a 10 hour day many days out of the week, I think how you guys do not have any requirements on your time other than what it takes to make these videos and sail around. Please stop complaining about seas, winds and squalls. These are the things you should absorb without even thinking about it. Actually, I like a rolling sea when I have any time to boat.
Ahh, if only your summing-up were true and our lives were that simple... Have a great 2023. Liz
