Hello my darlings! I hope that you're both fine! Thanks so much for your wonderful vlog, both informative in a 'boaty' way, and also amazingly informative about where you are!😊 It looks absolutely gorgeous 😍 Have a wonderful time, keep safe, and take care! I honestly can't say 'fair winds' because whilst watching a 'sign off' from you, my dog Tommi, a Terrier mix, rescued from Poland, let off a few little peeping farts in his sleep on the sofa next to me😂🤭 He woke up and looked at me as if to say 'omgoodness, human, how disgusting'!, before getting down from the sofa in disgust 😅 All love and best wishes to you both, Claire and co, Berlin ❤❤❤
Glad to catch up with you after a long while and can't believed you haven't got hundreds of thousands of subs by now. Always love your videos. Particilarly good technical info here, great graphics too. Ill be following more closely now.
While you were talking anchoring on steep slopes I was thinking about the possibility of using 2 anchors, one deep and one shallow normal to the shore. You’d need to have a rigging ring on one, the second set anchor with the ring bolted to that line, to create a center swinging point maybe with a swivel. I have to think about that and do an experiment. If I think it makes sense then I will get a “ring” laser cut in 12mm SS plate. Still thinking about how to recover it safely. It might require a float and recovery line attached to the highest anchor.
Most chart plotters have anchor alarms these days. An app isn't a bad idea, either. We find that Jamie always wakes up if there's something amiss. If the conditions are bad, or we're worried about other boats, then we do anchor watch in the cockpit! Liz 👌⚓😀
Jamie: Regarding accuracy of maps, perhaps you could contact the provider of the map(s) and ask what the accuracy of the map positions is/are? Ex: You are at coordinates x,y, what is the accuracy (in centimeters preferably) of what the map shows? Obviously considering the accuracy of your own GPS/calculations. Perhaps you could overlay Google satellite images over your map(s) just to get a better idea of your position. Yes, I know I'm overthinking this 😛. Liz: Do you fish while at anchor/mooring? Rod, reel, traps, pots, lines, bow & arrow, hand thrown spear, spear gun? 🐟🐠🐡🦈🐙🦀🦞🦐🦑 Regarding freeing a stuck anchor, would it/could it be useful to use an alderny ring and float to help free the anchor? 🏐🔗⚓ 😄👍👏👏👏🐻
In the past, Jamie has contacted Navionics about the inaccuracy about some of the remote places we cruise and eventually adjustments are made. You couldn't do it all the time, it would be a full-time job here! We use satellite maps in tandem with the charts. As well as our own eyes, of course. I used to fish at anchor for Millie, but not any more. We've never tried an Alderney ring, I think they're for smaller boats? Just more stuff to carry on board, but mainly you want to be able to get away fast, so it's one more bit of faffing... Cheers! 🙏🎣⚓ Liz
@@followtheboat we have youtubers fly into california for the usa experience ..lol they think every where is a short drive takes 5 days to cross north america as a truck driver would not two hours..lol then they realize how far florida disney world is from disny land.. they make me laff a lot.. i love your channel and the others who share their arrival in usa.. also we dont have one single language here it depends on where your at, lots of accents to try and figure out.. we all speak english but we got ky / tnn red necks, alabama southerners, and boston mass all talk a little diferently.. being a truck driver otr for 8 yrs, i learned most of our accents and phrases, we are a mixing bowl over here caint hardly wait to travel by water.. i think next year is my calling..
Very informative. Thank you! Aspiring sailor here. Q: On a few occasions you mentioned that you didn't fish because the water was polluted. Were you referring to untreated waste from the inhabited part of the island?
Too much plastic and rubbish in the water. After the rains, there'll be plenty of logs from the rivers too. I've lost too many lures when the water is full of objects! 🙄🤷🏼 Liz
@@followtheboat so what are they doing to help prevent global warming.. thats shit is pushed on usa resident very heavly, to the point where we are not buying it any more . toyota, was first to admit electric cars are not the answer..lol just more problems then what they are worth......
The Lesser Sunda Islands...I did a liveaboard scuba safari from Bali to Komodo and Flores about 10 years. The barren topography was like like the moon and I thought I'd fallen through a time warp back to the dinosaur age.
Biggest tip I have for anchoring is have a windlass that works, mine has just broken :( You're anchoring in 20+ metres of water, do you use a three to one scope and how much rode do you have? I've got 60m of chain, that's it.
Oh no... we know that feeling. I once brought a whole new windlass from the UK to Thailand by air. It was so heavy I had to break it down into its constituent parts and put it in two separate suitcases! We have 100m of chain, you need it in these parts (and a good windlass 🤓)! Liz
You know my 60+ years of anchoring I can only think of twice dragging after getting a good set, BUT! am notorious for saying"if" you know that if the "wind doesn't change," "it's a half moon, tide shouldn't change that much" etc. Oh the dreaded bump of the keel in mid sleep...Honestly I've gotten to the point I just acknowledge it and go back to sleep.
I am not diving after anchors especially in streams and lakes in my region. Currents is not the only concern. Entanglements from from fishing line is now a concern I never hear mentioned. A recovery diver told me of tangled line masses with a resemblance of bushes and sadly he told often that is where he has made recovery of the body of a young adult that jumped in from a high spot. These favorite swimming holes are favorite fishing holes . This danger I never see mentioned in or with any swimming guide lines. I know of a deep stream situation now swimming is banned, no reason was given for the number of drownings. Witnesses told seeing the swimmer about to surface then pulled under. It reminds me of fishing line pulled tight but surprisingly in 2023 people talk of a monster instead of seeking reasonable explanation. If filament line is the killer someone involved starting at WCO level and higher would be aware. To make statements to the fact could likely erupt a storm from groups like Sierra Club ,general public and line manufacturers. Some years back cost of average road sign $350.dollars. If its bad as that recovery diver spoke of the public would demand removing it and lawsuit's would be sure to start. But yet as it stands yet this danger is out of Sight and not in the publics mind. I avoid going in deep water and so advise others especially jumpers from cliffs.I apologize for this being so long.
today i gave away my wonderful rv to a lucky person who flew from indiana to tampa international and i saw him drive away a very happy man.. now all i gotta do is get rid of my hummer h2 next year and im sailing away.. just another 12 months to go.. its been a long 4 years talking shit. but im gunna make it happen ... fair winds and fallowing seas.. i hope to share a beer with you all some day.. my sail plan is to leave key west to austrialia and back, then up the old mississippi to the ohio river to the webn fire works in cincinnatti ohio then float with current back home to key west to live out my remaining years..
Great teaching video however the thumbnail is unnecessary clickbait. You don’t need to do that. Using a fake picture of Esper washing ashore feels like deceptive advertising and is beneath the quality of your work.
If the title had been "IF YOU DON'T ANCHOR PROPERLY YOU COULD LOSE YOUR BOAT!!!" I'd agree. But it doesn't. The title is clearly about how to anchor, which is what the video is about. That's not clickbait. I'm glad you found it informative. Liz (designer of our thumbs). ✏️🎨🖌️🖼️
I think the last minute of this video shows exactly why you do this... congratulations, you guys are fab! We really enjoy you sharing your life. 🙏
A pleasure, Stephen. Thanks for watching 😎👍

Thanks for watching! At least if (when?) it happens, you'll have the know-how to deal with it. 👌🙂Liz
So good! Thank you for this.
Tremendously helpful video. Thank you!
We're delighted you thought so, and took the trouble to comment. 🙏
All great advice, as is getting a good anchor app for your phone to alert if you if you start to drift!

Always better to learn from some one else rather than bitter experience.
That's for sure! The key is not to panic and to apply calm logic. 🙏⚓ Liz

If the emergency dive team planted that old mooring to drum up business, it wouldn't surprise me. Lombok looks far from bombok.
No, the 'team' was a bunch of cruisers from the nearby marina! 🤿😀 Liz
