When I was growing up my favorite book was “Folk Songs Of North America” by the Lomaxes. I read it cover to cover several times as a child. Folk music has always been my focus.
It was there that I first learned about Springfield Mountain and went on to write Springfield Mountain Coalminer from that inspiration. There’s also a song called Rider in that book and it always fascinated me.
I first heard this song on Hot Tuna‘s debut album. It was recorded live and it was definitely hot. I learned it and started playing it, although probably rather badly.
The best inspiration I got from the song is from the Grateful Dead. Their version is impeccable and perfect. There’s also a wonderful version recorded by the progressive bluegrass band called the Seldom Scene. It is quite good as well and features an extended jam.
This tune has been a part of my musical life forever and I’m so happy to be able to play it as a solo artist and with my band. She does miss me when I’m gone, by the way.
