Electricity in Vancouver is normally all Hydro. There might be a natural gas peaker plant, but when you charge your car, the electricity is normally generated by a water-driven turbine.
I was in correct, i assumed it was like alberta or manitoba but hey, we are all learning. Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
@@trav4oilers so you live in the city and reported things you didnt even know?? what the hell is wrong with your lazy generation ?
Manitoba Hydro, the company, is 97% hydro as well lol.
As a Vancouverite I agree with pretty much all of this. I will say that as a woman who's not 6'5'', I used to work in the DTES and have never been accosted by the homeless folks there. I've even walked alone in a mini skirt at night and not been so much as cat-called. Ironically I've had way more trouble with regular dudes harassing me or following me from the train. It makes me really sad that we price people out of housing in Vancouver, then criminalize their homelessness. I'm hoping the city takes a turn for compassion, since it's kinder (and cheaper!!) to help people with housing and addiction support than it is to constantly harry them or trash their belongings.
Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
This is by far the most detailed, the most comprehensive and the best video about Vancouver....
hey thank you so much brother! I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
Vancouver is where you wake up every day remembering I Live in Vancouver !❤:-D
AND when you leave you always miss it!
When the 🌞is FULL you drop everything and Run Outside! Preferably any Beach!
Love the visuals and descriptions, Trav. Thanks for the tour!
Thanks for watching, I tried to mix in as many beautiful aerials
Hey Trav. Great video! I really enjoyed hearing about your experience and perspective on living in Vancouver. Pretty solid observations and superb b-roll! As a born and raised Vancouverite, I share your enthusiasm and optimism for this beautiful place. We aren't perfect, but we are darn close to it!
I hope it can come together cause it is so awsome!
Glad to have you out here for a while. Best of luck this season!
Thank you for being the reason I came here and changing my life
@@trav4oilers Hopefully for the better! 🙃
Love this video, answered a lot of my questions !😊
I got other vancouver videos, hope they help :)
As an American living in San Diego, I would rate Vancouver as the best city in North America, hands down! I have visited three times on vacation and if I win the lottery I will move there. Great video Trav, good luck this season!
Def a lot of positives, lot of room for improvement too. thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
That’s funny. If I win a lottery I’d move to the US probably California or Texas. Vancouver is not that great. I regret moving here but now I’m kinda stuck
I’ve lived in Vancouver for my entire 30 year life span. If I won the lottery I’d leave here in a heartbeat. I’d be in Florida.
Watching this in a rainy day with a gray sky in June in Vancouver 😂
One thing to add, Pacific Central Station also grants access to the US through Amtrak Cascades service.
Yes it does, i forgot to mention that. Thank you!
Amazing comprehensive video, thank you!
Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
I moved here from England in April and I think you’ve hit the nail on the head - the lifestyle, accessibility and scenery alone help me justify the cost and have had nothing but great weather so far. I have a 1 bedroom fully furnished with bills apartment for $2800 and the sad thing is I feel lucky to be paying that because it’s so tough to find a place that checks all the boxes. I haven’t experienced winter here yet of course but in no way do I regret this move so far!
Also first time commenting but I’ve watched your videos since the junior B days that I found when killing time working in a pro shop back home - keep the content coming Trav
Are you a hockey player from England?
@@MbisonBalrog yeah dude I played some junior and beer league back in England
Hey mate, thanks for watching and welcome from england over. I couldn't agree more. thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
I live in south van and pay half that. And it’s pretty safe
@@joshdixon4760 How do you like Vancouver winters? How does it compare to England?
Love you finally got to move to Vancouver! always hoped you move here and was super happy when you decided to call it home!
and it was def an incredible stay!
Thank you Trav, for sharing your experience. I moved to Vancouver from Seattle around the same time as you. I feel assured to see you confirm some of my own impressions. A heavenly city, with a heavenly price tag coming with it.
are we on the same pages? Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
I want to live in a city that shuts down because of a cm of snow. It's such a waste of time shovelling snow. It is nature's way of saying "don't live here". As with Vancouver keep the snow on the top of mountains and go and play up there all you want. Just make sure you live in a place that has so many mountain slopes so close you can go to them after work.
Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
It doesn’t actually shut down but the immigrants from hot countries crash their cars and ruin everyone’s commute to work.
Im from Chilliwack BC i live in alberta and miss the mainland so much Vancouver is amazing and i love it
You know how amazing Vancouver really is!
@@trav4oilers yeah I never would talk crap like other people would I was and still am proud to be from BC especially the lower mainland
As soemone who lives in Montreal I will say I find Vancouver very interesting. I couldn't afford to live there but the mountains, the ocean, wow is that ever a nice view. Hope you enjoy your life there buddy, stay safe !
It's def worth checking out man :)
Coming from California with the power of the USD, Vancouver actually is a fairly discounted city (power of exchange rates :D ). Of course Vancouver housing is wildly expensive, but for trips it's incredibly accessible for Americans and I'd wager Europeans (tons of Europeans in Vancouver from my own trips).
BC electricity is NOT from gas. The only gas generators in the province are in remote off-grid villages.
i was incorrect! Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
Vancouver is great city to tour around! I love Stanley park! And Squamish and Whistler is breath taking! North Vancouver got real nice housing that way! Great video! Best of luck this season! 👊🏼
Unaffordable housing but hella nice housing
What A VIDEO ✅ A beautiful place and one that I love to call home,, but nothing is perfect. FACTS
Great visuals and shots my man 🤙
You're my fav vancouver youtuber, let's go!
Great vid bud. Visited Vancouver many times and hoping to move there one day
What a place to be :)
I made it out to Vancouver last fall for my first time and it was breathe taking! definitely just a place for me to visit, but I can see why living there would be great!
Living is def awesome, just expensive as all hell
I visited Vancouver for 1 week and fell in love with the city!!!
It's an incredible spot to stay forsure!
I lived in downtown Vancouver, Yaletown, for seven years, 2005-2012. I worked at Rogers Arena. Vancouver is the most beautiful city in the world. Lots of stuff to do in Vancouver. I love the Grouse Grind and Wreck Beach. I want to move back to Vancouver. I am waiting for the housing market to finally collapse in Vancouver. I miss the food, the beaches, the Whitecaps, the Canucks and the grind. And I love the concerts in Vancouver.
I need to experience the grouse! Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
You got a good year weather-wise, there are some summers where it still rains 10-15 days a month & the winter was real, with more snow than the city typically gets (where it is usually rain).
it absolutely was a great weather year. thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
Hey Trav, want to let you know you’re starting to give me Anthony Bourdain vibes. Your main shtick is hockey and it’s always present in your videos, but you make awesome travel vlogs that are so informative and fun to watch!
Bourdain started just making food videos but slowly transitioned into travel vids with food always being the main driver throughout.
Just something I noticed! Keep it up man.
Yeah I can see that, mybe that's my future of videos ;)
I love Vancouver! Seems like a really cool city! Hope you enjoy living there! I bet the Richmond Olympic Oval is super awesome!
It's a beautiful facility! thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
Great video and point ofview
thanks for watching man :)
You did a great job accurately depicting this city. I have been lucky enough to call this home for almost 40 years now. We do have problems, but all cities do. With the mild climate here, a lot of marganalized people come from across the country to survive in our winters without frostbite or freezing to death living on the streets. That helps give us a higher than average population of impoverished and entrenched people. I would also like to comment on the building as you had mentioned them not being too tall. There is an aspect of not cutting off views , but it is also noteworthy to mention we are on the pacific rim, and lo0ng over due for a major earthquake as we are frequently reminded. That is a more prevalent reason for the lack of towers... which is also changing. A lot fo the newer buildings are coming in around the 50 to 60 floors as the engineering is making safer structures. (Still to be put to the test.)
I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
One reason why Vancouver is expensive is a lot of investors bought real estate. I know of people who bought 3 -6 houses or an entire floor of a new condo complex for investment about 10 years ago. It was expensive then, but now, it is unaffordably expensive. At best, one can hope to buy a crappy 700 sq ft condo that will need fixing after your collective tenants pour congealed fat to clog the main plumbing stacks.
Awesome video. Thanks! Lived here for a summer back in 2007. Visited again for a week in 2014. Still have more to explore. Beautiful city. A nice chill vibe. Very pricey but really - the rest of the country is quickly catching up. I’m in Ontario, not much better here. Also in London ontario - the violence, homeless, drugs, etc - EXTREMELY bad here. Over the past 5 years it’s been steadily getting out of control. Anyways, great points you make about the quality of life in van . great job trav!
Useless sidebar - Stanley park and coal harbour - can’t say enough. By far my fav area.
Just an incredible place, it truly is awesome :)
Big like, thank you. Moving there soon, just finalising the visa. Had some doubts still should I move or just stay in London and you convinced me. 🙏
I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
I've lived in and around Vancouver pretty much my entire life, and honestly I agree with just about everything in this video.
You must be RICH

Excellent video. I happened to be born in Vancouver and I'm also "in constant gratitude and appreciation" for being able to live here.
It's a great mindset to have. I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
@@trav4oilers I'm a great fan of the stories of the grand railway hotels and will look forward to that. I hope to visit all of them at least once and have a few checked off so far, particularly the CP hotels - I'm named after a CP ship!
This is a brilliant video. Informative and very well put together. Personally I really liked vancouver but found it lacked in live music and nightlife, and they're big things for me. But I'm comparing it to cities I've been to like London and NYC, maybe that's unfair
Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
It can also come down to preferences and one's personal situation. You need money to live there. A working person will struggle there. And it used to be a very British place, as the native-settler population for English Canada is English and Scottish. But now it's very Chinese, especially in the younger demographics. So if you're young and want to find a partner who is Chinese, or you love that culture and that scene, then it's for you. Otherwise, you may feel quite isolated and experience cultural clashes. We live among other people, not as individuals, and so it's a very significant aspect of life there.
I agree, vancouver is for the elites
Trav I love your pads hoping I could get some pads for my self and also keep up the awesome work I love watching your videos their the best videos
My purple pads?
Nice video. I remember when River District was nothing and it seemed to have propped up overnight. At the moment many people there seem to own cars, but I wished that they ran more bus schedules for the area! Used to work nearby and the bus was very rare
I don't live there anymore but it's crazy to see old photos of it. I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)

Trav4Tourist future...sums up Van pretty damn well!
I love vancouver and the tourism aspect as well :)
The Couver needs to build an HSR underwater to Naniamo on Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island is big enough to develop and still have plenty of wild wilderness left.
I would love to see that, would be an incredibly long project away but def great idea. thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
I am one of the few people born in and around Vancouver who loves snow, even when it falls in the city. It’s so pretty. And unlike a lot of people here, I have snow tires. I also know how to drive in it. My dad is from the Maritimes, he insisted on both.
Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
Yeah same here. Born and raised in Vancouver and I love when it snows, shoveling it doesn’t bother me, I love driving in it, all of it. Contemplating moving to Calgary as I’m sick of this damn city. Pay so much money for what? Beautiful scenery? Yeah f that.
Great video , love the way you tell a story. Keep up the good work. PS Surrey is not that bad and its more affordable than Vancouver but still close enough to enjoy its fruit.
Story is key! Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
Unreal video bro
hey thanks for the comment bro :)
I guess I'm weird. I like snow scenery over beaches lol. I'd visit there in a heart beat. I wanted to go whale watching as a bucket list thing. A lot of Hollywood movies are filmed in Vancouver even though you think you're watching New York. Lots of movie effects studios are based in Vancouver. I'm from Indiana but have always wanted to go to British Columbia mire than anywhere. I showed my 20 yearold nephew your train videos. He wants to go with me on a trip like those. Keep up the great work on these videos.😮
I couldn't agree more, something so cool about seeing the city covered in snow! thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
lived here all my life and still do. amazing city
You rich?
i've lived in vancouver since 1990, i think you've summarized the city pretty well. there's pros and cons to every place. p.s. when will you be signing with the canucks? 😉
Probably never but you never know ;)
Moved from Winnipeg to White Rock 2012-ish. Crescent Beach is really nice! You should come check it out sometime!
11:00 our power comes from hydro not gas. Natural gas might be used in some cases just to make up small surges as it’s ash to ramp up.
I was incorrrect! Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
Simplest is what you have said, "Try living somewhere else". Then you realize how amazing this city is. And learning how to live without a car is a key for me, but I live close to frequent transit. A very nice summary of the city. Luckily I have lived here mosy of my life. Montreal and area is so flat. Lived there for six years. Always glad to return to Vancouver, my favourite city.
It really has some good perspective with that mindset. I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
@@trav4oilers @trav4oilers Have you done the walk that starts behind Park Royal Mall. going West? The path goes through a tunnel of trees and opens to Lions Gate bridge view. The path forks , going right is for cyclists and left for pedestrians to the open ocean view. Walk past the area open for dogs and come to the main parking area for cars looking to enjoy the view. The path goes all the way to Dundarave. It is my favourite walking path in the whole city, and beats the nice UBC, 10th, 8th ave walk towards the city, and down towards Kitsilano,,staying close to the ocean view side (Point Grey Rd to Cornwall).

I'm curious as a working class gentleman, in these crazy times of insane rentals, is Vancouver a good idea for a single person looking to live alone? I'm hoping to get some personal perspectives on how "tight" living situations are with medial income and high rent? Do Vancouverites feel that pressure has caused them to think about other places in BC?
If you got money yes, if not then no. It's expensive
DTES danger is (somewhat) overrated. I'm a 5'8 disabled guy with zero fighting ability who's walked in the DTES very late at night, alone. If you don't bug them, they typically won't bug you. Obviously, it's recommended to keep your head on a swivel, don't listen to music, yadda yadda. And obviously, I'm still a guy - I assume my experience would be different if I was a woman or in an even worse mobility situation. Still, I think the whole violent crime BS is just the news media having a shitty day and reporting stuff that would've been ignored pre-2020.
I have been there at night many times. There is a concert venue right there on Hastings and Main. Not really dangerous from what I’ve seen.
Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
Hello champ, from the uk, simple question really which would you recommend for citybreak Vancouver or Toronto ? Cheers

In few words: If you are ok living in a 500 sq/ft shoe box and ready to give up the freedom of owning your own transportation, Vancouver is the city for you. If you are Canadian and your choice is either Vancouver or shoveling snow in winter in the rest of the country and you do not mind a very lousy job market, the city may look like paradise on earth. About the author describing Vancouver as "the best city in Northamerica" evidently he did not travel that much in the continent outside of Canada (the fact he considers Vancouver beaches "great" is a strong hint). Vancouver is definitely a nice city and the best that Canada can offer but I would use the superlatives more sparingly...if you can legally live in the US there are overall much better choices.

Vancouver is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world and I’m happy that you found your happy place. I always enjoy myself when I visit but my friends who live there are often comment that the city is very unfriendly. Obviously, they have a terrible homeless problem which seems to be more and more common in all big cities in North America these days.
So beautiful. I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)

I was planning on doing a Seattle/Vancouver trip in late September. Would you recommend I still do it? I’ve just been seeing a lot of videos on homelessness and drug problems in the city which is got me worried about enjoying the trip
Honestly the homeless/drug problem shouldn’t be what makes you stay away from Vancouver. As long as you avoid East Hastings street you’ll be quite fine. It’s a beautiful city/province with lots going on.
@@aidanjohnston2488 sweet ok that’s good to know. Do you know if it’s difficult to cross the border between Seattle and Vancouver? I have to fly into Seattle then I was going to cross the border and spend a couple nights in Vancouver and Victoria
@@tristanc5937 I’m Canadian so I’ve never been stopped/put into secondary coming from the Washington border going back into BC. Don’t be a dick and just be honest I guess?
Both of those are brutal here but hope it changes
@@tristanc5937 I live in Seattle and yes the homelessness is pretty substantial in both cities with Seattle probably being worse. As for crossing the border, going into Canada is a breeze, their border crossing is nice and considerably quicker than going back to the United States.

Good video. Can't say I share your enthusiasm for Vancouver though, it's just way too expensive and full of social problems. I lived there for about 9 years well before it got into the deep affordability crisis it now enjoys - I liked it for a while...

Well Done! Welcome to the Lower Mainland. Just so everyone knows, all electricity in B.C. is generated by Hydroelectric power. So, no greenhouse gas emissions.
People are stupid , I am living in Alberta . Albertan always go to Vancouver and BC to enjoy sunshine , pick fruits and winery in summer time . We know vancouver is mild weather in Vancouver, only raining but better than snow storm all the time .
The summer fruit is legit too!
I drive a tesla in vancouver, unfortunately with our outrageous insurance prices we just about break even on the electricity savings :)
So it's all a wash, how long you had the tesla?
@@trav4oilers just over a year, but if you drive more you’ll save some money. If you drive about 20k a year you’ll break even because the actual collision insurance is about 2000 more than a regular vehicle
Of all the Vancouver vlogs, this one is at least somewhat honest. Kudos for mentioning the DTES and the rising crime. It's just as much a part of the city as its natural beauty. I lived in Vancity for 13 years. It's the Rolls Royce of cities. Is it nice? Of course it is. BUT it better be when you're forced to pay the asking price. For the average working class citizen, it's a raw deal no matter how you spin it.
I tried my best to be honest. It's true. I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
@@trav4oilers That would be an amazing trip. Pricey but once in a lifetime thing. Safe travels.
One major reason why you don’t see homeless etc in west van and north van compared to other parts is that there aren’t any services there. Downtown east side believe it or not has one of the highest concentrations of government services, NGOs and charities for these people hence they’re all around there. It’s why everyone gets pissed off when there’s potential news of a service or low income housing proposal in certain neighbourhoods. It’s unfortunate that we are taking in tourist visa refugees by the plane load and not fixing Canada for Canadians
So move the services out and problem solved. I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
Greatest city in the world baby 💪💪
Stunning place to live! thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
Did you say electricity for charging Teslas is made from gas? Not sure that is correct in Vancouver.
In manitoba haha i was incorrect
I did the opposite and grew up in BC and lived in "VANCOUVER" till 2010 and moved to WINNIPEG
as a "blue collar" worker I was never going to OWN much beyond a studio apartment out in surrey or similar and Winnipeg allowed me to "choose where" I lived NOT where I could "afford" to
went home this last sept and have to say a LOT changed for the WORSE
when I left there was housing that was "affordable" if you are NOT choosy and are willing to live in a VERY SMALL place far from anything and that is NOT available anymore
the visible suffering is astounding - it is HORRIFIC to say the least but like every other place I have lived OR visited it is MOSTLY in pockets of extremes and a LOT is "safe" during safe times
if I had a "wayback" machine I think about NOT moving and sticking it out but without one I hope to retire there MAYBE
Are you still in Winnipeg now? Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
great video - made me appreciate Vancouver more Moved here in 2007 from US never ever looked back. Here is how I see it differently: food is AMAZING and so reasonable to literally eat out every day, THERE IS NO CRIME !!! Have no idea what you are talking about as far as some "scary violent crime" it is the safest place in maybe the entire world - Of course I came from gun happy murder and weapon capital Virginia where school shootings are a normal part of life. Vancouver has been the absolutely best place to raise kids and I am so grateful to live here. PS it is really complicated and hard to immigrate here so very very happy to be past all that hard work and just enjoy now being a citizen. Street addicts are not dangerous here like in the US there are no weapons on the street. This is all from a privileged white lady - if I was Indigenous the story would be very different. But that would take another big comment
Random stabbings weekly downtown Vancouver, where have you been? Shootings in Surrey all the time to the point they rarely even make the news anymore. I’ve been here for 30 years and looking to either move to Calgary or the US ideally, could I take your citizenship over in the states? 😂😂
@@KeatonDee WOW sure.I don't think you have an idea of what it is like to live in many parts of he US where 70 - 80 % of your neighbours have multiple guns, 150 gun related crimes in a two week period in close vicinity to your home in a small city (Virginia) and, as in my case, a neighbourhood school shooting happens the year your kid is ready for kindergarten. etc. Open carry. anyone
? A bit different than knifing and targeted drug gang crimes
gonna have to do an updated version of this! thanks for watching
Nice vlog… fair content. New subs here.

Well I'm actually a weirdo from Toronto some of my family have lived in Vancouver before for a couple years my brother lived there for 6 years
Heyyyyyy Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
I think Surrey really gets a bad rep… like Vancouver, Surrey has some bad areas but also quite a few nice areas
I def would not venture into there
As an Aussie (but have goals of living in Europe) its a bit weird I've never heard someone call Canada part of North America but geographically its right...Ive just never thought of it that way
I didnt know that there was regulations around how tall buildings could be but it is beautiful that there is...
Thank you your videos are really informative and your sponsor made me giggle 🤣
hhah as long as you picked up some sheath underwear, that's what matters ;)
FYI, all/most our electricity is generated by hydro power. We have one of the cheapest electricity around.
Good to know!
Aren’t you signed to Watertown? Why are you wearing another team´s tuque? BTW, I agree VVR is the most beautiful city in North America.
Yes I am! a lot of these clips are old ones
I'm from Toronto still consider move to Metro Vancouver
Highly recommend moving here over toronto :)
I didn’t realize that if you move somewhere in January that by August you have lived there for a year
I figured with all the months travelling and living here, plus moving here full time, just round up to the 1 year mark, whoops
@@trav4oilers hey man, carry the one, round up, give or take plus with the time zone change she's been a year. Rooting for you this upcoming season brother
As an Australian hearing you call Vancouver “warm” Is insane
Different standards :) I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
After Trav retires .... he will go from trav4hockey to trav4travel
I think so as well :)
As an es East Van Boy in the 90's i love van. One thing is Vans food is cheap... East Vaners pride ourselves in ethnic hoods that have to compete... so low low genuine viet, chinese, asian, italian, greek, spanish etc eats. Oh..and the music scene is historical. EVLocols.
I could not agree more, thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
