Tried the one for the D750 and it sucks. lots of blurriness outside the center. If you only compose with your focal point in the center, go for it. If you do lots of off-center focusing, it sucks.
Ken man,,,, that makes me smile to read that,,, about a magnifier... since my almost 60 y.o. eyeballs arent what they used to be... and I so want to get better at M.F. lenses when that time grrrrrrrr comes when I start buying them :) thank you for the valuable info :)
I'm looking into something similar for my Canon APS-C body, so I'd like to ask if you have any experience with this sort of magnifier on a crop-sensor body viewfinder? I have an manual 35mm film camera that I love for its large picture in the viewfinder, and I was hoping a magnifier may help match that feel. However, I'm also concerned it will cut out the exposure information.... So what do you say? Yay or nay for a APS-C user?
+Michael Eitland Yea I like it and do ok with it on D7100, but between f/1.4 - 2.8 can be a struggle. I think I have it but its off. Is it my eyes, is it the focusing screen, will this even help? I think I will try before I buy if I can.
Would you say it's possible to accurately focus fast lenses like 1.2, and such? I mean, the fastest lens I own is my beautiful little 50mm 1.4 Ai(which I mostly shoot at 2.8), but I'd just like to know its effectiveness versus something like a replacement split image focusing screen. I was hesitant to buy one because of the exposure problems, even if they can be solved with compensation. I also want to get more use out of my Petzval 85mm, which is an absolute bitch to nail focus when doing street photography
+DumbHispanic yes you can, but also normal MF, also be more inaccurate more often. 1.2 is just too shallow, 1/2 of shots often miss the mark street razor thin DOF is self-torture :/ dont do that :P
Yeah, man, it really is difficult. I just don't get the same feeling when I use AF, and it makes me feel distant from the process of capturing an image. My eyes aren't too good, but luckily the D700 has a diopter adjustment option. Other than that, it's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to hit focus with my 50mm at 1.4, my Petzval at 2.2-2.8, and my Nikkor 135 (which I'm considering selling at this point) without using the built in rangefinder. Even then, it's not always correct. I'm hoping this magnifier will do the trick. Are you able to focus accurately with your petzval at 2.2 with the dk-17? How about your zeiss 85mm 1.4?
That will come in handy for my new Zeiss MF lens, although I seemed to be doing just fine yesterday without one. At $38 it should be glass and coated, etc. Looks like I may have to start selling off some of my other non-photog toys. (lol)
+Theoria Apophasis - I picked one up for my D810 this weekend using my Amazon points. It is awesome. I didn't think it would make too much difference but it does. I should have purchased these for my cameras years ago especially since I do quite a bit of manual focusing. My D300 is next in line for the upgrade.
+Theoria Apophasis btw, im shooting with D700 but the LCD resolution of D700 is low so i cant evaluate my image through it. Is it possible to preview the image from D700 through smart phone or tablet ? Thanks
any alternatives in 2023? The Nikon ones are impossible to track down now.
Got mine combination of DK17M + DK19 awesome! really helpful to MF easily on D700 :-)

+stinger1956 it also crops out some of the viewfinder, , but any magnifier does that, you have to look around rather than straight IN

I was using a D300 and the focus "o" was almost useless on Ais lenses. The D7100 has ">o

Thank you, Ken. Just recently purchased a D850. Super happy with the new camera but this Nikon DK-17M is definitely a plus!!6
150$ ebay
I use the DK-19 Rubber Eyecup on my D800. Is it compatible with the DK-17M? Thanks Ken. Your videos ROCK!!!
+Ronnie Harris the 17m is ROUND for the pro end models
the other is square for D7000 series and D750 :)
How about D600/D610? will Dk22 + dk17m do the job?
Was thinking about DK-17M + DK-22 + DK-19 for a D7100. Would that help very much with MF? Or better to go with focusing screen, or both?
+nemac23 both is best of course, but just the magnifier is enough for MOST peeps
does the dk-21 work on the d5200? and how bad is the viewfinder crop?
DK17M + DK19 on bot my D800 and D4 = awesomeness!
