  • Francesca Vidotto is a physicist and philosopher who is driven by two fundamental questions:
    “What is being?” and “What is becoming?”.
    These questions fuel her pioneering work in quantum gravity and cosmology, as well as her philosophical studies into epistemologies of science.
    She tackles the problem of understanding the quantum properties of space and time from an interdisciplinary lens that involves mathematical, experimental, and philosophical tools.
    In this conversation with Lauren and Colin, she explains the connective tissue between physics, philosophy, feminism, and the human quest for truth and meaning.
    Conversations at the Perimeter is co-hosted by Perimeter Teaching Faculty member Lauren Hayward and journalist-turned-science communicator Colin Hunter. In each episode, they chat with a guest scientist about their research, the challenges they encounter, and the drive that keeps them searching for answers.
    The podcast is produced by the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, a not-for-profit, charitable organization supported by a unique public-private model, including the Governments of Ontario and Canada. Perimeter Institute acknowledges that it is situated on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Neutral peoples. This is a valuable and timely discussion. In the 90s and well into the early 2010s, there was this worrisome trend to excuse philosophy as folk science. Francesca reminds us of the important as well as playful roles philosophy has within our curious lives. A huge thank you to Francesca Vidotto for sharing your thoughts, research, and time with us and a thank you to PI for sharing this talk. 🌺

    The spontaneous absorption and emission of light photon ∆E=hf energy is continuously exchanging potential energy, of being, into the kinetic energy of electrons. Kinetic Eₖ=½mv² energy is the energy of motion of what is actually happening, what is becoming, as an uncertain ∆×∆pᵪ≥h/4π probabilistic future continuously comes into existence with each photon electron interaction or coupling.

    About time, about change, this pressing matters are telling something deep about our nature, about ourselves. The laws of nature (know how) seem to be an abstract concept till you stare at Life 😮

    Being and becoming depends on the limits society allows me to believe. My imagination is more important than the knowledge that exists. How long does it take for a theory to be a fact

    Great interview.
    Yes, it’s critical for the foundation of philosophy and by extension, sociology, politics and law to meet the fundamental laws of nature as they stand today.
    The business model, one based on the individuated/separated notion of money, which is in conflict with the observer being the observed, is part of this separation. Blockchain can solve for interconnection, interdependence and yet make for freedom of expression.
    Eventually, it can be modeled say, on string theory, when ran through quantum computers.
    The bringing together of the soft sciences and the fundamental laws of nature touch directly on sexual identity, gender roles and the role of sex in relationships.
    Such a challenge, ones of what the fundamental laws of nature say about observation, experience, knowledge and time can breathe an air of general relation to these often difficult dialogues.
    In sum, the practical philosophy touched on here, born out of the 2 dimensional field of thought, can find action out from it, into the 3d world of observation.
    Simultaneously resolving for its conflict (the past, or that the observer is not the observed) and evolving towards new dimensions of expression, creativity and notions of ‘experience’.

      Remember.
      Some argue that the concept of "unnaturalness" is human-centric and may not necessarily imply ethical implications. I contend that many human activities, such as medicine, technology, and even aspects of human behavior, could be considered "unnatural" but are not inherently unethical. -/ai

    • @Inquiring_Together

      @@AkkarisFox good point. Thought is quite sophisticated. It is intent on self-perpetuation and self-protection through its perpetuation. Diving time and space as fixed is the most general way it does as such. It was cool that the speaker mentioned this a bit. To be able to reach the most fundamental laws of nature, one must be keenly aware of thoughts conditioning through limited knowledge and experience. Extending to ethical/unethical.
      An area which will force this inquiry about the nature of thought will be AI. Perhaps, a certain shock in an ontological sense, between natural vs unnatural can call upon soft scientists in acceptance of the fundamental laws of nature to inquire and move forward, together?

    • @Inquiring_Together
      @Inquiring_Together 2 місяці тому

      @@SRCX.ClimateResearch lol, thats the difficulty with bringing together soft sciences and hard contemporary physics. Making sense is between 0’s and 1’s. Logical reasoning, we find is perhaps, surface level. Underlying is all things nonsensical and sensical at the same time.

    • @Inquiring_Together
      @Inquiring_Together 2 місяці тому

      @@SRCX.ClimateResearch yes, the controller is the controlled. Thought through its limited scope has reached its horizon. The speaker touched on this a bit. Taking action, outside of thoughts purview can be daunting, but it may lend towards unification, inwardly and outwardly, perhaps as nature intended.

    • @Inquiring_Together
      @Inquiring_Together 2 місяці тому

      @@SRCX.ClimateResearch thats the tricky thing about subjective and objective. Thought seeks to separate between the the two. It also seeks truth in knowledge, conditioning the lens of which further separates between observer and observed.
      No scientific background. I attended Strings 2023, I watch Perimeter Institute videos and I have a few favorite physicists. Also, the martial art Jeet Kune Do is great for these sorts of observations. 😋☯️. Also, I’m a lawyer. 😔.

    "Francesca Vidotto on questions of being and becoming" - living the close down of the finite fossil fuels age.
    Finite fossil fuels are dangerously hypnotic to humans, their consciousness, reasoning and mental capacity.
    Humans were not ready morally, ethically and intellectually to start mass extraction of fossil fuels with the advent of the steam engine 300 years ago.
    E=mc² - "A derived Value must not violate the Concept of its Value".
    "In any system of energy, Control is what consumes energy the most.
    No energy store holds enough energy to extract an amount of energy equal to the total energy it stores.
    Energy, like time, flows from past to future"(2017).
