A Rabid Fox in her last hour

  • UPDATE for 5-27-2020. Good news. A young male has been spotted dancing around on the property in the morning and dusk hours ( has had a barking match with my cat also) ... too swift to capture him on video. It's possibly a kit of this female as she had been lactating (possibly weren't infected?). As far as speculation please keep in mind i am only the videographer and this was so titled for the authority involved who happens to have decades of experience. Leave me out of it. My only intent was to capture a rare close proximity encounter of a wild animal on video. I did not enjoy seeing it get shot, and I am NOT THE SHOOTER.
    Stages of disease
The first stage is a one- to three-day period characterized by behavioral changes and is known as the prodromal stage.
The second stage is the excitative stage, which lasts three to four days.
The THIRD STAGE is the paralytic or dumb stage and is caused by damage to motor neurons.
Update 7-12-18 **Attention ladies and gentleman** of the new internet... if you read the description you can appropriately dive to the depths of "common sense cyberspace protocol" to a point without fully having to ascertain that this was filmed (while waiting) before the proper "killing authorities" had arrived. Stop. **** thank you.
This poor mother. I left the video mostly raw with some maximum stabilizing so you could see the symptoms that they exhibit. I could have chosen a few minutes, but I wanted to express how harrowing this disease is. If you have it in your heart, try to get through all 17 minutes. Often times when you see me get up or move the camera, it's out of fear because she was coming right up to me. Pay no attention to the people in the background... Do not approach, pet, or come into contact with their saliva. I know this seems obvious as adorable and rare as close contact is with them, (everyone seems to try to approach or actually "pet" them) but do not. I've had contact with raccoons and close feedings with skunks, but these were healthy nocturnal juveniles.. hungry as ever.
A wildlife expert was dispatched and on the spot said she was rabid. The fox (unfortunately) was destroyed on the spot via pellet gun. I can't say i agree with this method of putting an animal down, but more importantly it was bagged and thrown away by the police rather than positively having it tested for rabies by a biologist. Living or dead.
The health department will only issue mailers if someone is bitten (a likely fatal wound if not treated within 24-36 hours). This is the dumb active world we live in. They do not understand mammalian diseases or the potential hidden outbreak. For them it's not worth the cost of paper to be proactive about a disease that kills. It is not worth it for the police to allow the scientific community to collect specimens for review. As sad as it was to watch her struggle as well as getting her eye shot out, the real tragedy is the lack of human involvement in education, prevention and control.
The first thing it attacks is muscle control, particularly in the hips and legs. Respiratory then becomes difficult..

@@ultragalacticgamer7195 Actually, nocturnal doesn't mean they're only active at night and hide away in the dark all day, it just means they're MOST active at night. Animals like raccoons, foxes, skunks, opossums, etc. are often still active during the day, we just don't see them much because they stay in places without a lot of human activity. Sometimes you might see a skunk or an opossum taking a stroll in the daylight -- this means it was mostly likely disturbed from its previous area and is moving to another, or it may be looking for food or water. A nocturnal animal being active during the day isn't a major concern, but rather the behavior of the animal itself is. Paralysis, wobbling, seizures, difficulty breathing, excess drooling, self-mutilation, unusual aggression (coming after someone instead of fleeing, or attacking instead of hissing/playing dead in the case of opossums.)

The symptoms are definitely obvious, and this looks to be near late stage. As for putting her down, a gun is as humane as any. There is no cure at all for the disease at this point, and leaving them alone to die a slow horrid death is both cruel and dangerous; as other creatures can also be infected. At this point, they are practically dead but don't know it.
Testing wouldn't be needed as the stage of the disease is too far, and if we were grasping at straws to name the symptoms as not rabies it would still be severe neurological damage and organ failure, which would still come to the same conclusion of putting her down.

Firstly, I want to say thank you for posting this, because not only must it have been heartbreaking but also scary. Still, we need videos like this for research and the public because not enough is being taught about how this virus presents in wild animals. It’s not always the snarling, foaming at the mouth kind of behavior. In our area people have been chased at and bitten by rabid red foxes who are openly aggressive, but just the other day we had a sick raccoon in our neighborhood that was not aggressive but was slowly wobbling around and kept rubbing its face with its hands. It could have had distemper, but at least animal control came to get it before it got any worse. Thank you. They have similar behavior (friendly) after labor (so I've heard), but an expert said she was rabid. There was a massive rain storm that may have flooded the den, but the cubs would have also been rabid. It's taken me a while to get over that whole day. Mostly watching a cop shoot it. I assumed... live capture. blood test. euthanasia. active rabies culture for biologists... confirming it was rabid so people are aware and we have facts. They won't even go so far as sending out mailers unless someone is bit... a fatal wound (through bloodstream and brain stem) without immediate 36-48 hour attention. He put her in a grocery bag and told his intention of throwing it in the dumpster behind the police station. They see much wildlife out here, but enough to know that skunks and raccoons may find the carcass in the dumpster. The disease is active in blood/saliva for several hours of being spilled... I'm not sure how long it would incubate in a body... possibly longer? Very dangerous I imagine. At the same time, the officer turned a potential tragedy into quick work. I am not saying his job is easy or that they are incompetent or that he enjoys shooting cute animals. Only my request for different protocol. I will say that the close contact with this rare beauty was great during filming. In moments like this you only feel for the vulpes vulpes and not yourself.

Currently in my second semester in vet med. Rabies cases are supposed to be legally reported whether wild animal, pet, or humans. The only time it’s not reported is if the animal is already dead like road kill, which is a problem in itself. The other issue is the fox was thrown in the garbage. If a scavenger mammal like raccoon were to feed on her it too would get rabies. Such irresponsible actions done by the wildlife officers in this video. This is exactly how diseases spread.

Looking back I should’ve been more careful because he could’ve had rabies, but he never showed any aggression even after a while of being within a few inches of me. Just sat there and looked at the neighborhood kids playing with me. He only left after I got up so my mother wouldn’t freak out seeing him next to me.

I know this is super late, but foxes can become habituated to humans and befriend them. I had one that my husband named Toby, he was a red fox. He would sit next to us at our feet, come in our house, and he even brought his kits and fox wife to meet us (his fox wife was too skittish to come close, but his kits would play in our yard). As long as you didn’t try to touch him, he was comfortable being close to humans (though, as in your case, it’s not unusual for a habituated fox to be okay with an occasional petting). He hung around for many years. The last time we ever saw him, it was clear that he was injured, since he had a major limp and wasn’t getting around very fast, and I imagine he probably became food for something else.
I miss him. He was a good boy.

Even if this is so heartbreaking… you can’t help but feel a sense of calm… the green grass, the birds chirping… and I’ve never seen an animal so calm with rabies… she is clearly a mother, a new mother or a mother yet to come. She feels awful, but the way she looked when she came closer… it was like a child asking for a hug. Her eyes were filled with pain, a longing for comfort… she WASNT seizing, WASNT growling or crying out…
It was like she accepted her fate…
And she was completely cool with it…
And with the whole scenery… I wonder if that helped her go in peace… knowing the last thing she would see, was a gorgeous meadow.

Within 8-12 hours of ingestion of infected flesh, it's possible to show metastatic symptoms manifested via the central nervous system. Animals suffer a severe "cranial itch"...if you will...until their central nervous system and endodermous glands are ravaged by this deadly disease. I did an interview with Fox5 Atlanta approximately 3 months ago if you're interested in learning more. a reply to those who think this fox has distemper or other illness and not rabies. [including the questionable vet/ vet tech claim comments] the point is moot on what should have been done with ill fox. [and dude with camera when fox walked at you the 1st time, you was taking big risk to stay filming. watch the video below of placid coyote behavior change fast to attack mode] ..... and to those who think rabies in its final stage is how a rabid animal behaves in the weeks leading up, your incorrect. some rabid animals can be carriers for a longer time then you tell by behavior or looking sick.
animal control [if area has that department] is a division of the police department [city or county]. who's 1st responsibility is to peoples safety and their choice to catch or kill the sick animal as they deem necessary. there might not be space available to contain wild animal or even stray pet for observation. true the dead animal should be sent to be tested for verification. but they are not going to leave the animal out there alive sick.
instead of debating rabies or not. debating what should have been done. Wild animals with CD appear to act tame or confused and are often found out in the open during the day. They appear disoriented and wander aimlessly. Their sense of fear of humans is lost. It is usually not until this later stage of the disease that wildlife rehabilitators see the infected animals. Unfortunately, these animals suffer neurological complications and will die. the efforts to try and treat at this point has questionable success for a pet, the cost for trying to save the wild animal is not available. mercy death is the kinder option, then letting it suffer longer.
how about do what needs to get done >
start a program in your area's city council [town/ city/ county/ state] to do as European countries have been doing to eradicate rabies [and CD] in the wild. seeding areas with food having vaccine in it.[ how much is life worth and everyone's safety? don't let the cost be the issue] the Carolina's, Tennessee, Midwest like Minnesota, all the way to the east coast is having a big raise in rabies in the wild again. it would be nice if the united states has zero rabies like England.
also make sure your pets gets rabies shots every 3 years, yes some places laws still want a 1-2 year rabies shot record, the rabies vaccine that says 3 years on the vial is the same vaccine as the 5 year. but the law in your area is what needs to be followed. discuss it with you veterinarian and keep your pets and you safe.
watch this video and if you can not notice the coyote has rabies in the 1st 16 seconds of video. while the man in car is saying the coyote isn't doing anything wrong. there was already more than 3 behaviors that showed rabies. Recorded February 3, 2018 Huntersville, NC
    ua-cam.com/video/N_STtp3q7t8/v-deo.html
watch this historical video of public notice, it still holds true in present day of what to do and not do. ua-cam.com/video/T8mBXtYFO9Y/v-deo.html ps it would be nice if this was pinned at top.

      magik knights
The area of Texas where I live do the fly over vaccination pods
for the coyotes, hogs, deer, raccoons etc.
With the drought being so high the last couple of years, wildlife especially coyotes, move into the residential areas looking for water, which is also a way of spreading rabies to pets through saliva in their water sources.
People need to know the signs and not assume that an animal is injured and never to approach them. Call animal control or wildlife experts or even police departments who can contact the proper experts to respond. Monitor the animal from inside a vehicle or home. Better to be safe and not risk your health. This is the best thing you can do for the animal.

Animal control has nothing to do with the police where I'm from. Nor do they car much for public safety (the cops or animal control).
Also, England is an island.. Much easier to control rabies there than in the US.
And more areas of the US have treatment tainted food drops, if rabies is present in the area.
Also. There have only been 23 reported casesof rabies in the whole US in the last decade.. Its so rare that only a few deaths have been reported in the same time frame.
Also, world wide there are only 69,000 deaths from rabies annually... So rabies kills fewer people than the flu, by a factor of almost 5 times...
And thats why people aren't wasting money on controlling rabies, any more than they already do.

The third stage is the paralytic or dumb stage and is caused by damage to motor neurons. Incoordination is seen due to rear limb paralysis and drooling and difficulty swallowing is caused by paralysis of facial and throat muscles. This disables the host's ability to swallow, which causes saliva to pour from the mouth."

Once the animal is taken away it is usually incinerated so there is no chance of contracting the disease in way. They are beautiful animals. Very sad to see them like this. The only one in the wild I ever saw was many years ago when I was fishing in a private pond on a farmer's property early in the morning. The fog was still rising off the top of the pond's water and the edge line of the woods was just starting to become visible through the fog. It was a small red fox that came out for a drink at the pond. I watched it for a few minutes then it heard me and ran away. Very cool to see them in the wild when they're healthy.

Jane Doe: This one in the film here is so beautiful too. Very sad to see her suffer like this. My wife would hate it but I would shoot her and put her down so she didn't have ti suffer any longer. I'm a very kind and friendly person but yes I still like to hunt when I'm healthy enough to do so. But I don't take no crap from anybody and most people around here know me for that. It's kind of funny actually. My wife and I just did a DNA test together and I got my results back. It turns out I'm like 29% Scandinavian...which is VIKING..and even a bit of Norse and Finnish and Russian but don't tell anyone cuz they might try to say I've been colluding with them or something. LOL. SO at least I know now why I don;t no crap...I'm mostly Viking!! LOL. Figures I'd get a curse like that. LOL. The other results are really interesting too. I've even got a small percentage of Middle Eastern in me. Weird cuz I'm whiter than a sheet! LOL. Well, I gotta hit the hay now so you take care and have a safe weekend.

Some friends of mine had a rabid fox go after them. Ran right into their house, attacked their dogs, attacked them, it was running and biting anything it could sink its teeth into. This fox was obviously sick, and I don't know how close the camera person was to that fox, but if the fox was truly rabid it would have been attempting to bite and not just lying down and panting....

The only good thing about living in the city is that you really don't see this, I've lived on up in the woods almost my entire life and have seen so many times its heartbreaking.
It doesn't matter how many times you see this it's always just as sad. Many people I know including me have helped them pass and yeah that never is easy, it's hard taking any life.
nevemind the ones you know can't be saved, especially when you devote your entire life to saving them.

This can happen anywhere. If the UK still has massive rabies issues, then the foxes all over there would be a problem. They have more foxes in-city than out, if I recall. It's likely why they were one of the first to adopt a bait vaccination program back in like, the 60s.
You see rabid raccoons and foxes in suburbia and cities enough that's it's a concern in the US, though.

At advanced stages with rabies, convulsions are spontaneous and inconsistent - the fox here expresses some understanding of its surroundings. With an hour left, this fox would be wandering around aimlessly and constantly while collapsing frequently - its reactions would even be sharp due to twitching.
So no, this is NOT rabies. This is either canine distemper or she's in shock due to have severe trauma (be it birth or injury to the pelvis).
