Hey everyone! Are you curious about Sigma's new 'I' series 35mm f/2 lens, too? Well you needn't be for long. My review of *that* lens is coming tomorrow :-)
Was wondering if you were planning on upgrading your Sony? The a7rii is great but I'd imagine it's feeling a bit old compared to your r5 and z7? Thanks!
If it comes in silver to complement A7C that'd be great! I think the 24mm f/3.5 also looks very attractive. It has the opportunity to be the cheapest autofocus FX 24mm this decade
One day Christopher will let us into the secret of how he gets big lens manufacturers to send him quality products to review all the time. One would guess his friendly demeanour, lovely pictures and honesty.
This Sigma's getting close to the Voigtländer 65mm f2 Apo macro lens in terms of resolution, although not quite as well corrected for chromatic aberrations (or colour rendering, possibly). Autofocus is a welcome addition though. For a very slightly wider but equally sharp alternative, consider the venerable Sony 55mm F1.8, which is costs about the same too.
Do you have a preference between the Sony 55mm and this Sigma? I own a 35mm and the 55mm Zeiss but I'm considering selling my Zeiss for this. I thought it might pair better.
i think Sigma has struck gold with this new direction on their line up! Usually camera companies segment their lenses in such a way, that prohibits the manufacture of quality and relatively well priced SMALL lenses . Thank you for the video, I can't wait for a canon rf version
This lens is borderline groundbreaking for full frame sensors, being the first 65mm outside of macro lenses to my (admittedly limited) knowledge. It's a very interesting field of view, and if I understood right, Joel Sternfeld used something similar on his large format cameras. I'm glad to see the performance keeps up with the concept. The distortion is a tad annoying, but at least it's not as distracting as on the 85mm DG DN. Thank you for the review!
Thank you Christopher. Your reviews are always thorough and great. I have the 35art, 50art, 105art and Sony 85 1.8, and I use all for events, weddings, commercial, family portraits etc. The 85 is old now and has proven it can miss focus in lowlight or miss eyes in portraits in decent light. I will upgrade to either sigma 85 dgdn or because I have the 105, I might replace my 50 and 85 with the 65mm. So for me at least this is very relevant. How does the 65 compare to the 85dgdn for contrast, flare control and backlit AF. Which one felt good to use, for fun or for work? I suspect I will love the 65mm but the 85 focal length still might be needed for my work, as well as f1.4 aperture. AF reliability is so important to me which is why my 105 is awesome and why I will one day replace the old 35art with 35GM for best AF at close up and at distance. The 50art has let me down as many times as the sony 85, so both will go one day, even though both are sharp they do miss AF in some shots, even on my A7iii and A9. Does the 65 or 85dgdn have reliable AF? Share your wisdom please.
Excellent review.👍 The distortion is by design to get the lens small. Sigma did the same with the 85mm DN, and they do it as the camera can correct for it in body. So to make excellent small sized lenses like this they chose this road. I also liked that the bokeh doesn't look busy or distracting in your photos. Can't wait to pair the three new lenses with my Sigma fp camera 😊
This focal length isn't bad. I'm used to it actually because of my APS-C camera which I used a 43mm lens on. I got used to using it as a portrait lens for a while and it's kinda nice.
Thanks, that was lovely, ASMR qualities indeed. I am a bit confused though. At 6:00 "In camera correction" is mentioned, and I had no idea that the Sony cameras had correction data for third party lenses, and for a lens not yet on the market even. Is this correction perhaps made through an "algorithm" that analyses the images taken, and not based on the build of the particular lens? By the way, I very much prefer the uncorrected images. 🙂 And it would be very interesting to se comparisons of the corrections being turned on and off.
Great video. I will be getting this lens for the Sigma fp. I love the way it renders, the "something different" focal length, and build quality. I feel like all of the Canon RF L series lenses should have had this type of quality. Especially considering the outrageous prices Canon charges for them. Keep up the good work... The Lord's blessing be upon you!
having a hard time which of these i want from the series, but pretty sure i am gonna go with this one. do you own any of them or did you just do the reviews?
I LOVE the design and aesthetic of this lens. This is what I want lenses to look like, not the bland plastic overly round lenses of the 80’s-00’s. Bring me the 60’s and 70’s lens aesthetic. Looks like a voigtlander lens! Also I always love seeing Ancient Greek in your longitudinal chromatic aberration tests. I know Greek but unfortunately don’t know Ancient Greek. Would be nice to read the New Testament in its original verbiage.
Top notch lineup. I have 6 different primes. They render like using a Cooke prime for photography. Yeah the build on those Sigmas are superior to my Canon EF L lenses.
Hi Chris if you had a choice of one lens between th Sony 85mm f1.8 or the sigma 65mm f2 for the full frame Sony 7 mark 3. Which would you choose: I’ve just watched both your reviews.
Christopher Frost's voice reminds me of Siri's or Google's male assistant voice. When I have trouble to sleep, CF reviews never fail...better than NyQuil!
Thanks for this excellent review of what appears to be a beautifully built and high performing lens. The IQ looks outstanding. I'm guessing that there are very few (if any) 65 mm prime lenses and certainly none that I know for the Sony E-mount. I'm also impressed with its performance on the Sony 5100 (APSC) camera. Its size fits well with the small form of Sony mirrorless cameras - a 62mm filter size is really nice. Regarding the magnetic lens cap, I'm wondering if it works when the lens is fitted with a filter. Overall, this lens looks like a winner and one that would prove a useful addition to any lens collection. Release date is said to be mid-January 2021 so there is just a little time to save up the pennies, quite a few pennies actually but worth it, I think.
Really curious how it fairs against their 45mm lens? You weren’t to keen on that lens, I wonder what they’ve changed in their design formula between the two. The four new lenses have a great physical/build aesthetic.
I have a question what is the perfect lens for Sony FE mount with sharpness , colour fringing close subject quality with minimum distance etc? or do you have in mind something close
If there is none, there’s one workaround I’m aware of: The company Techart Pro manufactures an adapter in order to use lenses with Sony E mount on Nikon Z.
I've had both. I prefer the Sigma. I think it's just as sharp. And I personally don't need the 1.8, for the f/2 is fine with me. Plus, it's smaller, more modern and just a more fun lens to use.
Just got a canon R6 :( lol well the cost of one RF lens I can buy another camera system might get a Sony camera. Canon needs to put out high quality budget small compact glass and bodies.
@@patrick.771 True the kit lens is a good lens especially the R6 autofocus and image quality all photos of letters and numbers or eyes renders very sharp. Are you a Sony shooter?
@@letsfindout6587 no I switched from an old Nikon to Fuji after comparing cameras for months. Next time I would buy a Z6 :) But I'm sure more affordable lenses will appear for Canon RF and Nikon Z.
Is a great lens but for who ever has a 85mm or a 50mm is not a game changer because is exactly in the middle so a step forward or backward is exactly 65mm. You did a great review as usually 👏, but i wouldn't buy that lens if I have a 50mm or 85mm. I just love your reviews.
I’m seeing your point, and feel the same in terms of focal length. I have a 24, 50, and 90mm. With the APSC super 35 mode right now I can cover 24,35, 50,75,90,135mm. So the 65mm wouldn’t add additional focal length coverage but perhaps it can supplants one of my mainstays. I can’t see it replacing my 90mm, Sigma, f2.8, DG DN, so the question for me is can it replace my 50mm, (Sony, 50mm, f2.8,G). From my research of multiple sites the 65mm’s calling card is it’s otherworldly sharpness across the entire frame at just about any aperture, per the clinical MTF chart tests. I value sharpness, but pragmatically, after a certain level the outperformance in sharpness becomes no longer perceptible. Also, there would be a hole from 35 to 65mm if I jettison my 50mm. So, I am left wondering how I would make use of this brilliantly sharp lens, whereas the lenses I have I am clear how I would use.
Thanks for the interesting review! Seems to me the lens is pretty impressive optically. However the Voigtlander 65mm f2 Macro Apo Lanthar is probably still a bit better. On the other hand it's manual focus only.

Chris back with a new ASMR lens review.
The fact that this is sharper in the corners down toward f/16 than some well-respected lenses are in the center at f/5.6 is mind-blowing.
One day Christopher will let us into the secret of how he gets big lens manufacturers to send him quality products to review all the time. One would guess his friendly demeanour, lovely pictures and honesty.
