bob hope despite the modern day critics was an absolutely amazing man.he literally risked his life on numerous occassions in all the wars the usa were involved in during his long life.my favourite story was of him in england just before the european invasion.hope did something like 18 camps in 2 days never sleeping putting on shows for all the allied troops.finally at about 1 am he stopped after his last show as the heavy rain which delayed the invasion fell.as he was about to leave an officer said its a shame the other camp couldnt make it.what yeh they were supposed to come here but the weather stopped them.though completely exhausted hope stopped the troop leaving commandeered heavy trucks and half tracks and set out to find the missing soldiers.somewhere on the south coast in the middle of the night in the pouring rain bob hope met the g.i s who were trying to walk to where he was! in the middle of a field by truck headlights at 4 am bob hope put on a show for soldiers about to go into battle he was still at it when dawn broke.3000 men were there.some guy just for that one thing never mind everything else he did!

Genius! Bob Hope made it look so effortless, but Vaudeville never left him during his career.

It's not just his jokes; it's his whole demeanor. His face is funny. His voice is funny. He even moves in an amusing way. PS. I, as an Aussie, have the feeling that the Aussie who unexpectedly asked if they had American cigarettes was, as we say, "taking the piss". It's so old school Australian to underplay a close shave.

A Catalina seaplane carrying entertainer Bob Hope was forced to make an emergency landing on Camden Haven adjacent to Laurieton on 14 August 1944. Bob Hope was returning to Sydney after entertaining troops in Guam. The local postmaster lent him money for his hotel bills after the luggage was jettisoned. An impromptu party was held, and the next day Hope and his entourage travelled by road to Newcastle and flew from there to Sydney. Bob Hope maintained contact with the residents of Laurieton for decades afterwards.

Groucho Marx, Jack Benny and Bob Hope had a natural way of being funny without saying a word or without trying to be funny.

even though cavet was a horrid host and always made me uncomfortable to watch his "interviews", this was probably the best bob hope interview that remains, because he was naturally candid and funny, not reading pre-written jokes from cue cards as most of his carson appearances showed.

Bob Hope coming late, taking over the set, no handshakes with host.... what a big shock.... Not really, this was standard everywhere Bob went....

I never knew Buckner's name was pronounced that way, but Bob should know since he met him. Buckner got killed on Okinawa a few years later.

Some camp I have been, Army or Marines, the camp was named after this Buckner guy, West Point, I think. Love these old Cavett clips. Who would ever think at that time we'd be watching reruns like these? Heh, heh : UA-cam and Netflix...

James I listened again...and again. Same normal every day pronunciation of "Buckner" that's been common for a few hundred years at least! Is there another way to say "Buckner"???
I think you should cut back on the brandy!
