SalemMillion The Northstar is not a bad engine at all. It has been a very successful selling engine series for 20 years now. There are a few different variants of the Northstar series including the 3.5L V6, 4.0L V8, 4.4L V8 and the 4.6L V8's. The biggest problem is that the people that experience problems do not properly maintain there cars especiallywith the cooling system. The problem mostly lies with the type of coolant being used. When GM came out with Dexcool antifreeze back in 1997, if not used correctly or changed out when needed, it would cause problems. And it did for many GM vehicles. As far as overheating, that can happen to any engine and typically can be several different things. The cooling systems on these cars are very good and also very simple setup. Its not only the Northstar that can experience these issues, its with all GM vehicles. Parts are very reasonable and are not bad to work on if the mechanic knows what he is doing. Overall they are excellent engines and thats what I drive daily. I also work on my own cars so I know what I'm dealing with and they are not bad at all.

The eldorado is my favorite cadillac, its a shame it was discontinued. Sure it had a v8 and was not fuel efficient, but when you pushed down on the accelerator it didn't let you down. Nowadays we have become much more efficient at making engines, for example a 3.7L mustangv6 rated at 305hp is just as powerful as an older camaro z28 which used a 5.7L v8. As fuel costs go up I suspect the need to make bigger engines will diminish, and v8 will only be exclusive to luxury cars, and trucks.

@halflife103 Unless they are turbocharged. smaller engines used in ricers and european cars are made to accelerate lightweight cars at very very high revolutions, at least most of the ones i think you are talking about. larger more american styled cars are meant push and pull a car at a much lower revolution yet retaining the horsepower for higher revolutions. a 5L generates more ft/lbs of torque per hp than a smaller euopean engine could anyday.
Because the basic shape of the eldo. dates back to 1992 it looks very dated but it is a nice clean design. The steering column does date back to the 1970s in design though. Sadly, they depreciated so badly so fast they got into the hands of people who could not afford to maintain them. Then many became junkers or just died. This one looks great; way better than the Caddys of today trying to be a better German or Japanese car.
Ya know theres no reason in the world to ever SLAM the trunk on a Cadillac.. Thats why they have the pull down feature in the first place. If I ever caught somebody do that to my Eldo or any of my Caddies they'd be gettin a slam....
@halflife103 Seems you are referring to the Ford 5L. It is used in trucks and mustangs. Mustangs are american high performance cars. which means that the buyer is looking for that authentic american muscle car tire roasting low rpm torque feel. the trucks use a 5L because it won't break down as fast as a little V6 will. Plus larger torquey engines are great at pulling trailors. you won't find a small engine that will as well, and also last at pulling like a bigger engine will.
@gmancarini1 Because the V8 in this car isn't meant for horsepower. It's meant to give out a smoother ride and smoother performance than a V6 would. Most of your upper end luxury cars *including the foreign ones as well* use V8s for this reason.
@04smallmj @gajda1984 That is true. American car manufacturers have always been good at making a cheap car. Another good point is the cost of fuel, at the minute in the UK we pay about $9.30 for a gallon (£1.28 a litre) for unleaded.
Accuse me of being all british but I find it amazing how you only get 275 hp from a 4.6 litre V8! Even if you don't care about it being un-economical, it seems silly having such a big engine knowing it could do so much more
@saabkyle04: great review! The Northstar's are expensive to upkeep but are worth every penny! Shame Cadillac doesn't make these amazing coupes anymore.
Love these cars! Kyle could you find a mid 90's Olds 88 or 98? I know you get these requests alot but I'm a big Oldsmobile fan. Love all the big car videos, such as this one, that you do.
One important detail I kinda think you should be pushing on older luxury cars is whether or not you HAVE to use premium gas as opposed to regular... I wouldn't care less, but at least where I'm from, premium is currently around 50 CENTS A GALLON MORE than regular. Heard some Caddys & other Top end GM products from the same era (possibly with the same Northstar engine) accept regular with no issues & I heard some REQUIRE 93 octane. Can someone clarify for me?
From my experience, my car was happiest with 91 octane at a minimum, but she had issues. My understanding is that these cars, when in good condition, can handle 87 without issue because the computer will adjust the timing; for some reason, however, Cadillac neglected to remove the 'Premium Fuel Only' notice on the fuel gauge.
I'm a bit late to the party but I own this car and have used 87 for the last three years with 0 issues. I do all of my maintenance and have never found any result of damage due to using less than 91! I do notice a little bit of horsepower decrease but for just driving it around town, I don't really mind. probably an additional 15-20 hp using premium.
@@Breadts1cks I have one of these, 02 ETC you won't get more horsepower with premium. Money down the drain. It's designed to run optimally on regular. Ask GM. That's for 00+ Northstar.
@saabkyle04 on my 06 Grand Prix, it has a automatic transmission and right after P,N,D, and R positions it has 3, 2, 1. I assume that means it has 3 gears, but Edmunds says all 06 Grand Prix's have a 4 gear transmission enleast for the autos. I saw something similar with this Caddy. Do you know anything about it?
Unfortunately, I have indeed suffered the dreaded head gasket failure. Luckily for me, I'd also done research and I recognized the signs early enough so that I didn't blow the engine. You're right, 1992 was the only year with the 4.9 engine. Thus far, I've failed to hear anything bad about them. It's a bit underpowered for me (then, my old Caddy had the 4.1 under the hood) but nothing else. As far as N* engines go, the years you really need to look out for are 1997-2002. Mine's a 1998.
@gajda1984 You should realise that there are engines in between V8s and 1L diesels. I totally see that this is the sort of car that obviously needs more power than the 70ish hp you'd get from one of those. However, my original point is that if you are going to have the thirstiness of a V8 (I believe I saw 17MPG as he started it up) you may as well get the power benefits.
@dfoggin I've seen some of your V6 engines get the same MPG. Infact, some V6 engines in trucks get worse MPG than V8s due to the weight. How is it you Britts can put a V12 in a Martin that only gets 400 to 500 horse, yet we can put a V8 in a car that gets over 600?
I love this car but I always have the window on the side between the B and C pillar looked stupid. I feel like it should have angle down with the roofline
@PantstofryPWNZ I believe so! At least most are, it just depends on which one u get. Depending on the milage, age, and condition I wouldn't pay more than than maybe....... 5 to 10 thousand max

Accuse me of being all british but I find it amazing how you only get 275 hp from a 4.6 litre V8! Even if you don't care about it being un-economical, it seems silly having such a big engine knowing it could do so much more
These cars are really great. You are very good at choosing the cars to upload. Have you found a Cressida? You may not, but just asking.
Love all the big car videos, such as this one, that you do.
my dad owned one of these when i was growing up
Beautiful Car!
I'm 19 saving for my first REAL car (: I drive a 91 s10 right now but on my way to this beauty !
Ever get one?
Last year of this beauty. I'd love a dark blue one with blue leather, if it existed. Disapointed to see this had 25 less horsepower than the non-ESC.
VinylToVideo has lower gear ratios for higher torque. Higher horsepower is only for top speed
Lance Dukel Interesting, must be different for the ETC. I have the ESC and definitely feel a difference.
YES! MEMORIES!
When i get an eldog i will maintain it well. I rarely see any clean ones in chicago. One day ill get one. One day.
Paulie Gualtieri´s car! lol I love it!
I love the 2002 Cadilliac Elsie's if only I can find one in Massachusetts
Are the lines on the carpeting from being cleaned with a vacume?
that gauge cluster is the same one they used in the 90s Deville.
Great song and car !! Rip eddie money
Hi Kyle, have you ever exported any of your cars to Switzerland? I'm looking for a Eldorado
Its a pretty sweet ride
love the caddilac. sts v8 love em
Nice tie!
Northstar was heavily redesigned in 2000. Your 98 is alot different than this mechanically. 98 and 99 statistically have the most pulled head bolts.
Can ya do a Quick Look on the Seville STS in the background?
Do you think you could give 0-60 times when showing horsepower and torque? Thanks! Keep up the good work!
I have this car i just got it it has 60 k miles will a muffler delete hurt the engine ?? Lmk asap please
Beautiful Caddi
I Love This Car !!
thanks for the reviews, good job.
the 1992-2002 Cadillac Eldorado was assembled in
Hamtramck, Michigan, United States
Lansing, Michigan, United States
I have the 2001 Eldorado Cadillac, red. It looks exactly like the 2002 he showed on the video
hot. absolutely love these caddies, i prefer the non northstar engines, but still very nice.
Eddie Money is always like!) Stylish car!
I miss my 92.
I love this car but I always have the window on the side between the B and C pillar looked stupid. I feel like it should have angle down with the roofline
Are there any editing mistakes in this video, or is this your new "concept" of editing videos?
@PantstofryPWNZ I believe so! At least most are, it just depends on which one u get. Depending on the milage, age, and condition I wouldn't pay more than than maybe....... 5 to 10 thousand max
I didnt know that there is so big U.S.car with FWD,...I like RWD,but still nice car
+Amargeddon 1982 The Eldorado was FWD since its introduction back in 1967 one year after the Oldsmobile Toronado in 1966. If anybody wants a big V8 luxury personal coupe than there is the Eldorado's rival, the Lincoln Mark series that are all RWD cars.
Well older eldorados were rwd but they were more like deville trim
@@V8_screw_electric_cars no. Eldorado was always top of the line. Always more expensive and exclusive than Deville.
@@lancedukel3436 I know but they were based on deville until 1967 when it became fwd based on toronado
Midtown Madness!!!!!!!!!!
I love those Northstars :D
Dumbest engines
my favorite kind of caddy!
THIS Car is Ok, BUT Nothing Compares to The One I had Same Color Except Mines was an 1985 Eldog With The Stainless Steel Top AND The Digital Dash.. IF I Ever Find Another Like it In Good Condition I Will Buy it ASAP
Glad you like it. Personally, I cannot stand digital gauges. Give me analog!
Masterpiece
I own this car it's tan and I love it. The only caddy I like. Would love to own a 69 one as well
