My WD my book gave out! I watched this video and bought a sled! Plugged it in and I am in shock! I can now access the drive and I got my only copy of some critical records back! THANKS! You saved me! Now I am going to buy 2 identical SSD to have as a main drive and a back up! I learned my lesson!
@@zaz4667 SDDs have a life of 3 to 5 years, they are fast but not good for long term storage. They deteriorate even if you don't use them. Buy two external HDD from different brands, don't buy cheap ones, get good quality stuff.

Thank you for your tutorial because it really helped me! I have an old 160GB My Book that had the same issue where it wouldn't start up but kept chirping. Mine was a different type than in your video because it was a little difficult to open, and the hard drive had that long line of pins at the end (Not sure what they're called). However, I bought a SATA Converter on Amazon that takes 3 different hard drive types and luckily my old hard drive turned on and I was able to save my old media onto a newer and bigger external hard drive.😁

I have the same dead hard drive but I have a feeling it is the actual disk drive that is damaged, When I plug the usb into the computer and power it on, it is recognized by the computer and i can see the device on my device list but I cannot open it. I replaced the mother board but that made no difference. Any advice or video on how to repair a damaged disk?
Everyone's situation is different. I had seagates fail on me much more often than WD.. however I have a 2tb ad and a 2tb Seagate both working great for a decade now. (When 2tb first came out)

I sure hope this can work with a 8TB Seagate model external drive, will try to do that soon when possible since it was silly enough that I had it less than three months then suddenly it starts acting up now; power light is on, but it makes a buzzing sound then a few clicks and stops with "USB has malfunctioned, Windows doesn't recognize it!" ugh what a pain and the thing is too new to be considered terrible since I didn't really use it much when I had to replace a PC.
I have the same drive. Just all of a sudden will not power up. Took the hdd out and connected my sabrent converters and it still can't get power. PC will not recognize it either. Could that be an issue with the pcb on the hdd itself? Got about 700g on a 1tb drive. Lot's of info on it I really would Ike to get off. Any idea?

What should I do about my WD My Passport, which just today stopped showing up on my Mac after I restarted my computer? (It's a 3TB, 2018 I think...) It won't even show up in disk utility. I then rebooted it a few times. No joy. I then moved it to my MacBook Pro and it won't show up there either. I did finally notice that the LED light is not really lighting up, although it hums, and I feel power going through it, but it won't mount. I'd been using it as my main external hard drive, and have it mostly backed up, but not entirely. Please help! I have some major projects on there! What should I do next?

Bought a data recovery unit just like that to "rescue" a drive just like that from my old pc...your vid is the closest I've seen to answering my question, "WTH is wrong?" However, the unit arrived and it lit up (w/no noise) and still have not gotten the drive to reveal anything. I don't know if the unit arrived defective or the drive is totally dead - Note: I removed it from a pc that would no longer power up, if this helps. HP also, if the brand helps ('cause they usually suck!) Help!
When I connect my WD it doesn't make a clicking noisem I do hear the windows detecting a device sound (which you said is a good sign) issue is I checked disk management and it find the drive at 0.00mb asks if I'd like to initialize ot and use a gmt partition. I say yes but it says it can't because it doesn't meet the minimum size at 0 00mb. When I plugged it in this morning and it was playing a home movie it paused resumed and then paused and wouldn't continue again. It froze up my windows I restarted a few times it took a while before windows can even get back to a desktop after the loading screen but it finally did. When I tried plugging in the drive again it wouldn't find it at all.
In my personal expiriens I sometimes head cliking drives and iff the clicks aren't non stop and It spins some times you can just run it for like a hour and then put it in to storage for half a year and it will magicly start worcking again

A Hammer fell on my hard drive (it was inside a case though), now when I plug it into my PC, I hear the windows-recognize-sound, the light goes on, but then it sounds like the hard drive is starting, fails, starting again, fails again and so on, never showing up on my pc thus being recognized, not showing up in the partition manager. Is that the same issue as you described in the video or what could it be? Can it be fixed (easily)?
Actually you can repair that unit by replacing one capacitor and check the power brick transformer, usually one of those are the fault and it can be fixed very easy.

My WD Easystore 8tb won't come on at all. I changed out the plug to DC 12V because that's what it uses. It worked so I unplugged it. What if it's not making any sound but there is a slight bluish light? The desktop used to chime and give an error message every 30 seconds or so, which got annoying, but I couldn't access the files. So I unplugged it from the computer. I left it plugged into the power source, though, because I wanted to try it on another computer, in case it was a problem with my computer. I just now plugged it into my laptop, and nothing happens. Not even the annoying chime and error message.
I removed a 4.0 TB WD Green from it's My Book enclosure. I attached a SATA to USB cable after removing the board. The drive will not spin. NOTE: The drive does spin with the board attached but not when I attach the SATA Cable. What gives? Is the sled different than the SATA cable?
I have this same drive. My will light up and I can hear the fan or motor (not sure which) but it's not loud. The info does not show on my computer. If I purchase a WD USB Converter and do exactly what you have done, do you think I can recover the data myself OR do you think the drive is dead?
The method I show is a very rare and lucky occurrence. This method works best if the drive is completely dead. Also, since this goes behind another pcb, it is worth a shot to order a converter. If it gives you any other issues or you still can't see it, then there is a real issue with the drive

So I did exactly what you did and my drive is a 1tb hard drive, when i connect the drive I hear the windows sound, but it doesnt show up on my drives. when i go to disk managment though it shows it as an unallocated drive with 239.9 GB. I bought a new WD My Book 6TB external drive two months ago and it has failed. The noise it makes is both a dull 'groan' and then a 'squeak'. The converter is getting power (light is on and makes the windows sound when I plug into laptop) but the light goes out when I plug in my drive, the computer makes another sound (like I disconnected the adaptor) and nothing happens. Agreed. I hate WD. Two of mine stopped working. So far no issues with Seagate. But the best solution is a docking station.

How do I know which sata box/adapter sled to buy I have a WD 1.0 TB 32mb cache
My WD Easystore 8tb won't come on at all. I changed out the plug to DC 12V because that's what it uses. It worked so I unplugged it. I tried to use it today but it won't come on so I know it's not the plug, I think it is the powerboard. Do you have a video to fix a HDD that big or should I go to computer store to fix it? Thank you
Hello ,, i have external hard drive WD 4 Tb 3.5 inc and the board of sata - usb are damaged i replaced it by an other one but i found problem that in my computer not showing all the storage just 1.6 Tb and thr other 2tb not showing even in disk management is there is a solution about this and thank you ..
Are there different sizes for that sled/caddy? If so, which is ideal for that hard drive?
It's best to get one that fits "3.5" drives as the will also fit 2.5"

What if it's not making any sound but there is a slight bluish light? The desktop used to chime and give an error message every 30 seconds or so, which got annoying, but I couldn't access the files. So I unplugged it from the computer. I left it plugged into the power source, though, because I wanted to try it on another computer, in case it was a problem with my computer. I just now plugged it into my laptop, and nothing happens. Not even the annoying chime and error message.
I removed a 4.0 TB WD Green from it's My Book enclosure. I attached a SATA to USB cable after removing the board. The drive will not spin. NOTE: The drive does spin with the board attached but not when I attach the SATA Cable. What gives? Is the sled different than the SATA cable?
I have this same drive. My will light up and I can hear the fan or motor (not sure which) but it's not loud. The info does not show on my computer. If I purchase a WD USB Converter and do exactly what you have done, do you think I can recover the data myself OR do you think the drive is dead?
The method I show is a very rare and lucky occurrence. This method works best if the drive is completely dead. Also, since this goes behind another pcb, it is worth a shot to order a converter. If it gives you any other issues or you still can't see it, then there is a real issue with the drive

My wife has 2010 macbook pro that only has 2.0 usb ports. Is there a way to conect or convert a port to 3.0 to use the sabrent sata 3.0 external hard drive lay flatdocking station?
So I did exactly what you did and my drive is a 1tb hard drive, when i connect the drive I hear the windows sound, but it doesnt show up on my drives. when i go to disk managment though it shows it as an unallocated drive with 239.9 GB. Is there a reason why the space is lower, and how can i fix it so it shows up in my drives

Got the sled looked like it was going to work no problem the light went on and started flashing but no start up beep sounds like the unit is working and the disc is turning but didn't show in my computer. Help please
That sled you used..............it had power? or the power is coming thru the usb connection?
It has a separate power connection for power and a data connection via usb
I have one of these and wondering if I can replace the current 1TB drive with a 6TB drive? Or will the electrics, etc. not be adequate?

I bought a new WD My Book 6TB external drive two months ago and it has failed. The noise it makes is both a dull 'groan' and then a 'squeak'. It no longer shows up in Windows 10; so I am not able to direct any recovery software to a particular drive. If anyone can make a suggestion on how to work around this, I'd appreciate the advice. I have a mybook that reads but very very slow, can I just do this but instead of sata sled, connect to a open sata port on my pc? does it need the sled?
If it's slow, means there is a problem most likely with the head. Sata speeds would be much faster. But yes, you can check the file format first

Question. I did everything on the tutorial however the HD doesn't show up. Opened in Disk Management and it sees the disk, but when I right click to "Change letter and path..." everything is grayed out. What should I do?

My WD hard drive was make NO noise at all. I followed this video and used a SATA converter. The converter is getting power (light is on and makes the windows sound when I plug into laptop) but the light goes out when I plug in my drive, the computer makes another sound (like I disconnected the adaptor) and nothing happens. HELP!
isnt the piece small board encrypt the data so you cant just connect to pc
